Re: Ep. 051 - Hot Toonami Time Machine!

As a bonus, here's the obscure original topic I initially wanted to talk about: Mecha-related Cartoons & Animes from the '80's. Being that I'm probably the only cat that would remember watching most of these, the topic wouldn't have had much steam in the long run. For those who grew up in the 80's or are curious, however, here are a bunch of openings of the shows I originally wanted to touch upon. Enjoy!

Re: Ep. 051 - Hot Toonami Time Machine!

Hey Soul Bro expect a full comment from me on this episode in my next post but for a mention I noticed something.
Where is.

Visionaries Knights of the Magical Light? :P
They would kind of fit on that whole topic, especially the way their armors seem to work being technology and magical element like based.

Anyway my main post here.
Ok so Soul Bro, speaking as someone who has played ALL the entries in the Gundam VS series so far, I made a thread on the discussion of it in the game section.
http://www.mechatalk.net/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=12457

As for Super Robot Wars games I noticed you guys didn't mention Super Robot Wars Z since it has an interesting line up of Gundam series in there.

And a unnique game that wasn't mentioned.
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny: Generations of CE.
I found this to be a rather fun entry for a strategy game set in the Cosmic Era Universe.

As for the 2nd topic.
For Toonami well I can't comment on it the exact same since the situation has been very different in Australia.
There are 5 main commercial channels/networks for TV broadcasting down here.
The thing was back in the very early 90s Channel 7 use to air a kid's show which had hosts and entertainment and prizes and also cartoons some which include anime like Sailor Moon, Robotech and all of those various shows.
Around 1995-1996 Channel 10 also had their own kids show Cheez TV, this was one of the big kids type shows which also pushed anime in like Dragonball Z, Yu-Gi-Oh, Naruto ect.
They also got stuff like Teknoman/Tekkeman Blade, they took Transformers Generation 2 in to the series, because, Transformer had it's own airing time slot at one point briefly before Cheez TV started, so that way it became part of Cheez TV's early line up.
They also aired stuff like X-Men, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Fantastic Four and a whole TON of other great shows, like Digimon, Pokemon ect a whole load of series.

So this was one of those big kids shows that lasted up until about 2004 when the show finished after about 10 years, then it devolved to a show with no hosts and just the cartoons.
Then it's current successor Toasted TV is a bizzare crappy successor that lacks the same appeal.

Tooanmi itself was not available but Cartoon Network on the Foxtel Pay TV channels aired most of the same shows back in the days.
Like Gundam Wing, uncut Dragonball Z, One Piece, ect.

But now yeah it's not as big as it used to be, however Madman entertainment sell a bunch of retro series that people remember when growing up and are bound to generate sales.
Like Voltron, Transformers, Robotech, Astroboy.

With newer series they do stream some of them but not all of them, like Gundam 00, Gurren Lagann and Code Geass are ones they have been doing for a while.
I think it will be interesting to see the direction of how anime and mecha anime gets distributed or how new anime fans and if they treat all old shows badly
Or if they might give them a fair chance perhaps.

One of the other points I forgot to mention actually is that well one of the reasons why Pay TV has not fully taken over all the good channels and programs on free to air TV.
Even now with digital channels or stuff there is competetion between then and Fox Pay TV things going on.

Re: Ep. 051 - Hot Toonami Time Machine!

I was wondering since you covered mecha games, has anyone ever played Robot Alchemic Drive? It was a game released by Enix for the PS2 and you controlled a giant mech to protect your city. It really captured the feeling of piloting a giant clunky robot and was totally awesome.

Re: Ep. 051 - Hot Toonami Time Machine!

another great show guys

i have to say that shinji preist during Chris's mailbox annoyed the heck out of me, and i have to point out if he thinks evangelion is "still in stores and gundam not so much" well if i wanted to buy it where i am, i would have to order it online... gundam on the other hand, seed was just re-released in legends boxes, 00 is still on the shelves, and from what i heard on the neo's news form we will hopefully be getting unicorn soon too, and as to being the reason i watched anime... well i have to say i knew about anime LONG before i EVER knew about evangelion (though i origonaly knew it as manga as my mum watched it when i was a kid, at the time i had videos of g-force (2nd translation of g-force, not battle of the planets) and formators (aka starvengers or getter robo g))

never realised there where there where that meany mecha games, some things id need to look out for in my local american import store, though the one i was surprised wasnt mentioned was zone of enders, but oh well

on the toonami stuff... so your not disapointed Soul Bro, our toonami channel led on from CNX and the only old stuff on that was the mask, swat cats and johnny quest (stuff i would of more likly watched back when i was a kid in the 90s), aside from that it was new cartoon network stuff (samuri jack, etc.), anime (which was limited, all we got from gundam was wing, no g fighter no MSG) and reboots (He-man, the batman) so you're inner child/nostalgia lover wasnt missing much, and if its any consilation id of liked to hear that topic you talked about in your post, maybe something for a later episode? :P

Re: Ep. 051 - Hot Toonami Time Machine!

