Phase 24

PHASE 24 -- INTO THE FIRE
-------------------------------------
Spoiler
The tension was prominent in Ryuji's face.
He hadn't slept well, and today would be an intense day both physically and mentally.
Internally, he wanted to bite someone's head off like a monster, but no one deserved it.

Maybe.

Maybe Avent did, he thought. The more he'd reviewed his own recent history, the more he believed that he truly was a Newtype. No matter how he tried to logically distance himself from this complicating reality, the more he was sure of it. If he were anywhere else, this wouldn't be a big deal, but in the eyes of the Trans-Pacific Union, even more so to its military forces, the business of being a Newtype was a very dangerous thing.

He still had close to three years left to go, and getting a discharge without a good reason would be near impossible. But what life awaited him outside the structure of the military?
There was no home to return to, not for him. His curse was the very thing that was any semblance of a family: a Newtype in the military of a collective state that despised Newtypes.

If his captain knew, he was giving a pass. Avent Marquis, however, gave no indication of being remotely generous to him in the matter.

"You gonna give it a rest?" Smith called up to the Anubis.
Hisham leaned over enough to be heard with clarity.
"No. I want all our mobile suits in top shape."
"Aw, geez." Smith rubbed the back of his neck. "Well, at least take a break. That's what the rest of us are doing." He turned away, and spoke quietly. "Plus, I've had to take a leak for the past half-hour."

Alice swished her drink around in it's can.
"So what else are you going to do?"
"Hell if I know." Smith leaned back. "I've gone over the thing with a fine tooth comb, and outside of having it torn apart to the last screw and cleaned, I don't know what else can be done for tuning."
"He's not usually this uptight, is he?" she asked.
His head shook. "No, but I have a feeling that our recent bad luck has him on edge. Not that I'm blaming him over that."
"Yeah, but shouldn't we be safe?" Blake sat down with them.
"More or less, but that's not going to do anything." Smith took a swig and then continued. "He's not going to ease up until we're docked in Guam...heh, even then I'm not sure he'll loosen up that much."
"He's a real tight arse."
Smith eyed him.
"I wouldn't say that."
"Why not?"
"Everybody deals with stress differently. With Hisham, he's just driven more to make everything's in order. Look, I'm not saying I'm not being driven a little nuts by it, but that's the way he's been ever since I've known him. Probably why Hawk made him is right hand two weeks after he boarded the ship." He drew a casual smile. "In other words, you can trust him that he'll be driven to do what needs done."

"So that's the case?" Bear prodded.
"Correct, the navigation computer has shut down." The tech confirmed. "But, since that last battle, we've been having trouble with it."
"How long will it take?"
"Depends on what's the problem. I'm in the middle of troubleshooting currently, and once I'm done with that, I'll have a better idea. Right now, I think I know, but I won't say unless I've got a certain diagnosis."
"Understood."

Avent's perturbed sigh foreshadowed what came afterwards.
"Well, congratulations, you managed to live a few minutes longer." He reached over to a keypad in the cockpit, punching in a code. "You're doing it again. You'll do it until it's done right."

Jin's face had draw more sour than typical.
"Damn taskmaster!" He pounded his fist into the seat.
"You're damn right about that." Avent smirked. "I'm the reason they're not trolling the waters for your corpse. I'm here to give you little snots some real training on how to use your mobile suit to it's maximum potential."
"Hey, I know how to use this thing." Jin snapped back.

Ryuji bowed his head, knowing what was to come.
As much as Sky disliked Jin, even she already had developed a sour taste for Avent.
"Corporal Suzaku, get out of that machine now!" Avent snapped, setting the Freya down.
He could see the new Lieutenant had shred Jin’s nerves by the way he exited the Gilgamesh.

Jin was hunched forward, smoldering.
"You-"
It was all he got out before Avent sent him sprawling on the ground.
"Let's get something straight, Suzaku: I know you're a little hothead." He took piercing glances at the Marduk and Lilith. "I've read up on you three, and I know all the right buttons to push."
Blood dripped from Jin's nose to the ground.
Avent continued. "I'm here to maximize these machines, no matter what it takes. You will do what I say, and you'll do it until it's done right. If I have to beat that into your heads with my own fists, so be it."

"I swear, the next chance I get, I'm gonna pound him flat!"
Ryuji looked forlornly at Jin who was sitting, holding an ice pack over his nose.
"Well, you could try to not get ahead of yourself."
An icy glare came at him.
"Right. He'll sport that mobile suit of his somewhere he won't like."
"Hey." Ryuji put up his hands. "I get what you're saying. I don't particularly care for him myself."
As Jin's anger returned focus toward it's initial target, Ryuji crossed his arms and continued.
"I know during training they push you so you're mentally prepared for battle. There's nothing like that with this guy. I kinda sense this is his personality."
"You 'sense' it? Come on, it's seeping from the guy."
Sky, who had been silent, spoke up.
"Normally, I wouldn't think of even siding with you on something like this, but you're right."
Jin looked at her, shocked.
"You mean?"
"Yes, it's as if he gets his kicks off of it. What's worse, he's the type that will get results."
Ryuji looked at her. "He's watching all of us."
"Of course he is."
"Well let me finish." He took a deep breath. "This needs to be absolutely confidential, okay."
The two pilots nodded.
"This is confidential as in I'm dead if word gets out."
He played with his hands, trying to select the right set of words to say.
"That mobile suit that was trying to get us all before we got to port...well, that pilot seems to think..." He struggled with the words that could jeopardize his own life. "He seems to think, heh, I'm a Newtype."
Jin shot to his feet.
"You have got to be kidding me!"

Elena rubbed her eyes.
For the first time in what seemed an eternity, she could open them without watering.
The ache was still prominent inside her chest, but it had lessened considerably since sleeping some.
Her legs slipped to the edge of the bed, eventually falling over until her feet touched the floor.
She groaned.
She felt worn out, but it was good to stand and stretch.
It'd feel even better under a hot shower.

The water was running in one of the shower stalls when she entered the locker room.
"Hey." A voice called out, a hand fluttering above a partition.
It was Alice.
Elena set her clean clothes off to the side.
She returned the greeting, though it was muffled by her shirt.
"Hey, yourself."
"Elena?"
"Yeah, it's me." She confirmed.
A moment later, Alice heard the shower stall beside hers open and the spray kick on.
"What's been going on anyway?" Elena asked. "I've kinda been out of the loop."
"Ah, let's see. We're in Union territory, so we should be alright."
Elena stuck her hand out far enough to give a thumbs up.
"Then, Hisham's is really on everyone's back to get their mobile suit tuned to the max."
The hand flipped over.
"So, I'm really behind?"
"Not necessarily."
"Oh?" Elena moved her head around so she could hear more clearly.
"Smith's helped out some, but he said he'd have to leave some of it to you. He's such a nice man."
Alice giggled.
Elena played along, acting annoyed. "What are you, my mother?"
"No, but, he did help out. And I really do think he's a nice man."
"He's the obnoxious brother I never had, but he's a good guy." She returned under the stream.
"Anyway, what else?"
"Ship looks like hell and a lot of systems are still down."
"Fantastic."
One stream of water shut off, and a door opened and closed.
"But, we're still moving. I hope you like Guam."
"It's about the next best thing to being home, so I'm fine with that."
Alice paused drying her hair with a towel.
"Oh, yeah, you're from Hawaii, so I guess you'd be used to the climate."
"You got it." She could hear Alice rummaging around. "Hey, what are you doing after this?"
There was an almost singing response.
"Meeting up with someone."
Elena was pretty sure, but she had to ask.
"So, you and Smith are...?"
"Seeing each other? Sorta, but it's at that 'complicated' stage?"
Now Elena was silent.
What if?
What if Smith was killed?

"Elena?" Alice called.
"Yeah?"
"Are you okay?"

General Kyoji rocked comfortably in his chair.
"I'd most certainly like to have this process move, but until Deshang has his proof, we're at a loss to have this operation proceed."
"Indeed." The person on the other end agreed. "He will have his proof sooner than later, I hope."
"Naturally. This aggression has been smoldering for some time, and once the proper information has been revealed, the first step will naturally ignite. At this point, we've got too few operatives to use, especially with our most recent loss."
"But the kindling has already been displayed, so the flames this world desires will advance."
The general rested his face in one hand, gently smiling.
"No need for such dramatics. The important measures needed will happen on my end, I can guarantee you that. Unfortunately, the person we need to move to action isn't as easy to push."
"At least currently. Cai Deshang is the man who will initiate the first step. Once he starts to move, we'll begin preparations for the future of man."

