Re: Ep. 054 - I Am Gundamn!

For Iron Man.
Ok so firstly, his suit wasn't powered by Repulsor Tech.
It was his Arc Reactor he made out in the cave with Yin Sen, Neo! :P
Kind of got that detailed muddled up there.
Although got to love the testing of his repulsors and feet rocket boosters in the lab and only 5% power flung him backwards accross the room

On Iron Man 2.
The Suitcase armor is the Mk5 armor wikipedia has a list of the names of the armors and stuff.
I agree on the small bits of armors wars and demon in a bottle like story parts, but the armor wars stuff has potential to be in further movies and I have 1-2 characters in mind that could fit that bill perfectly.

But it's about time the Iron Man episode came out though.

For future Iron Man villians I would like to see, Spymaster, the Ghost, Bettle, Blizzard and Titanium Man can all be good candidates as future Iron Man movie enemies.

I loved both the movies alot, I agree Iron Man 2 is a little bit under the first but not by much.
Also the Mk5 amror is a homage to the Mk12 Modular amror and Silver Centurion armors in terms of looks and colours ect.
Finally as I said in the thread in general discussion, I love War Machine's arnaments and he was a weaponized and slightly upgraded Mk2 armor.

Apparently Tony's armor was up to Mk6 armor in Iron Man 2 and all that.
I also noticed the hall of armors of sorts with armors in the racks in storage and all that a niffty touch.

That is all I have to say until more people reply.

Re: Ep. 054 - I Am Gundamn!

At the risk of being stripped of my geek credentials, I just wasn't interested enough to go and see the Iron Man movies.

Anyway, thanks for discussing my mailbag submission, and you did raise some good points. I am aware that Japan doesn't have the same attitude towards gender equality as westerners do, and am aware of the issues with that, but I was thinking about the topic in regards to other Japanese shows, so comparisons with the west don't really apply.

Maybe I am being too harsh on 00 - I may have mentioned before that, on this issue of the female characters at least, Code Geass and Macross Frontier did very well, and may have made it look worse by comparison (and no, I don't think it's necessary for a character to be a pilot to be a strong character - I regard Sheryl Nome as one of the strongest female characters I have seen in any anime).

However, while I like Kati, I really don't think you can call her a "prominent" character. I don't think she got enough screentime or plot relevance to even qualify as a secondary character - IMHO, she's a tertiary character.

I may not agree with your conclusions, but I can definitely see where you're coming from, and the show's as good to listen to as always.

Chris, by finding/creating the Iron Man episode haven't you now in essence trolled yourself along with the Gundamn crew?
aka the joke of the lost Iron Man episode, it's all real now :P

You know what I mean the Megacon 2010 special, it now exsists/can be found, unlike Unicorn which doesn't exsist in your universe yet even though it arrived in your mailbox :P

Re: Ep. 054 - I Am Gundamn!

I really liked Iron Man and like you guys I was not totally convinced that Robert Downey Junior would be a good fit for Tony Stark but I was very pleased to be wrong. I really thought that it set the new standard for comic book movies, with some good character development mixed in with the action and adventure. I really didn’t have an issue with Terrance Howard as Jim Rhodes but I do agree that Don Cheadle was an upgrade.

I also liked Iron Man 2, as it kept most of the spark from the first movie. I tend to think that Tony being poisoned by the arc reactor bit was a cheap plot device used to send Tony in a downward spiral……..again. But, I am willing to overlook it as most comic book movies have a lot of cheap plot devices and this was far from being the worst. I will say that I disagree with Soul Bro’s opinion on Whiplash; I think the lack of appearances made him an even more menacing character. You didn’t know what he was doing or how he was doing it but you knew he was a very dangerous man. Plus the fact Mickey Rourke did an excellent job of playing the man seeking revenge made the character that sinister.

P.S. Thanks for the plug I really appreciate it, oh and the special guest in my review I really don’t need him around anymore. You can have him back………………….please!

Yeah, although, that was probably more when he built the MK1 and stuff and obviously the first suit was never made to really fly just to fight/take damage like a tank and all.

Anyway as I said, still love the Mark 5 and War Machine armors in Iron Man 2.

Re: Ep. 054 - I Am Gundamn!

Had to play a little catch up again ^^" I think it was the ep before this that had a comment regarding me, Xbox Live and Strike Witches. I don't need to watch Strike Witches on Xbox Live cuz I own the box set :D

Anyways, it's a miracle! We finally got the Iroman episode! Now where's Duke Nukem Forever....

I liked both movies, and I also say the first is slightly better. Two had plenty of moments though. Don Cheadle was an improvement, War Machine was awesome, and Black Widow was ultra hot. The final fights of both movies were lacking a bit of umph, though, but were still pretty cool. I like how, aside from Iron Man, nothing gets named, but the names still get dropped, like Stane saying they're iron mongers and I believe some army dude said something like "get your war machine ready." Just a little touch I'm quite fond of.

