"Some terrorist whackjob threw a bomb at The Thirsty Dog; everything's on lockdown by the Commander's orders."

Nick didn't freeze up, but the news didn't exactly not visibly affect him either.

"Any word on how many civilian and military casualties, and is there a connection to the AEUG?" he asked, stressing the word 'civilian' as though it had a higher priority.

"I wasn't told much," replied the Staff Sergeant, "Looks like mostly military guys got hit, but I don't have any numbers. Dunno if AEUG had anything to do with it, but considering they hit that bar in particular, I wouldn't be surprised."

Now he stepped back and raised his voice to speak to everyone present: "Listen up, we're evacuating the premises in groups of five. You know the drill; stay calm and this can be quick and smooth. Now let's go."

He singled out a group of five random officers near him as the first group to go, and the process started.

No sooner had Pendragon entered the bar was he ordered not to leave until permitted. Apparently, that explosion was at the other Bar. Sure, he feels sympathy for the men and women who died, but going out there with those colonial riffraff around, one is asking for trouble. Especially when one wears a Titan uniform. Aside from the supposed ‘Earth Elitist,’ the Titans are the alien’s favorite scapegoat for all the woes they face. No, the loss of those soldiers, regardless whether or not it was a mistake to go out there amongst the Trash, is a tragedy. No doubt that terrorist organization, the Anti-Earth Union Group, is responsible.

Switching thought processes, Constantine ponders for a moment about trying to get a drink, but decides not to. With this resent attack, he’ll surely be on patrol or something soon. Best not show up for duty drunk, or even buzzed. He is on the frontlines, after all, or at least what can be defined as the frontline, with this most resent attack.

Next morning...

Most Titan personnel were removed to the garrison, or, in some cases, to their home ship, without incident. No other bombs went off. The only person found in connection to the Thirsty Dog incident was a green-haired, teenage runaway.

- Colonial Harbor -
- Alexandria-class Kirov -
- The Commodore's Office -

"Understood, sir," murmured the Commodore, giving a perfunctory salute as the small screen with Bask's face cut out.

The door into the office slid open, and in walked Trent, who gave a brisk salute.

"We're going to the command center again, Commander," intoned the Commodore, "The briefing for Operation Apollo is to commence. Gather the skippers and mobile suit team leaders."

* * *

- Gryps 1 Titans Main Command Center -
- Large Operation Briefing Room -

The briefing room was huge; more like an auditorium than the small briefing rooms on most warships. It had to be, in order to house so many people. Trent wasn't sure why Bask had ordered not only all ship captains from the six taskforces committed to this operation, but all mobile suit team leaders as well.

The taskforces were arranged in alphabetical order as viewed from the stage. The members of Taskforces Bravo, Charlie, and Delta were all on Trent's right, while Foxtrot, India, and Kilo were to his left.

The stage had a podium from which Bask Om was no doubt intended to speak. The backdrop was a large screen, presently displaying a map of the Earth sphere, including the locations of the Sides and Luna. Gryps, in Side 7, was highlighted green.

Bask Om entered, prompting everyone to stand and salute. He looked out to the audience with that unblinking visage.

"At ease," he ordered dismissively, "We don't have time to waste.

"As you all know, six autonomous raider taskforces have been called together to partake in Operation Apollo. The goal of this operation is to drive AEUG out of Von Braun City, depriving them of a crucial harbor and allowing us greater ease of operations in that sector.

"Right now, our main force, led by Ltcmdr. Jamaican Daninghan in the Alexandria, are en route to attack Von Braun City directly. It’s possible AEUG knows about this operation and will scramble units to protect what is probably their most vital port. You raider taskforces will act as a rearguard and defensive screen while the main force attacks directly."

As he said this, the screen changed to a 3D map of Luna, with areas of its airspace sectioned off. Each sector was labeled with the name of one taskforce.

"Hold on!" shouted a voice from the crowd. It was a blue-haired, gray-eyed Lieutenant Commander wearing a uniform with a personalized cut using a platinum color on the details. He continued, "So we're not hitting the rebels directly? We're letting that pr**k Daninghan take care of that? Come on, we might not even fight anything pulling rearguard!"

"That's enough, Maxamilian," retorted Back evenly, "Daninghan is leading the main force, and that won't change. The raider taskforces will ensure the main force isn't flanked by AEUG reinforcements, and that won't change."

"Man, bulls**t!" howled Maxamilian. He seemed about to go into a tirade, but one of his fellow members from TF Bravo pulled him down and convince him to cut his losses.

