RPG Voting Poll

And once again, we are at the final stage of choosing the next RPG. In the above poll, you'll find the name of the RPG, as well as who will be the Game Master should it be selected. They will be posted below in the same order they are in the poll.

In the case of Fritz Ashlyn's untitled Alien RPG, should it win this poll, we will then be taking volunteers to be the GM for a few days. If nobody volunteers to be the GM, we will then simply move on to which ever idea came in second place.

As always with this kind of thread, please do not post in here unless you have a question about one of these RPGs. All other posts, such as saying which you voted for, will be deleted.

Finally, as usual, this poll has no set end date. It will likely run for three or four days, but it may last longer depending on how the voting goes. If there is a tie between two of the choices for first place, we will go to a tie breaker thread with those two options.

Good luck!

Re: RPG Voting Poll

This is the first idea in the poll. It was created by Fritz Ashlyn, who has decided he does not want to run the game. Should it be selected, someone will have to volunteer as GM as I mentioned above.

==================================================================

The idea of a permanent installation on the lunar surface seemed reasonable enough to some forward-looking men even as early as the turn of the century - but when a permanent, stable space station was constructed in Earth's orbit in the mid 2120s it was a cause for celebration. Cooperation between UNASA (the United Nations Aeronautics and Space Administration) and several of the world's largest corporations, including the Walton Group and RDS-Chevron, saw the funding and construction of a kilometers-long orbital installation called Heaven. By the 2150s mankind had branched out farther into space, launching from Heaven and Earth to build several self-contained colonies situated in the gravitational Lagrange points and on the moon as well as a science and military installation on the surface of Mars. By 2200 human beings were living on the surface of several planets' moons including Jupiter's Titan with the help of "Habitators", unstable low-output terraforming equipment that allowed for the production of small- to medium-sized installations in close proximity.

Humanity was pleased with itself. On Earth most conflicts had turned into petty, small-scale proxy wars in the remaining 3rd world nations that kept most people content. Overpopulation had been "solved" by regular outbreaks of Influenza and the efforts at space colonization. Then strange and disturbing reports began to trickle in from the outermost human settlements: something completely unknown to humans was spreading, slowly, like a disease, towards the center of the solar system. The first grainy images of the things were unsettling - several still frames recovered from a dead corporate marine's shoulder camera showed an oily black shape dart across the ground and then... nothing. The UN was pressured by its corporate backers to keep the problem a secret; they were rationalized as several unconnected 'incidents' at outer colonies. Accidents with Habitator breakdown, and mass hysteria and outbreaks of violence among colonists were blamed for the losses and they were quietly shuffled out of the public consciousness.

Initially several corporations dispatched their own investigative teams but it soon became clear that the alien life forms, whatever they were, were extremely hostile and could not be reasoned with or safely captured. Described by survivors as large, black masses covered with patches of eyes, the aliens were deadly to anyone that came near an infested area unprepared. Even with heavy equipment several corporate teams were wiped out after landing in infested colonies, and it became clear that 'cleaning' a colony was only a viable option in very rare circumstances. Casualty rates in infested areas was over 90%, even with government assistance. Halting the spread of the aliens seemed like a futile effort at ground level on the effected moons - nuking a site from orbit was the only way to be sure.

Still, the main business sponsors of the infested areas were interested in studying the aliens. Outright extermination of the beings and keeping the incidents quiet was bleeding the corporations of capital and resources, and if a profitable solution could be found it would solve the problem. The UN gave tacit approval for an attempt to study the aliens, and two months later in late 2214 a Walton Group supply ship was 'accidentallly' diverted from an infested area of space to the colonies on Titan. Within a week all contact with the facility and colonists on Titan was lost.

This RPG would begin as a small group of ships are arriving at the moon Titan to investigate the loss of contact with the colony there. In addition to a UNASA vessel with UN soldiers and personnel there would be a couple of smaller corporate ships carrying corporate marines and scientists. The stated goal of the mission is to find out what happened on Titan, as the UN has not officially recognized the alien attacks and the corporations have not made their real intentions public. The corporate teams accompanying the mission should try to collect data and live specimens if possible to determine if any profit can come from the life forms. All players would be humans, so the GM (and possible assistants) would be in charge of controlling the aliens. A possible alternative would be UN/Corp human PCs versus the NPC aliens and ‘infected’ Inhabitor-controlled human PCs. These could be something like monstrosities from System Shock 2 or Dead Space, to shibito from the Siren game series.

The aliens are more or less mindless engines of destruction that are referred to as "Inhabitors". Comparable to the unholy offspring of one of Lovecraft's shoggoths and the Xenomorphs from "Alien", they are large pulsating masses of darkness covered with eyes and tendrils that they can turn into deadly spikes and crude manipulators. They will feed on humans, but that isn't the worst they are capable of - some humans are infected with the aliens' offspring and will behave like what humans would call fast-moving zombies. Infected humans retain some intelligence and in some instances are very smart, but they are all connected to some sort of hive-mind or shared intelligence. Killing one of the infected will also kill the juvenile inside them, but in rare cases it will free the Inhabitor which can then attack on its own. They infest human installations, living in ventilation systems and dark areas until they can build a nest once human resistance is mostly removed.

