For those who want to learn more about The Good Dinosaur and the two other future (untitled) Pixar films which were briefly mentioned at the end of the main segment, here's a good overview/place to start.

Welcome to the madness of MechaTalk!

This was a real fun episode to listen to as the Pixar movies have been the only Disney movies I've really cared about. My absolute favorite would probably still be the first Toy Story.

What, so crapping on something automatically makes me a fanboy? I don't think Antz is as good as A Bug's Life. What's the issue here?

Re: Ep. 027: The Films of Pixar

Nice round up on the Pixar films.

Before commenting I wanted to say something about one of the earlier comments made about why japanese manga companies won't embrace digital media format.

While reading physical paper manga volumes is a cultural institution and probably won't go away for a long time (with all the manga cafes and people still reading them at home), at least in Tokyo, the common sights of people reading manga in trains and public places like cafes seems to be entirely supplanted with ppl staring at/internet browsing on their mobile phone devices/smartphones, basically like any scene in a big american city. I hardly saw a soul who was sitting around reading a physical paper manga on the trains, subways or anywhere in the open. With that market I don't see why manga companies don't start adopting digital format versions of their titles for the home market. At least in Tokyo, it seems to be a good one.

Now onto the Pixar films:

I agree that Wall-E, Toy Story 3, and Finding Nemo are among my top 3 favorite Pixar films so far and for much the same reasons you guys described.

Cars - technically I know the storytelling in this film falls below the standards of their other works but I loved this film, mainly because I'm a huge car geek like Lasseter, and for petrolheads, the type who would be into shows like Top Gear, this was fun for us in a lot of ways it wouldn't be for non car ppl, who have to focus on story on characters.

Cars 2 - yeah, the car porn is ramped up even higher here, but the story felt a bit soulless and like a cash grab. I watched this at home on blu ray and honestly I had a hard time paying attn. The story material really did feel like 'direct-to-video' level storytelling here with a animation budget of a feature film.

Up - I'm probably the only person who didn't warm up to this movie like everyone else, yes the first 10 min are brilliant and heartbreaking, but then after that, honestly, the cranky old man and fat boy scout weren't characters I enjoyed that much, and the story didn't really draw me in as it did others.

Shorts - Presto, aka Portal the animation, is still one of my favorites for its sheer absurdity and close attention to portal physics for comedic effect.

Very nice episode. Kristina was delightful again. I think she should be a regular host.

I would really, really, really like to see the Día de los Muertos film come to completion.

If you liked the first 10 minutes of Up, you should see the animated short called Furiko, which means Pendulum. And if you don't cry or at the very least get teary eyed, I would be seriously worried about you. Check it out.

Re: Ep. 027: The Films of Pixar

No, I said 'fanboy style', like, "We're not going to talk about why we think one thing is better than the other - it's just that one was made by that low-rent version of Pixar, so it's obviously inferior." You were sort-of doing it in a joking manner, but on my end it was like, 'Wait, Antz isn't bad at all, why are they completely dismissing it?' It's just surprising, considering the lengths you guys go to to shut down similar snap judgments people make about other games/shows/etc.

Re: Ep. 027: The Films of Pixar

Again, what you're saying makes no sense. If I watch two things and say that I don't like one as much as the other, how is that a snap judgment? It's not like I was pre-bitching about Antz before it came out.

Re: Ep. 027: The Films of Pixar

@hotlimit - The only reason Antz came up in the first place is because it came out around the same time as Bug's Life, which in my case caused confusion. Chris went on to explain how and why this happened, but we didn't sit and discuss it further because in the end, Antz isn't a Pixar film and this podcast ran long enough without going into that, too.

That being said, I enjoyed Antz when it came out, but as I said on the show, I don't recall much of anything about that movie.