"The taskforces are to deploy no later than noon today if they are to reach Luna in time for the operation. After that, it's simple; patrol your sector, and prevent any rebel units from passing through until the all-clear is given, indicating Von Braun City has been reclaimed. Any more questions to waste my time?"

"I have one," came a voice from Taskforce India. A fair-skinned man with hazel hair stood and asked, "Sir, I hear that the Dogosse Gier is assigned to the main attack force, but is not acting as the flagship. Instead, a man from Jupiter commands it."

"I don't see how that's your business, Backmeyer," rumbled Bask, "But yes, the man you speak of, Paptimus Scirocco, is currently in command of the Dogosse Gier, but will take a subordinate role to Ltcmdr. Daninghan. Admiral Jamitov arranged this."

"How can we allow a Jovian upstart command of our most powerful warship!?" came the indignant shout from Commodore Posner.

"I'll remind you, Commodore, that I am your superior officer, so interruptions, even from you, will not be tolerated. Regardless, Scirocco commands the Dogosse Gier. That will not change, and that will be the last I hear on the matter."

Trent had never heard of this man from Jupiter. Apparently he'd been making waves since he pledged loyalty directly to Jamitov not long ago; Trent was out hunting the 4th Escort Squadron at the time. In such short time, he'd already been entrusted with the powerful Dogosse Gier.

"The Jovian isn't even the real problem with the main attack force," came the sudden observation from none other than Commodore Ritter, "Its own commander, Jamaican Daninghan, is a problem. That man is clearly not the best man for the job, and having him handle such an important operation-"

"Remember your place, Commodore," was Bask's icy interruption, "And that is the last we hear about the choice of leadership within the main attack force."

Ritter's action was unexpected, and left Trent momentarily speechless. The Commodore had to have known, as does everyone else, that Jamaican Daninghan was a personal friend to Jamitov and Om, and thus was specially priveliged despite his ineptitude and inordinate arrogance (Trent, too, doubted he was the best man available to handle Operation Apollo). Yet the Commodore quite openly challenged the decision right to Bask's face...

"Question," called out Trent, wanting to change the flow, "I lost Ltjg. Erebus Jones, the lead pilot for one of the warships under my com-"

"A replacement has been assigned, Commander," cut in Bask, "You'll be pleased to learn you have a seasoned veteran of both the war and the Delaz Incident."

"Very well," sighed Trent. Erebus, that poor bastard...

"Question," called out Stukov, "What if Ltcmdr. Daninghan fails to reclaim Von Braun?" The way he said it made it rather clear he had no faith in Jamaican's ability to carry out the job.

"In the unlikely event that happens, you will receive new orders. Follow those. Now, unless we have more useless questions, this briefing will dismiss."

Brown stood from his seat and made his way to the door. H nodded at a couple of pilots he knew. After exiting the room, he headed towards his boat. He stopped at a coffee stand before resuming his walk to the Herakles.

After getting on board, he headed for the suit bay, and saw the rest of his team. He shouted to them from across the bay. "All right, boys and girls, we leave at twelve hundred hours. Help the knuckle draggers get our suits and other geared stowed. Make sure you've signed your life insurance paperwork and your wills are filled out."

"Yes Sir!" all the members of the Herakles said as Lt. Brown breifed them.

Alex with a nervous tone in his voice "Sir will we come in contact with the AEUG, what if their force is larger than ours?!" Alex, although skilled at piloting is still not used to battle. After his question he looked at his fellow pilots, they all had the same questions in their eyes.

True, Ensign Pendragon is also wondering whether or not they’ll face the AEUG, but he lacks any of the nervousness of Ens Lepak. Indeed, he is actually looking forward to it with a look of…anticipation?

No, Alex Lepak has just shown that in this War, he much rather sit upon the side-lines than stand in the front ranks. Constantine is only remorseful for the fact that Lt.Cmdr. Jamaican Daninghan and his group will be the first, and probably only people be able to get their hands on Rebel Hide.

I do wish we get to fight the AEUG, that they are stupid enough to try and flank Lt.Cmdr. Daninghan, but less for my own sake now, and more to see that coward Lepak squirm…

Brown looked at Lepak. "Are you serious? Are you asking, as a Titan Officer, what we do if the enemy has more suits than us? We beat them until they don't have more suits than us. You will stick with your wingman, Lieutenant McMullen and protect him while he takes the shots on the enemy. Pendragon you will do the same. We are in space, not ground, so we will fly and fight like fighters, that means we stick together and cover each other. Split off on your own and you die. Understood?"

