Capt. Wald exhaled, letting out a breath that he felt like he had been holding for the last few hours aboard the Gwanban. M'Quve had taken him along to a meeting with Haman-sama and a few other important captains ostensibly because Capt. Bacon was a buffoon, and there were several moments during the meeting when Haman had briefly made eye contact with him where he felt as if he were going to faint. He very nearly did when, as the officers present were leaving afterwards, one of her guards approached him and told him she wanted to speak with him in private. He had managed to croak a 'yes' (his voice may or may not have broken) and was whisked away to the next room where he was half-shoved inside, alone, with Haman-sama.

The next few minutes were a blur in his mind, mostly because he had spent the majority of them staring at the floor or Haman's mouth as she spoke, but he found himself clutching a single pink rose as the guards came back in to escort him back out to the waiting M'Quve. She had touched his hand! Now he was left wondering if he had made a fool of himself, and more importantly trying to recall what all she had told him. "I need you to do your best for me," she had said - he remembered that part. She was amazing in person, truly a confident and powerful leader, and beautiful--

"Sir," Vada said, pulling him back to the present, "The new Gaza units and parts have been secured in the hangar,". "What?" Pizal said, blinking absentmindedly for a moment, "Oh, yes. Excellent. We need well-maintained mobile suits to carry out our mission,". Gina turned in her seat and added, "The new pilots have arrived as well, captain. Lt. Ball should be meeting them in the hangar,". Wald frowned slightly at that, "Wonderful. Their introduction to the ship is the delightful Lt. Ball. Maybe I should--". "IS THAT WHAT I THINK IT IS?!" Gina practically squealed, her eyes going wide at the sight of the rose attached to Pizal's jacket. "It is," he answered, trying to look and sound incredibly important, head held high and chin jutted forward. "Oh my god! Can I touch it?" she asked, leaving her post to float closer to him.

Instinctively shielding it with a cupped hand, he said, "Please, return to your station. If you'd like to see the rose I'd be glad to show you later,". That got a snicker out of Vada, who quickly shut up and turned around. Wald frowned and rested his hands on his belt. "We're to remain here with the Trammel unit for now. When the attack begins we'll be in direct action with the Titans and AEUG to regain control of her highness' colony laser."

Re: Episode 27 - The Beginning [Axis]

Although there were new suits coming in, Djorn had long ago learned not to let anything go to waste, a lesson he shared with the hangar crew. So even as the shiny new machines were being delivered, he was helping to gut the old ones. Broken, beaten and scarred, each one still had parts that functioned. He, for one, was not going to let those parts slip out of his grasp.

He reached out, grabbing onto one of the machines with his left hand to steady himself so that he could use the wrench in his right. Unfortunately, as soon as his hand made contact with the metal panel, a jolt of electricity shot through him.

A yelp, a curse and a flinging of his injured hand sent him floating away from the machine. He examined his injured hand and decided the burns were not bad enough to warrant a visit to the infirmary.

"Must be a short, somewhere," he muttered as he steadied himself and drifted back to the Gaza.
Yep...That's Texas in a nutshell. Why just say "f**k you" when you can put it on a flag?

Ltjg. Renard Baromsky pulled himself into the suit deck. The lean, wiry man had his duffel slung over the left shoulder and an unlit cigarette hanging out the corner of his mouth as he surveyed Zeon personnel working over the newly arrived Gaza-C units.

“Back again, Bindra,” he muttered, “This time I’ll stick around.”

He was supposed to report to a lieutenant by the name of Ball. Figuring this Ball guy could find him instead, Renard pushed ahead to where he knew the pilot ready room would be located.

As the door slid open to enter the hangar Nikolai had to quickly snap to attention as a Ltjg. slipped past him carrying a duffel bag. 'Must be the new pilot,' he thought as the man continued past, not even noticing him.

He'd been kicking himself since the battle at Gryps 2. Graden had died defending the ship alone, alone because he had rushed to launch and when a mechanical failure went off he had to get off the catapult so that Djorn could launch. This delay could have very well been what caused Graden's death. Had he had a wingman he might not have been so dogged in his lone pursuit of the AEUG mobile suits. But the fight must go on and Nikolai would do everything he could to help.

