--Las Vegas--

It was Year 30, The Era of the Empire.

The Imperial Army, after having brought the entire world down to its knees in the name of the King, has since brought the world into an era of stability. Former countries and allied supernations were able to retain their sense of identity, but can only do so as a province of The World Empire. Gone were the fanatical and religious zealotry that plagued the world shortly after The Empire's declaration. Gone were the demands from every citizen of the world to bow down to the King.

Because, who needs some cheap bows and false worships, when the only thing that matters in the end is money. Yes, the Empire, these recent years, have instead opted for an equally appalling stranglehold on the people: Massive, massive taxes. The World Empire has started a worldwide campaign to suck the citizens dry off their money. They were preparing for yet another war, one that will put the last Great War to shame. Space Colony Liberty has begun patrolling more ships, and it won't be long until they started their offensive on an increasingly lax empire...

...And for Arrandale Bloomfield's Las Vegas, there is no better way to start collecting profits. Las Vegas, known all over the world for being an entertainment capital, has ventured into a weapons development program. It has become a hotspot for young adults AND criminals to buy, sell, trade or tune and upgrade their mobile suits. Engineering hopefuls and the smartest brains have converged here for a job. Untouched by the harsh taxes of the empire, Imperialists in charge of the North American front instead gave Las Vegas a deal that will let them use their technology, which was undoubtedly advanced and efficient. Bloomfield has agreed, and it resulted in an environment where the wanted criminal can see their Imperial captors eye to eye, mock and laugh at them, while the soldiers, being in neutral ground cannot retaliate. And that scenario often results in a massive shootout just outside of city limits.

Of course, if those said soldiers instead offered those criminals with cash for a dirty job that involves underhanded tactics like assassination of potential political enemies and quelling rebellions now and then, they just might see eye-to-eye, after all.

And that's why an Imperial Captain named Sharaf Aquean was here, in Las Vegas, in nondescript clothing. This was his assignment---to grab some willing bastards to find this new rebellion that has been talked about, but no one really knew. The Empire, as corrupt as they are right now, doesn't find it in it's interest to blow every city up in California and Nevada because this "Firebrand" fever has been whispered around in said vicinity. Their tracking is limited, due to heavy interference by all kinds of mumbo-jumbo particles in the air of different kinds, and The Empire lacks satellite tracking (which the space forces just shoot down with extreme prejudice).

Their best guesses though, is the rebellion may be around Barstow. No one's really sure, but the image of the Empire blowing up Barstow for no apparent reason may just inspire more unrest from all over the world... which is why Aquean is looking for mercenaries... Make it seem like the small town is overrun by reckless and heartless criminals, and Empire "arrests" them afterwards after the city's flattened, Empire becomes the good guy. Horrible, but effective enough.

Sharaf initially had doubts doing this, but since seeing its success have no qualms doing it. He's already super rich, thanks to the overly bloated public sector, but taking over Barstow lets him control the miners directly... even more money.

Sharaf just drools at the idea, so for now he posts some "NOW HIRING" in a giant board approved by Bloomfield... soldiers, scumbags and everything in between has found the board worthwhile, as it's a good source of income for the most part.

And with that he sits on a nearby bar. Those whose interested in the job description and read the profile would know exactly where to find him.

Outside the bar, there was a loud shout followed by a loud thump. All at once all the patrons in the bar turned towards the front door as an unconcious bouncer was tossed face first through the door smashing it open and landing on the other side of the bar smashing the liqour cabinet behind it.

"And thats what i think of yer goddam dress code!" Yelled a mountain of a man as he barely squeezed through the door frame. The uncouth man wasn't even wearing a shirt or shoes. His large tattooed frame was riddled with muscle, but there was just enough fat on the giant man's midsection to cause people's gaze towards his stomach.
"Watchya'll starin' at me gut fir"

The man wasn't alone either...

"Sheeit," the giant's companion jeered as he stepped over the shards of door left in the entryway, "Seems like most 'a these places hire bouncers fer show nowadays."

