Hey there guys, I've been working on a Gundam RPG for a few months now. It uses another mecha RPG, Adeptus Evangelion, which is a Neon Genesis Evangelion game based on the Dark Heresy percentile system.

Any way, Mobile Suit Mechanicus (MSM) is nearly done, and I wanted to get some feed back from some of you guys, considering I used this site a great deal in it's creation.

Not in PDF form yet, but playable and just about every suit that's going to get statted is statted. We'll be releasing a "secret weapons" splatbook later containing some original stuff, prototypes like the Big Zam, Elmeth, Zudah, etc. Also it'll have rules for constructing your own prototypes.

Heres a link to AdEva, as you'll need it if you want to play: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=6JAJPHIL
And a link to MSM: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=A1ZEDJX9

You'll also probably need to aquire Dark Heresy's rulebook somehow, and it's suggested you get the Rogue Trader supplement for Newtype powers.

This site was a gigantic help in creating this, as finding out weapon systems and special features without it would've been a serious pain. Also, the lineart helped too.

So, what do you think?

You made them rar files instead of zip, meaning about six people will bother with it. :P

Really? Thought everyone used .rar these days. I haven't seen a .zip file in years.

I've been following this on the occasions it's popped up on /tg/, and your work is much appreciated (haters will hate though, especially on /tg/, but you know that already). Looking forward to the final, .pdf version.

Just ignore Jaynz and what seems to be a questionable attempt at 'humor'; he's a relative newcomer and speaks for no one but himself.

Tabletop/PnP game-related threads around here also tend to move slooowly.

I figured as much about the tabletops, but I thought I'd post it here anyway for you all to check out, like I said, MAHQ helped out a great deal in the development process with all those spec-blocks.

And haters will indeed hate, but I've gotten some kind words, and some well respected members for the community really seem to enjoy it, so that helps.

We're very close to PDF time, and now with more people logging into the IRC channel (#mobilesuitemechanicus on the Rizon servers...) we'll be getting there a bit faster...

While Zeta-CCA is already slated for being statted out after we do a "Secret Weapons of the OYW", we want to do an AU everyone would like to see done.

So far 00 and Wing have been suggested, and with some tweeking of the setting it could be done, but I'd like to hear what you all think.

Jaynz is actually a game producer, there, Ryujin . I know more than a few things about distribution, etc. for gaming.

The zip format is built into windows these days, actually, and it is the format of choice for RPGNow and Drive-Thru). Normally, though, you'll more likely see archives be self-extracting (into an .exe file) or as part of an install package.

For a 'document', the internet pretty much uses straight-up PDF for distribution, since it's already a compressed data-type.

RAR is more popular in Europe, still, as well as with some of the 'linux/unix' crowd (as well as some warez guys). Most people, including most of your target audience, do not have a native way of opening a rar file and would have to download a seperate archiver to get to it. Personally, as someone who is a developer, I never use RAR and don't even have a rar unarchiver installed at the moment.

In truth, I would just recommend always putting your 'release' form into PDF for distribution, regardless if it's a 'try this out' step or a final version. Most PDF makers (such as adobe or PDFMaker) have a 'print to file' option that does this automatically. If it's an issue for you (by virtue of not having the software), you can send a copy to me and I'll get it as PDF to you immediately.

Nope. Crawling through various backbone sites (you know...NSFW) of internet, it's clear that RAR does outnumber ZIP. Don't worry about "native way of opening a rar file", 7-Zip is free and is only 20 kb. If anyone has problem download file that small...he can't download your game either  .

But that actually proves my point about the audience. Unless the guy's only appealing to pornz and warez out there, then maybe he ought to stick with what the game-hobby is using, which is generally just straight-up PDFs (or bundles of PDFs in zip files).

Additionally, making your target audience download unrelated software just to GET to your own work is generally a 'bad idea' (TM). Always always always make it simple for the end user.

Dude, humans aren't that simple. A person rarely has just one hobby, so you say from countless gamers out there, there are only six people interest in other stuffs and bother to use RAR or 7-Zip?

Chance is, people who stick to narrow area of hobby are most likely never heard of your game either.

I'm going to be becoming a little anal here, and I apologize for it.

But, in this case, he's making an RPG product (not a formal project, a fandom thing) but it's primarily geared to gamers who want to play Gundam. So you're hitting the gaming crowd first and are therefore hitting their conventions.

Also, the zip or pdf option is easier for both crowds. Saying 'well, all these games should be getting into other things' doesn't help you if he's looking for penetration at all. Certainly if he wants people like ME to get it, he'll go the gaming route first... Certainly it's not additional effort in this direction.

Just my advice here.

Thing is, you said nobody will care about hsproject since he use RAR instead of Zip (ok, you said six, if that sound any better). And to me, that's just plain wrong.

It sound more like insult, actually.

True, but we seem to be up to two, and currently nobody outside of that circle. I'm offering a suggestion to make it more approachable to the audience he intends, and you effectively saying 'well all those people should get out more' isn't exactly helping the issue.

It was a snark, not an insult. I admit to being snarky as I find it cathardic. RAR is popular in Europe and in warez/pornz circles... but I'm also not sure that's really the rep that he wants to get if he's going to be doing more for this...

I never said "people should get out more". Actually, I assume that most gamer already has more life and thus most likely is more resourceful than you think.

You are one who think gamers are hikimori (never interest in anything else).

m'kay guys, that's enough. This thread is about Geremy's game, not vendettas against file archive formats.

Update!

We've worked out a Requisition Cost system, which allows you to order suits with pre-applied upgrades, so stuff like an RGM-79 Command can be built using the Custom Options with an RGM and then ordered.

We also re-buffed the Kampfer so it's closer to being the death on wheels that it was meant to be. Weapon upgrades are coming along as well as revised limb replacement, and some fluffing. We should have a final PDF release soon.

In addition we've been running playtest games with a Zeon and Federation party, running on different days. Zeon party is a penal brigade under Cima's control. So far a character has stolen an Acguy arm and attached it to her Zaku 1, and the party has encountered two prototype RMG-79 units.

Federation team is a number of first wave GM pilots who are going through training drills, and one character was pulled aside to test some kind of Gundam variant (We needed to make sure it's performance was on par with the fluff.)

Your best bet (to satisfy all) is to post different file types from different download locations.

So this is a table top game?

Not to sound like a dick, but no. It's just a .rar of the beta, if they're really that hung up on the file type they can wait for the .pdf.

Yes, this is a tabletop game, but that doesn't mean you actually have to play at a table top. Play over IRC or a chat engine with a dicebot is just as plausible. It's how we're running the playtests.

Just finished the Elmeth/Funnels/Bit rules, GM Custom's been changed to a GM Command, XUP system is out, a few weapons have been changed for the sake of balance. Also we've noticed Mobile Suits go nuclear far too often with the current Crit Charts, so we've changed that.

We're cleaning up everything we have now before I try and pdf it. There's not much left to do, we've even got cover art, so hang tight!

Latest version.

Requisition's fixed, added GM Sniper II, minor fixes to errors in the document, as well as the addition of the Kampfer's Chain-mine.

Unfortunatly I'm going on Hiatus for a while, and as a result our development team is now one person. We're shooting for a New Years release and could use some help with finishing things up. If you'd like ot help, even by being a playtester, myself and Brand would be very thankful. The channel's #mobilesuitmechanicus on the Rizon IRC servers.

Or, if you're not IRC savvy, you can just click this and enter #mobilesuitmechanicus in the Channel field.