Surveying the hangar he saw Djorn floating back towards a Gaza-C that was being dismantled. "Hey, Nachtjaeger!" the young pilot called as he pushed off a railing towards Djorn, "What can I do to lend a hand?"
"Kamille, if it wasn't for you...." Jerid's last words

- The Bindra -
- Hangar -

Max Ball floated at the top level of catwalks above the work going on in the cavernous - and now more comfortably crowded thanks to new Gazas being unloaded - hangar, the toe of one boot locked behind a railing to keep him in place. He hadn't fought the transfer from M'Quve's Trammel to the Bindra despite his mutual... dislike of Capt. Wald. He had nothing left to keep him on the unit's flagship, and to be honest he wasn't M'Quve's biggest fan. It wasn't as if he held anything against him for his alleged misconduct during the independence war (God knows he had done his share of questionable things), he just didn't care for the man or his eccentricities. Let him continue his loyal service to the cause at a distance. Ball absentmindedly tugged his gloves on tighter and then crossed his arms as he watched another crate of parts and supplies come gliding into the hangar to be secured.

He was supposed to meet the incoming pilots and help get them settled in. It seemed like the kind of job better suited for that girl Gwen, but then again maybe Pizal was more clever than he seemed not trusting even something this simple to her. On the other hand, he had heard she had been given a promotion a few days ago. What had merited that he could not even begin to venture a guess. His flat frown deepened into a scowl. Was this what the true Zeon was reduced to? He shook his head and tried to not dwell on it further. According to the papers he had skimmed, a JG that had originally been assigned to the ship, Baromsky, was supposed to be medically cleared for duty and on his way back along with some kid named Gorustal.

His eyes wandered to the large digital clock in the hangar and he realized the launch they were scheduled to arrive on had just left. He scanned the floor below him and just caught sight of Renard leaving the hangar proper for the ready room. Grumbling under his breath, he pulled himself back onto the catwalk and set out after him, his black half-cape drifting behind him. Supposedly Baromsky was a veteran too. This ship probably needed all the help it could get. Ball passed Shellia Northran and a team of mechanics tinkering with a Gaza next to the one Djorn and Nikolai seemed determined to sabotage and arrived at the door of the ready room. Figuring the other new pilot wouldn't wander out into space without an immediate welcoming committee, he entered the room looking for Renard.

Re: Episode 27 - The Beginning [Axis]

-bridge-
"Oh~?" Raquel's launch and 'swim' into the bridge room turned into a drift as returned on duty to relieve the secondary helmswoman. At one side of her she skimmed over her captain's appearance and seconds later noticed his new accourment.

"Congratulations, sir," while drifting still towards the helm. "May your personality do it more justice than Julian's did--God rest his soul."

-pilot ready room-
...this is why people learn the harmonica, Pris brooded to herself with one leg bouncing atop her knee, humming solemnly in a low throaty tone.

Once Renard entered the room she lethargically craned her neck towards him, and just as slowly greeted him. "Welcome back," she said in a clear tone. "With you and Ball we're at three again," referring to the number of veteran pilots aboard the ship.

A good thing, she felt. But Renard was no Kenneth. It was always good to have a fellow veteran to commiserate with if not just another pilot, but Kenneth was more than that. He was a friend. Propaganda poster-child he was, the late commander was one of the few things Pris felt she had a claim left to after warfare, the Earth government, marital issues and alcohol had taken almost everything else from her.

Even if she is a solider she still sought right to claim what was hers this world. Hopefully before they punch back in to combat she'd recieve a message from or about the status of other soldiers, other friends scattered about their fleet.

"The other zero-g dog that came with you one of us? Or a baby like the rest?" She queried from over her shoulder.
Hmm. Luke, this Gundam reminds me of a puzzle.