So what makes this a mecha RPG? The players would be part of 3 or 4 different groups: UN Soldiers/personnel, two different corporate teams, and possibly survivors on Titan. The UN and the corporate marines alike use powered armor comparable to Gears from Heavy Gear or the suits used in the Starship Troopers novel. The suits allow one alert human to take on several Inhabitors at once with relative ease, but there are not enough of them to equip every soldier with one. The rest of the marines are stuck moving on foot with small arms (think Aliens style pulse rifles, etc.), but working in teams they are more than capable of taking on inhabited humans, and with appropriate firepower and skill they can kill Inhabitors though it is extremely dangerous.

I will leave it to the GM to design the powered suits, but it shouldn't be too hard. The UN should have more suits available for their marines, but they are not high quality models like the corporate teams are using - they have weaker weapons and thinner armor. They’re clunky mass-produced models the UN military has been using for over a decade, so they would be slightly outdated though reliable. The corporate teams, representing the Walton Group and RDS-Chevron (or a different corp, up to the GM... perhaps Ultor or Weyland-Yutani? ) will have better powered armor but less of the suits to go around, but at least their marines stuck on the ground will have better personal armor and small arms. The ratio of suits to on foot for the UN and the corps should be something like 70:30 and 40:60 respectively.

Not all PCs have to be combat-oriented. I'd like to see a game like this run with as much suspense and scary situations as gun-emptying, pants-crapping combat. Some of the players should be corporate scientists trying to make sure their own sponsor can get something out of the situation, and there can be civilian survivors on Titan's surface. The humans work together in theory, but things may get nasty depending on how profit-oriented the corporate teams get. In short, think of a big mix of "Aliens" and "Shin Getter Robo Armageddon" with mecha suitable for Heavy Gear or smaller. I'd like to see some behind-the-scenes corporate backstabbing to go with the "GAME OVER, MAN! GAME OVER!" combat going on against the Inhabitors. I don't think it would be too difficult to set up and it could be pretty interesting if done right.

Re: RPG Voting Poll

This is the second idea in the poll, created by Attomoku.

==================================================================

Full Metal Panic!: Red Tides
WILL NEED A CO-GM If it get picked and I cant get one I will turn game rights over to the runner up.

Background:

Full Metal Panic! is set in a parallel world, based upon actual world events around the late 20th century to the early 21st century where the Cold War has yet to end, with nearly all timeline alterations occurring from 1982 onwards. Some of the major differences between real life and the Full Metal Panic! universe are:
- China has split into the People's Liberation Committee (North China) and the Democratic Chinese Alliance (South China) along the Yangtze River with Hong Kong being split much like Berlin. Kowloon is a North Chinese territory, while Hong Kong Island is held by South Chinese forces. Combat in Hong Kong is prohibited by terms of a recent peace treaty.
- A nuclear warhead was used in the 1991 Gulf War. This triggered the Fifth Middle East War.
- Following the beginning of the fifth Middle East war, the Soviet Union successfully reinvaded Afghanistan (called Helmajistan).
- Mikhail Gorbachev was assassinated and the Perestroika was halted.
- Distinct military technology such as Arm Slaves and Black Technology were developed.

Players will RP as soldiers of Mithril, a worldwide military (non-governmental/mercenary) anti-terrorist organization with NATO leanings, possessing advanced technologies and weapon systems superior to that of any national armed forces. The organization's purpose to halt regional conflicts, in addition to securing the Whispered without taking any sides. As such, it is one of the few organizations aware of the Whispered and Black Technology, though most of the rank and file and many of the officers are not actually aware of the existence of the Whispered or their potential.

The Whispered are young individuals (19-20 years old in the course of Red Tide) who have an innate knowledge of advanced math, science, engineering, and physics capable of producing machines and devices beyond the scope of present-day human comprehension. This technology is called Black Technology and as a result of this they are highly valued and sought after by those who would exploit their abilities.
Mithril remains an extremely secretive organization, its existence unknown to all but the most senior of military and political personnel. It is a specialist organization dependent on fast surgical strikes with small numbers. To help accomplish this, Mithril has the latest and greatest mecha to assist operations;
The Armored Mobile Master-Slave System, or "Arm-Slave" (AS) for short, is a humanoid, powered suit about 10-12m in height, that operates via a semi-"master–slave" control system. Mithril is the first to use a 3rd Generation AS, the M9 Gernsback, which utilizes the latest in Black Technology including a near silent palladium reactor, advanced AI, a full electroactive-polymer muscle package system, ECS (Electronic Concealment System, aka- cloaking), and multiple advanced vectronics and Electronic Warfare systems.

