There are so few work in progress threads here, I wonder why?

Well I had a few of these suckers arrive a few weeks ago and I'm working on revamping some of my tutorial videos. I'll be uploading some of the newer videos this week; I still have a huge list I want to get through. But figured I can at least post the progress page for the kit:

http://www.gamerabaenre.com/hguc_nu_prog.htm

I'm trying to take as many videos of the various techniques I use, but I may miss some or think they are inconsequential, so if anyone has recommendations as to what they'd like to see in video format or in greater detail, let me know. I'm using these kits to try to capture as many techniques as possible to have a more fluid tutorial presentation.

A little more progress...
I would have gotten a little more done, but I picked up the new Rock Band guitars that came out this week and ended up playing rockband with the girlfriend for most of the night. But here are some new progress pictures. I assembled most of the subsections. I still have to do detail painting so those parts are going to be masked off and painted. But for now, this is what I have:
Main Body
Arm
Leg
Heres what the aluminum thrusters look like painted with alclad Dull aluminum.
Thruster 1
Thruster 2

Oh man, why the Aftermearket Corolla exhausts :(

What primer do you use? I can never get my surfaces as smooth as that.

I don't know... I think the thrusters are kinda cute. Well, it's different from the standard thrusters. The second HGUC Nu may stick to the standard thrusters... I may replace them with a different thruster, not entirely sure....

As for the primer, I used Mr Surfacer 1000. There are other factors like airpressure, spray distance, and thinning ratios to account for. I spray at about 15-18 psi, and I'm spraying fairly close to the part. This gives the paint a little more time to dry on the surface and self level as opposed to drying in mid air and possibly beading up on the surface. With the higher psi, you are spraying more paint out of the airbrush, so lowering the psi helps keep thin even layers. For thinning ratios, I tend to over thin the primer slightly. The thicker the primer, the more texture effect you'll get.

Experiment a little with different psi, spray distances, and thinning ratios.

Tax day update.... I actually couldn't get as much done because I was spending some time working on my taxes.... at least Calif is going to pay me back for the intrest free loan I gave them... *sigh*

Well, on the a bit of work...With these hguc kits, there are a good number of detail areas that should be masked off. In hindsight, I should have painted most of the detail areas as they were indented areas and masking over those areas is much easier to masking in the other direction....
Start masking the part
I've also been using Parafilm. The stuff is great for covering large areas, I end up saving on tape with a small amount of parafilm.
Parafilm masking
And lucky for me, when I lifted the masking tape, the true test to surface prep is shown as the underlying paint didn't lift. I also lifted the masking tape a couple of minutes after painting. I do this because the paint isn't completely cured. I've had instances when lifting the masking tape, long after the paint has cured, left uneven edges as chipping and lifting occurs. This is easily fixed by scoring the paint along the edges of the masking tape, however, if scoring the edge can be avoided, it is best to do so.
Masking tape removed

Some more detail work on some of the internals:
Pistons and stuff
Wire wrapped tubes

Weekend update. I got a good amount of work done towards the end of last week, and a little work over the build gathering. Since I'm letting the clear gloss cure on the first Nu, I got to work sanding the second Nu. Additionally, since the second Nu was toyed around with and just lying around on my work bench while I was working on the first Nu, the parts needed to be soaked in the purple cleaner and then rinsed to remove all the oils, dust, and other environmental contaminants off it. The hobby knife and some coarse grit sand paper went to work on roughing up the kit, adding scratches, dents, dings, and blast marks. Here's the shield:
Shield Damages
Next, I did the wire wrapping on the tubes behind the knees. However, for more contrast against the first Nu, I went with a high guage magnet wire. The following picture is a comparison:
Tube Coiling Comparison
And I'm almost done with the painting. Learning my lesson from the first Nu, I painted the indented parts first, masked, then painted the main colors.
Paint the indented areas first

There is still a small amount of painting work left on the Nu before I can get it gloss coated and I should be able to get to the decaling for both kits later on this week....

This weekend, I returned to working on the HGUC Nus. I got them gloss clear coated and ready for decals:
HGUC Nu prior to Decals

Decaled:
HGUC Nu Decals 1
HGUC Nu Decals 2
HGUC Nu Decals 3
HGUC Nu Decals 4
HGUC Nu Decals 5

Here are some comparison pictures of the two Nus so far. In some of the pictures, you can see the weathering done to the decals.
HGUC Nu Comparison 1
HGUC Nu Comparison 2
HGUC Nu Comparison 3
HGUC Nu Comparison 4

Another small update. Using Model masters black enamel thinned with napatha based lighter fluid, I applied a wash for the panel lines, and here are some before and after pictures.

Wash ingrediants
Head before wash
Head after wash
Body before wash
Body after wash

I still need to finish the bazooka and the funnels. but for all intents and purposes, the first Nu is done.

Nu 1
Nu 2
Nu 3
Nu 4

nice work on the HGUC Nu :D the after market aluminum thrusters actually look good on it, like SNT1 before i was wondering if they might look out of place on it, but for me they came out well. the metallic sheen on the "frame" parts also look very nice and the decals add some very nice details without making the kit look too "busy". :D

Wow, been two weeks since I made an update, but I finally got off my butt and finished up the kits... sort of. I still have to finish the weapons and the funnel systems for both kits, but for all intents and purposes (that being the revamping of a good number of tutorial videos) these kits are done. Here are some pictures of the two kits:
HGUC Nu Gundam 1
HGUC Nu Gundam 2
HGUC Nu Gundam 3
HGUC Nu Gundam 4
HGUC Nu Gundam 5

Really nice work. The Nu is one of my favorite designs, my first build was an MG Nu. I really like the slender legs in proportion to the rest of the kit.

The placement of the decals is interesting, and the battle damaged kit looks like it's been to hell and back! I particularly liked the gold accents on the other one.

Great site btw.

I thought the clean one is superior. Would be better IMO if the gloss is toned down by a little bit, and I still prefer the original thrusters (or anything else, as long as it's conic)

You know, I was thinking about building a third and just using semi gloss as the finish, a sort of middle ground between the two rather extremes :D I have a third HGUC Nu, but I was planning on just having it snapped as an example for my presentation.

Perhaps I should buy a fourth and get a clean semi gloss finish. :P
