Jason steps in holding an icy-pack on his swollen chin. Exhausted after having been rounded up in one of several fire teams to combat the flames through out the ship. His curiosity has caught the better of him. Rather than rest he wanted to see who came back, especially to see how those new suits fared. Jason was not worried about his own team as they were rear guard this time around but he did have concern over a certain pilot. He almost whistled on his way over to the Delta section of the Hanger.

OOC: As with the AEUG thread, I plan to do a fast-forward partway through this RP. If you want to take any actions that occur before the fast-forward, please clarify that it does.

- Alexandria-class Kirov -
- Combat Bridge -

The rebel ships were in full retreat. Andrewson Trent, at the sight of a pursuit, clenched his fingers around the armrests.

"Recall all mobile suits and increase speed." He'd tail this prey to the ends of the Earth.

Unless...

A final parting shot from the enemy's Dervish-class battleship nailed an aft segment rather cleanly when the Kirov zigged when it should've zagged. A shudder more violent than that from any other hit sustained made its way through the vessel as the main cannon's beam tore through several decks and vaporized half a dozen crewmen. More were critically wounded in secondary explosions when the starboard thruster suffered heavy damage.

On the bridge, Sergei Trochinski's console filled with urgent damage reports. "That hull breach resulted in a 60% loss of power in our starboard engine, sir. Decks 23 through 30 are reporting dead, wounded, and fires."

Trent gritted his teeth. A 60% loss in power would make pursuit unfeasible, and furthermore couldn't plausibly be repaired in time before the enemy was well out of range. This AEUG unit had made a successful escape thanks to a lucky cannon shot. "Evacuate what crew we can. Divert our mechanical crews to the starboard engines."

- Beta Team Ready Room -

Wolf Ritter zipped up his tunic, then shut his locker. Upon landing, he'd learned of Ryo Naka's death. The man had been an ignorant outsider to the grander workings of the world around him, but he'd been a loyal soldier with extensive combat experience. Wolf had long since seen enough war and loss that the news of the Lieutenant's death had been only a brief ripple in his conscience. Even then, most of what he felt was self-admonishment for being careless enough to lose a subordinate.

The fact that Fritz Ashlyn had been among the enemy was strong evidence that Echo had faced the same AEUG unit they'd fought in the Hatte shoals over a month ago, on Luna during Operation Apollo, and a number of times previously. That the same two opposing fleets could meet multiple times was thanks to the nature of the current conflict, as compared to the war they'd fought against Zeon seven years ago. This war had turned into a game of small, independently-operating units hunting each other down around the Earth sphere, exceptions such as Operation Apollo and the AEUG's coordinated attack on Jaburo months before notwithstanding. Whereas the sprawling, massive scale of the so-called One Year War had made it highly unlikely that two units could battle it out and ever face off again, this conflict was making such scenarios approach the realm of being a norm.

Was Taskforce Echo thus fated to a never-ending cat-and-mouse with AEUG's 4th Squadron? Wolf, for one, couldn't see such small change as the workings of fate, and wrote it off as the macabre coincidence of war. In the end, it meant he'd had multiple chances to eliminate someone who'd betrayed his family, and all opportunities had been missed.

While he knew, objectively, that it shouldn't matter whether Fritz died by his own hand or was killed by some other means, nobody could overcome the desire to bring down, personally, the man who'd killed his sister, especially since Fritz had obviously targeted her because she was his sister. But with Alexandra carted off to another unit - clearly a political move engineered to weaken the Ritters' influence within the Titans - the last mistake Wolf could afford to make was to let anything get to his head.

- Combat Bridge -

Wolf had seen the extensive damage to the main bridge and knew that it wouldn't be usable without extensive repairs. The Kirov would have to do with the combat bridge as a stand-in. He entered and noticed first that his father the Commodore was not present.

~ October 17, UC 0087
- Luna -
- Ayers City -

The damage to the Kirov's starboard engine had proven too extensive to completely repair without more extensive facilities. The cannon had bitten deeply, and the aftermath would take weeks to bring back into acceptable shape. In light of that, Echo had had to limp onward to Luna, where three days after the fight near L2 they had clearance to land and resupply at Ayers City.

