Well my comment was ment as sarcasim but that always seems to get lost on the internet.

Any way I have a question for Tim. Do you think that Votoms was a product of what many call the golden age of creativity for anime(the mid 80s), inventing its own sub-genre along with other shows Dunbine with fantacy mecha, Legend of the Galactic Heros with space opera. Or was its ideas groundbreaking enough to break out on its own no matter when it came out?

Thanks guys and thanks Tim for your participation in the podcast. Very fun and entertaining to listen to your past and present career, I remember hearing your name come up a LOT when I got into the anime hobby back in the early 90s, it's cool to see where your career has gone onto since then.

question for Tim, when you were talking about unofficial Votoms sequels in written form only, I vaguely remember something about the 'Equal Ganeshis (sp?) novella published in Newtype based on the accompanying artwork. Since I've heard you mention it on the podcast I've been trying to google any existing info or images online but without much success, is there another spelling you know of I can use to find more info?

Re: Ep. 072 - Starblazing Saddles!

Mekton GM: I think of the 80s as the golden age because of lots of different factors that all coalesced together.

First there was the maturing of the audience and the marketing aimed at them. Kids who watched anime in the 70s kept watching in the 80s as teens, and the writing matured to keep them fed. At the same time, writers & directors who came up through the 70s became showrunners in the 80s, and they actually had something to say. They were the postwar generation, born at the right time to watch Japan rise from the ashes and the spectre of WWII hung over their families. They experienced huge change as they grew up and it gave them a lot to process. Then there was the growth of the craft itself, new techniques and styles coming at us from all directions.

I'm sure those who worked through it all at the center of the storm have their own mixed opinions about what it was like, but for an anime consumer it was pure heaven. I don't think Votoms could have been created at any earlier time, and if it came 10 years later it wouldn't have had nearly as much impact.

Kayone: If Equal Ganeshis spawned anything outside the pages of New Type, that would be news to me. I'd suggest looking up the katakana for it and using that as a search term. In fact, here, I'll get you started: Equal ガネシス

I just tried it at Amazon.co.jp and Yahoo.jp auctions, but nothing came up. Maybe you'll have better luck.

Great episode I enjoyed the interview. I have never seen yamato or votoms. After hearing all the good things you guys had to say I think maybe I should check those shows out. You guys did get me to watch turn a and gundam x and macross. And I love all of those shows now.

Re: Equal ガネシス
So I only read a few of the novella serialization episodes in New Type, but here is what I remember.

The AT mecha was replaced by android soldiers called RobotLive. Yes, lame name, but whatever. They were definitely not human or cyborgs. They were robots. You can imagine this to be a continuation of the Nextant technology. Nextant technology was already a continuation of the AT technology, such as muscle cylinders which are artificial muscle technology. Just imagine the Nextant sub-brain that Taitania had becoming so advanced that it becomes the primary brain. So these RobotLive soldiers are built and modified according to the role they play in combat. The one I remember the most, because of the illustration, was the ranged fire specialist. This android had long flowing hair. The hair was a type of solar cells to augment his energy output from internal generators. He needed as much power as possible so he could fire his lasers more often.

The story follows a small squad of these soldiers. They do not have free will. They are given orders to take out a commander type unit that has gone rogue. Despite all the programming safety of absolute obedience, this particular unit refused orders, declared itself independent, and apparently can influence others to also disobey. In other words, this rogue unit has free will and can induce free will in others. This does not sit well with the top brass so they are sending in this special squad to assassinate him.

That is the story set up. I vaguely recall that a human was attached to this squad to oversee the mission and had kill switches in case his squad also rebelled, but I might be making that up. It was a pretty cool concept and I didn't even realize it was set in the Votoms universe until Astragius was mentioned.

This work was never collected into a tankoubon as far as I know. I would love to have it and read it if it ever comes out.