Ryuji locked his helmet in place.
"You ready?"
"No, but I don't have a choice." Jin replied bitterly.
The reply was a pathetic one at best.
"None of us do."
Jin just glared at him, saying nothing.

The unwelcomed voice of Avent Marquis flowed through their cockpits.
"Good morning. I very much hope you've slept well, as we will be perfecting these exercises. Now, let’s refresh what each unit is to do in this scenario. Ms. Cavalier, what role does the Gilgamesh unit play?"
Sky was quick to respond.
"It's a support unit, sir."
"And?"
"And it should be further back to provide assistance to other units in front."
"Did the rest of you hear that?" Avent pointed out. "Both the Gilgamesh, and subsequently Aurora are to remain back. They are not effective close-range units. You do not play hero with those units. You blow up the enemy before they get close, and more suitable units will deal those that slip through with. Does everyone understand?"
"Yes." Said Ryuji.
"Roger." Sky affirmed.
Jin grumbled. "Got it."

Elena got up from the table in the mess hall.
"Going so soon?" Smith cracked.
"Yes, it's because of your pit stains."
The whole table laughed.
"No, really, I've got some adjustments to look over. See ya." And she disappeared.

"Hey, now what were you saying earlier about the navigation?" Blake asked.
Smith scratched his head. "Ah, it sounds like they fixed it best they could and we're in China."
"Whoa, that's way off course!"
"Yeah, no kidding, but at least we're not flying blind." He started to get up. "Now, if they'd get some weapon systems up and running, that'd be fantastic too."
Alice was momentarily alarmed. "Those are out too?"
"Yup. That's why I got 'volunteered' to perch up top with my machine for awhile."
"Well, lucky you."
His smile indicated a perverted mindset.
"Hey, I've got the big guns..."
She playfully slapped at him. "Oh, knock it off, you dork."

Otto watched the five mobile suits' movements overwhelm and tear through the 'enemy' machines.
The door opening was of no concern to him with the bustle that had been going on.
"They're becoming a tight operation, wouldn't you say?"
He turned his head, seeing a blond man behind him.
"Yes, they certainly are." He said, slightly wary of the man who lacked any military dress. "I'm not exactly familiar with this place, so I hope it's not insulting when I say I don't know who you are."
The man was pleasant in his reply. "Of course, you're not. I'm Anders Cavalier of the Izanagi Military Design."
The two shook hands.
"Alright, I have heard your name before." Otto nodded. "Captain Otto Schraeder of the Union ship Rhine."
"At first, it's odd." Anders mused, but then continued after seeing a slight, confused expression.
"What I mean in 'odd' is about seeing another westerner over in the Union, but I guess I really shouldn't...not with the mass exodus back then."
"There were a lot of people that left then, but I was born in the Union." Otto said, watching at the mobile suit exercise. "Personally, the entire Newtype hysteria is overblown." He turned toward

Anders. "Don't take this the wrong way as I don't pretend to know the full science here, but I don't see Newtypes as anything more than a person with something that's just a variation of a sense.
Anders was surprised at this and started to speak.
"Don't get me wrong." Otto started. "If someone is an enemy of the Union, it's my duty to stop them. What specifics they have in their capabilities or appearance is unimportant. All I'm concerned with is not blacklisting some people when we don't know the full scope. I think we've scared off some incredible talent in our technology fields."
He closed his eyes.
"I'm sorry. I've said too much from my personal views."

Footsteps were heard as solider walked briskly toward the two men.
He stopped and saluted.
"Captain Schraeder!"
Otto saluted back. "What is it?"
"We just saw a damaged Centurion Guard vessel in the area."
"I don't believe we can offer them help here, as this is a restricted area."
"Yes, sir. However, they have some unique mobile suit, and it's only come up once before in our database."
"When and what mobile suit are you referring to?"
"I think you'd be better suited to tell me, sir. The mobile suit corresponds with one of the units your ship engaged in space a few months back."
Otto had to think several seconds before it registered.
"I see. Where are we monitoring them from?"
"Sir, I'll take you there right now."
------------------------------

"We're going to sortie?" Jin was perplexed.
"Those are the orders." Avent confirmed. "It's time to see if you've learned anything. From what they're telling me, you three should be eager to take on this little excercise."
"Uh, what do you--”?
"Just look at the information on your screens."

It took a few moments, but the image of the mobile suit atop the ship finally registered.
Avent smiled.
"I'm told your last encounter with these people didn't end in your favor last time. Maybe you'd like a rematch?"

Ryuji knew Jin would spring for a chance to take another swing at that group.
"What is the Centurion Guard doing with a Federation mobile suit anyway?" He mumbled to himself.
"Rematch?" Jin broadcast over his own thoughts. "I'd kill for a chance to show them a thing or two with this mobile suit."

Avent's smile drew larger.
"Well, then, shall we move out?"
-------------------------------

Hisham leaned forward inside the cockpit.
"Mobile suits are moving out?" He scrambled to verify what he'd just heard. "Where are we at?"
"It looks like around Shanghai, and yes, there are mobile suits on the move." Bear told him.
"Any contact?"
"Nothing. They haven't said a word to us."
"I see." Hisham rubbed his chin. "I think I'm going to stay on standby with Elena."
"Good move. The Augustus isn't in any position to be engaging a heavy battle."

The comm clicked off and he opened the cockpit hatch. He waved across to the Engel.
"Yeah, what is it?" Elena asked.
"Is your machine ready?"
"Sure is."
"Good. There are some Union mobile suits in the area, and the captain wants to be on guard. I'm going to round up the others, but if there's any trouble, just go an sortie and defend the ship."
The Engel powered on.
"Roger that."
-------------------------------

Even though the damage was clearly seen from a distance, Ryuji still examined it with the long range sensors.
"Looks like they should surrender without a fight."
"I hope they don't." Jin growled. "I want my shot at them."
"Look at the damage to that ship. It won't take much to bring it down, and I doubt they're looking
for trouble with us on our on turf."
"However, they never agreed to end any battle with you, did they?" Avent's words slipped into the other pilots ears.
"Well, no." Ryuji answered.
"Then why, on our own land, are we giving them a chance?"
"But--"
"They attacked you, and you're going to let them waltz away when they're in your sights?"
"Lieutenant!" Ryuji sputtered, not believing what he was hearing from an officer. "What are you saying?"
"Saying? I'm not saying anything. I'm ordering you to disable that ship and any and all mobile suits it has onboard. They're the enemy, so shoot them before they become a problem!"

PHASE 25 -- LAST STAND
----------------------------------
Spoiler
FE 115, March 20
----------------------------------
Hawaii
-------------------------------
Elena sat on the few steps climbing to her father's house. The night sky was open, illuminated by stars and part of the moon. She leaned back, propping herself with her hands.

The door creaked open and shut, bare feet stepping toward her.
"Quite a day, birthday girl." Her father said.
She bent her head back to look at him. "Yeah, thanks again, even though it's such short notice."
He lowered himself down beside her. "Well, your my daughter, so I'd stop the world to make arrangements."
"Word must've gotten out that I'm back though, but I know how it is around here."
The man nodded, an ornery chuckle barely held back.
"Yes, that one young man, oh, what's his name--"
"Jake?"
"That's it--he called."
"Oh, really." She raised an eyebrow. "Of all the guys, I'd figure he'd be the last one, after, well, you know."
"You slugged him? Yeah, he's persistent, especially to be chasing after you. I'll have a talk with him if he--"
"Dad, that's great, but you don't have to." She held up her arm with a clenched fist and a smirk.

"He remembers this. Besides, he's cooled his jets, and he wasn't calling about a date, just surfing."
He exhaled in relief. "That's good." He patted her back. "So, seeing anyone?"
She leaned forward, supporting her head on her fist.
"No, not really. Why?" She eyed him suspiciously. "Is there some charming man you were thinking I should meet."
He shrugged. "Well, it's not to say I wasn't thinking about that, but not really. I can give you suggestions if you're interested."
"Oh, gosh!" She laughed. "Not right now. You should feel sorry for whoever's willing to put up with me enough to make me his wife."
After she'd stopped laughing, they sat quietly watching the sky.
"I'm not seeing anyone right now, but there is a nice guy at work. Not sure if I'll bite or not, though with me," she shrugged, "I'll probably try to kill my man first and then get to date him."
They both had to chuckle at that line before he turned to a calmer, more serious note.
"You don't know who you'll end up with or how long you'll wait. I know you've become more mature since you left home, so I think you'll be fine. Just me being your father."