After landing and docking the ships in Ayers' more extensive facilities, ground crew from the city worked with ship personnel to evaluate the damage. The consensus was that the damage would take at least a month to repair, especially since the Kirov's main bridge would have to be rebuilt entirely, and most of the starboard engine would have to be replaced. On top of that, some parts would have to be shipped in from Konpei and Gryps, and there was no guarantee the city would be granted the parts needed to repair the new Barzam units.

With Echo inevitably mired in Ayers for so long, Trent granted a month of leave to the mobile suit pilots, in addition to much of the other personnel.

Gilliarme Lasalle felt as if he had woken from a trance when his Barzam touched back down onto the Kirov's deck, and the jolting of the Mobile Suit onto the flight deck was sudden, as if waking Gilliarme up from a particularly confusing dream. It certainly felt like a dream, the harmony he shared with Samantha and Shin, coordinating their attacks, watching each other's backs without even needing to say a single word --- Gilliarme sighed. It was euphoria, the sense of comraderie, especially on the battlefield, a battlefield where mostly it had been every man for himself --- Wolf with his own grudge for Fritz, Nick with his own vengeance agenda, Stukov with his own bloodlust, Trent with his own cautions.

His own, his own, his own, his own. Everyone to each his own --- except Delta Team. Gilliarme was proud to say that Delta Team, out there, had been the most selfless of them all.

But that feeling, like morning, was fading fast.

And as Gilliarme climbed out of the cockpit and finally allowed himself to register his surroundings, back to reality, back to the intrigues surrounding the Kirov and the Titans' special brand of politics, the feeling, a mixture of adrenaline and omniscience...was gone entirely. And the pain which Gilliarme Lasalle, for Shin and Samantha, for Ellen, had ignored up until now would not be denied no longer. As soon as Gilliarme's feet touched down, his entire left side suddenly felt like it was stabbed, causing Gilliarme to stagger forward, wincing; The second step brought the pain anew, causing Gilliarme to stop and look down.

That Nemo from the Salamis Kai. He shot me. He shot at Samantha, and I had blocked it...causing this. The entire left waist of Gilliarme Lasalle's normal suit, with two holes --- one in front, clean out the back --- was now welling blood where a well-placed piece of shrapnel had gone when Julian's Beam Rifle shot took chunks out of his Barzam. And yet, Gilliarme could formulate no words, find nothing appropriate that would describe this situation. He must not fall, not in front of Sam and Shin.

But it was out of Gilliarme's hands. Finally, his mind found an appropriate thing to say.

"...Hmmph."

Then Gilliarme Lasalle toppled forward and lost consciousness.

Somewhat Earlier

Approaching the Delta team section, Jason tossed aside the icy-pack.

Mustn't appear to be to much of a wuss.

With almost a goofy grin Jason peered over the railing looking down at Delta section. First noticing the Barzam unit that had landed then catching sight of an officer exiting the mobile suit. Jason was about ask how things went when suddenly the pilot seemed to keel over.

hmm, I don't see that happen everyday..

Scratching his head, Jason quietly ponders for a minute on what to do in this situation.

"Ahh.."

Not really wanting to get in another mess Jason does an about face toward a nearby door. But before fully leaving the hanger his hand hits an alarm button next to the door. Hopefully the sirens will bring someone and they'll discover the fallen comrade.

...besides I got orders to meet Lt. Tariq about something..

According to evidence from Wolf's and Nick's reports on the action near L2, the idea that Taskforce Echo had clashed with Carl Abbey's 4th Squadron served to grind Trent's gears anew. Abbey, that tenacious AEUG commander, had matched him yet again and lived to tell about it. Trent was by no means a bloodthirsty man, but he certainly couldn't escape the feeling that fate mocked him.

He met with Echo's other ship commanders in an enclosed walkway above the maintenance berths. Marshall Nguyen, formerly Trent's XO, now inheritor of the Kalinin; Isaac Berg, jr., captain of the Herakles; Edwin Winter, goateed skipper of the Buxoro; and the brawny, red-haired Ronald Sullivan of the Ipswich. The four men saluted their commander.

