The only harem is Soujiro's brigade. That's a harem, to the point that even the anime makes fun it.

Even the "bad guys" got more development. The PKers from Season 1 certainly could have been ignored entirely. Instead, they've become regulars and nice people. Them giving all the (hand-made, nonetheless) toys to Minori and Tohya was pretty nice of them as well.

None of the characters feel very shallow because they're all developed together, instead of one at a time, as SAO did over and over again. You don't need to spend episode upon episode to get the development going, you just need to spend a bit of time every week to make people like Isaac and Billy Massachusetts pretty cool dudes. And Demikas. That was right in the feels, as well.


tl;dr. Lots of character development. Much better than SAO. Anime should not be underestimated.