"Yeah, I know."

----------------------------------
Present day
----------------------------------
Ryuji was still grasping to understand what he'd just heard.
"We're initiating an attack?"
"Correct." Avent exasperated. "As far as the Union is concerned, they are an enemy of the state, and therefore to be dealt with as such."

His heart sank. He'd hoped that Avent was just being tough, but this proved otherwise.
He reluctantly pushed the Marduk forward.

A sensation shot down his spine.
The repercussions were familiar, yet somehow different.
It was like the times against those odd enemy mobile suits, but not overbearing.
What was going on here? Was there someone like him with that ship?
----------------------------------

"It can't be."
The words slipped out from Elena's mouth. This sensation was all too familiar, but this setting was wrong. She had to be wrong.

"Did you just say something?" Hisham asked.
"What?" She was startled.
He spoke more slowly and enunciated.
"Did you just say something?"

She hesitated before replying.
"I'm getting that weird feeling again. You know, 'that' feeling."
"No way. We're in Union territory, there shouldn't be any Newtypes here."
"That's what I thought."
She left off the second half that she was also technically from a Union nation.
Hisham picked up on the sudden awkward silence.
"Well, anyway, it's time to head out. It doesn't look like we're being received with open arms.

Alice and Blake should be following us soon."
---------------------------------

Smith watched the Anubis and Engel shoot forward from the catapult.
"You want me to join you?" He asked.
"Not right now. If the Augustus goes down, it's all over for us. Stay put, but give us some cover fire if we go in."
"You got it."
---------------------------------

"I see they're ready to fight us." Avent remarked, then said to himself. "Good."
The Freya shot forward.
"Lets do what we've been doing, formation B."

The Marduk and Lilith sped up their approach, while the Gilgamesh and Aurora slowed down.
"I remember that one." Ryuji breathed, seeing the Engel. "I'm going after that silver unit." He called.
"Make sure you tear it apart." Avent ordered.
---------------------------------

"Here they come." Hisham bellowed.
The air was punctuated by multiple beams seeking to drive them away from the Augustus.
The Anubis fired back, dodging shots.

"Watch that blue one!" Elena yelled. "He's coming in full force."
Smith turned the Vulcan to aim at the Marduk. "I gotcha covered."

Ryuji veered sharply, barely avoiding the blast from the Vulcan's railguns.
"Nothing personal, guys, just orders."
The words made his conscience wretch, but he pushed forward.
That sensation was still coming from the silver machine.
Jin called to him over the comm.
"I can't get up there to do it myself, so make sure you get one of those three for me."
"I'll see what I can do."
There was a more demanding reply.
"No, you need to do it to prove you're still on our side."
The conversation ended.
-----------------------------------

The hatch to Alice's Zeus closed. She'd started it up before then and now activated the comm.
"Hisham, we're coming out now."
"Good. Both of you need to stay close to the ship and defend it until we can break through."
"Got it."
-----------------------------------

As the Freya flew by, Avent noticed the two Zeus’s launching.
"They're starting to dig in." His eyes narrowed as he reached for the comm. "Cavalier?"
"Yes, sir."
"Get closer in. They've just launched a couple more mobile suits, and we need to do something about that."
"Roger."
------------------------------------
Elena blocked the Marduk's beam shots.
"C'mon, come in closer." she said through gritted teeth.
More beams darted past her machine.
The Engel raised a hand to shoot back.

Ryuji braced as the Marduk's shield absorbed the brunt of the blast.
"It has that too?" The light subsided. "I don't remember that."

Now she was closer.
"This isn't right." She hissed. "Why do I have nostalgia from this guy?"
In her mind, she didn't know who this was, but something else told her she did.
------------------------------------

"Looks like we got two more." Smith groaned.
"Great." Hisham took a shot at the agile machine in the sky. "What do they look like?"
"Trouble if you ask me. From what I can tell, they're their heavy-duty machines."
Hisham thought hard.
The Union was setting them up. No warning.

There had to be something they could still do.
"We'll have to move in and cut through those two then. I'm going to go on ahead."
Smith could tell that wasn't all he'd say.
"You takin' anybody?"
"Elena?"

The Engel and Marduk were locked in combat with beam sabers and shields.
"Yeah." She growled, not removing her eyes from their focus on her opponent.
"Up ahead, there are two more units set for the support role. I need you to break off and come with me."
"Wonderful." The lock between the two machines broke, both stepping back to gain a steady foothold.

The Marduk and Engel's pilots stared at each other, unflinching.
"Who are you?" Ryuji asked allowed.
"Why does it matter?" the pilot shot back.

That battle in space flashed to his mind. Deep within his memory, this voice seeped inside.

"So it is you."

Elena's face turned to confusion.
"How do you know me? Should I know you?" The enemy's words chilled her spine.

Ryuji spoke slowly, doubting if he should say anything more.
"You don't know my face, but maybe you're the one from back then?"
"Back when?"

"Back at the colony."

A ripple went through her and Hisham.
"What are the odds this would ever happen”? Hisham whispered slowly.
--------------------------------------

"What are they babbling about in the heat of battle?" Avent wondered, disdain sewn into his words.

"This is a terrible time to be wasting energy on dialogue." He switched to a private comm.

"Cavalier, where are you at?"
"Coming up on the side opposite Ryuji, sir."
"Good."
Avent's patience was waning. "We're spending too much time playing with these mobile suits. This needs to end, and I want us to be the victors."
--------------------------------------

Elena and Ryuji's verbal probing continued.
"I-I can't believe this." Elena stammered, flustered by the situation. "How could this happen?"
"Why are you asking me?" He pointed out, yet wondering the same thing.
"No." She said firmly. "Not what I meant. How could I not sense you before?"

It was Ryuji's turn to be surprised.
"What do you mean?"
"Are you like them?"
"Like who?"
"Like a Newtype?"

The words shot into him.
He pulled back, aiming the beam rifle at the Engel.
"Is that what this sensation means? Or are you pulling some sort of prank?" He demanded.
"Why would I make this up?"
He couldn't form an answer, attempting to at least say something.
"Why..." He trailed off.
------------------------------------
Blake watched the flying enemy continue to circle around, trying to shoot it down but watching the machine gracefully avoid taking a hit.
"What is he doing?" He grumbled.
"Same thing we are: watching Elena and their guy stand and stare at each other." Smith joked.

Suddenly, the IFF blared at him and a dot appeared beside his machine.
"What?" His head snapped around.

An unwelcomed surprise was close to him.
"Where did that come from?"
The mostly black mobile suit sporting a large scythe had somehow snuck up beside him.
He frantically moved away, but found the machine moved right along with him.

"Get away from me!" The Zeus's pilot yelled at Sky, frantically aiming the beam rifle.
The Lilith pulled back its weapon.
"I can't do that. Sorry."

By now, Smith had turned to see an enemy close by, and gunning for one of their Zeus's.
Instantly, he knew something was very wrong.
He knew what was going to happen, but the reality was sinking too slowly for him to react.

The Lilith sliced cleanly through the unfortunate machine, pulling away to clear itself from the subsequent explosion.
----------------------------------
"What was that?" Elena whipped her head around to locate the rumble.

"Damn you!" Smith screamed, targeting the Lilith.
The mobile suit danced away from the blasts and beams raining down upon it, and then vanished before all witnesses.
"Come back here!" He demanded, raging over what had happened.
----------------------------------
Elena returned her focus to the Marduk.
"You know what? It doesn't matter if you're a Newtype or not."
She charged with a new intensity.
"You're the enemy."

There was something different about her attacks this time Ryuji noticed.
They were sharper, more driven.
Even with his new mobile suit, this silver unit was a force to be respected and feared.

He pulled the Marduk back, re-equipping its beam rifle.
The Engel sprayed its CIWS at him, but at the new distance, it wasn't a threat.
As long as he kept her at a distance, he'd have a better chance.
---------------------------------
"Calm down, Smith!" Hisham was firm. "Calm. Down. I need you to stick with me or we're all dead."
Smith shook, the anger twitching his body. His fingers barely hovered over the triggers, his eyes searching for that mobile suit.

Hisham resumed.
"Like I told you earlier, we need to take out their mobile suits in the back."

There was a delay, but a forced response came.
"Okay." He looked out ahead of the Augustus. "I see 'em."
"That's right. Give me some cover and draw that guy Elena's fighting away."
"Got it."