The hatch at the side of the room slid open with a loud whine. Trent, thanks to reviewing his information while approaching the city, recognized the man who stepped in as Kaiser Pinefield, the mayor of Ayers City.

The older man strode purposefully to Trent and grasped his hand in a firm shake. "Commander Trent," he said, "Welcome to Ayers City. We're always honored to help your kind in any way we can."

"Obliged, Mayor Pinefield. Your harbor crews have already given us estimates."

"Good, then they're doing their job. How exactly did your taskforce suffer so much damage?"

"An AEUG fleet outside L2. We did at least as much damage to them as they did us, but that doesn't pardon my failure to defeat them when we had the advantage."

"What matters is that you aren't making excuses, like all too many in the armed forces these days. Have you heard the news about Axis?"

"We received the news shortly after landing."

"These are desperate times, when we resort to forging an alliance with Zabiists to fight anarchic elements within our nation."

"My concern, Mayor Pinefield, is whether or not Admiral Jamitov has considered his priorities carefully enough.

"There must be a reason," chimed in Berg, "Perhaps he's playing some intrigue and hopes to play the AEUG and the Zeons off each other."

"I'm not so sure Zeon can be fooled so easily." Kaiser Pinefield took the words right out of Trent's mouth. "We can certainly hope they can, but I have my doubts. I can only presume this move is part of Jamitov's long-range plans.

"We'll have to see where it goes," said Trent, "It's no doubt safe to say that the Zeons won't sacrifice much for our sake. Jamitov must have forged an alliance to keep them quiet, if only temporarily. Even in that light, though, we're still trusting them too much."

"We need to keep an eye on those Zeons," added Nguyen, "I'd rather we hunt them down first, but it looks like that won't be an option for the time being. We can only hope Admiral Jamitov knows what he's doing, playing with this kind of fire."

For now, Commodore Wolf Ritter XXIV's death in the encounter at Side 2 was still under investigation. Lt. Tariq Sayed, however, wasn't dumb enough to assume enemy fire had inflicted that bridge damage.

He'd spoken to one of the Kirov pilots a number of times since the incident, and soon enough he figured he'd have a case built up.

Grace opens her cockpit and lets out a sigh, more of exhaustion than anything else. This battle was less productive, in terms of kills, then her first and only other, but that is something she can live with. Taking out 4 traitorous pilots while losing dozens of friends and shipmates is not what she would call equivalent exchange. Not by a long shot.

So what if she failed to take out of the AEUGs top-of-the-time suits? She may be close to Ace and a Jay-Gee, but she is still technically a rookie. There will come a time when she will be able to avenge all those lost that day, but she can wait until she has the skill to do it. At least is appears as if all the pilots have returned saf-

One of the pilots of the strange blue mobile suits collapses.

This can’t be happening. There is no way this is real.

---
Flashback aboard the San Diego, after the battle with two ships confirmed as defectors.

The Commander’s Hizack is a wreck, but he’s alive, that’s all that counts.

“1. 2. 3. HEAVE!”

As one, all of the mechanics and technicians who are not busy trying to maintain hull pressure in the hanger, and Ens. Grace Kelborn herself, pull on the three massive improvised pry bars.

The hatch leading to the cockpit groans in protest, but opens slightly.

“All together now! 1. 2. 3. HEAVE!”

The cockpit wrenches open. Three technicians with aide training and a medic who has been waiting impatiently of to the side for this movement rush towards the cockpit. So does Grace. There’s got to be something she can do to help. She peers into the cockpit.

There’s so much blood!
---
In the Kirov's Hanger, post-battle

Nobody seems to have noticed that a man has just collapsed in the hanger. Grace launches herself towards her unknown fallen comrade.

It seems that someone did notice the pilot’s plight as an alarm begins to sound.

Cara Shiranui disembarked from the Herakles in a daze, the contrast between inside and outside, as objectively spartan as both were, felt subjectively like night and day.

They had a month of leave. Problem was that, even with her inflated Titan salary, Cara wouldn't have enough money on hand to visit Earth. She immediately thought about what she'd do on this Lunar City while on leave for so long, unconsciously thinking of how she'd keep a distance from her shipmates the entire time.