I look at Toonami with this perspective. Time Warner started that channel by bringing back the old anime and cartoon shows in the 1990s like a library, then as AOL essentially took over Time Warner, some of the personnel from AOL decided to bring in the "newer" anime shows and brought the popularity in the United States. One thing I have to mentioned, however, the "partnership" between AOL and Time Warner was, quite frankly, was quite volitile at best. The fall of Toonami reminded me of the fall of WCW on TNT, which the corporate structure at AOL Time Warner during that time was very dysfunctional. One minute they would agree on something, the agreement got some or all of its contents altered 5 seconds later. Eventually, AOL and Time Warner went to their separate way, and Toonami was a casualty of that "divorce", much like the "marriage" a few years earlier that led to the sale of WCW to Vince McMahon. So, had AOL not feeling the "buyer remorse" and made some compromises with the Time Warner branch, Toonami would not have been terminated two years ago.

Re: Ep. 051 - Hot Toonami Time Machine!

Great show as always. Good to here a return to a previous topic (may have been the first episode I listened to).

"Those Gundamn Games! - More Gundam & Mecha in Video Games"

I agree in general with your sentiments on the Games of Gundam. The best one I've been able to play (we have considerably less mecha games here) is Front Mission 3 (PSone). It was the first strategy game I'd ever played and, being about 8 at the time, it made it better to be playing as mecha beating the crap outta' each other.
My finger of shame however must go to Gundam: Target in Sight. That was terrible. I liked the idea of the gritty real mecha but when you had your arms blown off from 1000+ meters away for the twelfth time, it got old.

"The Toonami Wonder Years: Your Window Drug for Mecha Anime!"

It's true - we did get our own Toonami Channel. It was awesome but it only lasted about 7 months before having its format flipped and moving it's programming back to Cartoon Network.

Thanks again guys.

Re: Ep. 051 - Hot Toonami Time Machine!

Great show guys i enjoyed the video game segment. I would like next time to have a guest speaker who knows a little more than two games for the ps2. I did think chris saved it when he pulled out some knowledge about the battle series and the psp. But i would have liked to have heard the opinions of someone who actually has played most of the gundam games. There were still many more that were left un said that are really fun. Like one year war, battle assault, victory gundam, zeonic front, and lost war chronicles and the wii one. I have played almost every gundam game out there so i could help but anyone would do that has too. I know you don't have time to cover them all but a knowledgeable guest speaker would be great. But hey i still liked the ep! :D

Re: Ep. 051 - Hot Toonami Time Machine!

Great ep, going back in time to remember what Toonami was like. Its too bad that TV has changed so much that something like toonami will not comeback, and cartoon network moving to more live action stuff, it seems very dark ahead, what can you do? SIGH.

Have a nice time Chris in Europe, look forward to have you back.

Keep up the good work guys.

Re: Ep. 051 - Hot Toonami Time Machine!

Great show as usual.

So, was I the only one disappointed by the fact that there was no mention whatsoever of Zone of the Enders? I personally consider "The 2nd Runner/ANUBIS" to be one of the greatest mecha games of all time, so I was a bit sad that there was no mention of it. I believe the ZoE has not been even mentioned once in the history of the podcast, but I might be mistaken.

Oh, and have a nice time in Europe Chris.

Saber, ZoE was mentioned a number of times, but it was never in details. In fact, I think Chris has said that he didn't really care about that show while got some sort of mentions. Soul Bro, please correct me if I am wrong, but I think you've mentioned ZoE a few times but Chris stumped you every time when briefly mentioned.

Well, I personally separate the OVA and TV series from the games. The animes are alright, but by no means stellar. Likewise, the first Zone of the Enders was kind of stiff in terms of control and combat, whereas The 2nd Runner has become the definition of "High Speed Robot Action", but yeah, enough of my fanboyism for the game.

Re: Ep. 051 - Hot Toonami Time Machine!

As for the "Rise & Fall of Toonami" goes, I have to make this confession: I didn't even have cable television until September 2004, so I practically missed most of heyday of Toonami. While I have had heard of Cartoon Network since the 1990s, I didn't have the opportunity to watch until then. Although I should say that I was "fortunate" to miss out the butchered version of Macross, Mospeda, & Orguss known as Robotech (especially I have already the Chinese dubbed version in Hong Kong as individual series), and Voltron. However, back when Cartoon Network first began, I believed that it was served as a classic cartoon channel, and not for new shows. I should also answered one thing about why CN broadcasted Justice League, Batman & Superman shows: when Warner Brothers bought DC Comics in the 1990s, that also means that Cartoon Network (and particularly Time Warner) essentially owns the copyright of all DC Comics characters.

