Jonas looked around at the flurry of beam shots. The pattern became increasingly clear that this was not the planned simulation.....

"Something....isn't right here. This is supposed to be a beginner level sim....but the AI is clearly......"

"This is Lt. Anderson. Stop the simulation immediately. The AI is clearly set to an advanced level, and this squad isn't up to that level yet at all. I repeat, stop the simulation now!"

"I think that was the intended idea, sir," Julian commented wryly, dodging said beam shots coming at his Nemo in a frenzy, bringing himself above one of the Marasais, countering with a downwards shot, and then gliding further away while barrel-rolling to come to face with a second. "I think the Skipper wanted us to realize that in combat there is no such thing as a beginner's level. Or something along those lines, sir, I really have no clue."

Pan flashed his teeth with a grin at the Captain's comment, and tottally relaxed easing his shoulders, completly at ease. His shadow Chareux was still a little stiff with nervousness.

"Honored to be aboard Cap'n!" Pan spoke quickly. "With the good mix of you an old faces we'll bring the titan's down before brunch!" He said grinning wrapping his arm around Thibault's head and putting him in a head lock.

"Ain't that right? Ensign??"

"Yesssirr..." He managed to say while struggling. Pan quickly released him not wanting to cause a big ruckus on the bridge. He actually immidiatly regreted doing that to the kid his first time meeting the captain, what a bad first impression.

Heyden laughed nervously. "Well....I'm sure you got alot to do and don't need us two rough housing up here!! "

Celeine nodded and grabbed onto Celeste, pulling the other woman in the direction of the mess hall.

She didn't stop until they were outside the doorway, roughly spinning Celeste around and looking her up and down.

"Okay, you look good, and no one will say anything...." With that last bit of worrying she grabbed the other woman by the hand and 'stepped' in, pointedly ignoring the other pilots in a "I'm too good for any of you" kind of way that was obviously more playful then anything else before seating both herself and Celeste at an empty table.
I mean when you spend precious seconds to give an "All Your Nukes Are Belong To Us" speech before you even start the Gundam up, you know you're too overzealous for your own good.~wza

As soon as Celeine is seated, Celeste stands up and polity dismisses herself.

“Sorry, Celeine, could you hold on a moment, I need to attend a meeting. I’ll be back when it’s done.”

It only takes a few short strides (even for her) to get the table where the rest of the Dervish’s pilots are congregating with an apologetic look on her face, unaware that Fritz had just entered not 30 seconds before her.

“Sorry if I’m a bit late. Has anyone seen--”

Before she can finish her sentence, the pilot in question, strolls (yes, it is very much a stroll) through the doorway.

“Hey guys. Am I on time or fashionably late?”

Continuing his leisurely walk, he ‘just-so-happens’ to sit on the opposite side of the table from Celeste. There’s nothing obvious about it and it is pretty simple to explain since the rest of Team 3 is scattered, more-or-less, about the table and his seat is closer to the door.

The simulator cockpits suddenly went pitch black. Caroline screamed.

Dombrowski spoke.

"Very good observation, Lieutenant Anderson... and... Julian, isn't it... You are also correct... Like it or not, we may well find ourselves in a situation like that. We have been pursued by an Alexandria before, and we have fought several Marasais as well. Real combat is not forgiving, not in the slightest."

He brought the tips of his fingers together and hunched over, resting his nose on them (The classic Gendo pose from NGE... I didn't know quite how to describe it in text...).

"You will be running three drills a day for the next month. I will leave the substance of those drills to your Lieutenant Anderson and will not interfere with the simulators' programming. However, at the end of the month, I expect you to be able to complete the program you have just failed. Consider it... a final exam. You are dismissed for now. Rest. You will need your sleep."

Once Jack sat down at the table, Fritz cast a neutral glance in Celeine’s direction before moving his seat forward to speak to the group properly. “This isn’t exactly an official meeting, so feel free to let the questions fly. Not as if any of you are timid anyway. What I brought you all here to discuss is our current mission outlook, and why it changed as soon as we arrived at Von Braun City,”. Clute sucked his teeth and swung his feet off the tabletop. “Great...” he said to himself.