- Alexandria-class Kirov -
- Corridors -

Lunar gravity, though far weaker than that experienced on Earth, was enough to allow a man to walk on the ship decks rather than float down them. Somehow, Leandro Fulgencio Alvarez had found himself too acclimated to zero-G space to be comfortable with gravity anymore. Or perhaps he was exaggerating it, and he just needed some time to slip back into life with gravity.

In any case, they were back in a city, and from what Leandro had heard, Ayers was overwhelmingly friendly to Federal servicemen, especially Titans. Not even Gryps could boast that. There was no way he'd waste such generous leave time without taking in a city so peculiar, considering its location.

Ah, but taking in the culture would be no fun alone. Leandro made his way for the shuttle bay to see if he could perhaps catch Ltjg. Kelborn before she disembarked.

- Salamis Kai-class Buxoro -

Picard "M-Hover" Kamek scratched his chin while the technicians made final checks on his Hizack.

"Good, good." He nodded when the workmen confirmd his Hizack was in top shape. "In that case, I'm heading to the city.

"Gonna test out the Lunarian women?" A young voice from among the mechanical staff.

"You wish, kid. Get back to work. Make sure the rookie doesn't come in here crying his eyes out."

-Kyle-

Unlike Cara Kyle had no intention of wasting his extra time... He had failed to defeat that psycho pilot from the AEUG and it ate at him on the insides. He needed to get better and he needed to prove that he was worthy of his position on this ship. The Herakles was his home for now and he planned to use this month to train.

In order to stay on the ship though Kyle had signed up for extra shifts during this stay. He wanted to appear to be a workaholic because that proved his dedication to this ship and its mobile suit team. As the Team leader he expected more out of himself than the rest of them and this meant going beyond what he was just asked to do. Besides his extra money had been sent home to his family so he didn't have much besides what he could just live on. Yeah he was a boring person but he didn't mind because he didn't have much of a life anyways.

And to start his quote on quote "vacation" he began to review combat data from their last encounter with the AEUG. His team had been held up by only two Nemos... That was unacceptable and an embarrassment. He leaned back in his chair as he continued to watch data extracted from their Hizack's visual sensors.[/i]

Nick felt like whistling.

Okay, not really, but he felt really damn good. His suit was brought in without significant damage (for once), Trent was finally free of that nimcompoop hanging around his shoulders, said nimcompoop was deceased in a firey and hopefully oh-so-painful death and was now quite the opposite of peacefully burning in hell, Ritter would be thrown off balance...oh yes, most importantly, Nick Te'litha got away Scot free.

Of course, when the head investigator was Lt. Tariq Sayed, that wasn't exactly a huge compliment to his investigative skills.

Actually, the more he thought about it, the more it looked like his slightly-less-retarded subordinate, Jason, had been...avoiding him. Nick's happy mood was rapidly disapearing as his paranoia started putting together a puzzle he admittedly had no pieces for, merely theory and conjecture.

Nick shook his head rapidly. Now he KNEW he was crazy. The very idea of Jason growing a set of testicles and standing up to him...insane.

Still, better safe than sorry. Commander Ritter had an accident...why not Sayed?

Plotting would have to come later. Time to find Ritter Jr. and...gloat.

Kirov Infirmary

Gilliarme's eyes opened after what seemed to be an infinitely long wait to find himself back in the same situation as before, staring at the exact same ceiling. He was back---he was injured and someone carried him here. Gilliarme would've walked there by himself, but he had no recollection; Gill blinked as his mind reeled. He must've lost consciousness somewhere in between, but then who brought him here?

At least he was still alive for now.

It no longer hurt nearly as much as Gilliarme forced himself to sit up and refocus, looking around the infirmary. So many wounded from the previous battle and yet, the 4th still survived. Gilliarme sighed; The intrigues returned. These men didn't, but perhaps Echo as a whole deserved it for being a paragon of the Titans political spiral. And maybe Gill deserved it for, at one time, being a part of it.