Re: Episode 27 - The Beginning [Axis]

- Endra-class Bindra -
- Ready Room -

"Welcome back. With you and Ball we're at three again.”

“More than most of these boats can hope for,” said Renard, pushing off the deck with the front of his foot and coming to a stop at an upper corner in the room, where bulkhead met deckhead.

He recognized the woman who greeted him. Priscilla something. Axis’s population had grown large in the surge of refugees after the war, but the confined space in which they lived, and the relative scarcity of combat veterans, meant everybody who’d fought in the war was at least acquainted. Of course, Renard last saw Pris several years ago, when she was still somewhat newly-arrived on Axis, prone to self-destructive behavior. It was a small wonder they recognized each other at all.

Priscilla turned to Renard again. “The other zero-g dog that came with you one of us? Or a baby like the rest?”

“Didn’t talk to him, but he looked like a kid.”

The other new pilot was some fresh-faced rookie - had to be a rookie; he didn’t have the look of someone who’s had other people trying to kill him. Renard spent most of the shuttle flight asleep.

Max Ball came into the room not long after the exchange. Renard gave a careless salute from his corner of the room. “Reporting in, Max.”

- Mobile Suit Deck -

Seeing all the hustle and bustle in the mobile suit deck brought an inexplicable feeling to Merzo Gorustal’s chest. Seeing this, somehow, made it all real for him more than transfer papers ever had; he was now actually part of a frontline mobile suit team.

The young man steadied his breathing and, in the rush of his self-revelation, had to stop and think to remember what he was supposed to do. He had to wait for Lieutenant Ball.

Merzo waited there, anchored to a handrail, for a short while, until it became apparent that nobody was actively looking for him. So he pushed off the wall and approached a pilot who didn’t appear to be busy, if only because Merzo didn’t notice that he had addressed another pilot floating away from a Gaza-C.

“Hey, brother,” said Merzo, lightly gripping Nikolai by the left shoulder, “Where can I find Lt. Ball?”

Out of the corner of her eye, Shellia notices Djorn and Nikolai fooling around on some Gaza parts when one of them gets a small electrical shock and he still goes back to tampering with the part.
Thinking about her early days in training when other students would be removed in bags due to not shutting off the power core, she decides to act before someone gets hurt.
She quietly side steps away from the pair and waves her crew back to work on the far side of the hanger.

"Congratulations, sir. May your personality do it more justice than Julian's did--God rest his soul," Raquel added her own recognition to the bridge crew's adulation. "Indeed," Wald exhaled sharply at the mention of Meighan's name. "Thank you, Mrs. Reyes," he nodded sincerely. He finally had to point Gina back to her seat to get her to stop fawning over him, and he turned for his own command chair with a small flourish, his cheeks a bit red.

- Ready Room -

Ball entered the ready room to find that Renard had already beaten him there. The only other person present was Pris Singh, making it a bit of a strange reunion of old-timers. The vast majority of Axis' pilots were so young and green that the three of them gathered together constituted quite a valuable collection of skill and experience. Ball had spent the majority of Maelstrom running for his life from high performance Titans mobile suits, but the fact that he survived in one piece spoke to his abilities. “Reporting in, Max,” Baromsky waved a salute. The man had been assigned to the ship before Lt. Ball, so there was no reason to go through any sort of formal arrival procedure. The other one was another matter. "Renard. Pris," Ball nodded to both of them as he brought himself to a slow stop in the center of the room. "Where did you leave the kid?"

Re: Episode 27 - The Beginning [Axis]

Now that the piece that Djorn was working on wasn't going to kill him...probably, he really got down to work. Using a pneumatic wrench, he was loosening some bolts as thick as his thumb. Of course, the hard part was finding a way to brace himself in zero G so that the bolts turned and he did not. He had to wedge himself against the armored plate of the Mobile Suit to get the job done. Though it did give him an idea for an entertaining game to play later.

He looked up when Nikolai approached and spoke. His bright white teeth broke out in his grease stained face when he smiled. "Hey, Nikolai. What's up? You can help me remove this coupling link. The damn things always break down, but this one looks pretty good."