So next up is Thor, who I half jokingly keep saying "Nobody cares about Thor." I can't see that movie doing too well, and they're going to do an Ant Man movie too? It's really no surprise that Disney bought Marvel out =/

Re: Ep. 054 - I Am Gundamn!

Good episode. I'm so happy to finally be able to listen to that Iron Man segment even if it is about 2 years over due and welcome back Chris!

In the Iron Man segment I completely agreed with you guys. The characters really made that movie work and the actors portrayed all of the characters really well. I had never read an Iron Man comic so when I went into the movie I didn't know what to expect and I'm glad that its a good rendition of the comic.

On Iron Man II I'd have to agree with SBR that the middle was a bit lacking. I felt the movie went too far in showing how Tony was getting ready for his death. Some of the things he did were funny, but honestly after a point it just was too much in my opinion and watching him fight Rhodie was just stupid. I felt that time could have been spent on developing Whiplash as a villain. It seemed like in some ways Whiplash was tacked on as a villain for the middle of the movie, but at the end he really delivers so by the end its not a big deal.

Even with all of these problems I still liked the movie overall and in many ways it towers over a lot of other Comic book movies that are out there.

Thanks for the props Soul Bro and for using my suggestion!

Re: Ep. 054 - I Am Gundamn!

OK, now we are on American-comic based movie, I wonder if you guys will do the same with NG:Evo or Robotech (if those ever get done!).

I personally never saw the comics, but I did watch the late 90's animate series on FoxTV. In terms in the quality of storyline and character development, its pretty good for both Iron Man movies, heck much better than X-Men, the Hulk, DareDevil...

My bros and I did agree that RD Jr. was the perfect choice to play Iron Man, despite his troubled past; people tend to forget that RD Jr. is a talented actor.

OK, spotlight on the ladies, which was brought up in the mailbag.

As a person that grew up with traditional Asian family values, I do agree that in MOST cases, the role of women is secondary when compared to men. And I agree in most Gundam series (and some anime as well ), women are not weak characters, I do agree with you guys on the ladies in Gundam 00, while they don't exhibit a masculine aura/physique, they do have inner strength that rivals or surpassing other men in the series. Though if you were to look at the character designs, you could counter that the ladies of Gundam 00 have too much booty, especially compared to earlier Gundam ladies (that can be said the same for Code Geass  ).

I'll stop here, and I know we do have female followers on this site, would like to know what the ladies think. I did know one female fan hated the PINK mecha units in anime.

Re: Ep. 054 - I Am Gundamn!

I had actually watched at least a few times on DVD since my first time at Metreon 2 years ago, and I actually thought that movie is really good. Even though I was disappointed that I missed the final scene with Samuel L. Jackson, I was able to see it later on. Now, I do come up with some observations:

First, before RD Jr. took over as the title character, I've heard of names like Nick Cage & Tom Cruise got tagged with the title, and had it been happened (and knowing what I know now about them), I might not want either of them; and especially true with Cruise, who to be frank, he's so overrated as an actor and exacerbated by the fact of his religious affiliation .... and i don't think either of them could have captured how an addict could be like Downey had in real life. Also speaking of Downey, he has been practicing Wing Chun martial arts fighting method as a way to keep him from drug issues.

Second, as for Paltrow, she actually hadn't been acting for a few years (while having children during that time), and still managed to capture the frustration of being Stark's secretary/lover, though they could have casted a younger person to cast as Pepper Potts. As for Rhodey casting, it's a tough call between Terrence Howard & Don Cheadle, though like Chris said, Howard's Rhodey had whined to no end. But here's why Howard was casted initially: Cheadle was doing Ocean trilogy and other independent projects around 2007 (same time the movie began filming), so they had no choice but to cast Howard. "Next time, baby", sorry Terrence, it's not for you.

Third, with regards to Jeff Bridges, to be honest, I literally can't even recognize him at all with that beard and being a baldy. I have seen some of his movies over the years and his performance was unbelievable in this movie. His efforts literally disarmed the viewers as he looked as a friendly face in public while Staine's mean streak and deviousness was well hidden until toward the end. As for Sam Jackson, even with his brief appearance (like his rendition on the "infamous" Star Wars prequel trilogy) revealed his importance later on with Iron Man 2. I should also mentioned that I bought that DVD just for that last scene after the post credit.

Fourth, As for Iron Man 2, I would have to confess that I've rather watched it later on with another movie (The A Team), so I would reserve my judgement until then. But from what I've heard through my cousin who came by recently, not everyone was happy about that movie .... , but from the trailer that I've seen, I think there's enough action in both movies. BTW, I would totally agree with Guanche (yet again) about not having too many explosion with the origin movies. Hello, people?! it's an ORIGIN movie, I don't need to see too many explosion from the first minute. Even Casino Royale and Batman Begins don't have things exploded unless the scenes required to have that. Otherwise, I've rather be watching an old building (like Texas Stadium) exploding by demolition crews.