Wordlessly and just glad to be alive --- for now --- Gilliarme bit his lip and continued staring for someone, anyone he recognized. Maybe he or she could shed some light on what happened to him.

As Jason hoisted a duffel bag, he left the Kirov with a spring in his step and a ticket in his back pocket. While walking toward the shuttle stop he wondered about the past events and the possible future that awaited him when he returned.

..shame it's a ticket for one, wonder where sh... Hell, can't pass up a free ticket to Earth. Hmm, how come it feels like I sold my soul to the devil. Tariq...what are you up to? Token of appreciation my butt..most of the time you had me sit in an empty room for hours...I smell set-...can't be. He promised that..

Arriving at the stop, Jason drops the bag and waits for the transport to arrive. Oblivious to this surroundings, his only thought centers around his C.O.

..funny. This whole time and I'm betting there's only about 5 minutes of conversation between us. Well, don't care much for an officer who ignores their subordinates..Still he's from Earth and I would've like to talk to him..at least let him know what's going to -NO, he made his choice long ago. Can't help a man who..

As the transport arrives, Jason loses his train of thought and grabs his duffel bag and prepares to board the transport.

..wonder if it's changed much. Small hick town. I can go anywhere I want...so why the desire to go there? ... Ah. Him. wouldn't amount to anything, you said. Well look at me now. Climbing the ranks by stepping on my own people...wouldn't you be proud...damn you.

Sven’s Marasai touched down with little fanfare. He had been concentrating so hard on landing with so little fuel he completely missed the damage to the bridge, By the time he had maneuvered it to his berth and exited the cockpit it was crawling with engineers. Exiting the cockpit Sven stood atop the suite to examine the damage first hand. Frankly, Sven was amazed that he had even made it out alive, judging from some of the engineers reactions to the damage enacted on his suite Sven doubted he would make it past the night. Kicking off from his suite Sven floated towards the walkway, Wolf’s Marasai had docked before Sven, and Wolf was noticeably absent.

Taking the corridor towards the ready room Sven removed his helmet and floated towards Beta team’s room. He knew that his performance had been abysmal at best, the few things he had done right had not outweighed those that he did wrong. Down the corridor approaching Sven a team of security personal whispered in muttered tones. Maneuvering so as not to collide with some of the onboard security personal Sven stopped cold. The men might have been whispering, but Sven caught one phrase the caused his body to freeze up.

The Commodore..? No.. not possible.

Perhaps it was deliberate that her seat was positioned just perfectly out of Gilliarme's field of vision. Samantha Fulton sat with her legs crossed, arms folded loosely, and upright enough that it wasn't immediately apparent she was asleep unless inspected up close.

Sam was awakened by her watch alarm going off. She'd signed up for a few duty shifts in spite of the long leave, and the beeping informed her that her next shift started in half an hour.

Sam stood and sighed, having been asleep for nearly an hour. She tugged at the end of her tunic to straighten it out, then ran a hand through her hair and, in so doing, noticed that Gilliarme was awake and looking about. With a jolt, Sam straightened herself into a rigid attention posture.

"Sir," she intoned.

Shin Yamamoto stepped away from the door, took a gripper and, for the first time in years, couldn't help but smirk.

Wolf Ritter slid along on a bulkhead gripper when he noticed Nick Te'litha turning a corner just up ahead. Wolf raised his free left arm... in a signal of greeting.

"Nick," he said with a faint cordiality, "I read the report on your defensive maneuvers against four Rick Dias units and their supporting Nemos. Your joint tactics with Ltcmdr. Stukov were impressive, to say the least."

There was absolutely no venom, sarcasm, or antagonism in Wolf's words.

Ltcmdr. Isaac Berg, jr., planned to retire to the city after overseeing one last shift aboard his vessel when he learned that one of his pilots, at least, had volunteered for work shifts rather than taking a vacation.

Impressive. It seemed the Admiral's instincts were dead on, giving Berg renewed faith in the man's controversial decision to forge an alliance with the Axis Zeons. Regardless, there was much need for improvement before he could be moved to the next stage.

Perhaps it would pay to take a closer look at the man on whom so much trust had been placed.

