Do you guys think we will see more sequels of old mecha series?

2021 looks like it could be a good year for sequels of mecha series. Right of the bat we have already got Getter Robo Arc and the sequel for Code Geass. Then there is the still ongoing (about to be wrapped up) Evangelion 4.0 and Fafner Beyond. Do you think that we'll get even more sequels for mecha shows in 2021, and if so, which series do you want to have a sequel the most?

Agree. But I've got a feeling that studios will try to bank more on nostalgia and familiarity in the foreseeable future. Things already looks uncertain enough before the pandemic. And is it just me or does it seem like more and more yearly hits are adaptations of already existing properties? I mean, it just that the percentage seems to have rise.

Eh... I'm not sure it'll even be that. Most of what's set to come out is pretty uninspired stuff.

Movie-wise, we're getting another installment of the godawful franchise zombie Neon Genesis Evangelion, the unasked-for second Macross Delta movie, and Hathaway's flash. No original properties.

On TV, we're getting an adaptation of an Angelic Layer-esque gacha game called LBX Girls, a Gridman spinoff SSSS.DYNAZENON, Getter Robo Arc, and Muv-Luv Alternative.

AFAIK, Code Geass: Z of the Recapture has no release date at present. Didn't Fafner THE BEYOND already come out last year?

All in all, kind of a snore except for Getter Robo and Hathaway's Flash. The only original property on the list is SSSS.DYNAZENON, a super robot anime.

And not exactly new either. Unless they change anything, Dynazenon is most likely to be combination of Dyna Dragon and God Zenon from original Gridman. Dyna Dragon was completely absent fron SSSS.Gridman, while God Zenon's has counterpart vehicles that never combined by themselves.

Things might be more interesting for Toku fan, however. Although it's ended, the inclusion of support mecha in Ultraman Z is very well-received, and the next Super Sentai, Zenkaiger, appears to be another mech-centered series.

Yeah, I'm not exactly asked for "good" sequels, just asking for more sequels. And it isn't like mecha fans have a lot of things to look forward to these days.

I think I did read some interviews talking about Sunrise having another big announcement for Code Geass early next year, so I just presume that they would air the TV show during Fall or something. And Fafner Beyond is a series of 12 OVA. Only 9 have came out (they aired 3 episodes each time)/

Haven't watched Ultraman Z yet, but are the mecha stuffs in it like Ultraseven?

Is there any word on when/if Fafner Beyond will reach North America?

Their role are similar to fighters from older show, but it turned out that mech's development is actually the center of its plot. If you don't mind spoiler, they just uploaded compilation that summary it.

That we aren't seeing tons of mecha anime is all the more reason to not settle for garbage.

Nope... the big announcement was a mobile game called Code Geass: Genesic Re;CODE and a re-release of the movie Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection.

Code Geass: Z of the Recapture hasn't been scheduled yet. As far as we know, they only recently began writing the series. If it airs in 2021, it'll be a winter 2021 release. More likely, it'll come out in 2022.

Speaking of sequels/remakes, what's this board's opinion on either Gaiking: LODM or Koutetsushin Jeeg?

The Gaiking remake is pretty great. Original Gaiking is borderline unwatchable.

Koutetsushin Jeeg is nice and short. Doesn't overstay its welcome and the original cast works nicely with the new cast. The only problem is that it's not a real sequel to the 1975 show/manga because it makes alot of over the top retcons to the previous events.

Re: Do you guys think we will see more sequels of old mecha series?

i in the SRW FB group that there's a show that's kinda related to the machine robo series. the uniforms and chara designs resembles the early 2000s Machine Robo Rescue. there's also that new Mospeada thing. no other news on that aside that it exist.

speaking of Machine Robo rescue. anyone here watched that? i only saw bits and pieces when it was aired in the local channels with a dub so dont have much of an opinion about it.

G-Gundam second season when?

Sunrise is missing the opportunity to shoehorn Devil Gundam Junior from the SD G-Generation games to animated proper. They can retool the Eldora Army into the Devil Gundam Junior's army.

Code Geass: Z of the Recapture was to be made by a new crew with Goro Tanaguchi and Ichiro Okouchi coming up with the concept, thought I believe there just waiting for them to finish there current projects before they return to code geass.

Still waiting for code geass sequel, Sunrise seems to only care about making more UC and NEW AUs rather than focusing on CE or Geass OR making them into franchises like Mai Hime Franchise

Why focus on CE? Destiny did a pretty thorough job wrapping up everything.

New AU's have the advantage of well, being new and fresh. If they want to mine the memberberries they have UC for that.

TBH, Code Geass is a series that didn't need a sequel. It had a solid ending that didn't need or want a further continuation of the story. Akito the Exiled was largely unnecessary as an addition to the story and the Lelouch of the Re;surrection film just ruins the existing ending. They should have left it alone.

Sunrise prioritizes Gundam in general, and the UC in particular, because that's the studio's #1 cash cow by a substantial margin. It's their reliable steady earner that pays the bills. The Universal Century is the nostalgia porn that keeps the longtime fans coming back and opening their wallets for the merchandise. For their part, the new AUs are brand ambassadors meant to appeal to casual and first-time viewers who would otherwise be intimidated or put off by the huge amount of continuity porn and required reading/viewing behind a new UC title. CE doesn't get the same attention because it's a modernized take on the UC that's far less iconic than what it was aping.