Gameplay:

Red Tides will focus on Mithril's North Atlantic fleet in 2001, fighting against various forces that threaten regional stability, as well as protecting the Whispereds and attempt to contain growing terrorist and Soviet threats.
Players will be stationed aboard the 220m Tuatha de Danaan class assault submarine- the TDD-2 "Fomorian" as either members of the Special Response Team (SRT) or the Primary Response Team (PRT). The distinction between the two is that SRT members will be the only ones trained to pilot Arm-slaves and limited in number as a result. When signing up, players will chose if they want to be either SRT or PRT, as well as their preferred weapons set in the field (more on this will be in the sign-up if selected). However, I'm going to limit the number of SRT Personnel to 12, on top of that, since the TTD-2 has limited space, she will have a standard complement of only 8 Arm-slaves. SRT members will have to rotate as necessary to make sure all those who want to pilot one get a chance to do so, and mix it up between ground and mecha combat. (If you sign up multiple characters, initially, only one will be counted as SRT and the others will end ups as PRT, as to give as many people a chance to pilot an AS if they want it.) SRT members will either be grouped into a separate squad or lead PRT teams while on the ground.

Since the Fomorian is basically a submersible aircraft carrier, she also carries four RAH-66 Comanche recon/attack Helicopters, six MH-67 Pave Mare heavy transport helicopters, and four F-35B Lightning II V/STOL fighters as well as her multipurpose vertical missile tube array to deliver missile strikes and the like. Since I will be busy with the opposition, and because it seems unfair to have a stranglehold over tactical assets, I will need a co-GM to be the Fomorian's XO/combat coordinator and control all the support as well as help with the briefings and running's of the game. (I will RP the Captain as a "moral stopgap" to make sure the Co-GM doesn't inadvertently alter the story or overstep their bounds, because while yes, you probably could end most missions with a ballistic missile, it's not very sporting.)

Before a battle, players will attend a briefing of the mission. I/my co-GM will supply a scenario along with Intel in the form of maps and enemy positions/strength estimates as well as a tentative mission plan to outline the objectives. Then players will be able to tweak the mission plan based on what they see, choose and discuss equipment, tactics, and occasionally their team's starting positions depending on the scenario. The enemies will be GM controlled NPCs and me and my forces will do the best to throw curveballs and not all will ever go 100% according to plan. However if you play smart and be a cohesive unit/team you will likely triumph. Good tactics and using the right weapon for the job/weapons hierarchies are expected to be fully utilized, (An artillery AS is highly effective at suppressing snipers and an AS that is equipped with a knife and scaled up SMG will have a better time faring in city-fighting and close quarters than the guy with the artillery AS) If they are not fully utilizing these, my NPC Armies will take note and press to their advantage.

Also, keep in mind that if this gets off the ground I may want someone to RP as a Whispered a bit later on, since it's no fun if the objective doesn't have a will of its own.

I'm aware that this a a departure from the standard PvP style game-play so don't hesitate to ask any questions about the game or how any aspect of it would run.

Re: RPG Voting Poll

This is the third and final poll choice, created by the RPG Trinary.

==================================================================

It is the 20th year of the Future Century - it has been 4 years since the sudden and abrupt end to the last Gundam Fight. Due to unforeseen circumstances the Gundam Fight International Committee was forced to cancel the fight before a victor could be selected. This threw the world into turmoil as there was no clear leader of the earth or the colonies. It didn’t take long for the Gundam Fight
International Committee to step in and take over the responsibility, moving their headquarters to Neo Luxembourg and declaring the small, peaceful nation the "winner" of the suspended fight as an interim government.

Many people in the world cried out in opposition to the GFIC’s sudden perceived takeover, but they were quick to quell any kind of potential rebellion with a mixture of political pressure and strict forced adherence to the system of rules that had been put in place to prevent war. The GFIC had grown to be a huge influence over the colonial governments, and it didn’t take long before the anger
subsided and people accepted the outcome. Allowing Neo Luxembourg (and the GFIC) to run the government for the short period between Gundam Fights was seen as the lesser of two evils, as the alternatives included forcible takeover and the possibility of open warfare.

In the years after the suspended tournament, the people changed the focus of their concerns, demanding new rules and organization to prevent the disruption of another Gundam Fight. In response, the GFIC made alterations to the general articles that controlled the fighters and the participating nations to keep out unwanted and dangerous influences like the rogue Corsair State. The increased
security and streamlined rules seemed to please the general population and the colony governments, so the GFIC moved forward with preparations for the next Gundam Fight. Among the announcements was that Neo Luxembourg would be fielding an official entry as thanks for their cooperation.

The outcome of this Gundam Fight, the first official matches after the disastrous suspended tournament, will determine who controls the United Colonies Federation government. With new rules and more security than ever, the GFIC is preparing to oversee the finals and announce a winner...
