Masashi Ikeda: “Gundam Wing was a joke, we made it because we knew it would be popular with the public, the anime airing in that time period was all pretty bad, most of the same things seen over and over again in shows. I made a bet with a coworker that I could make a generic, bland, Shounen anime out of something popular like ‘Mobile Suit Gundam’ and it would become popular with the youth of today, just like all the other garbage.â€
Gfan: “So what you’re saying is, Wing was never meant to be serious, and has basically been tricking fans for over a decade?â€
Ikeda: Yes, although Wing turned out to be a fine anime when compared to other things at the time
If Wing was ment to be a joke, It has to be one of the Greatest Jokes ever created.

where is this from ? sounds fake to me even if he did say it I am not so surprised Wing was not that good I just liked the Mobile Suits. Wing got fucked over it could have been a little bit better but there is no point in complaining.
If he really did bet who ever he made the bet with was a fool of course the first Bishonen Gundam would sell there are like a few million bishonen anime fans in japan.
Wing was a decent series I cant say I did not enjoy some parts, for it to be not serious is a joke first off Wing was the first series to be serious outside of the U.C time frame. Mobile G-Fighter was a joke Wing came after and was planned out before they released it by sunrise.
They do not just make a series to put on tv with out thinking it over I doubt it was a "joke"

Some dude's blog is not a credible source. This exact thing showed up awhile ago on 4chan, and someone credited it to ANN, with a bogus link that didn't work. Unless there's an actual, reputable source that can be provided, this is complete Internet Gundam fabrication.

Yeah, this is basically a joke perpetrated by someone who hated Wing. What "Ikeda" is saying there completely contradicts every other interview he has ever given regarding Gundam Wing, as well as the interviews with the rest of the staff.
Seriously, if the show were just a giant joke, then why did they put so much effort into it?

I think a more relevant question is "What's more sad, the hoax or the fact that so many people see it as ultimate vindication?"

If I remember correctly, the guy on /m/ admitted he was just trolling.Chris wrote:Some dude's blog is not a credible source. You know, I'm guessing the guy who made this hated SEED and wanted to fool the fans (Despite my dislike of SEED, I really didn't like what that guy did.)
I am a general mecha fan! Anything from Mazinger Z to Gundam, Getter Robo to Macross!

Well, we know that head writer Sumizawa left due to the scheduling mix-ups, tho, but he returned to write both the Endless Waltz anime script and the novel, as well as (of course) Episode Zero.
As for director Ikeda, I've only ever heard of his leaving from one person, and someone whose word regarding Wing I wouldn't give a lot of faith, at that.

This sounds like internet legend to me. Not a lot of truth here, I would think.
Still, as a consumer your ultimate defense against being the victim of a joke is to simply have good taste. If the creator of an anime/film/tv show/book comes out after the fact denouncing the thing, it really doesn't matter as long as the product was good. J.R.R. Tolkien could have turned out to be Stalin and Lord of the Rings would still be a great piece of literature.
As for Gundam Wing, well, if you didn't at least have some dubious feelings about the quality of that anime, my advice might not be that sound

Well, it was past the halfway point when the whole "total pacifism" BS kicked in. ~__~Kavik Ryx wrote:I read the thing about Ikeda leaving the series half way on ANN, so it's got to be more accurate than not; however, does anyone know why he bailed out. Though personally, I wouldn't blame him, as my standards on the series remain low.
Though that was in existence since the beginning. And I think that for the second half Shinji Takamatsu went with the in existing scenario, because Wing had a different execution than X, also directed by Takamatsu san. Also, the head writer did not leave the project entirely; he however changed his place in the staff.