Fritz continued, “As of less than an hour ago, the hunt for 27th Bunch has been postponed. What the AEU–“. “What!?” Michiko interrupted. Fritz pinched the bridge of his nose. He had anticipated this. He cleared his throat and began, “Michiko, while I can appreciate your–“ before getting cut off again.

Michiko slammed her palms down on the table and rose from her seat. Her voice was approaching a shout as she said, “You can appreciate what? You’re an earthnoid, Fritz! You have no idea what this is like!”. She was obviously on the verge of tears again. Fritz quickly rose from his seat and grabbed Michiko by the collar. “What I can appreciate,” he hissed, his face moving closer to hers, “Is what a ******* colony can do when it collides with a celestial body,”. He released her and abruptly sat back down, slicking his hair back again as he waited for her to collect herself.

After a moment she slowly sank back into her seat and folded her arms in silence. Fritz didn’t even dare make eye contact with Greydon or Grunwald for everyone’s good. He waited a moment before he took a breath and continued, “The AEUG has basically told the 4th that we’re now part of the city’s defense unit, along with the Argama and some other forces,”.

Wes raised an eyebrow at their new assignment. This explained why they hadnt been doing anything for the past few days. The AEUG feels that protecting Von Braun was more important than finding a missing colony. Understandable, but for others like Michiko finding the colony was leagues more important.

"So we're gonna just stay around Luna and wait for the Titans to attack Von Braun?" Wes asks, "Sounds kinda like a babysitting job similar to what the 4th had been doing before I got here. I thought we no longer assigned to that stuff?"

Jim tried to keep his expression neutral, but inside he was elated. He hoped whoever was attempting a colony drop succeeded in their efforts. That'd teach the Earth to go starting wars...

"Captain Dombrowski, can I speak with you in private later? I'd like to talk about this...............incident with you alone."

Jonas stepped out of the simulator. His eyes glared at Dombrowski, almost as if Jonas was about to reach through the monitor and throttle him.

Eckardy and the members of the 2nd Team listened to what was going on without comment. It was a comment by Curren from 1st Team that got Eddie to speak.

"So we're gonna just stay around Luna and wait for the Titans to attack Von Braun? Sounds kinda like a babysitting job similar to what the 4th had been doing before I got here. I thought we no longer assigned to that stuff?" The man asked with a raised eyebrow.

Eddie shrugged. "Well, if we lose Von Braun, we're kinda f***ed. It is pretty important."

Greydon leaned foward and rested his elbows on the table. "And I don't think we'll need to worry about that colony yet. There's no major Zeon or rebel groups left that would be stupid enough to try and drop it on Earth." He said, not bothering to hide his disgust at such things. Ian paused and turned to look at Fritz. "Do you guys even know stole the damn thing?"

That comment caused a snort from Grunwald, who crossed his arms arcoss his chest. "How much ya wanna bet it was Titans taking it for their purposes? We all know they'd love to have a second Gryps-like base..." Roy's voice trailed off at the thought of the Titans having another mobile base of that magnitude...

Marvin stood and listened to this in silence, but found himself glancing at Ensign MacAlpin. Something about the mention of the stolen colony made the slightly older pilot seem...happy? It seemed so out of place to Hamilton that he shook his head clear and went back to listening to the conversation.

Markado grinned like the young, naive rookie he was when first Celeste and then Jack entered the room for the briefing. The fire of battle forged powerful bonds and he was just happy seeing them again.

His happiness faded as Michiko rose and began to cry. He didn't feel as much loyalty to the girl as to his own teammates, but that didn't mean he liked to see anyone upset like that.

He kept casting concerned glances at her as the briefing continued. It disturbed him to think of another colony drop happening, especially given that it might happen on his hometown back on Earth. But, he knew that people with more knowledge and experience were in charge of this operation and was ready to follow their orders.

"Any idea when the Titans might attack? Will we look for 27th again afterwards?" he managed to add to the tumult of questions and comments.

"Assuming that we manage to keep Von Braun relatively safe, I'm guessing that 27th would be our next priority. Right Fritz?" Wes asks. For some reason he could feel tensions rising, judging from the awkward silence and pauses in between questions. It was obvious that Michiko was pissed off, but silence from most of the 3rd Team made things seem weird as well.

