And over time, like Frontal implies in 7, this twisted psychic impression of Char's despair started to drive him and fill him in place of his former self. Thus when Lalah came and told him it was time to let go and Char, finally visited by the Ghost of Lalah he yearned so much to see while he was alive, was able to let go and when he did, Frontal was left empty once again.
That's nice for you, but people shouldn't have to read a novel or novel spoilers to get such an important detail left out of an anime adaptation. The anime reveals nothing about Full Frontal's origin or purpose beyond his vague ramblings about being a "vessel" for the will of the people. The OVA definitely fails in this important regard.
Though Banagher does call Full Frontal artificial during the last fight. It may not be much but it's probably safe to say that his origins are similar to his novel iteration.

Which is weird when you remember that it pretty much came out of nowhere in Gundam 0079.

Seriously despite it never coming up once before the Whitebase got back into space suddenly its this major ideology/myth thing thats been around for years.

It also doesn't help that most of the UC ovas pretty much ignore it, sop it seems more like a justification the writers are pulling out of their butts for why the best pilots on the hero faction are all teenagers.

But Unicorn isn't a sequel to the other OVAs. It's a sequel to the First-Z-ZZ-CCA sequence, and Newtypes are an important aspect to them. And they're really the "spine" of UC , not the OVAs, which are more the "ribs" (if you will).

Which doesn't change the fact that in the original Gundam the newtype concept pretty much comes out of nowhere.

Are you seriously arguing that Newtypes aren't a major part of UC mythology?

Because even if they "come out nowhere" in First, there are 3 major productions that put them front and center - and two OVAs that acknowledge them. And the novels use Newtypes. And every single subsequent Tomino work that takes place in UC uses Newtypes. They're part of the fabric of it all, Unicorn isn't anomalously placing importance on them.

Just saying for something so important to the universe, it sure doesget introduced like an after thought.

Plus if we're counting Turn A Gundam as part of the UC it looks like Newtypes have died out by that time since they don't show up, which is amusing since its after they're gone that mankind seems to try better at not killing each other.

I think a quote by Tomino basically confirms the NT stuff as a buttpull but hey Gundam wouldn't be Gundam without a little psychic fun. ;)

Re: The Official Gundam Unicorn Anime Thread Mk VI

For those of you wondering about the little scene with Char/Amuro/Lalah/Frontal, here is what Fukui has to say (from the latest interview in Gundam Ace):

Secret Story 2 When Char, Amuro, and Lalah appeared in the end, was that a rescue?

When Char and Lalah appeared at the end, it felt like a rescue.

Fukui: That wasn’t a rescue. When Char turns up at the end, he’s coming to reclaim something he lost. Frontal was created to resemble Char, but although his soul was supposed to be empty, something was dwelling there. That might have been that person’s ego, or it might have been the grudge that Char was holding. In the last scene of “Char’s Counterattack”, when Char’s soul is dispersed, it’s not strange to think that part of him consented to die peacefully, but another part might have been unable to consent to dying and remained in the world as a kind of grudge. Then, after having his grudge appeased by Banagher, and after reclaiming that part of himself, he was asked by Amuro “Are you sure?”, and he was finally able to move on to the next life. The novel was still partly showing restraint, but the movie project went this far, and they even got Shuichi Ikeda to perform the voice, so I think it was right to go this far.

Just something of interest... in the Ex Episode, the charter that they have on display has all fifteen articles inscribed on it. I guess it really wasn't missing after all :P Animation error, much?

Also, they mention Minaka Junkers in the episode. Hilarious nod to Gundam Officials?

The first time Amuro exhibits newtype powers is against the Black Tri-Stars, IIRC. It's referenced when they reach Jaburo, as well -- when the White Base pilots get checked out by Federation doctors, Amuro mentions that they did a bunch of brain scans and stuff on him, which none of the other pilots went through. It's not really properly introduced as a concept until Char reappears on the scene with Lalah, but it's not like it was completely unmentioned up until that point.
