I know, which is why the general concept would be the same but the date would be kicked forward a few years.

As funny as that would be, I have a very hard time believing in any biological organism that could survive in space.

considering nearly every alien in Macross has demonstrated that ability at some point, even Zentradi to a degree, I hardly see why not...

Alright fellas, prepare for wordswordswordsWORDS. This RP I've thought up is more of a general crossover type of deal, so one isn't just limited to Gundams or Valkyries or Zoids. OC is fine, within reason.

I've even got the basic plot outlined, but nothing really beyond that. It's not so much "WAR IS HELL" as most Gundam shows are known for, think of it as Gundam X mixed with Zoids, Eureka 7, and a little bit of Fist of the North Star all tossed into a post apocalyptic setting, where everyone's just trying to survive, and we got a mysterious evil organization operating in the background.

And no, the story will NOT migrate into space. Shifting settings like that tends to complicate things, don'cha think so?

Spoiler: show
Story
---
Several thousands of years ago, This planet was a different place than what it is now. There were once grassy plains that spanned for miles, and lush forests of all kinds could be found across the land... However, as humanity progressed, these grasslands were paved over, and the forests were cut down. Man would progress... At the cost of forever changing their homeland.

With progress came conflict, and that conflict would often erupt into war, which further disfigured this world. Eventually, the world had become so scarred that most of humanity had abandoned it, choosing to migrate to the stars above. With the departure of humanity from the planet's surface, it would slowly begin to heal. But war still existed, even in space. At first, the conflicts remained only in the stars, but eventually, the war expanded to the planet's surface once again.

This war, dubbed the "Cataclysm" by historians, had gotten so terribly violent, that those in space decided to bomb the planet with their own homes, their "colonies", if you will. Hundreds of metallic cylinders, each carrying millions of people, impacted upon the planet's surface, killing both those within the colony, and those that had the misfortune of being the target of these monolithic carriers of destruction.

When the dust settled, the planet was irrevocably changed. Massive craters created holes where entire cities once stood, altering the shape of the continents as well. The world had become a desolate, barren wasteland, with a mere fraction of it's billions of inhabitants having survived. Thus, they began to rebuild...

It is the year Post Cataclysm 0389. Hundreds of years had passed, and the Cataclysm was nothing more than a memory. New cities were built from old ruins, and the lands that weren't bound by any laws were overrun with thieves, bandits, and all manner of criminal.

However, the past was not forgotten, as an archaeological dig unearthed a relic of a bygone age; The Machina Militaris, or the Mechanical Soldier. With this discovery, humanity would once again fall to the temptation of conflict again. Several more Mechanical Soldiers were unearthed, each of them were unique; no two machines were the same. Some had two eyes, some only one, there were those that resembled a humanoid shape, or those that stood on all fours, similar to an animal.

It is unknown how, but one day, the Machine Soldiers would find their way into the possession of the many bandits that roamed the planet's surface. No one knows how, but rumors have surfaced of a mysterious shadow organization manipulating these events from behind the scenes. No one knows their objective, the only thing that was known about them was their name, "Umbra".

What is Umbra after? What does it have to do with the Machina Militaris? What will this mean for the world and it's inhabitants?

Words to remember
---
<Post Cataclysm calendar>
Often shortened to "P.C", the Post Cataclysm calendar was formally adopted by the world approximately twenty years after the said event had transpired.

<Machina Militaris>
Relics of a bygone age, the Machina Militaris, or Machine Soldiers, are powerful war machines used by humans in the years that had led to the cataclysm. In the lawless wastelands of this planet, those with Machine Soldiers were people to be feared, or respected, sometimes, even both. Ever since their discovery, and re-integration into society, weapons and spare parts were made for these machines, due to several businessmen having seen the potential for profit from the Machine Soldiers.

Some Machina Militaris have shown signs of sentience. This phenomenon is most prominent in Bestial type Machina, though there are a few Humanoid Machina that exhibit similar traits.

<Humanoid>
A specific type of Machine Soldier, Humanoids refer to the Machina Militaris that have adopted a humanoid shape, usually sporting two legs used for travel, and two arms, which are used to carry weapons made specifically for Machine Soldiers. Though most are ground bound, there are those that are equipped with boosters, allowing for rocket-assisted jumps, or in some cases, giving them the ability to hover above the ground, or even the water. Even rarer than that are those that have the ability of sustained flight, something that normally certain Bestial type Machina are capable of.

<Bestial>
Another type of Machine Soldier, Bestials refer to the Machina Militaris that resemble animals. These Machine Soldiers boast the most variety in shape, size, and function. Some Bestials resemble four-legged creatures, such as lion, wolves, or some lizards. Others walk on two legs like Humanoids, but are fundamentally different. These kinds are usually Apelike Bestials, or Bestials that resemble predatorial dinosaurs. There are also those that move by either wheel, track, or the body itself. These types are usually insectoid, arthropodial, or snakelike in nature. Another kind are those that fly, mainly resembling prehistoric pteranodons, or certain birds of prey. These types of Machine Soldier cannot hold weapons like a Humanoid Machine Soldier, so instead, weapons are mounted on the machine, or in some cases, integrated into the Machina Militaris itself.