Fritz listened to everything, tapping his index finger on the table as the questions started coming. He leaned forward when it died down a bit and leaned on the table with his fingers laced together. “The 4th is no longer an escort fleet, but that doesn’t exempt us from defending what is arguably the AEUG’s operational headquarters on the moon. I can tell you that we’re 90% certain the Titans are responsible for whatever has happened to 27th. I don’t have a lot of details about the Titan mobilization; as I understand it we’re not even certain they’re coming to attack Von Braun. There’s an Alexandria-class headed in our direction, and the Dogosse Gier has been sighted accompanying the fleet. I haven’t been told anything, but judging by our still autonomous nature, if and when Von Braun’s defense is over we should be able to return to the hunt for 27th,”.

“Great time for Gates to get us put on combat duty, eh? How nice of us to show up just in time to throw ourselves at the Titan flagship,” Clute groused as he set the empty cake container on the table behind him. Fritz blew out a breath and nodded reluctantly, “We’re the biggest self-contained AEUG fleet in the area. I guess the Argama can’t do everything by herself,”.

Celeste had started to rise to comfort Michiko, but Fritz beat her to the punch. And how he reacts vaguely disturbs her. She has not spent a lot of time with the man, but he does seen to have a rather short temper and is quick to get physical. The ambiguous glance towards Celeine is not missed, either.

“You know, tactically speaking, Von Braun and Grenada are the two most important cities on Luna. Control either, and you effectively gain control of either side of the Moon. Now, the Titans must know that we currently have control of Luna. If they wished to deal us a serious blow, it’d be here. But just in case I’m wrong, Lt. Cmdr. Ashlyn, do you know what are forces look like in Grenada?”

Of course, put in the wrong tone, her question could seem like a superior asking a junior officer for information, but the way she says it (hopefully) makes it clear that she is asking Fritz, someone who she both acknowledges as her leader and as someone who knows a whole lot more than her.

Dombrowski came to visit Lieutenant Anderson in his office after the exercise. As he entered, he pinned Jonas with his most withering glare.

"I take it you don't like my training methods, Lieutenant? This is war, there's no room for softness here. Someone's got to put the fear of God in the men, and it's better for us to hammer their mortality home in training than for the enemy to teach them about it in battle. I had hoped you would see things from my perspective, Lieutenant. Your men are green. They need to learn a bit of healthy fear, and they need to learn it quickly. It's the only thing that stands a chance of keeping them alive."

Jonas stood up and glared furiously at Dombrowski.

"Instill fear in my men?? You ever stop to think that by doing so, you may make things WORSE for us? I've seen what fear can do to others.....I lost some good friends by being trained under YOUR method of thinking. You want to set a good example of what a proper pilot should do? Then, get in one of those Nemos and protect this ship yourself!! Talk to me after you've experienced ACTUAL combat. All you do is sit in a comfy chair and bark out orders to everyone. You don't have to do s**t in battle except yell and boss people around. When you've been in my shoes for more than 5 minutes, come talk to me about training methods. Until then, never pull that crap again without my authorization! Now, leave this office and go back to your pedestal on the bridge....."

Dombrowski met Anderson's glare without flinching.

"May I remind you who is in command here, Lieutenant? Hate me if you must, but you will follow my orders. From here on out I will be giving you as close to free rein as I can in your team's operations, but I had to make sure that someone started them off on the right path."

He turned to leave, but snapped one last comment over his shoulder as he exited.

"A fearless man quickly becomes a dead man."

"With us and the Argama we should be able to take on even the Titan's flagship, right?" Markado chimed in. His voice held a tenuous hope and he looked around at his superior officers for confirmation.

Celeste's observations about the moon sent a chill up his spine. The AEUG were essentially a guerilla outfit and they depended on being able to hide when necessary. The Titans could seriously reduce their hiding places in one fell swoop. Like a hare being hunted by a hawk, the last thing the AEUG could do was allow itself to be forced completely into the open.

Vantz climbed out of the simulator and wiped his hands on his pants. He took some deep breaths, trying to calm himself down. If that had been real...

Vantz knew that at the rate he was going, he'd be the first to go in a real fight. Clenching his fists and gritting his teeth, he decided that he was going to get better and better, until he could survive a real battle.
