I had a sort of weird thought and I shared it with some buddies at college today and shared a giggle or two with them.

Tell me, what do you think it would be like if companies like Marvel or DC localized mecha manga like Gundam or even if they made their own Gundam comics?

I guess it's like Astray..you're force to buy at least two titles in order to read the whole story.

No one would ever age, war would never end, no main character ever dies (permanently).

At least, if it was an ongoing series. If it was a limited series (5, 10 issues) thing, it wouldn't be that bad.

It doesn't matter which company did it. It's the writer and penciler that counts.

It Neil Gaiman wrote it, it will be more like Escaflowne or Aura Battler Dunbaine. Very fantasy. (Dream of the Endless)

If Brain Bendis wrote it, it be more like War in a Pocket. Lots of human drama and insightful dialog. And lots of f**k words. (Powers, Avengers Civil War, Secret Invasion)

If Gail Simone wrote it, it be like Ecole du Ciel. It's stroy from a lady's point of view. (Birds of Prey)

If Warren Ellis wrote it, it will a new universe, with lots of action and drama. And the lead pilot would be gay. ( The Authority, New Universe))

If J. Michael Straczynski wrote it, he would revemp the whole Gundam universe, and make a 5 years event. (X-men)

If Allen Moore wrote it, he will turn the lead pilot into someone with lots of insecurities. And the Federation is a Gundam version of Orwell's 1984 totarian government. After that, he'll refuse to do anything with it if Hollywood wants to turn it into a movie. (Watchmen, V for Vendetta)

If Chris Claremont wrote it, there will be so many super ace, and most of them are have a mutant gene. (X-men)

If Greg Park wrote it, Earth would be almost destroy. (Planet Hulk, World War Hulk)

If Jim Lee srote it, there will be a lot of inter Gundam universe cross over (Wild C.A.T.S) And as he draws his stories, the woman would be HOT!

If Frank Miller wrote it, it would turn into a noir detective story (Sin City)

If Danny O'Neil wrote it, he would dwell on social issues, like how much raceist Terrians are showing to the Spacnoids and the evil of taking drugs. (Green Lantern)

If Stan Lee and Jack Kirby wrote it, there will be a new super ace every 5 issues, and a new Gundam every 6 issues. And the lead pilot would have girlfriend problem. And his best friend would have family problems. And he would say some thing that every pilot would chant as a mantra (Like great powers come great responsibility)

By the way, Marvel did a manga like collection called Marvel Mangaverse. I think Iron Maiden have an attachment that looks like the Dendrobium and Mazinger. And Wolverine looks like Vegeta from Dragonball.

I've forgotten to add former super ace (60-80 years old) still getting a Gundam and battling out his opposite super ace in a Zaku. (Dark Knight and Dark Knight Returns)

If Jeph Loeb wrote Gundam, the main character would early on suffer a near-fatal injury, the Token Masked Villain character would be an old friend of the main character gone insane, the Gundam would get trashed early on and get replaced by a slightly different looking version, and the main villain would fake his death at least once and apparently die at the end.
The story would end with the main character walking away from his love interest shortly after the villain's "death".
EDIT: And a character from the main character's past who's supposedly been dead for years will suddenly and inexplicably come back to try and kill him.

(Not gonna say which comic I'm referring to, I'll leave you all to guess)

If Grant Morrison wrote it, Several new chracters would be created just to die, then the story and war would make no sense then, one of the main chracters with a no kill no gun policy will break that rule and die shortly there after. The story would be about breaking the standard, but in reality the same thing washed over.

If DC had control it would feel like a corporate production like everything else they do.

Marvel on the other hand, may have more fun with it.

What Marvel would do is build up the entire Gundam universe to the point where you wonder what keeps this universe going. The ace pilot will grow, get married, etc.. Then editorial will come in, bring in J. Michael Straczynski to write, and put the ace pilot/protagonist into a situation where he has to choose between 2 no-win situations. One of the people in one of those no-win situations will make the choice for our ace pilot, whereby retcon/deus ex machina the whole entire universe back to a point where the ace pilot is younger, not married, still emo, back into various relationships with the ship's crew. Dead characters will be brought back and editorial will claim it's "maaaaaagic" and declare a new status quo.

Gundam by Brian Michael Bendis-

-Everyone talks like a 15 year-old girl.

-Those that don't talk like a 15 year-old girl talk like a middle-aged man.