@bertman4: d'aw. ^^

Re: Ep. 027: The Films of Pixar

Ok been a little bit, time to put my reply up.
The Pixar movies, I haven't seen everyone, I did really like the Toy Story movies, I haven't seen 3 though.
Monsters Inc I found fun, but the idea I think was partly inspired or borrowed by Argh Real Monsters(monsters going in to kid's rooms to scare them and earn points for it ect)
Cars and Cars 2 not bothered with.
Wall-E similarly but I want to watch it.

Finding Nemo is one of the best ones, also the fish are just coral fish(Nemo and his dad)
I actually also liked the Seagulls as well.
The Dentist office looked like it was in Sydney somewhat itself.

Finally Bugs Life I did like, although I will say I kind of also enjoyed Antz.

Welcome to mechatalk also Kristina!
On a side note and hearing your voice again you and Yami/Kira Yamato 44 sound really similar.
Maybe it's just me though lol.

Also I'm alright skipped the mailbag this time.

Re: Ep. 027: The Films of Pixar

OK, sorry for coming off like a troll guys. I could go back and pick out line by line what bothered me (it totally came off like a dude saying 'I liked Hunger Games back when it was called Battle Royale'), but I don't expect everyone to be on their guard about every little joke they make (the podcast wouldn't be any fun that way!).

Anyway, my favorite Pixar film has to be Monster's Inc., even when I totally wasn't in the mood for it, it completely sucked me in. Those movies are seriously clever, so I get why a lot of people feel Cars is cliche (though my favorite short is definitely the Tokyo Drift parody).

I also loved that Brad Bird voiced Edna Mode in The Incredibles.

Re: Ep. 027: The Films of Pixar

I actually enjoyed Cars a bit more than Chris, which had to do with a heavy tone involving NASCAR, which was actually very ironic that this movie wasn't produced before the unfortunate death of Dale Earnhardt, otherwise Michael Keaton (the first live-action Batman from Tim Burton era) would have never been casted because of his character literally based upon Earnhardt. On the bright side, at least they got Richard Petty and his wife, as well as Darrell Waltrip, who has been doing NASCAR broadcasting for FOX Sports. There's also Bob Costas, who got rehabilitated after his last appearance on the movie called "Baseketball", which was an utter embarrassment for his statue in entertainment/sports media. The first Cars movie was literally NASCAR meets Doc Hollywood, the sequel turns into Formula One meets James Bonds/Dirty Rotten Scoundrel, which wasn't exactly the best idea.

As for Ratatouille, not until I did a search on Wikipedia (which can be a useful tool if not for some trolls start ruining some of the facts) that the story was inspired from the death of Bernard Loiseau, who committed suicide after one of his review cost his Michelin star, which BTW has been an issue with some restaurant owners as the standards for the Michelin Guide varies in range. The motto "Anybody can cook" reminds me of Martin Yen's quote "Yan can cook, and so can you", and the fact that it's the rat who wants to be a cook instead of the kid really jumped on me, besides I used to work in a restaurant for half a year, watching "Iron Chef/Iron Chef America, Kitchen Nightmares for a long time and have been dining at quite a few restaurants, so this movie really definitely draws me in.

Keep up with the good work, and just one question for the hosts, will there be an episode for "The Avengers"? Just a thought.
Please don't make me quoting certain wrestlers' catchphrases (What?!) or you don't want to find out how nasty it gets (What?!). Tell me you didn't just say that (What?!)

No plan for The Avengers on the show. If we were going to do it, we'd also want to discuss the other Marvel movies, but that's already been mostly covered with Iron Man 1-2 on Gundamn and Captain America/Thor on Shinjuku at the Movies, so we'd have no reason to do those things again.

Which seems a darn shame your giving Dark Knight Rise a spot with the other Nolan Batman movies.
Considering your a big fan of Marvel's cinematic universe I was assuming going to review it or talk about it somewhere, somehow Chris.

Because hey it seems like a few others feel similarly.
The only one which hasn't been covered anyway is the Hulk Reboot movie.

Oh, and I was totally blown away when Chris gave the recommendation for Baratunde Thurston! I didn't even know he was a comedy writer, I've mostly seen his videos and writing on race relations in the US. I will be getting his book for sure.