"Yes sir, its just this is my first major combat mission since i joined the Titans, i'm sure we'll crush the AEUG, hehehe....um..sir"

The other pilots looked at Alex and then chuckled, except for Pendragon who just gave him a glare. He thought Pendragon might be staring him down as to think the he was insecure. No!, i'll show the other pilots that i can do some damage, i'm not some weakling!!!

Brown just put his face in his hands. Oh, God, what did I do to deserve this? Who did I offend? He looked back up at Lepak.

"Ok, new orders Lepak. Unless you have important information, a good question, or are receiving orders from me, you don't get to talk to me. Now, go over there." He pointed to Lepak's suit. "And make sure your suit is stowed and everything is where it should be."

Pendragon’s affirmative to the Lieutenant’s orders is a brief nod and an “Understood.”

So, if the AEUG do attack, the CO and XO want all the glory?

No, you fool! The CO and XO both have more experience, which would make sense that they are better shots. Plus, they haven’t seen you in any actual fight, yet, so how are they supposed to know whether you can look after yourself? This way, it is not as much as you covering them as them keeping an eye on you. That fool Lepak seems like he’ll definitely need it, but why me? I must be because if anything happens to me, he’s afraid my Father will come down on him like a colony, which is true enough (however much I dislike it), but still. Should he be letting a single ‘IF’ get into the way of his judgments?

Despite the glare he’d let slip towards Lepak, Constantine is composed, his face, a mask of calm, hiding his internal analysis of his new found Commanding Officer.

Shin can't belive a bomb was set off. He is about to ask the Staff Sergeant something else but before he can he tekks everyone that they will be evacuating in groups of five so Shin waits for his turn and wonders what they are gonna be doing now. Later after getting back he begins to wait for orders.

After Ryo had been brought back to the ship he had gone to his quarters and had gotten onto his bed befoe looking up at the ceiling, "So a bomb went off, I would have thought they had better security here but if a bomb went off just like that it seems like it is not as good as I thought." Ryo then gets up and begins to walk around the ship.

"Hmm back on the ship after some random bomb..." Dante said as he layed on his bed. He had been training in the Simulator ever since being put back on the ship, and he was severly bored. Dante stood up and walked toward the mobile suit bay to see if anyone was around.

- Leandro Alvarez's Quarters -

Leandro hadn't shaven. Instead he sat, wearing just his uniform pants and an undershirt, with his forearms on his knees as he stared blankly at the floor. The TV was on, set to a news channel (one known for its pro-Federation bias).

"Authorities are still investigating yesterday's bombing of a popular downtown bar," said the reasonably, but not strikingly, attractive anchorwoman. In the corner, a mugshot of a scruffy green-haired kid appeared. "The only suspect so far is Gedley Shims, believed to be a secret AEUG operative. AEUG, of course, stands for 'Anti-Earth Union Group', a terrorist organization with known ties to pro-Zabi groups.

" We do not have definite numbers, but initial estimates put the death count at almost twenty military personnel killed, and over a dozen civilians killed. We have even less certainty regarding those wounded in the attack. No word yet on property dam-"

Leandro shut off the set. He then leaned back so the crown of his head was against the bulkhead and sighed.

- Main Bridge -

Trent floated into the bridge and clutched the arm of his command chair to pull himself into it. To his surprise, Stukov had been able to get to the bridge first.

"You are getting slow, Commander," stated Stukov matter-of-factly.

"I'll do without the commentary, Aleksandr." He addressed his bridge crew and said, "What's the status of the taskforce? Are we ready to launch?"

"The Kalinin team's being assembled, sir," replied Nakagawa, "The new leader's being moved in and acquainted with his new subordinates, but we should be ready to set out shortly."

"Good... good..." murmured Trent, thumbing through files on new pilots in Echo. The newest addition - the one to replace luckless Erebus - was, as Bask promised, a hardened veteran who'd fought through the OYW and had stayed in hot posts in the years hence, always with approving commendations from his commanding officers. The man, one Ltcmdr. Bate, seemed to be a natural leader of mobile suit pilots. If his record was remotely accurate, he'd do well managing and shaping up the significantly less experienced pilots assigned to him.

"Stukov, go and make sure your team's in order."

"Very well, Commander," conceded Stukov, who slipped out the door.

- Mobile Suit Bay -

Wolf oversaw the installation of a new beam launcher onto his Marasai. Getting back his proper armament was certainly reassuring.

