The Dooben Wolf's Competition

In other threads we have discussed how the Zaku III was most likely developed a lot earlier than originally suspected. If that is indeed the case, it couldn't have been developed at the same time as the Dooben Wolf. Therefore, it couldn't have possibly competed and lost against it. But I have realized that we may have another MS that might fit the bill:

The Geara Doga used in U.C. 0093 and afterwards is said to be a MS developed by a previous Neo Zeon movement, and the only previous Neo Zeon would be Haman's, which doesn't seem to deploy this unit. But what if the Geara Doga was developed late during the conflict and was measured against the Dooben Wolf?

The Geara Doga isn't known for being a high spec unit, but rather a cost-efficient unit, and for whatever reason, the first Neo Zeon seems to have large pockets considering how many new model MS it ends up rolling out and mass producing (most of which have gundarium armor which should significantly increase their cost). Taking this into consideration, along the Dooben Wolf's high performance, it's quite likely that the Geara Doga would have lost against the Dooben Wolf, meaning that the later would be the one that gets to be mass produced, while the losing design would only be mass produced in limited quantities, and most likely with less priority than the winner. That could explain why the design could have been completed, and yet we don't see any units fielded during the First Neo Zeon conflict.

Even if there do were some completed Geara Dogas by U.C. 0088, it seems reasonable that we didn't see them considering that we only saw 6 of the winning design, the Dooben Wolf. Or maybe we could even theorize that some of those hard to identify repainted MS among Glemy's forces are actually Geara Dogas?

All that said, the armor materials of the Geara Doga used by the Second Neo Zeon do indicate that the design had to be modified before it was mass produced by Anaheim. So, even if the First Neo Zeon did roll out some Geara Dogas, these would most likely have different specs from the machines used by Char's forces.

Actually, I think that the Doven Wolf's (I refuse to call it "Dooben Wolf") competition may have been the Zaku III Late Type, as it was the bridge between the Zaku III and the Geara Doga, and the Geara Doga was produced after the war ended.
According to your theory, that is.

Re: The Dooben Wolf's Competition

I must admit I'm not very familiar with Under the Gundam: Double Fake. From what you said, it does sound like a good theory that the AMX-014 competed against the Zaku III Late Type, which allows the regular Zaku III to be developed earlier while still allowing the statement of the "Zaku III" losing against the AMX-014.

However, I checked around regarding the lineage of the Zaku III and Geara Doga. While the wikia profile of the AMX-011C does directly says that it is the missing link between the AMX-011 and the AMS-119, the MS Encyclopedia rather says that:

it became a touchstone for the new Neo Zeon mobile suits as they transitioned to the Doga series.

Touchstone means a criterion or standard by which judgment is made, which in this case most likely refers to a base performance that would be expected of the new MS being produced. Furthermore, the second part would indicate that this criteria/standard was for MS being developed before the Geara Doga series was either completed or adopted, which sounds more like it is referring to new MS that may not necessarily include the Geara Doga itself.

Furthermore, the MS Encyclopedia profile says:

A variation of the AMX-011, which the former Neo Zeon intended to serve as a general-purpose mass production machine during the first Neo Zeon conflict. After the war, it continued to undergo improvements at development bases hidden from the Federation Forces, and a few units of this later type were produced.

This description seems to indicate that AMX-011C is a variant that resulted from the improvements to the basic AMX-011 and that the produced AMX-011C units were manufactured after the war at these hidden bases.

Finally, the profile of the Geara Doga in the defunct Gundamofficial.com site said:

The Geara Doga, Neo Zeon's standard mobile suit, was designed by an earlier Neo Zeon movement a few years earlier and produced by Char's forces with only minor modifications.

This is the fragment that I was looking for last time: it would seem to confirm that the Geara Doga was produced by the previous Neo Zeon (Haman's), and also further indicates that the AMS-119 only received some minor changes from the original design. These would probably include the change to a more economic armor materials, as well as other minor improvements which probably became available due to new technological advances.

Yep. The Japanese term used here, 試金石, literally means "touchstone" in the sense of a comparative standard.
