I would add shows like Votoms and Gasaraki (is it me or this show is greatly underrated?) for a little more emphasize on realism, and oh, cool mecha fighting.

There are tons of good mecha/robot series out there but it depends on what you are after.... like the floor says,

1. Ms 08th Team, all time fav
2. Patlabor, humor w mecha :)
3. Appleseed
4. Armored Trooper VOTOMS
5. Macross series
6. Gunbusters
7. Detonator Orgun
8. Nadesico

There is more to the mecha than meets the eye. Cheers!

May I recomend Full Metal Panic. It's great blend of action, comedy, and drama. The references to gundam don't hurt either. A second choice would be Brain Powered, a good Tomino non-gundam series. It's more of a blend
of EVA and Aura Battler Dunbine but worth checking out.