The Anubis moved forward.
"Elena, back to the plan."
--------------------------------
"What plan? I'm kinda busy right now."
The Engel strafed with its shield before itself.
"The one from earlier. Come on now, Smith will cover you."
"But I'm not--"
"You're done now." He cut her off and then emphasized. "Come on."
--------------------------------
Ryuji was relieved that his opponent had broken away from him.

But it was only temporary.
The machine atop the ship had its sights on him, its shots landing precariously close to the Marduk's feet.
He jumped back, firing at the same time.
"Now we've done it."

A Zeus came in and started shooting at him as well.
"Watch over me, Smith." Alice told him.
"But, you're supposed to guard the ship!"
"No," She shook her head. "We’re supposed to guard the ship. I don't know if I can keep up with it, but at least I can see this one. Please," she pleaded. "Be my eyes."

Smith looked at the Marduk, then at Alice's Zeus.
"Alright," He breathed. "Do it."
--------------------------------
Jin was shocked.
"They're coming for us!
"Of course they will." Said Nicoletta, a casual air to her voice. "We've knocked one of their machines off, and in their condition, they are going to be more desperate."
The Aurora leveled its repeating rifle. "Let's please remember that our units aren't good up close." She reminded him.
"I know that!"
"Just saying...in any case, you need to keep moving. This armor is thicker and can take more punishment than yours can."

By now, the Engel and Anubis were within her sights and she began firing.
Jin watched the two machines split paths.
"I want a shot at that silver one." He informed Nicoletta.
"Go for it."
---------------------------------

"No more of us are going down." Elena swore to herself.
The green mobile suit was pelting her with beam fire as she continued forward.
Jin wore a smirk as the machine came closer.
"Now I can pay you back."

The Engel began sidestepping the attacks, blocking whatever followed her.
"That's not good enough!"
Her machine fired once, grazing the head of the Gilgamesh.

Jin's smirk turned to his typical scowl.
"That's way too close."
The flaps on his mobile suit's missile pods opened up.
"Looks like I just got my first kill today." He crowed as the reticule locked on the Engel.

Elena was wide-eyed as the Gilgamesh launched off the missiles from one pod.
"No!"
She worked to raise the shield above the Engel and clenched her eyes shut.

As the dust cloud started to settle, Jin nodded, approving of the wonderful job he just did.
"That's right, I took you down myself." He gloated.

His glee was cut short as the unfired pod suddenly exploded, shaking the cockpit.

"Nice try, pal!" Elena roared, the Engel bursting from the smoke.
It charged ferociously at the reeling Gilgamesh.

Jin tried to ignore the alarms.
"I know! I KNOW!" He slammed his fist on the console. "Shut up already!"
He started to aim out. "Where are yo--!"
A bright light came toward him, and then it was black.
------------------------------------

Avent shook his head, seeing the downed Gilgamesh.
"They can smell their death and are just like wounded animals." He called to Nicoletta. "Can you handle those two?"
"No problem."
"That's good. At least I know you'll help me put an end to this excercise."
-------------------------------------

Alice was getting excited.
"Smith, we're pushing them back!"
"Yeah, I see. That's right, leave us alone!" He yelled at the slowly distanced Marduk.
"Captain?"
"Yes?" Bear answered.
"How much further?"
"Just a little bit longer and we'll hit the ocean."
---------------------------------------

The Aurora stood there, tailing the Anubis every move with the spray from it's repeating rifle.
"I bit off more than I can chew. That was stupid." Hisham criticized himself.

"Hey, want some help?" Elena asked.
"Great timing. This guy's a tough one." He told her. "I'll keep moving around so you can get in closer."
"Will do!"

Nicoletta watched as the Engel rushed in with it's beam saber.
"Gotcha!" Elena said, swinging at the Aurora.

The light and sudden stop of the attack caught her off guard.
"Where'd that come from?" She wondered loudly enough for the enemy to hear.
"You shouldn't take every mobile suit you come across as an easy kill." Nicoletta informed her.

"I'm not like my comrade over there, so don't expect me to fall so readily!"
The Aurora rammed its shoulder hard into the Engel.

Her machine fell backwards, loosing grip of its beam saber, and she worked hard to try and keep it upright.
"This isn't going happen like last time." Elena snarled, bracing herself for any immediate attacks as she righted her machine.
---------------------------------------

"Looks like he's going to stay away for awhile." Smith exhaled, calmer after he and Alice had driven off the Marduk.
"Don't let your guard down, yet. We think that flying machine is heading back this way." Bear cautioned.
"Fine by me." Smith snorted. "We'll take care of him."

As the Freya closed in on the Augustus, Avent targeted the Vulcan.
"I see I need to fix this problem myself."
His machine fired its cannon rapidly, forcing his enemy to try and cover itself.

The Freya transformed to its mobile suit mode, unveiling it's hammer.
"This is where you get off!" He yelled, pummeling the unfortunate Vulcan with it's weapon.

Smith fought to keep the Vulcan upright, but couldn't escape the pull of gravity. As he fell, he watched the Freya land where he'd been perched mere moments prior.
"Not...good."

Bear watched the enemy mobile suit turn to face the bridge, pulling back its hammer. His face was defiant as his will. His hand calmly reached to turn on the comm all over the ship.
"All hands, abandon ship!" He ordered. "All hands, abandon ship!"

Avent looked with contempt into the bridge, and then sent the hammer smashing through it.
"Game over."
The ship slowed down, rocking and shaking, losing its levitation, gracefully turning it's nose to the ground.

Smith's body ached all over. He turned his head slowly, but it was enough.
His strength was drained. Nothing he could do would stop it now. The Augustus skidded on the ground, smoking. From what he felt, there was a large explosion. He knew what it was.

Then he blacked out.

Phase 26

PHASE 26 -- ENEMY OF THE STATE
------------------------------------------
Spoiler
Alice shuddered, turning her head as the Augustus started waves of explosions all over itself.
She searched, rapidly but determinedly for the Vulcan...and for enemies.
"Smith, are you there?"
------------------------------------------

From the Freya's altitude, Avent observed the downed ship and the area around it.
"Ryuji Kai?" He paged.
"Yes, sir." The subordinate replied. "Head back here and take care of the enemy Zeus. Their artillery unit shouldn't be an issue now."
"Roger."
------------------------------------------

Alice could see the toppled Vulcan lying down, unmoving, as she approached.
Finally beside it, she lowered her machine, placing one of it's hands by the cockpit opening.
"Smith?" She called. "Are you alright?"

No response.

She looked forlornly at the cockpit hatch, wanting him to emerge, though not expecting this hope to be realized. He wasn't coming out, and she didn't know his state. Should she leave the relative safety of her cockpit? No...

The restraints slid back and she opened the hatch. Her feet touched down beside the Vulcan's hatch and she crouched beside the closed cockpit. She held herself back as it opened, not sure if she dared view the possible horror inside.

But, she must know the truth. She gingerly, slowly moved her head to see inside.
Smith lay there, strapped to the seat. He looked to have taken a good beating; a gash was somewhere on his head judging by the blood on the headrest.

There, his chest rhythmically rose and collapse.
Her eyes started to water, but she brushed it away. Her first task would be to stop that bleeding and clean him up.

She turned back to her Zeus so she could get a medical kit out.

When she exited for a second time, she nearly dropped the precious box. During the interval, she'd forgotten to watch out for the enemy.
Before her was the Marduk, aiming it's beam rifle straight at her position.

Checkmate.

Disgusted, she slowly placed the kit aside, and lifted her hands in surrender.
------------------------------------------

Despite giving Hisham a very brief reprieve, the Aurora had him back in her sights and making him run. Any ground he might have gained was doing him no good as Nicoletta made sure he couldn't get a shot in.

Hisham knew it.
They all knew it.
He couldn't keep this up indefinitely. He could feel his body strain to keep up it's performance.

There was a time limit on his stamina that rapidly dwindled.

Elena glared at the enemy that had nearly toppled her mobile suit.
"Do that run again." Hisham suddenly came over the comm.
"What?" She could hardly believe the words.
"Do that run again. If we both blitz that suit with beam sabers, we should be able to take it out."
"That's crazy!"
"I'm not saying it's my top pick either," his voice was starting to become ragged, "so any suggestions you have I'm willing to consider."

She didn't. Maybe if she had more time, but out of the air, nothing.
The Engel’s remaining beam saber sparked to life, her resolve renewed with determination.
"Then let's do it."

"Same old trick?" Nicoletta observed.
Elena blocked with the Engel's shield.
"Close."