Lastly, as much as I would love to see Mandarin in the first IM movie (like blending in Harry Potter stuff into it), having a valid & realistic substitue like the terrorist organization like Ten Rings is just as terrorizing with their methods of assaulting military convoys. Funny thing about the group's leader would actually showed up on Star Trek (2010) as the USS Kelvin captain. Tragically, both characters didn't last too longer (although Iron Man lasted longer). The arc reactor also looked rather realistic, although for that scene where Potts had to assist Stark to replace the miniature ones stuck on his check was a bit revolting (even though it was done via model & CG). The crash landings during testing the various components of the Mk 2 was quite hilarious and ironically painful. One thing I wished one's cameos wouldn't be done again would be Stan Lee, but it's still fun seeing that. Just hope Disney wouldn't interfere Marvel's movie productions with titles like Thor, IM3, Captain America. Otherwise, here comes another buyer's remorse from Disney (remember ADV Films & Time Warner when partnered with AOL during the early 2000s).

Re: Ep. 054 - I Am Gundamn!

I finally have some time.

I like this ep, as we now get the long awaited Iron Man & 2 review.

As I have just gotten into comic books as of this year, it was nice to hear the comic book side from Neo, I personally think the two Iron Man movies are equal in terms of what both did, which was bringing Iron Man to a wider world and creating the Marvel Movie Universe, as I watch both these movie I am personally not expecting a lot, as the movies are high on action but no so much that I can't not enjoy them.

The best part for me in Iron Man & 2 were really small things that you normally would not notice, like in 1 there is a mention of the bus that was destroyed in the final fight, and in 2 I love the Hologram moment when Tony is finding the new element.

I like how you guys looked at the movies and the overall feeling of the ep, Good Work.

P. S.

I personally think The Dark Knight still better, but then I maybe the only one who thinks so.

Dollow, I like The Dark Knight just as much as you, but the only issue I have with that is Christopher Nolan may have put himself into a corner because it was that good. Even with some certain "flaws" alleged by some of the viewers on some certain show, and one particular flaw on Christian Bale's voices, it's an origin movie. What would you expect from that movie? Showing Batman in the first scene with Wayne's voice had already been synthesized? Of course not, I could actually say the same thing with some certain movie that Soul Bro is so much of Capcom fan that anyone tried to put that in a realistic background is rubbish. At some point, if some movies got too entrenched into the original production, it actually damages the efforts trying to put forth. Another instance for that line is true is, ironically, the recent Star Trek movie. I don't really need to go into too much details about it, and I can confidently proclaim it is the best Star Trek movie, even surpassing Star Trek VI. What JJ Abrams had done with it was much better than anyone else could have produced, even with Leonard Nimoy directing. If Gundamn give a chance to review that franchise some time in the future (just a thought), may I join in as well?

Hm, you reminded me that I used to watch that series when it was on TV back in those days.
Hell I even have the UK DVD set just to watch the awesomeness of that show.
The second season was darker and more interesting at times then the first season.

Also to add something in to the point Soul Bro made.
I think for an origin movie, Iron Man performed pretty well agains the Dark Knight considering things.

So it's not like the newcomer was a complete pushover.

Maybe I should explain myself.

I was comparing the The Dark Knight to Iron Man 2, I know when Iron Man came out it was also the summer of The Dark Knight. When it came down to it, Iron Man 2 and TDK, Iron Man 2 was very good; but in the end it was same thing as the first movie with slightly more action. And like the guys said, the movies are two very different movies, Iron Man was more about the characters, and TDK was more about Harvey Dent and his story. I am not going to get into this too deeply, but in one way TDK was good because it really one of the few movies where the good guys loss (It wasn't a happy ending). TDK's story was pefect, the way it was done needed more work, where as Iron Man 2 had more likible characters and the story was easy to dollow. Batman Begins and Original Iron Man are on equal terms story and character wise.

The problem with The Dark Knight is that Batman as a character has so many different revisions in the media that the movie almost over shadows itself with what it is try tell with its story.

Bottomline is that Iron Man as a whole is more believible as a world because it is helpping the viewers accept the world that it is in, one at time with a bigger universe.

I hope that helps, I am not putting down Iron Man or 2, I was just saying that I got more out of The Dark knight as a person.

I relisten to the ep and I was thinking with the whole thing with the Marvel Movie Universe, it being one world, unlike the DC movies where they are their own stand alone movies, this cross over thing works better as viewers don't have to figure out how to care the character all over again, unlike say the actors who have play Batman, you get a new Batman and you have to start from the beginning in terms of how you feel about the character.

BTW

What is worse

I can tell you it's a coin toss between b&r & catwoman, season 2 of 00 was far better than those other choices by a country mile. Here's why: catwoman was a bit too half ass when it was adapted. B&R was a total disaster: the sets are horrible, the costume came from leftovers from the Power Rangers movies (the first one), and the script practically sounds too much like kindergarten - i.e., talking down to the audience. but B&R suffers the same problems that the previous 3 movies had: Batman was never really that popular with law enforcement agencies as he is a vigilante, and the indoor sets became too stale after Batman Forever. The slow deterioation of script writing just turned me off, and though I sort of still have them on VHS, I don't even bother watching them.
