According to the page here, the first director on 08th MS Team, Kanda, died in a car accident. According to Japanese wikipedia, he died suddenly of circulatory system failure, related to alcoholism.

I'd always heard that he died in a car accident, and that's backed up by ANN.
ANN wrote: (1996-07-27) Killed in car accident
Now, that's not to say that ANN's Encyclopedia is always 100% accurate, but I'm more inclined to trust it than I am even the Japanese Wikipedia, which can be just as much a victim of false information as its English counterpart. If there's another credible source out there that speaks to his cause of death (and doesn't cite Wikipedia as a source), then we'll see.

If you were to be killed instantly in a car accident, that'd be the very definition of a "sudden death", whereas dying from cancer wouldn't exactly be "sudden." Still, it's inconclusive.

No, the sudden death part comes from the organ failure. If he had died in a car accidert the phrase used would have been (jikoshi) accidental death, not (kyusei) sudden death. Sudden death refers to unexpected death, e.g. congenital heart defects and the like. The last page referenced says "sudden death due to liver cancer," and not one Japanese page references an accidental death.

I'm going to have to disagree on this. As you point out, the kanji for sudden death (kyuusei and kyuushi) can be used to indicate different causes. But that doesn't exclude its use in, for example, "sudden death in a traffic accident" (koutsuujiko de kyuusei/kyuushi). There's often a variety of ways to write these things.
But I am in agreement that the story about Kanda's death due to a car accident doesn't seem to have a reliable source at a glance.

To save us the trouble of debating how it is that Kanda died, I just edited the 08th Team page to say that he simply died.