The Anubis rushed in, taking advantage of Nicoletta's momentary confusion.
Its arm reached back, preparing for a fatal strike.
"Time to finish this!" Hisham roared.

The raised arm flew off with a single shot from the Aurora's repeating rifle.
"Indeed."
With the tip of the gun, Nicoletta swatted the shield arm out of the way for an opening.
She fired a burst into the torso, pushing the mobile suit away and turning from the explosion.

Now it was just two.
The horrifying reality began to sink in to Elena's mind.
"I gotta run." She told herself.
With that the Engel bolted toward a small forest a short distance away.

"It's running away?" Nicoletta watched the shimmering machine flee. "Lieutenant, I'm pursuing one of the remaining mobile suits."
"Wonderful." Avent congratulated her. "That should be the last one. Their other Zeus has surrendered and their artillery unit is out of commission."
"Is the pilot alive?" She asked.
"I don't know. Why?"
"Suzaku is down, and I think he might still be alive if medics are on their way."
"Oh. Well, then, I'll call for that too. Some troops are on the way to pick up all prisoners."
---------------------------------------------

Elena checked the view from the back of her mobile suit, seeing the Aurora still trailing her.
"What am I going to do about this one?" She moaned.
Shots flew past her left, but she knew it was on purpose.

She couldn't stop and surrender. She wasn't going to bend herself if she had any say in it.

The Engel rocked.
The alarms went off, and then the mobile suit dropped down, it's right leg shot at the knee joint.
---------------------------------------------

"Looks like this is over." Nicoletta breathed casually. "Enemy down, checking it out." She called.
---------------------------------------------

Elena pounded the floor of the forest with her feet.
Where she went, where she'd hide--that wasn't important right now. Getting clear from the Engel was. The further away she was, the better.
---------------------------------------------

Anders looked at the four mobile suits his company had created.
"So, what do you think of their performance, captain?" He asked Otto.
The captain turned his head to study the machines as well. "I think they're a good gauge at the future of the Union's mobile suits. While we have a pretty good idea of who manufactured those enemy mobile suits, once they're positively identified, it should give us a better idea of how they'll match up to whatever the Federation is working on."
"What I wonder is why mercenaries came into them." Anders said. "It doesn't seem like standard military practice to just hand over what looks like prototype equipment to mercenaries."
"No, most certainly not--it's very strange. But, I'm sure we'll find something out from one of the prisoners. We have two with a possible third."
-------------------------------------------

It was dark, but Elena stayed low. Lights in the distance told her that the Union had soldiers combing through the woods.
She pulled out the magazine on her machine gun and looked at it.
"This and a pistol are all I've got." She sighed. "Great."
She slammed the magazine back into the gun.

Her eyes sprang open. She didn't know how long she'd been asleep, but the soldiers were definitely closer.

Too close.
She could hear their voices and see a higher concentration of lights.
It was time to move.
Quietly, her hands positioned themselves on her weapon, flipping off the safety.
She slowly rose up and began sneaking further away.

Her pace was agonizingly slow, but she dared not give the Union any supicious activity.
With any luck, maybe they'd just pass by her.
She prayed they would.

The voices were louder, and she could barely sense them moving through the forest.
Her heart was beating so fiercely, she feared they might hear it.
Her head darted left, then right to see how close they were--where they were.

Louder!
Her pursuers were closing in.
She gripped the gun tighter than before, so much she thought she might not be able to move it if needed.

The soldiers’ feet were now clearly audible.
Would they pass her?

"Halt." A voice commanded.
She froze momentarily before realizing they hadn't actually tagged her with their flashlights.
She rushed forward, starting to zigzag. She was going to get away.

Then she spun off to one side, a hot burning sensation in her right arm.
The sound from her mouth was more of surprise than pain as she stumbled.
Only then did the sounds of gunfire register.

A clattering of guns was heard.
"Halt!" The same voice ordered, much more firmly than before.

She slowly let her gun drop down.
Her hands rose, but she winced.
Two soldiers moved forward to frisk her and retrieve her machine gun.
This chase was over.
----------------------------------------------

"A Newtype? Really?" General Kyoji was somewhat shocked. "In a Federation mobile suit."
"Not only that, a prototype unit." The soldier on the other end informed him. "In short, they'd like you to come here to Shanghai and evaluate her."
"Naturally, but how soon?"
"I've been told as soon as you can get here, sir. They want the best."
"Of course." Kyoji eyed his calendar. "Tell them I'll be there tomorrow, and I'll send word about my arrival once I make a few small arrangements."
"Very good, sir."

He set the phone in it's cradle.
"I wonder if this is the same person he told me about?"
His finger tapped the desk. "Guess I'll need to isolate this one then."
---------------------------------------------

Ryuji sat with his head bowed in the waiting area. He didn't know how long he'd need to wait to see Jin, but he was glad to know he was still alive. His eyes were dark from the lack of sleep.

Unsure of how much longer he could do this, he stood and walked over to the floor receptionist.

"Um, it's been awhile since I asked, but is there an update on Jin Suzaku?"
The lady ran her hands over the keyboard.
"Let me look here and see what's...Oh!"
"Oh what?"
"Well, it looks like he's out of surgery."
He was partially relieved, but wished for more.
"Can I see him?"
"Yes, but he'll still be sedated."
"I don't mind, and I won't be long." He told her, rubbing his eyes from the tiredness. "I'm glad to know he's alive."
"Well, then, I'll tell you the room number."

Jin lay in the hospital bed, expectedly unconscious.
Ryuji followed the tubes and machines in the room over to where his fellow pilot lay, parts of his body wrapped in bandages. Some of his hair appeared to have been burnt away and there were some burns and scarring to his face.

Ryuji didn't quite know the full story on what happened, but he'd seen the wrecked and twisted Gilgamesh. Somehow he couldn't bring himself to admit it could have been worse. After all, some would claim there are fates worse than death.

Was this something like that?
----------------------------------------------

The clatter of the holding cell's door was a welcomed nusiance to Elena.
She willingly stepped inside, if only so she might lie down and sleep. The door clanged shut and she made her way over to the protruding ledge.

Her arm ached.
They didn't seem rushed to remove the bullet, and she didn't know if they would.
She sat gingerly on the ledge and reclined.
"So they got you too, huh?" Alice voice came from across the way.
Elena didn't move.
"Yeah. I'm gonna guess we lost."
"Pretty much. I don't know how things will go from here." Alice admitted tiredly. Her usual pep was gone.

Then silence happened.
The haunting question dangled in their mind, but putting it to words was difficult.

"So..." Alice began. "Who's left?"
Elena sighed painfully. "So far, just you and me."
Alice leaned her head against a wall.
"Then it's just three."
"Who else made it?"
"Smith." Alice stumbled and choked over her own words. "I don't know if anyone made it off the Augustus after the battle."

The conversation ended, but Elena could make out pained chokes and sniffs and sobs.
----------------------------------------------

"Who's he?" Sky wondered, noticing a younger, but high-ranking officer meeting Anders.
"Someone very important, General Mamarou Kyoji." Avent informed her. "Didn't your father ever mention him?"
"No, not to me anyway."
"Ah, I see. He's one of the key people in pushing for an update of our mobile suits, and even in the hands of children, they are quite devastating."
She frowned at him.
"Do you consider me a child, Lieutenant?"

His eyes stared into hers.
"As I've already informed you, I've read your records. You and those other two have very little combat experience and still considered by some countries as children."
Her eyes narrowed, but he continued. "I'm not here to be a friend. I'm here for the results.

Either you're going to become an unholy terror in a mobile suit or another kill for the enemy."
-------------------------------------------------

The lamp shining at Elena seemed as bright as the sun.
Lack of meaningful rest and a growing, throbbing pain in her arm didn't work kindly for her. The stiff metal chair was both a blessing and a curse. She was able to sit, but the desire for sleep made her long for the cold ledge. She wasn't herself, and she just wanted a peaceful rest--if she could just have that.

It was also difficult to make out the man behind it, but not his confidence and swagger.

"Hello, miss." He greeted, toasting the air with a large bottle of something. "I am General Kyoji of the Union, and I'd like to have a little chat with you to clear up a few questions we have. I've discussed some things with your friends, but I'm just checking them out with you."
He took a long drink from the bottle and expressed his satisfaction. "I know you're a little beat up here, so I don't want to waste your time. Basically, answer some questions, and we might talk about getting that bullet removed. The more willing you are, the quicker we can be done with this." He smiled warmly.