Hud flicked a stub of a cigarette onto the pile of unconscious bouncer and debris. "How about some service?" he yelled, roughly jerking a chair out from a table close to the door. He plopped down in it and kicked his dusty shoes up onto the table, leaning the chair onto its back legs. He eyeballed Sharaf for a moment, not doing a particularly good job of hiding it if that's what he intended, before snapping harshly at the nervous waiter that hesitantly picked his way closer. Pushing the brim of his cap up, Hud squinted at the waiter and asked, "Y'all got whores here?".

sitting at a table at the opposite side of the bar, Jorhan watched impassively as the bouncer was launched through the entrance like a missile by some shirtless neanderthal. so much for this being a quiet night.

to be honest he had a feeling something bad would be going down whe he saw Captain Sharaf Aquean vainly try to be inconspicuous when he left Lancaster Base and loosely followed him, afterall the the man had more money than brains, a combination that always spelt disaster, especially when alcohol was added to the mix.

taking a drag on his cigarette, Jorhan brought himself back to the main object of his concern, the R&D project at Lancaster. while he had to give credit to the people in charge for having the foresight to keep all blueprints and notes in written form and always stored them seperately in secure locations on the base, plus the thorough screening/searching for cameras and any other device that could capture images, he still had a niggling thought that security had been compromised somewhere, but for the life of him he couldn't figure out who, where and how. there was no point reporting it to the base commander, it would be a waste of time, and he didn't have the authority to conduct an independent investigation, the only person he felt he could discuss this with and have them take the matter seriously was Major Celeste Glori, but he had no idea where the elite pilot was.

after a sigh, Jorhan put his cigarette out in the ashtray provided and raised a hand to gain the attention of a waitress, he figured he may was well have a drink and a meal while he was there.

--Sharaf--

For Sharaf, those unruly men's entrance is par for the course in this particular establishment. After all, this area is where most negotiations take place, attracting all types of mercenaries. Sharaf himself is a frequent here, having hired all kinds of characters. So, in a way, the brown-skinned captain isn't so fazed.

He walks around and gets near Jorhan and confirms something to him. "I think I believe your concerns," he said after gritting his teeth. He, too, has noticed some data being accessed at unusual time. Thankfully the more important ones are printed and the electronic file permanently deleted. "Don't worry, I plan to find that out myself, intel reports says there's a 20% chance that the culprit is from Barstow. That's chance enough for me to make Barstow no more, but that won't be our job..."

With that he leaves and talks to the biggest mofo in the room, and raises his voice to match the man's loud voice, introducing himself. "You do that a few more times, and Bloomfield may have to come in here and personally drag you out!" Sharaf says to Scooter, not with a hint of warning but general amusement as the duo trashed the scene.

Upon closing in, Sharaf realizes this guy is much bigger and nastier looking than the others that he's dealt with. He's still not fazed, though he kept his relative distance.

"Looking for a job?" Sharaf initiates to Scooter. "I don't know if you're new here but this is the district where mercenaries get paid big bucks to do not much!" To have a look around, there are a few things that resembles contractor and mercenary. Others are flat out wearing Imperial uniforms from other American cities talking to some thug with a briefcase (possibly full of cash.) The other one is a crying woman talking to another thug, also being offered a briefcase full of somthing.

Sharaf himself was holding a briefcase. He needs to see if these guys want to have an easy payday. It is assumed that everyone here has a mobile suit, being so close to the tuner HQ and the general atmosphere in today's Las Vegas.

Warily making her way out of the Vegas bar's barely passable 'ladies room', Maj. Celeste Glori looked about as healthy as a squashed mosquito. She was wearing a thin, sweat drenched white tanktop along with her fatigues and combats. Her tanning face was showing a small bit of green, hinting at her recent activities within said restroom. It was likely food poisoning, Cel thought to herself as she meandered over to one of the bar stools and plopped herself onto the counter.

"Hardest ZOINKS you got..." she mumbled, praying that the bartender would hear her.

It was rare that Cel found herself hit this hard by something in her stomach. Of course, she had experienced a lot of new, unsavory things since she had been stationed at Lancaster. The Mojave was not her typical cup of tea. No, she preferred her homeland, back in Europe, where the weather stayed temperate and there wasn't random sand trying its best to get into every orifice.

The sound of a drink glass hitting the bar brought Cel out of her fatigued daze. She looked at what had been placed before her - a small glass of what appeared to be some form of tar - with a sickly stare. Luckily for her, alcohol was one thing that she knew her stomach could take. She took the glass and threw it down.

...