"Making sure the grease monkeys don't mess things up, Wolf?" inquired a voice from behind.

Wolf turned to see that Mercedes was owner to said voice. Alexandra was with her. Mercedes continued, "You haven't changed since we were just children, brother."

"You say that as if you have," retorted Wolf, "Now what brings you here?"

"There isn't much to do on this boat, so we thought we'd come by and see you."

"Get acquainted with your teammates, Mercedes," replied Wolf, "You'll be fighting alongside them in the battles to come. If you get to know them, they'll be more inclined to help you if things go south."

"I do hope you're kidding," replied Mercedes, "I know what I need to know about those two: Commander Stukov is a hardheaded bull of a man obsessed with his job, while Alvarez is just some clueless commoner boy who thinks he has something to prove. I'm not exactly overjoyed about becoming their friends."

"That's hardly the point, Mercedes. You don't have to be their friend. I'd never consider Stukov a friend, but I do know his head is in the right place, and thus I can work with him."

"And what about Lt. Naka?" asked Alexandra teasingly, referring to Wolf's XO.

"I'm surprised a man who fought in almost every major space battle in the war could fight so timidly," frowned Wolf, "I wonder how he survived when he fights like that. Inept fighter or no, I won't just let him die on the battlefield, not while I'm responsible for him."

"Of course not," said Alexandra, who was on the same page in that regard (and remembered, as Wolf no doubt did, that Ed Rigney had been lost under Wolf's command), "But still, maybe you're jumping to conclusions. In the battles you've seen him fight, he was in an antiquated mobile suit. Perhaps he fought the way he did because he knew he couldn't afford to fight boldly in that old thing. Now that he's in a Marasai..."

"I see what you mean, Alexi, and I certainly thought the same thing. A man with such extensive experience, though, could see that even in such an underperforming machine could have made a more worthy contribution to the fight. Take Ltjg. Shin Yamamoto. He, like Naka and I, fought through the war. He was also in a GM II, but he wasted no time in engaging the enemy directly. He knew, intuitively, that even though the enemy had a better machine, he'd still be able to match him. Why Naka was unable to do that is beyond me. Anyone with that level of space combat experience should be able to feel the opponent's aggression through the skin of his mobile suit."

"Feel the opponent's...?" Alexandra and Mercedes were completely in the dark as to what Wolf meant there.

"They don't talk about that in training nowadays?" asked Wolf. When both women shook their heads, he sighed and continued, "Ridiculous. If the instructors knew anything, they wouldn't allow a student to graduate unless he knew about that. You can't be useful on the battlefield in space unless you know how to stop depending solely on your eyes. Every experienced pilot - except maybe Naka - should have that intuition, and every rookie should be geared toward developing their own."

"Then it's no wonder so many newly-inducted Titan pilots have proven ineffective," chimed in a male voice from above. The three looked up to a maintenance walkway to see Stukov leaning over a rail and looking down on them. He continued, "The Federal Forces' training has changed little since the pre-Titan days, unfortunately. New pilots tend to be slaughtered in droves because they're trained under the same notions that guided our ideas of mobile suit combat back when we first started producing suits in large numbers. It only goes to show you how much has stagnated, even under new management."

"Until that changes," muttered Wolf, "New pilots will continue to get slaughtered by the rebels. You saw how they fared in the orbital battles, Aleksandr. Those rookie pilots assigned to the Hades and Kalinin... none of them made it this far. The only rookies who survived that ordeal were those with direct mentorship from real soldiers." He was referring, of course, to Mercedes and Alexandra.

"You preach to the choir, Wolf," replied Stukov, "The way business is conducted in the Titans needs to change, or we might find this war with the rebels will be harder than need be."

"Speaking of, I presume you have something better to do than blast hot air at me, Aleksandr,"

Stukov's broad face bore a grin, though not one of friendship. He parted silently.

"Fine then," said Mercedes, "Alexi and I have soldierly duties to attend to as well, don't we?"

Wolf gave a huff, but was paying more attention to his own work by this point. The two women departed. It was about that time that the Kirov began moving out from the colonial harbor.

* * *

- Colonial Harbor -

From a maintenance walkway, the man wearing the uniform of an EFSF pilot looked on as Taskforce Echo departed Gryps 1.

"Well Ryo, Shin," sighed Gideon Wakune Day after the ships, "You guys made your choice. Whatever your reasons for throwing in your lot with the Titans, I pray you come out all this in one piece. Don't end up like poor Ed, God rest his soul."

