GM Quel.

So what is the reason for the underuse of the GM Quel? Was it actually mass produced to start with? Was it too expensive(though that hardly seemed to stop the Titans before)? Or was it surpassed by later units?

It was mass-produced, but because it was one of the Titans first new mobile suit designs it was quickly outpaced by 2nd Generation MS designs that were entering service during the Gryps conflict.

I don't know, TR-1's reserve unit using a GM Quel frame seems to be exceptionally resistant to being outpaced. But hey, its AOZ, all frames are over engineered and you can add any number and weight to it and it will never break by its own strain. I will not be surprised if they have a toothpick that can support and balance two 60,000t battleships on both sides and the middle is held by two fingers of a MS.