Cel's eyes went wide for a moment before, out of the blue, she slammed her head against the counter. There was no doubt in her mind that, whatever it was that she had just ingested, it had just slapped her brain in its metaphorical face. Luckily, it has also cleared her head of the ill haze that had been plaguing her all morning.

Wow... That's good stuff. she thought to herself as she took a look around the bar. She remembered hearing some sort of commotion earlier, and now she saw it. There was the bruised, battered, and bleeding bouncer with a liquor cabinet shoved up his nose. Also new to the scene were two unscrupulous looking figures, one of the the size of a hairy beached whale and the other more reminiscent of an orangutan. She vaguely recognized their faces, thought she hardly cared enough to think about where from.

More important was the man talking to them. Sharaf Aquean, a higher-up at Lancaster. No doubt that he was hear trying to convince some mercs to do some dirty work for him. She didn't care much for Aquean, and wouldn't think much if one of them attacked the man. He was a piece of slime, and she had more important things to worry about than his own self-inflicted damage.

Looking elsewhere, she noticed what appeared to be another familiar face. Jorhan Cortez, a man she had spoken to a fair amount of times, was being discrete at one of the tables. He was probably here to make sure that Aquean didn't get himself buried. She slapped some cash on the counter for the drink and wrenched her butt off of the stool.

With as much ease as she could muster, Cel made her way over to Jorhan's table.

"What's shakin' Jorham?" she said, sliding into the chair across from the older man. "You playing babysitter, or what?"

if jorhan was surprised at Sharaf being able to seemingly read his mind he didn't show it, merely opting to nod in response, and dwell on what the guy relayed to him as he walked off. so i'm not the only one who noticed, and if he of all people is aware that somethings amiss, then this may be more serious than i thought. about the he caught sight of Celeste making her way over to him, looking much worse for wear, the green tinge to her face making him reconsider ordering any food from this place.

"not quite" he replied in answer to her question as she slid into the seat across from his. "though there is a matter that has been of concern, i can't discuss it in detail here though"

[Scooter McCracken]

Scooter was just about to sit down with Hud, when he was quickly approached by some tanned skin skinny bugger in a fancy uniform. The man quickly offered them a job. "Big bucks to not do much?" Scooter turned to flash a grin towards Hud who was waiting impatiently for his whores.

"Gimme dat ZOINKS!" He said pointing to the briefcase with a devilish grin.

Hud Brody

Hud's gritty boots scraped across the tabletop as he dragged himself back into an upright position. His feet hit the floor at the same time as the chair's front legs, lending the abrupt move a sharp banging sound. "Now wait a minute," he said, holding up a hand at Sharaf, "We ain't mercenaries. You wanna hire guns, we're your men. But don't expect us to go signin' no contract,".

He rested his arms on the table and leaned forward conspiratorially, lowering his voice slightly, "Now, what exactly is it you want, mister? We seen them signs put up around town,". His voice rising sharply, he turned his head to yell at the waiter again, "Whiskey! And what does a fella gotta do to get some female companionship around here? Hurry up!".

Nobody noticed when Benito Molino – a man of exceptionally average height, wearing a leather jacket that had seen better days and dark green corduroys in a similar state of repair – had arrived to sit near the table. Maybe he’d been there the whole time?

“Hey, Constanza,” he said to the loosely-dressed, tired-looking women on his arm “Get me a light, mija.” Constanza lit the newly-place cigarette in the man’s mouth with a profound disinterest. The exchange between Hud, Scooter, and the man with the briefcase had occurred in the meantime. “Chica, you got any friends for my friend here? We been so lonely here, in Las Vegas.”

He gave no sign that he was paying any attention to the man that Scooter and Hud were interacting with.

Cel raised her eyebrows at Jorhan's words. So, he was here on that kind of stuff. And she thought that her own day was cruddy.

"Well, I understand. Loose lips, and whatnot." the pilot sighed, resting her head on her balled fists, her elbows on the table. "So, what's Aquean doing out here? Hiring goons to blow stuff up so that he doesn't have to put up with paperwork?" she inquired, wondering exactly what had lead the slimeball to exert himself so much as to make a trip all the way out here.

--Sharaf--

Sharaf just smirks as the thugs realized what was in his little bag, as well as the mercenary contract comments from Hud.