She perked up at that possibility and gingerly nodded.
"That's great." He sat down and opened the folder on the small table in front of him. "There were three mobile suits onboard that ship that we don't know anything about. Your friends tell me the Federation gave them to you. Is that correct?"

"Yes." Her quiet voice affirmed.
"And what date was that? Do you remember?"
"March 30 of this year."
"Why did they give them to mercenaries?"
"Testing."
"Testing? That seems a little, ah, strange."
"That's what they told us."
"You're sure?"

She nodded as firmly as she could; anything for some sleep.
"Alright." He glanced at the folders contents. "Now, for a change in questions." He folded his hands together. "Are you a Newtype?"
She licked her lips to wet them, contemplating her response.

"Are you a Newtype?" He repeated.
"Yes."
"That being the case, how did you find this out?"
"Someone told me. They told me they could sense me."
"So that would me you could sense them as well, correct?"
"Yes."
"Would you say you could positively identify someone as a Newtype with this...sense?"
"Yes."

He leaned back, looking over the folder once more before continuing the questions.
"How much do you remember about the battle you and your comrades had with our mobile suits?"
"A...fair amount. What do you want to know?"
"Of the mobile suits you were in combat with, did any have a pilot that gave you some sensation?"
"Yes there was." She rubbed her eyes. "It was the bluish one."
"Are you sure?"
"No doubt about it. But...I was kinda surprised." She rolled her head around as she focused on what to say. "I thought Newtypes were frowned upon in the Union." Her lips cracked into a pained smiled.

"But my home is in the Union."
That's what she almost blurted out, but had enough sense not to let that slip.

"While I'm not at liberty to discuss this ordeal, I will thank you for answering my questions."
He stood and closed the folder. "Now, allow me to make some arrangements so that bullet can be removed."

Internally, there was some relief for her.
But, at the same time, there were other questions that rested in the back of her mind.
------------------------------------------------------

Ryuji wondered to himself what this General Kyoji wanted. It wasn't as if he really had anything besides training to look forward to, but a call from a man who'd arrived a few days earlier was odd. He wasn't even his superior.

But then, Ryuji was on a need-to-know basis. He knew that. If it didn't concern his input, they wouldn't tell him.

He gave a sigh, calling an end to these thoughts.
He stood tall as he neared the room he'd been ordered to report to.
Knocking, he was given permission to enter.

He walked into the room and saluted.
A pair of soldiers was on guard inside the room.
"Ryuji Kai, sir!"
The man behind the stood up, but didn't salute.
"Thank you for coming. I don't want to dance around the issue, so I'll get to the point." The General moved to one side of the desk, continuing to speak. "After your last battle, we ran across some, how do I put this, damning evidence against you."

Ryuji's face showed his concern.
"Sir, what--"
"Basically, we have reason to believe that you are a Newtype. Furthermore, after reviewing your actions from March 30 until now, we believe we have a strong case against you for conspiracy and possibly treason."

The accusation struck Ryuji forcefully. So much he swayed from the impact.
The guards stepped forward, pulling his arms behind to cuff them together.
"Of course, we'll determine the full nature during your court martial."
-----------------------------------------------
Unknown
-----------------------------------------------

Elena awoke, with sun shining through a window.
She didn't know how long she'd slept. She felt tired, but not exhausted.
She made herself sit up.

Once she had, she started to examine the room.
There was a needle in her hand leading to an elevated bag on a pole that was almost empty.
She scanned the room to find it wasn't what she'd expected.

It wasn't a sterile, dull army hospital.
It might not be a hospital at all.
The room was essentially white, but the room was very large with a equally large multi-pane window.

She slid to the edge of the bed to see about getting up.
"Where's the bathroom?" She wondered to herself.
Her feet touched the carpeted floor and she slowly stood, placing a hand on the plush bed when she wobbled.

She shielded her eyes and looked out the window.
Outside she could see tall mountains with generous snowcaps.
"Where am I?"
A good question for which she had no answer.
---------------------------------------

Ryuji watched the television.
After the blisteringly quick trial, he expected to be executed.
For whatever reason, he was inside a mansion.
With guards who didn't appear to be from the Union.

He turned his head toward the stairs upon noticing a barely audible creak from the grand set of stairs.
A dark-haired girl in what looked to be silk pajamas slowly descended, holding onto the banister.

She noticed him momentarily, mouthing the words he was thinking.

"Who are you?"

Phase 27

PHASE 27 -- RE-IGNITION
----------------------------------------
Spoiler
The long smoldering tension between the European Federation and Trans-Pacific Union had reached its boiling point and rolling into a full-scale war. Accusations from the Union state that the Federation has been conspiring and actively working to covertly disrupt them militarily and financially, citing investigation results from the Australian conflict and the economic collapse of the Korean Republic.

Naturally, the Federation has countered these accusations, calling the accusations a complete farce.

Regardless of the bickering, since August 5th, F.E. 115 the world has once again seen the blood of many flow on the ground. With so much animosity, many wonder how long this war will last; yet no one knows the answer.
---------------------------------
F.E. 115, July 2
---------------------------------

Cai Dehsang's face was intense, illuminated with his furor.
"I do not claim to know everything." He shook his hand with it's index finger extended. "However, what I can tell you is undeniable. There is subversive activity that has played into recent events, which have cost the Union time, money, and blood. Not only has the Union suffered, but it appears we were led to make a costly war against innocents that were purposely set up to take the blame."
"We cannot undo the past, but we can work to make this right. As the Union did go to war with Australia, we also will help them rebuild and offer them supplies to do so. At the same time, our anger should be directed at some within the European Federation who sought to deceive us, to destroy an economy, to set up a country to blame for their ill intentions. The people behind this should be brought to account for their deeds. We ask not out of malice, but justice. We ask that the Federation help us do this. It is their duty to remove those that are a cancer within their midst."
"We do not make these claims lightly, but with proof as strong as our will to see justice done. We have these deeds documented for all that wish to see them. I extend the hand of the Union to those who desire justice, but we will draw a fist for those that oppose!"
---------------------------------
F.E. 115, July 3
---------------------------------

Leonidas grasped the podium, knuckles white.
"You have all heard these allegations and threats the Union has made to us. These claims are myth; fanciful stories fabricated by those who are warmongers. If Cai Deshang wants to point to the Federation as a source of woe, perhaps he should investigate himself and the council he leads. Are these not the same people who jumped at the chance to raze Australia?"
"Why should we offer up innocent people because of a threat from someone who would fabricate evidence for war? The Union has already manufactured claims to bring war to Australia. How can we start to trust them?"
"By no means will we yield to these farcical allegations and demands. We too desire justice, but we will not throw lambs to the slaughter."

Off to the side, Pagan stood, observing the speech. As the applause rose, he joined in.
A slight smirk formed.
"Well done, chairman." He said quietly. "Well done. You've been immensely helpful."

F.E. 116, May 21
--------------------------------
Olympus Colony Group
--------------------------------

Veronika Becker peered out the window next to her seat inside the shuttle.
She closed her laptop and slid it into it's carrying bag. It would soon be time to pack that up anyway as the shuttle would be docking shortly.

A crewmember floated up to her row to speak.
"Captain Becker, we've been given the okay to dock at the colony. I'd ask you to prepare to disembark, but it looks like you're ahead of me." He chuckled.
"Hey, that's alright." She waved off any notion that he was a bother. "I got to a good stopping point. If I hadn't taken a break for a few seconds, I'd still have my nose in some work. Anyway, I appreciate letting me know."

The shuttle glided into a hangar, eventually coming to a stop and then was locked into place.
Veronika floated down to the patch of people near the shuttle, one extending a hand to help her onto the floor. Once she was standing on the floor, he promptly saluted.

"Captain!"
It was Martin Jennings, one of her subordinates.
She saluted back. "At ease, Lieutenant."
"We're glad you're here, though it was a little early."
She shrugged, and then spoke in a low voice. "That won't hurt anything. Graf is still setting some things up right now. Let's get inside and to a little more private area."
"I understand. I'll look at a conference room--it should be pretty easy to find one."
--------------------------------

Alban Reese rolled his eyes and shook his head.
"So I'm the lucky one to pilot this new suit?"
"Naturally." Wade Fraser told him. "After all, it's you or Jana, but she's supposed to test another unit."
"I still say you should be testing that machine. I mean, you are a much better pilot."
Wade put a hand on his shoulder.
"That's very kind of you. However, that Deus has a psi-res frame. Since I ain't a Newtype like

you, that makes it a very poor choice to throw someone like me in this particular machine."
"Figures." Alban sighed.
"That's the spirit. Plus, nobody said you're the designated pilot."

