On a turret, what is the name for the sheath of flexible material, which seals off the space between the gun barrel and the edges of the slot?

So frustrating! I can't find the answer anywhere.

You're referring to where the gun barrel comes out of the turret, right? The flexible material's commonly referred to as a gun mantlet cover or shroud.

Ah thanks so much! I've wondered this for years.

How did you find out?

It's Ryujin, man. Dude doesn't "find out", he just knows things.

I just read books. It's how we used to find things out back before there was Googling.

Lawl. I do indeed have books on weapons and U-boats and warships... paid more attention to small arms, though.

Now that you mention books, I really need to own a book about tanks.

In my previous life, I actually had a bunch of those "All the World's X" books, be they about navies or tanks or armies or whatnot. Handy little references, those, full of pictures and plates and released dimensions and specs followed by a page or two of development history. Pretty kickass.
