The other 08th MS Team director, Umanosuke Iida, passes away.
Anime director Jun Kamiya reported on his Twitter account on Saturday that fellow director Umanosuke Iida had passed away, and manga creator Koichi Tokita confirmed the news. Iida was 49.

Iida had directed the Hellsing, Tide-Line Blue, Mighty Space Miners, and CB Chara Nagai Go World anime projects. He had assumed the directorial reins of Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team after the first director of that anime, Takeyuki Kanda, passed away suddenly during production.

Iida also drew storyboards for The Big O, Birdy the Mighty Decode, Brave King GaoGaiGar Final Grand Glorious Gathering, Cowboy Bebop, Gin Rei, and Shangri-La.

Who knew that Gundam might be the key to peace in the Far East? Here's a nice article about just that and a recent visit Tomino-sensei made to Peking University, posted originally on Kotaku:

Media Blasters licenses Mazinkaiser SKL
Media Blasters announced via its Facebook page on Wednesday that it has acquired the North American license to the upcoming original video anime (OVA) series Mazinkaizer SKL. The project is billed as the "return" of the MazinKaiser franchise, which was itself a spinoff of Go Nagai's classic super robot manga and anime series, Mazinger Z. The anime was announced in Japan alongside manga and novel projects this past April.

Media Blasters says that it will release the anime next May on DVD, and possibly on Blu-ray Disc since the anime is being created in high-definition. In its Facebook comments, the company declared that its Blu-ray plans would depend on the Japanese schedule.

The announcement also states that the release will be "75 minutes"; the series will be three episodes long in Japan. The January 28, 2011 release of the first episode has a tentative 27-minute runtime. The second episode (or "Sect-2") will ship on February 25, and the third will ship on March 25.

Just for some amusement to those who might be wondering, the live action movie adaptation of Space Battleship Yamato ranked #1 in Japan's movie chart:
According to an announcement made by TOHO, Space Battleship YAMATO live action movie earned little less than 950 million Yen (US$11.5 million) during the five days it has been shown in 440 screens, wherein the actual weekend box office revenue for Yamato comes to 530 million Yen (US$6.4 million). The movie was seen over 412,000 times.

In addition, this movie is getting some international distribution:
An announcement made by TOHO, Space Battleship YAMATO live action movie distributor, that it won’t cast the anchor in Japan just yet. They stated that movie distributors from various countries including France, Germany, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, and Hong Kong have already acquired the rights to distribute the space opera movie in their own countries. In addition to that, they also revealed that they have received offers from US distributors as well.

Production Begins on New Yamato Show, Film
The Nikkan Sports newspaper reported on Saturday that Shoji Nishizaki, the adopted son of the late Space Battleship Yamato producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki, hinted that he has begun production on new Yamato works including a television series and another film.

Shoji Nishizaki appeared with singer Isao Sasaki and about 400 people at a service for the late producer in Tokyo on Friday. Yoshinobu Nishizaki had passed away at the age of 75 due to a fall from a boat on November 7.