Alban turned to leave.
"Yet."
---------------------------------

Oldrich Dietz relaxed on one of the chairs in the testing deck. As with the other people there, he wore a headset.
He could see the pilot ascending to the opened cockpit of the mobile suit they were about to test.
"Status?" He asked.
"We're having the maintenance crew do a double-check on the restraints for the Nergal." One man replied back.
"Very good. Please have the pilot power on her mobile suit."
"Roger that." Then he turned his attention to the pilot. "Corporal Benedict, please activate the Nergal."

Inside the Nergal's cockpit, Jana switched on the machine. The mobile suit hummed as its systems came online.
"It's activated and coming to life." She reported.

"Very good." Oldrich approved. "Keep an eye on the gauges."
"They're in good order right now, no problems with the startup, but it's still feels a tad slower than the Scorpio."
"We're still working on that, but if it's the only issue here today, then we've come a considerable." He reminded her.

She shrugged. "Oh well. It looks like everything's fully up so we can see how this thing runs."
"Then let's start testing." Oldrich prompted.

Jana licked her lips and flexed her fingers over the controls. She exhaled, focusing.

Oldrich sat rigidly, completely fixated on the Nergal. The chatter between the rest of the people in the room were filtered out.

Without the aid of the Nergal's sensors, Jana started to visualize everyone around her. Things had turned from her usual merely heightened awareness to an image.

"How much longer is this...”
Someone was talking.
No.

"The algorithm isn't...no, that's not it."

She was hearing their thoughts.

"That chick is pretty hot. I'd love to get a piece of that."

"Almost break time."
"Where's that wrench?"
"This is stupid, I should--" "Oh, brother, not again."
"NotthistimeI'mnotgoingtodrop--!"

And then she felt pummeled by the information.
She lost focus.
The voices disappeared.
The people outside were no longer in view.

She squinted.
"Almost had it." She muttered.
---------------------------------

The door closed and locked.
Veronika set her bag down and then re-initiated the conversation.
"Alright, what's the status here?"
"Ma'am! The Augustine itself is ready to go." Martin began. "Of course, the crew hasn't started boarding yet, nor are they scheduled."
"Supplies?"
"Seventy-nine percent complete."
"Mobile suits?"
"The Scorpio, Mk.II's are being prepared and should be loaded tomorrow. Only two of the three prototype models are being loaded."
She nodded him on.
"Construction on the third unit has taken longer than projected. It's half built when I checked the other day, so even factoring out testing, we're looking at several weeks, if not months."
"Several weeks?" Veronika was taken aback. "That seems a bit long to finish constructing a mobile suit that's partly assembled."
"Yeah, I know, but these three new ones are using a, uh, Newtype-friendly frame. They've been focusing on two of them, which are pretty much ready by the way, leaving the third go."

"I see."
Veronika said nothing more for a few moments while she digested the information.
"Has anyone been assigned to the two mobile suits?
Martin shook his head.
"No, ma'am. Right now, there are two test pilots: Alban Reese and Jana Benedict; however, as of right now, neither one is officially assigned."
He could see that she was thinking. "Unless you take the liberty to permanently assign them."

She crossed her arms, tapping one with the opposite hand.
"No. No, not yet; I'm sure you know what the plan is and how delicate it is."
"Of course."
"I'd like the option to shuffle people around before I do any official assignments. For now, leave those two as their respective pilots. We're being pretty gutsy as it is, so I want to be wise with the resources available."
"Ma'am."

Earth, European Federation
-----------------------------------

Elena gazed out a window in the great room.
The beautiful land outside was so close, yet so far away. Since awaking in this mansion the prior year, she'd not been outside once. Even though she had no idea where she was, there was a longing to step out.

She turned away.
That didn't seem to be a possibility. Guards were on patrol and, as she and Ryuji were shown early on, the windows and doors were rigged with alarms. As many times as she'd considered escape, she dared not risk such a move.

Still, things weren't all bad. Instead of a small cell, they were kept in a mansion. Utterly
bizarre if they were prisoners, but nonetheless better than the alternative; don't bite the hand...yet.

Feet shuffled down the stairs, and she knew who it was before they entered the room.
"Morning, Ryuji." She chirped.
He yawned for a bit, but finally spit out his greeting.
"Morning to you, too."

He moved over to the large plush couch and sat down. She followed and plopped down beside him.
"When did you finally crash?" She asked.
"I remember 3:15 last time I checked the clock, so, yeah late night."
She sighed in light-hearted manner. "You're sure taking advantage of all the books here."
"Yes I am." He closed his eyes and shrugged. "It's a habit I picked up from living at the orphanage and serves me well. Hopefully, I'm not here long enough to read them all."
"But, you're really slacking off." She teased. "All that military discipline out the window."
"Yeah..."

He got up from the couch after a moment.
"Where are you going?"
"To the kitchen. I should go eat since I'm up."

As he walked to the kitchen, he mulled over her comment about the military. While it wasn't his dream, he had a sense of purpose there and the closest thing to a family; his face down turned.

Had.
Not now; with the revelation of being a Newtype, he'd been ferried through a joke of a court-martial and then shipped off to this place. Much better than he'd expected, but still, here he was a prisoner with no set release date.
Were it not for Elena, he was sure he'd have gone mad long ago.
He'd been more reserved; she more direct. Yet, as time went on, they'd grown close. There was no one else here, and having someone to talk with was at least a tiny light in this darkness.

He thought about how they'd crossed paths before even meeting each other. To think that he'd be captive along side a former enemy was largely ironic. Yet, there they were, confiding in each other.

Elena thought about Ryuji as he exited. Finding comfort in a former enemy was darkly amusing, but she'd grown to enjoy his company. Maybe it was because those that she knew were dead or otherwise gone from her life. She hoped she wouldn't lose Ryuji, if only for him being the one trustworthy soul she knew at the moment.

She decided to follow him, even though he could sometimes be of few words, at least verbally.
The mirror she passed told her how she'd changed. Most noticeably, she'd just let her hair grow longer, but her skin was less tan than she remembered.

These weren't the only things that had changed, she noticed. She'd found herself pushing aside simplistic t-shirt and jeans looks, even daring for skirts on rare occasions. A year ago, the thought of dressing up was repulsive; now, it was more enticing.
-----------------------------------------

The darkness outside had long ago told them it was night.
Even though the clocks said later and later times, there was no rush to bed.

Ryuji's eyes followed line after line of the thick book he held, captivated by its words. Without so much as moving his head from it, he shifted, reclining on the couch.

A few rooms away, Elena's feet pounded the treadmill. It wasn't that she was an exercise freak, but she couldn't stay still. If she couldn't get outside, she'd most certainly do something to keep herself in good shape.
-----------------------------------------

From the distance, a man in a black ski masked crouched. focused in through the windows with a scope.
"Well, poindexter's been sitting there for awhile." He said.
"That's fine." Another, also wearing a black ski mask nodded. "What about the girl?"
"Nothing ye--wait. Yeah, I see her."
"Awesome." The second one said. "We've been hoping she was still alive. We just didn't expect her all the way over here."
"Heh. No problem." The first stood up. "Getting those two is easy. Getting inside is the work."
"Guess that's fine. You want me to check with the rest?"
"Sure; once they're ready, we can move in."
--------------------------------------------

"So, yeah. I'm heading upstairs." Elena playfully patted Ryuji's head.
His eyes rolled up from the book to look at her.
"You're not going to melt?" He smiled.
"Nah, but I don't have that sugar 'n spice smell at the moment." She fanned herself with one hand.

"Whew."
With that she made her way to the stairs and then on up.
--------------------------------------------

Outside, multiple darkly clad people gripping silence machine guns slowly converged on the mansion.

Two guards were standing by the front door.
One suddenly dropped.
As the remaining one frantically looked around, he too dropped.

Several masked people rushed to the door.
One carefully tried the latch but found it wouldn't move.
He motioned to another, who crept closer, placing a wad of explosives around the latch.
-------------------------------------------

There was a muffled noise at the front door.
Ryuji thought it odd for the guards to come in at this point. He wasn't putting the book down.

But then, the door crashed open, and black-clad people rushed in, pointing their weapons.
The book slipped from his fingers, as he quickly comprehended the predicament he was in.