<Umbra>
Not much is known about this organization, other that it's bad news. Some say that they are the ones who gave Machine Soldiers to the bandits. Others believe that entire cities, maybe even COUNTRIES, are under this organization's control, but there has been little to no evidence to support these claims.

<World Government Coalition>
Often abbreviated to the WGC, the World Government Coalition is dedicated to the cause of bringing the law to the lawless wastelands of the planet. They boast a massive force of Machine Soldiers of all types, and have scientists researching these machines, developing new weaponry, parts, even new Machina Militaris as well! Though progress is slow, technicians estimate that the rollout of new model Machine Soldiers may very well be soon...

So going on the alt-history idea provided for April Fools, I would like to re-introduce my LoGH-style "Behind the lines" idea. While the details would have yet to be hammered out, I have a few changes in mind:

>Instead of Tanks, bipedal mecha were developed in the first world war.

>The Nazis didn't seize power in Germany (So we can dodge any controversies), instead an ultranationalist, imperialist, Monarchist party took power through a violent coup. There is currently a new Kaiser in Germany.

>Vladimir Lenin's dying wishes were more properly fulfilled, and Trotsky was placed in command of the USSR. However, Stalin still holds power, and his ambition hasn't faltered.

Let's avoid controversy, guys. No controversy.

Like I said, this is the idea in it's rawest form. I was thinking of keeping the Stalinist faction around just to keep up the soviet intrigue- but what if Trotsky actually had to fight Stalin for power after Lenin's death, rather than just simply earning succession?

The whole setting is going to be built from "What-ifs" that go back as far as the first world war.

Here's a serious suggestion:

If you want to avoid the Nazis and you're going heavy alt history anyway why not just say the 1918 Revolution failed after a severe crackdown from the royalists (say, perhaps, in part due to heavy, organized use of the Freikorps against leftist elements) after Wilhelm II retained support from the military and refused to abdicate, and Imperial Germany simply never ceased to exist after the first World War. The economy turned to crap after the war, the same way it did for the Weimar Republic, and eventually the government goes ultranationalist to re-unite the empire against outside threats (whether they're real or not is not important, as we learned historically).

No need to come up with a new imperialist, monarchist government when you've got one already! :D

So, well, I have an idea for an RP, but since it's pretty much two factions against each other, you guys might not like it.
Spoiler: show
It is the early 24th Century, and mankind has spread it's lust for war to the other planets of the Solar system. Split between the democratic, socialist Earth Union and the monarchical & corporatist Grand Jovia Empire, human kind once again pushes itself to the brink of extinction over their ultimately petty differences. The Great Solar War rages on, just as it has for the past year since the Empire's attempt at a knockout blow in 2314: Operation Anubis; a two pronged attempt by Imperial forces to simultaneously drop the mining asteroid "New Sheffield" onto the Union's capital of Mombasa whilst diversionary forces severed the upper tether of the Macapa Space Elevator in South America. Despite both actions being stopped, the loss of life from Anubis was horrible, with the meteor shower from New Sheffield's destruction scattering debris in low orbit over Africa and temporarily damaging the African Mombasa Elevator. With most of it's military forces in chaos in the aftermath of Anubis, the Union has been on the defensive, guarding earth, Mars, and their satellites from regular Jovia attacks with exhausted forces, slowly losing more and more ground to the Empire. Until Now.

The backbone of both sides in the Great Solar War are Combat Frames: Humanoid combat vehicles capable of, and indeed designed explicitly for combat on planets, in space, and within space habitats. The main difference between Jovia and Union frames are how they're used. The Empire does not seem to believe in multirole designs, having dozens of differing Combat Frame designs, each for a specialized purpose; The Empire also does not use carriers for their Frames, all of their ships have the capacity to carry atleast a single squad of frames. The Union's philosophy is completely different from the Empire's: While the Empire has dozens of designs, the Union only has a single Combat Frame design, the multirole Puma, which is mass produced in large quantities and carried on dedicated Carriers. Another major difference is in the technology used: The Union mainly uses human developed technology such as fusion reactors and electromagnetic weapons, the Empire mainly uses Precursor-Derived technology such as Semi-Reactionless drives and Atom Laser weapons. The Jovia Empire developed Combat Frames initially, and the technology was stolen by the Union.

The Earth Union(Full Name: Earth Federal Union Government) is a true one world government, formed following the exodus of the majority of the remaining populations of the Northern United States and Canada, The European Union, Japan and Russia from earth due to the devastation caused by the HUNDUN Asteroid. With the world in turmoil in the fifty years after the impact, a new order slowly emerged, the damage to earth slowly being repaired over the course of the 22nd century. The growth of major powers; the South American UNASUR, African AU, The Indian Republic, the Iranian-Turkish-Egyptian Alliance, ASEAN, and a resurgent China; nearly brought the world back to the brink until cooler heads prevailed, and the Earth Federal Union Government was formed. The Union as of 2314 had control over the entire Earth-Moon system, and had begun second stage terraforming and colonization of Mars, as well as exploitation of the asteroid belt; the Jovia offensive has managed to conquer the Union's colonies, including Mars and strategic habitats. With no need for a military following the creation of the Union, War had been almost unheard of for 150 years before the Jovia attacked- the most action seen was generally in the police forces. Caught unawares by the Jovia, the Union was forced to once again practice the art of war. The backbone of the Union Space Force's new military are it's new carrier groups and combat frames, capable of carrying more craft on-board a dedicated carrier than the organic shipboard craft of Jovia Cruisers and Battleships.

