Grey primer is preferred because it's neutral. I'm actually not sure if it is actually preferred over white or not come to think of it. I've always gone my the rule of thumb if painting figures of people (like a resin statue) white is easiest to paint flesh tones over. And Mech get grey primer because it's somehow more realistic in tone. You can use either to your liking.
For painting beam sabers, I have tried a number of things. Florescent paint, of course, works fine. My go-to method is (for a pink blade) mix some gloss red and white with some thinner to get the darkest pink I want on the blade first. I'll hand-paint that at the base and tip of the blade. While that paint is still wet, mix in more white and sort of dry brush/blend that with the darker pink (leaving some dark pink at the base and tip, about a 1/4 inch on a 1/144 scale blade) going toward the middle of the blade. I'll mix in more white and do one more layer before just dry brushing some gloss white in the middle inch of the blade (for 1/144 scale). The affect gives a decent gradient of pink to light pink to white, to light pink, to pink.
I hope that all made sense.

Re: My Ongoing Modeling Questions Thread
If I prime, say... an entire model, can I directly use paint-based Gundam markers onto that without messing up the primer? I'm planning on painting my obviously all-white-plastic Archangel with a White primer and then simply painting the non-white segments right on the runners to save on time, with a retouch once they're clipped off.