-Someone somehow ends up naked every episode.

-Somehow Luke Cage shows up.

Gundam by Robert Kirkman-

-There are zombies.

-There are more zombies.

Gundam by Mark Millar-

-Instead of giving an uplifting speech to reassure a scared soldier or a slap to "correct" them, a ship's captain will instead kick them in the mouth and shout "SURRENDER?? YOU THINK THIS LETTER ON MY UNIFORM STANDS FOR "FRANCE"???"

-After being kicked in the mouth, the scared soldier will describe aloud what just happened in vivid detail, i.e.- "OW! You just kicked half my jaw, a canine, and three incisors out!"

-Every episode ends with an extreme, extreme close-up of a character's face, and they make some epic or semi-badass proclamation that might not make much sense upon closer inspection.

Gundam by Geoff Johns

-Everything must revert back to what it was like in the "good old days".

-If you are a character created in the 90s, you must be instantly and brutally killed. No exceptions.

Gundam by Kurt Busiek

-The most important thing EVER is a minor detail in a random episode that aired ten years ago. Don't worry if you don't remember it, everyone will exposit on it until you're up to speed.

-If a character ever acted out-of-character, it's only because they were being mind-controlled by a time-traveling warlord or they were a genetic duplicate or an alternate reality version of themselves or a shape-shifter.

-There is a massive battle where every Gundam ever created by anyone fights each other. Drawing it gives George Perez a coronary.

Gundam by Joseph Michael Stracynski

-The power of Gundams comes from a mystic totem and lineage of mythical Gundam creatures from untold ages ago.

-Unbeknown to the protagonist, their girlfriend was impregnated by their arch-enemy years before.

Gundam by Joss Whedon

-Every girl between the age of 16 and 25 is Buffy Summers.

-Everyone is ridiculously clever and witty. Even stupid people.

Lets not forget that some Gundams can now travel though time and some are some are so powerful that they can escape the destruction of alternate universes when the timeline gets reset (Hello Nate, pilot of Grey gundam)

I'm not well versed with the writer's styles, but one' thing;s for sure:

Many alternate universes. Not just AC/AW/CE or anything like that, many alternate UC universes. You might as well start calling the original series Universal Century-616.

Mark Reid + Alex Ross:
it's been 20 years since the last major war, but minor conflicts constantly arise throughout the Earth Sphere. after a severe catastrophe, former Gundam pilot (insert name here) decided to come out of retirement, ensemble his old crewmates, and go on a campaign to stop the fighting before armageddon  and (insert name here)'s old friend is brainwashed to fight him...and said friend WEARS RED!!

This is just making me miss Mangaverse more. A magical world where Spider-Man was a ninja, the Avengers were the Power Rangers, the Fantastic Four were like NERV and Iron Man and Sentinels looked like Mobile Suits. Not to mention Wolverine was even more of a samurai. And Xavier was a total playa.

I would like to see some official western comics takes on the Gundam franchise. It'd be interesting to see what Mark Millar or Brian Michael Bendis could do with it. I think Brian Hitch or Francis Leinl Yu would be my choice for artist and I would like Joss Whedon or Chris Claremont.

All men would look like dweeby geeks or male sex gods. (Or, barring that, like they've been hitting the roids a bit too much.)

All women would fall between skimpy-clothed sex goddess, fat fangirl, or pure maiden civilian.

Actually, I was thinking to myself, if you thought seeing characters that are supposedly dead resurrected bad enough, just think what would happen when it's coming off of Marvel or DC. Sure didn't stop Superman, and how many times have we seen Magneto come back from the grave? That, and the fact we'd be seeing even more continuity gaffs. >>

I think the sterotypical view of women can apply to most gundam series. Most gundam girls are usually pretty attractive and gundam isn't afraid to use fanservice. I would argue that gundam has a pretty bad track record of positive gender roles, and there are arguably more strong women in comics than they are in the gundam franchise.

Now what team would best cover a gundam comic book?
I think that personally, Geoff Johns would be the bet one to pen a gundam series. He has good scope as seen in green lantern, but can handle smaller character driven drama. He could capture most of the big themes in gundam. He also writes some good action scenes and he knows how to set up battles. Art wise I would go for bryan hitch. He recently drew a comic for FF in which Reed Richards built a galactus-like robot. It looked amazing. Plus, I enjoy his eye for detail.