- Mobile Suit Bay -

Berg entered to find Kyle Roberts reviewing combat data.

"Ltjg. Roberts." The command was given flatly, evincing no hint of what Berg was looking for.

-Herakles Hangar-

He had been studying the previous battle and jotting down notes on what he saw. His interest was in how ineffective every surprise attempt had been in defeating a Nemo... Were their MS that ineffective against the AEUG's models? Cause that had all be ridiculous and embarrassing. His first time out and all they could accomplish was to hold off two enemy Nemos... And where had Pendragon been that entire time. He hadn't shown up in the battle at all and left all the work on the other three. That in itself irritated Kyle because the man had thrown such a fit over lossing command of the team and during a battle refused to do anything.

But before Kyle could say something outloud he found that he wasn't alone anymore. Someone came down to where he was and called him out... Quickly he turned around wondering who it was wanting him and noticed the Ltcmdr behind him. Hopping to his feet he gave a salute.

"Yes sir, what can I do for you?" He asked curious as to what the cmdr needed him for.

"I can see you're poring over combat data. I'm interested in seeing what our busy MS team leader's looking for."

"I'm trying to figure out where we went wrong." He gave a sigh as he leaned his head back over the top of the chair. The screen shot was paused showing one mobile suit missing from the group...

"Two Nemo's held us up and Pendragon never showed his face during the battle. The performance of this squad was awful." Kyle was obviously angry over the whole thing was well as disappointed. He looked over the Hizacks behind them with a sigh.

Berg took off his service cap and placed it on one of the tables. A luxury of being in a place with gravity, even weak Lunar gravity, was that one no longer had to worry about such odds and ends floating about. He then leaned over to take a closer look at the various data splayed out in front of Kyle.

What Roberts said rang true, as Berg recalled from the reports. Especially memorable was that all pilots from Herakles Team reported one of the Nemos as having executed bizarre maneuvers. It was hard enough to adequately describe how that Nemo moved; believing that it fought effectively in the process was harder still.

Regardless, even with the known deficiencies of the Hizack compared to its Nemo rival, it was unacceptable that Herakles Team had been blocked by such a small number. It was true that the team had also suffered no casualties, but when it had come at the cost of such humiliation...

"It's bad enough the Earth government won't approve enough funding for us to arm all Hizacks with beam rifles, but these 120mm machine guns struggle to pierce Nemo armor. Until the bureaucrats come to their senses, we'll have to compensate for the Hizack's technological disadvantage with better coordination.

"I've seen some of the highlights of the recordings, Lieutenant. You pulled some inventive tactics when faced with an unorthodox opponent, and that allowed you to overcome the limits of your machine to outdo the enemy. If you can translate that tactical flexibility to your overall team command, you can turn Herakles Team into a force greater than the sum of its parts. The question is how one transforms a team of four separate minds into a united fighting force."

"Thank you sir I was trying my best." He was actually tickled by the thought that the man in charge gave him a compliment. That was probably the first time someone on this ship had congratulated him for anything and it felt rather good. Especially with all the trouble he had been through this entire time with the others.

"Sir I would like to correct you in the fact that we did have one beam rifle on the ship and I was using it. I did manage to bring it back though in one piece since it is valuable. I'm sorry if I somehow deceived you into thinking I stopped my opponent with the 120mm because I didn't." He had to add that just to make sure the facts were correct and he didn't receive praise for something he didn't do. Then the idea of four working as one came around and it bugged him a bit.

"Sir during that last battle it was only three. Pendragon never made an appearance I can't tell you where he went or what he was doing since I lost track of him. Cara performed well for her first sortie and her partner Alex seemed to have trouble keeping up with the enemy and wasted plenty of shots shooting into space. I'm not sure what happened there since I haven't been able to talk with him. Neither Alex nor Pendragon have shown themselves since the battle and I'm not sure if their even on the ship now. Its like they disappeared on me." Kyle was worried about this team cause it seemed his presences had confused everything. Was he the X factor ruining this squad? He felt as if he was due to the way everyone acted around him. Maybe it would have been better if he had stayed with the EFSF piloting a GM... At least there he didn't step on people's feet and piss them off.