One last thing, and this would surprise a lot of people, the last time I played any sort of PC games was Virtual Pool 3 on PC, and since I have never really been able to afford to buy video games consoles, I don't even bother to play them at all. However, that doesn't conclude that I don't consider them as art. In fact, I have been fascinated by the ever so improved graphics with each rendition of video games that are sold in markets. Yet, since I never have the skills to play them, my game-playing ability suffers.

No doubt there have been a ton of Gundam games. I've always wanted to play Ace Pilot for Game Cube, but by the time I found a copy, I had already sold my GC.

A few missing games that stood out to me were Climax UC (which was the 'sequel' to Encounters in Space, though Chris pretty much covered that with the Battle series), and my personal favorites, the SD Gundam G Generation games. SRW games are pretty fun, but SD Gundam G Gen (F and Wars) are amazing for Gundam fans. In fact, I feel like playing Wars right now!

Re: Ep. 051 - Hot Toonami Time Machine!

I've always been a big fan of turn-based strategy games and giant robots. Sadly, my only fixes for this have been SRW: OG 1 & 2, Front Mission series, and the ZoE GBA game. But I need more!!!

Since my two semesters of Japanese have worn off due to lack of use, I'm looking for games with translation FAQs or in English. Can folks recommend any good ones?

Also, can folks suggest good places to order said games from?

Oh, my systems include GBA/DS, and PSP, along with modern consoles.

Much thanks.

Re: Ep. 051 - Hot Toonami Time Machine!

I was listening to this ep again, and afterward I became a very sad that things will never be the same again, adult swim is still ok, but to be honest besides the anime, boondocks and the Venture Brothers, I don't watch any of the shows they have. Lets face it, TV is dying if not dead.

Re: Ep. 051 - Hot Toonami Time Machine!

Hey gang great show

I have not played a ton of Gundam video games but for the most part I liked them. I do have both DW Gundam games and yes they are not the most complex games in history, but I liked them simply because everyone now and thne you want a game where you can just turn off your brain and enjoy some simple beat em style game play with pretty graphics. I also have Federation vs. Zeon witch is a lot of fun but its at its best when you can find a freind to play it with you.

RETURN OF THE TROLL!

As for the look back at Toonami, I tend to think that CN killed the goose that laid the golden egg. I am willing to accept that ratings fell and when that happens you have to make changes. But it seems to me that CN didn't try to fix the problem. Rather they just gave up on Toonami and decided to go another route. I still felt that if done right Toonami could be a strong block for CN for many years to come. Then again maybe that this is just a case of a changing world of technology, and my wish that things would change at all.

Oh and one more thing, I hereby nomiate myself as guest host of Gundamn while Chris is on his National Lampoon's European Vacation....................what?...................why are guys looking at me funny?

I recommend you 2 send Soul Bro Ryu an e-mail to see if you 2 can squabble over the guest host positions :P

Anyway I also forgot to add earlier in my first post, for some reason the Back to the Future lines at the start at the begining of the episode, pretty funny

Re: Ep. 051 - Hot Toonami Time Machine!

A little late to the game this time, but I finally got to listen to the episode. Another great episode although somewhat more sad and nostalgic than the usual humorous tone you guys have. The mailbag was hilarious. I can't believe someone actually put up a question about Shinji and made it seem like he was the best character ever for that!

Going on to them Vidja Games, I was surprised you didn't talk about the best fighting game ever: Gundam Battle Assault 2! That game is still one of the best 2d fighting games there is out there. The third wasn't so great, but every now and then I'll pull out Gundam Battle Assault 1 and 2 for some fun.

Chris from what I could tell you played Front Mission for the DS, but honestly probably didn't like it too much. Honestly the best entry in the series is Front Mission 3. 4 was ok and the one for the DS....well lets just say I never got too far in the game, because its rather lack luster as far as most SRPG's go. 3 is the best one to play when it comes to gameplay, storyling, etc. Fantastic game that has 2 different story lines and the story lines branch out right at the beginning of the game and you don't even know it! Any SRPG fan should check it out or a mecha fan. Its pretty good.

From what I can tell Front Mission Evolve is a reboot of the failed release over here called: Front Mission Online. Can't wait for it and there was no mention of Super Robot Wars: Endless Frontier. :(

The Toonami segment was rather sad, but you guys hit all the nails on the head. I doubt we'll ever see anything like Toonami ever again. Its a shame that the internet has made everything so accessible, but watching it on TV only has its cons too. I remember recording all of Mecha week when it aired. I wanted to see all of Nadeisco and the rest of Evangelion back then. Still haven't gotten to Nadeisco.

EDIT: Forgot to mention this: Soul Bro in Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam you can't play as any of the ZZ Gundam characters in the UC mode, but in VS. mode you can. In UC mode they were just there as your allies. I love the version of Char's Counterattack where its Amuro and Kamille vs. Haman and Char.
The proof of our might will forever be etched in your minds.
