I don't know if it's a retcon or not, but either way it would serve to help explain the weird Newtype things that Mashymre did.

This theory's actually been floating around for a while. Apparently, it was mentioned in the staff notes published in The Anime magazine while the show was still on the air, and the HG-UC kit manual says that the Zaku III Custom is rumored to have "a terminal with psycommu-like functions, although the details are unclear."