The Union's population is, befitting it's status, composed of populations either from it's founding countries, or colonists. The Union itself has been called by it's Jovia detractors a "Corrupt Welfare State " because of it's democratic practices and socialist practices. The Union is a representative democracy, with a bicameral legislature(General Assembly and Senate), an executive branch(President of the Earth Union), and a Judicial branch. Assemblymen and Senators are restricted by law to two four year terms at a maximum; the same is true for the President. The complex bureaucracy is mainly non-existant here, with many of the jobs done by it having been replaced by advanced Expert Systems. Despite(or rather, given the rather Liberationist bent of most earth religions, because of) the majority of the Union's population being highly religious (The most practiced religion is Roman Catholicism, followed by Islam, Protestant Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, and various syncretic beliefs), The Earth Union recognizes marriage between Humans of all genders and orientations, and is a highly socialist state: The Union pays for it's citizens basic food, lodging, healthcare, telecommunications, and all education. Cybernetics, and an omnipresent internet are a basic way of life in the Union: The average citizen has at-least a government provided wireless data implant, which allows them to access the internet at all times, with many people being even more modified. Genetic Engineering is a touchy subject in the union, with only in-vitro and in-utero modification allowed by law, and only to a limited extent: Extensive physical and mental upgrades beyond human baseline are expressly banned. Corporations are severely neutered in the Union, and don't have much power.

The Grand Jovia Empire is an Absolute Monarchy controlled by the Von Aikawa dynasty, which directly controls the colony of Europa, and counts both the Jovian and Titanian systems as it's vassals gained through conquest, and seeks to conquer the remainder of humanity to satisfy it's ambitions. Descended from refugee colonists from Germany, North America, and Japan, the Grand Jovia Empire's forebears utilized extreme genetic engineering just to survive the harsh and unforgiving outer planets. Settling on Europa, the colonists found an ancient alien facility filled with wonderous technology, which they used to rapidly conquer the other colonies. The leader of the Europan forces, Marshall Theodore Richter, declared himself Kaiser Von Aikawa, officially forming the Grand Jovia Empire.

The Grand Jovia empire is a harsh, unforgiving militaristic society that is explicitly inspired by ancient aristocracy. Decades of propaganda have brainwashed both the non-Europan underclass and the Europan Nobility to believe that the Earth Union is at fault for all of their hardships, to the extent that the Empire's goal is to cleanse the Earth and Mars of the so-called filthy subhumans who inhabit it. All those of non-Europan descent are technically classified as property of one of three big Jovia corporations: Neuwork, Reichstaff, or Richter Heavy Industries. Only Europans are allowed to serve in combat roles in the military, rounding out any personnel shortcomings with genetically engineered bioroids. The average Europan is heavily genetically engineered without regards to long term health or sanity: the reason being that greater ability was seen as far more important than long term health. The Von Aikawa dynasty recieves the most extensive genetic treatments, giving them a glamour about them as well as superhuman intelligence and physical attributes, at the cost of various effects of sanity.

Earth Union PCs are Combat Frame pilots onboard the SFV White Swan, the lead ship in the White Swan class of Assault Carriers on it's shakedown cruise from the Macapa Space Yard to Lunar Orbit. Grand Jovia Empire PCs are newly minted Knights onboard the ISS Kwammel, an Ikazuchi class Cruiser en route to reinforce the Imperial forces occupying the dark side of the moon.

This is sort of vague but I'm re-reading the Getter Robo manga and I dusted off SRW:MX a couple of days ago and it's made me feel all hot blooded: I'd like to see somebody run another Super Robot Wars RPG like the one we had briefly back in '06. It died last time because the GM wandered off, but I think SRW has gained in popularity since then and we may be able to do something neat with a players versus GM sort of thing.

you know I've been mostly uninterested in doing anything here since I fell out of TftF but for some reason, right at this moment, something like this here sounds fun. I'm too busy (or unreliable) to be a full time leading GM or anything but I'd gladly support planning, set-up and what have you for a game like that.

I'm in a similar boat to Sume Gai. If anyone wants to get something like this going, I'll be more than willing to assist with the details. Unfortunately, I don't have the time or resources to go for it myself.

Essentially the same concept as in AGE. One basically follows the story of a world through several different eras passing focus from parent to child.

Yes that would be possible. Check out rule 9. It would take a tremendous amount of planning though.

9. If an RPG reaches its planned ending without being closed (for low participation, GM/member abandonment, etc.), then the GM of that RPG has the option of setting up a sequel game without the need for a section vote. If the GM exercises the option to start a new game it must be directly related in some way to the one that has just ended. If a game ends in such a way that a sequel is impossible, this rule does not apply. Use of this rule may continue as long as there is an acceptable level of participation.