His gaze drifted past Nikolai as the new guy approached. His sky blue eyes raked over Merzo, sizing him up. "Hey, reinforcements. I'm Djorn. This is Nikolai. I don't know where the Lt. is, do you Nikolai? Are you it, new guy or are there more new guys wandering around here?"

Being neck deep in a Gaza had kept Djorn from noting Renard's entrance into the ready room.

"Hey, Nikolai. What's up? You can help me remove this coupling link. The damn things always break down, but this one looks pretty good."

He was about to respond to Djorn's request when he felt a hand close over his left shoulder. The young pilot jerked back half expecting to see Graden back from the dead, telling him about an infraction he had made or some mistake while flying. Instead it was a new pilot looking for their new CO.

“Hey, brother, where can I find Lt. Ball?”

Before he could regain his composure and answer Djorn jumped in, "Hey, reinforcements. I'm Djorn. This is Nikolai. I don't know where the Lt. is, do you Nikolai? Are you it, new guy or are there more new guys wandering around here?"

"Yeah, I thought I saw him earlier, waiting around the ready room. Was supposed to meet you here? Maybe he went back to the ready room. I could take you there."

He then realized they hadn't gotten the name of the new guy. Extending his hand, "As he said, I'm Nikolai. And you are?"

"Where did you leave the kid?"

Renard shrugged. “Didn’t see much of him after I got off the shuttle. Kid’s probably wandering around the suit deck.”

The newly-returned pilot tugged at his duffel. It was meager compared to what most pilots brought aboard their ships, but nonetheless Renard said, “Which rooms are free?”

- Mobile Suit Deck -

Merzo grinned just a bit more widely than he’d intended when he took Nikolai’s hand. “Nikolai, Djorn. Name’s Merzo. Some other guy with a metal jaw came in with me, but I don’t know where he went after we got off the shuttle.”

The new guy then gave a quick look around the MS deck. Merzo had of course been instructed on where to find certain key locations aboard an Endra-class cruiser, but didn’t want to openly admit that he’d forgotten where the ready room was supposed to be, and there was no way he was fishing out the little paper directory he had in his duffel. “You said he was probably in the ready room, yeah?” The words hadn’t left his lips before he was sure he’d made it too obvious.

Djorn had a ratchet in his hand and he flipped it over so that he was grasping the business end instead of the handle. Idly, he started twisting it like one of those noise makers that they give out on New Years Eve.

"You oughta help the new guy out, Nikolai. I got this taken care of. Merzo here needs a tour of the ship, anyway," Djorn tossed in.

"Whoa. A guy with a metal jaw? Is that just a metaphor for being a tough guy or did he really have a metal jaw?"

Reacting in part from a tinged nerve and doubt, Pris' reply to Renard was an derisive snort without turning to his general direction.

"You'll maybe want to save that for later," turning to him. "Better to rest with that Titan thing in your head. Especially if there's more than one of them," speaking forebodingly before turning to Ball.

"Please tell me there's at least some more intel on it. Even some more footage," grimacing on the memory of the Titan mobile suit that wiped out Max's squad and gave chase after him like a hellhound before jumping into the middle of the fray between them and AEUG Rick Dias, proved to be more than a match for the latter, downed at least one ship on its own. "Thing is a beast..."

"There's a pilot's room with the name plate 'Meighan' that's open. Belongings were cleaned out last week," Ball answered Renard. Julian had been a pilot of some standing, but Max hadn't known the man personally. Supposedly he had gone spying on the AEUG for a while. "You'll maybe want to save that for later. Better to rest with that Titan thing in your head. Especially if there's more than one of them," Pris added before turning back to Max. "Please tell me there's at least some more intel on it. Even some more footage... Thing is a beast..." she muttered, making a face at the thought of the devil that had chased him through the debris and all the way to the Bindra. He had done his share of thinking about it during their downtime. Cernel Joson, Kirk Spach, and several other 'high profile' vets had met their death during the AEUG's attack, and most of them had been killed by the Titans.