He saluted after the Kirov...

... and a short, yet powerful, laugh burst out behind him. He turned to see a man with slightly dark skin and a bony face under an impressive pompadour. He wore a Titan uniform, but he seemed to have some clout as a pilot since it wasn't in the usual black but rather in yellow.

"What exactly are you laughing at, Titan?"

The man in the yellow uniform replied in a harsh voice, one that seemed naturally aggressive no matter who he spoke to, "You and your sentimentality. War's no place for that kind of weakness. I guess you never got a handle on that, seeing you're still with the regulars."

Gideon narrowed his eyes. "I'm not about to waste my time with a thug like you. I'll be on my way."

Gideon walked off, the man clearly unfazed. He could feel the man's mere aura emanating out from him as he stood there, arms brashly akimbo, with a brutal grin. Whoever this yellow-uniformed guy was, Gideon could tell just by being in his presence that he was no run-of-the-mill, two-bit, all-talk thug, but rather someone who could really do damage on a battlefield.

RMS-106 Hizack 'Striker VIII', Herakles Mobile Suit Bay

Brown looked at the control console and then down at the checklist in his hands. He was in his flight suit, and his suit was currently ready to step forward, rise to the deck and launch. He was the first pilot from the Herakles to be on 'ready five.' Ready to launch in less than five minutes. He punched a series of buttons on the screens in the cockpit and called out through the open hatch to his suits crew chief. "Ok, chief, how does it look now?"

The chief was poking around with the actuators in the arm. "Looks good, El-tee." The arm had been sticking the last few times he had used it. Now it seemed they had the problem fixed. Brown shut the arm back down and started to fill out the paperwork about his team's ready status. He had another five hours of being on the ready five, plenty of time to get his paperwork done.

Randal Hicks groused to whoever would listen. He didn't so much care who heard him or what they thought of it, so long as he could vent. This particularly afternoon--or was it morning? Or evening? That was one of the things he so hated about space. You could never tell the time with the stars winking and twinkling at all hours of the day. At any rate...this particular whenever-it-was found him puttering around in the cockpit of his brand new Marasai.

But the stars had little to do with his current litany of complaints.

"Who does this Jupiter bumpkin think he is? He up and joins the Titans and Jamitov forks over our best battleship like it's the company car. Friggin' ridiculous...I been with the Titans since the damn war and they're just NOW forking over a Mare's eye."

Things like proper procedure or correct names meant very little to a man like Randal. All that mattered was the big, red ball of mean he had been newly assigned. The brunt of his career as a Titan had consisted of time spent in a Hizack cockpit. He hated Hizacks. They looked far too much like Zakus for his taste, especially when one considered the source of his trademark scar.

"And that's another thing--why the hell do we use these Zeon wannabes? We're the Fed'ration, damn it! No point in screwing around with Zaku-lites. Gawd...the Fed'ration's gone soft. Next thing you know, we'll be letting the spacies run the Titans."

Nick was also in his cabin, watchthing the news report.

So, the 'mighty' AEUG, the epitome of bravery and courage, strikes again to show the world why they are in fact the saviors of mankind. What a load of crap.

Stretching his legs, he exited his cabin and made his way to the hanger, where he looked up at his Hizack with no small amount of pride.

He pointedly ignored Wolf, but gave a wary glance at that beam launcher.

The last battle taught Nick only how to 'poor' an aim Ritter was.

Glancing around, he noticed the only Hizack custom. Specifically, how it was in disaray other then what the mechanics took care of.

Where the hell is....wazhisname? Leandro?

It was then he remembered that one Erebus Jones was one of the casualties from the AEUG's raid.

Nick was only casually aquainted with either man at best, but when he learned it was someone from his team that was killed, he made it a point to find out as much as he could, and what little he could garner, he was a good friend of Leandro.

Erebus dead, Leandro's suit isn't in tip-top shape, which means he's....moping.

Nick rolled his eyes; now there's a manly way to expel your grief!

Either cry or don't, but stop dragging it out!

Taking a dive out of the hanger, he passed dangerously close to Wolf. He was unable to prevent himself from giving the man a hateful glare.

*********************************************************

It took some looking and even a few embarressing requests for assistance, but he soon found himself standing in front of Leandro's door.

"Lt. JG Leandro Fulgencio Alvarez!" He barked, mentally high-fiving himself for remembering the man's full name, "Open this door before I break it down!"
