Sidestories of the Universal Century

Post by Deacon Blues » Sun Oct 25, 2009 3:24 pm

Over in the timeline thread, we sorta derailed about creating a timeline of a lot of the sidestory material that is floating around for the Universal Century. Well, I started on that project already and thought I'd introduce some of the material that I've summarized thus far. Please keep in mind that a lot of these stories are from decades ago and their dates and or events may not jive well with what we currently know. Gundam is, after all, constantly evolving.

STAMPEDE: THE STORY OF PROFESSOR MINOVSKY

Type: manga

Serialized: Gundam Generation 1
Publisher: Bandai (Pure Cyber Comics)
Price: 880 yen
Released: 1990.03.30

Summary: Trenov Y. Minovsky was born in 1986 (UC0015) near Chernobyl. After moving to America in 1999 (UC0031) he enrolled in school and began research on a fictitious particle known as "Minovsky Physics". But at the time his research was far too unrealistic, and no one understood where he was going with it. However, one of his buddies, Ionesco, informs him that Anaheim Electronic has agreed to sponsor his research. He is thrilled at this, much to the chagrin of Ionesco. Shortly thereafter in UC0040, the Minovsky particle is discovered. However, at a scientific conference, it is determined that the Minovsky particle has no relation to nuclear fusion reactors and that his thesis has no conclusive evidence. The reason behind it comes from Ionesco saying that it only has conventional technological applications. Ionesco also refutes Minovsky's research by stating that a particle with a special nature like it was never detected. As of this, he was deemed an impostor and forever banned from the scientific community. A short time later, he is approached by the Zabi family and later moves to Side 3 in UC 0045. At the same time, the "Minovsky Physics Society" is established and weapons development is started. However, as he becomes increasingly obsessed with weapons development, which leads to his wife leaving him. Following the death of Zeon Zum Daikun in UC 0070, Minovsky receives an award for his developments, but tosses it aside in front of the entire Zabi family. From here he flees back to Earth to Chernobyl.

Wow. they were being VERY optimistic about the timeline here, 1986 being year 15 of the Universal Century....
Gundam is not about heroes looking badass by saving love interests. Gundam is about heroes bawling and spouting philosophies after failing to save love interests.
Basically true.

Deacon, this is certainly much better and more detailed than the mere list I made in the other thread. Very nice! :D

I think the writer was going with the notion that the Universal Century (or "space age," if you will) began with the moon landing in 1969. I'd start with Sputnik, personally, but there you go.

As for the Stampede story, it originally appeared in issue 1 of Bandai's Cyber Comix anthology; Gundam Generation 1 is a reprint, a collection of Gundam-themed material from Cyber Comix. According to the story, Minovsky was born in 1983 in the Ural region, so he would have been three years old at the time of the Chernobyl disaster. From a timeline standpoint, the first scene takes place in 1986, with little Minovsky watching the plume of smoke from Chernobyl; it ends during the One Year War, with Minovsky about to be killed by Zeon mobile suits. (Thus establishing a theme continued in Gundam The Origin, of Minovsky being killed by his own creations.)

Actually, the title page of the story says "Episode 1: U.C. 0015~0080", so in this version perhaps Minovsky is killed by Zeon remnants after the end of the war. The story itself doesn't really explain it, though.

To think Minovsky had such a troubled, controversial career

Who knew?

It's food for thought, though. For such a pivotal background character, there's not much information on him outside of that side story. For our purposes, all we need to know is "smart guy; discovered the particles that make mobile suits a reality," but I always wondered why he never bothered showing up more often.

Let it never be said that Zeon isn't vindictive.

Just wanna ask something here. The manga "Outer Gundam" has no connection to the Outer Gundam Mobile Suit, right? From what I gather, the latter was some sort of prank by a magazine (?), but I just wanna make sure.
ohhhh snap

Yes there's no connection at all.

The manga "Outer Gundam" is essentially a One Year War side story, whereas the MSF-000 O Gundam and allied designs (e.g MSU-010, NNT-001, MOX-012) come from "O-Gundam", which was claimed to be a ZZ sequel (but actually was merely sort of joke!) published by Out Magazine.