"Nothing, just a 'cleanup' duty in Barstow, no written contracts. Are you interested or not?" Sharaf got to the point. These 'cleanup' duties have been known by the general population to mean smoking a city harboring or presumed to be harboring rebellious organizations. And with Sharaf's look, it does seem to be just that. Straight to the point, he wags his bag just a little bit. If these guys aren't interested, then he'll move on to the next willing individual to do his shady deed. And he didn't seem to be fazed even when a higher ranking Imperial is only a few feet next to him and able to witness his shady dealings.

"yup, it seems throwing money at anyone with a gun comes naturally to him" Jorhan answered, noting that a third person had joined the unruly pair who made their dynamic entrance earlier

"speaking of which, a foul wind is blowing" with that Jorhan adjusted his tie as he prepared to leave "and i think i've seen enough of where our taxes go, you're welcome to join me if you wish"

Cel giggled a little as Jorhan poked at the stupidity of Aquean. A thought of some of that money being thrown her way came to mind, but she pushed it down immediately. The last thing she needed was that sleaze ball's dirty credit in her pocket.

"I'm with you on that," she agreed with her fellow officer. The gathering of slime in this place, not doubt courtesy of Aquean's antics, was starting to add to the sickness in her stomach. "I'll take my own car, though. I'm sure you don't need puking in yours."

Sliding her chair out, Cel stood and started for the exit.

“Are you interested or not?”

“We could be interested, Mister.” Benito’s attention turned suddenly to the man with the briefcase, “We just need to know things. How much money? How much shooting? Where? Also, on our last job,” and now he jerked a thumb at his seated companion, “My friend Hud here lost his Zaku. We need to get him a new mobile suit and then we can do the shooting. I think you can help with that, no?”

"i didn't bring my car, had someone from the motorpool give me a lift" Jorhan said is he got up from his chair and followed her to the entrance, making sure to give the trio Sharaf was conversing with a wide berth, only relaxing once the pair were out of bar and about to enter one of the multistory carparks.

-Lem-

As the pair walked calmly into the parking lot, Lem recognized Jorham first out of the two officers. He'd been in talks with a few workers at Lancaster for outside support as a civilian contractor for about 6 months now. Lem Specials rebadged as Empire machines?

Fine by him, he was getting cash money for it and a good chunk too. However his contract with them for support was coming up and was about to head out to Lancaster anyway to check in and respond to a request from the technicians there. With a smirk.. he decided to have a little fun with the man as they approached their car.

Just as the pair walked past a rather clean looking vintage 1972 Lucy Blue 455HO Trans Am.. Lem turned over the ignition on the completely 'straight piped' weapon of mass entertainment that he was wielding.

The resulting roar, amplified by the indoor car decks.. and a open throttle mash, would probably get some laughs. Why not.. most on base should know the man as a bit of an eccentric, foul mouthed racer anyway.

After the car settled to an idle he slid out of the drivers seat and sat on the drivers door window sill, addressing Jorham by the proper prefix and whatnot..

"Sorry about that sir, just wanted to clear out the pipes. I thought I recognized you from Lancaster a bit back. Anyone know about the status on the contract work there? Got one coming up and everyone's giving me the runaround."

Cel continued out of the bar, but instantly covered her ears when the loud roar of an engine sent her aching head straight to Hell. Her hands shot up to protect what was left of her well-being as she ran for her own car. The engine did die down, though, and Cel eventually had put herself behind the wheel of her basic rental sedan.

Resting herself in the soft driver's seat of the car, Cel started up the engine and got herself underway back to base.

"Yeah," Hud leaned back again, folding his arms, "I figure you guys'r well-to-do enough to gimme a suit to use as a sign 'a good faith an' all. I don't need anything hoity toity, understand?" He looked over the utterly thrilled "lady" sitting with Benito and gave her a wink that was returned with a totally flat stare.

With a chuckle at her non-reaction he turned back to Sharaf and shrugged, "Consider it part of our payment. To guarantee primo results, yeah?"

--Sharaf--

"I could get you the latest Dom Tropen model with what I can offer you, plus all its weapons... it's no problem..." Sharaf starts, but doesn't quite fall for the latter terms of the deal. "But unfortunately, I can only give you 20% of that up front. I only need one or two to do the job. There is no insurance in this business, so I need to get the most I can get..."

With that Sharaf waits for a response. If they decline, then he waits for a next potential one-time employee.