Ball scratched his chin and answered gruffly, "Computer said it was a Barzam, but that seems like a load of crap,". He had gone over the data they had on the Titans Barzam mobile suit and most of it didn't match up with what he saw first hand. Either their spies or their combat data was flawed, or that wasn't a Barzam he ran into in the debris. "They did figure out that it was some kind of 120 mil it was using. I.D.'ed it from the holes in my Gaza and the ship. Didn't think the Feddies were still playing around with that sort of thing,". He crossed his arms and added, "Got all the film from my suit and everyone else that pointed a monoeye at it if you want to take a look. They spliced most of it together into a composite to try to figure out what the hell it is,".

"That one busted a picket and tore my old team to shreds, but I'd be more worried about the blue one that chewed up Spach and his men like they were nothing. Cernel and I had rookies along with us and got jumped in a shoal area. That's one thing. Spach met that thing head on and it toyed with him like a cat with a mouse."

"Either that, or a bet," Djorn replied to Nikolai's comment. He waved at the new guy as the pair departed but before they were even out of sight, he turned back to the task at hand.

As he removed the final bolts holding the piece of equipment onto the mobile suit, he hummed that old song about bones being connected to bones but the lyrics in his head were mobile suit parts.

Renard remained silent during the exchange between Pris and Max. His training and experience in reconnaissance = gave him a certain appreciation for gathering intelligence on the enemy. He had spent a good deal of time reviewing what intel Axis had on AEUG, Titan, and EFSF forces during his recuperation. To hear that the Titans had apparently rolled out two new models when the Barzam was still young, especially since they had apparently been disowned by the Federal government according to rumors, struck him as more than a little strange.

“Get me a copy of that data too, Max. That and whatever it was that got Spach’s team.”

- Mobile Suit Deck -

Merzo caught himself grimacing when the other guys saw right through him and knew he needed a guide. His hopes of not coming off too green dashed, he pushed off the bulkhead to follow Nikolai to the ready room.

"I'll let you know when I get back if he'd telling the truth," Nikolai called to Djorn. He took a gripper and, as he rounded a corner into an adjoining corridor, he said back to Merzo, "Think he got it in a science experiment?!"

Merzo followed on the next gripper. As he came around the turn into he could see Nikolai only a short distance ahead. Not much further down the corridor he could see the door that lead the pilot ready room. “Science experiment? Hell if I know. It’s just bare metal, why the hell would a guy get that instead of normal prosthetics?”

“Get me a copy of that data too, Max. That and whatever it was that got Spach’s team.”

"I'll do that," Ball nodded, uncrossing his arms, "Both of you should have copies of my delightful little 'report' by 1900. I'm sure it'll inspire the same confidence in you that it has in me,". He used the toe of one boot to skillfully turn himself towards the door and looked back over his shoulder as he was exiting, "I'm sure everyone will be glad to have you back aboard, Renard,". He glided through the ready room door and brought himself upright in the hallway, his uniform's cape hanging freely behind him. Tuzenbach and the rookie he was searching for were headed in his direction, so he pushed himself away from the wall to make way from the gripper mechanism and waited. "You're Gorustal, then?" he asked gruffly.

- Hallway -

Capt. Wald allowed the gripper to drag him towards his quarters as he allowed his thoughts to dwell on his meeting with Haman-sama again. Things were happening so rapidly since their return from exile. It scared him in a way to think that they were on the brink of a time of do-or-die action on and around Earth, a place that was still somewhat of a mystery to him. He hadn't set foot upon the planet during the Independence War, which he felt embarrassed about in a way - the fighting in space had been awful, just like it was on Earth, but he knew there were veterans (like Lt. Ball, for example) that acted as if he hadn't seen "real" combat because he hadn't had to sit crammed in an HLV after being rolled up at Odessa. He lightly touched the rose secured near his collar. What could they say now? He was the one that had been given Haman-sama's blessing. Let them scrabble in the dirt in their metal coffins again when they returned to Earth. He didn't need to prove himself to anyone any more.