"You!" One yelled out as they quickly surrounded him. "Where's the girl?"
-------------------------------------------

Elena tied the belt to her robe, and then went back to drying her hair with the towel.
The steam from her shower had dissipated enough that she could wipe the mirror clean without it being a wasted effort.
She tossed the towel aside and started to run her hands through her hair, pulling it into different styles.

The latch rattled.
"Uh, I'll be out soon." She called out and went back to playing with her hair.

A few seconds later, the door burst open, a figure all in black aiming a gun in her direction.
Instinctively, Elena dropped and crouched.
A package landed close to her and she was startled.
"Put that on." The gunman told her, then slowly backed out.

Elena narrowed her eyes in disgust, yet wondered what this was all about.
She cautiously opened the package before her.
Inside lay all black clothing.
------------------------------------------

Ryuji turned his head, and a few seconds later, several of the black clad people descended the stairs, Elena in tow. He was confused as to why both of them were in black like these intruders.

At this point, he wasn't sure if they were being again captured or what.

"Alright." Said one of masked people. "We got her."
Another put a hand up to one ear and spoke.
"We have both targets and are ready for extraction."

After the small exchange, the room went quiet.
Elena could sense that Ryuji was becoming a little worried.
Ryuji could sense that she was irritated with the situation. He could tell her aggressive side wanted to come out, but she repressed it.
They weren't in any position to take on these intruders.

A rumble was heard outside.
Through the front doorway, part of a large truck could be seen.
Their captors nudged them along, escorting them to the vehicle and then jumping in behind them.

As the truck rolled away, Elena sat with arms and legs crossed and a scowl across her face.
"Okay, what's the deal?" she seethed.
The masked person beside her turned, and she expected him to yell at her to shut up.
Instead, they replied calmly, with a familiar voice.
"Sorry about all that craziness." The mask slid off, and her expression changed to surprise.
"Smith?" Her jaw dropped open.
"And me, too."
She turned her head.
Alice smiled, speaking warmly.
"Long time, no see, Elena."

Phase 28

PHASE 28 - ALLIES AMONG ENEMIES
------------------------------------
Spoiler
Elena's eyes stayed shut for a moment before she re-opened them.
"Alice? Smith? You're alive!" The reality excited and relieved her. "I didn't know what they'd do with you guys."
"Not much." Smith shrugged. "We weren't sure what they were gonna do with you, seeing as how the

Union isn't exactly a great locale for Newtypes. But, hey, we found you and...?" He indicated the unfamiliar face.
"Ryuji. Ryuji Kai." The younger one stated, reserved in his introduction.
"Smith." Said the other. "If you couldn't tell, me and her know Elena." He said, pointing at

Alice.
"So...how did you find us?" Elena asked.
"We've got good help." He replied.
"Centurion Guard?"
Smith shook his head. "No, not for this. We wanted to, but there was a conflict of interest. Then again," he shrugged casually, "I think everyone from the Augustus is dead, as far as the dear old

Guard is concerned.
"So, will they come after us?" She started to worry.
"Nah. They doled out the final pay, and declared us dead on their records. We're free agents. It's standard practice for anyone out of contact for so long."
Elena looked around at the unfamiliar faces around them.
"Then who are these people?"

Smith looked at her apologetically, tapping his fingers on his knees. "Yeah. You might not like this part."
"Try me."
"Remember when we did that dress up job in Helsinki."
She nodded. "Yeah."
Her hand brushed over her forehead.
"The group that, uh, we did that job for." Smith's eyes switched back and forth. "Peoples Resistance of Deutschland, that’s who we’re working with.”

He expected her to explode, but she sat there, saying nothing.

What felt like an eternity finally ended.
"This is gonna be a long story, isn't it."
"Yeah, and I don't know if this is the best time to try and spill it."
"Why?"
"We're going to be heading to space for a rendezvous."
Elena's eyes lit up.
"What kind of connections does the Resistance have? I mean, last time they got slaughtered."

"That's why we're not making a move just yet." One of the unfamiliar people said. "We're proceeding much more slowly. Helsinki was a massive blunder, and quite frankly, it probably wasn't the best target."
"Yeah," Elena nodded. "There are a lot of explanations."
------------------------------------------------
Trans-Pacific Union, China Border
------------------------------------------------

Between the Union and Federation, the battle was fierce and unrelenting. The stamina of either side was strong, yet it still showed evidence of fatigue.

Though his body had been scarred and broken nearly a year ago, Jin Suzaku and focused himself to recovery and then to training. Now, he was back behind the controls of a mobile suit. This time, he was focused, not the reckless fool he had been.

Jin charged the Scorpio with the Nephthys.
The Scorpio drew it's beam saber, lashing out in a wide arc.
He blocked with his shield while drawing his own beam saber.
The Nephthys struck the Federation mobile suit with terrible force and it trembled.
Not wasting a chance, Jin ran the beam saber through the Scorpio's torso.
"It's lightening up over here, Lieutenant; stay or move along?"

Avent responded.
"Clean up as you go along. It looks like we're going to surround them on the east and corral them so they can't run. That should start to crush the enemy morale."
"Roger that!"
Jin was serious but enthusiastic.

"Watch yourself!" Sky warned, after the Lilith flung a beam dagger into a nearby Scorpio.
"Don't worry, I was letting him get closer." He told her.
She casually blew him off, rushing to strike down another Federation mobile suit.
"Whatever."

A beam cut through a group of Scorpios, throwing them into confusion before they were quickly finished off. At a safe distance, the Aurora stood, beam cannon moving to a new target.
"I'm still not impressed by those mobile suits." Nicoletta commented.
"That's what you get with a bunch of foolish children in a state-of-the-art mobile suit." Avent sneered. "I wonder if the Federation also gives children sports cars for their first vehicle."

After the battle was over, damaged machines were checked for survivors by the Union.
The wounded were pulled out and attended to, while the dead were covered.
"You know, I would never have expected you to come back after your injuries." Avent started to Jin.
"Lieutenant." Jin was still surprised to hear any compassion from his immediate officer.
"That's a lot of determination, especially with everything that's happened." Avent continued.
"Well, sir, I can't stay down--not when I know the truth." Jin started slowly. "When I saw that the Federation deliberately put into danger a neutral party to continue their sins, I had to grow up and do whatever I could to stop this madness. Whatever it takes, I want to help put an end to

Newtypes--to destroy the sin."
Avent smiled warmly, placing a hand on Jin's shoulder.
"I'm glad you've chosen to fight with us."
"I couldn't ever return home if I gave up."
The Lieutenant's smile grew broader, even starting to show teeth.
"Excellent."
---------------------------------------------
Olympus Colony Group
---------------------------------------------

The shuttle drifted closer to the Olympus Colony. Inside, those who'd been sleeping were being awakened.

"Hey, Ryuji!" Smith hissed, gently shaking him. "We're landing soon."
Ryuji yawned, raising his arms to stretch; Smith moved on.
He nearly startled when he looked down to see himself in a Federation uniform. Then he remembered everyone had changed into them. Right now, the Resistance didn't want to draw any attention to itself.
He turned to see if Elena needed to be woken up as well, but stopped, noticing the colony outside the window. It was vaguely familiar, but the last time he was here, he'd been preoccupied with other things.

A sigh and audible shuffle told him Elena was coming to, and he instinctively looked down.
"I was just about to get you up."
"Figures." She smiled groggily. "What were you looking at?"
"The colony."
She laughed quietly.
"Who knew we'd be back here again?"
---------------------------------------

As the passengers exited the shuttle, Elena caught Ryuji practicing the Federation salute.
"You're not doing this for real." She reminded him. "It's just a way to BS through."
"I know, but after having the Union's salute drilled into my head, it's a little hard." He told

her, but it was tinged with stress.
He went to practice again, but she put her hand on his arm to stop him.

"Relax."
Her eyes were piercing, yet calmed him.
He took a deep breath and let go.
"Alright. How do I look?"
She gave him a strong thumbs-up."
"Sharp."
----------------------------------------

"Everything is coming together." Martin reported to Veronika. "Supplies are loaded, mobile suits are ready, and the rest of our people with Graf's operation just came in. Would you like to see the Augustine for yourself, ma'am?"
"Of course; now's the time to discover any outstanding issues."
As captain, she put it upon herself to keep tabs on how the operation was proceeding.

She followed him as he walked through the corridors.
"Didn't he say something about this shuttle carrying some special persons?" Martin asked.
"I believe so, but if you're asking about specific details, I don't know."
Martin looked over his shoulder, in disbelief.
"He didn't tell you?"
"No. He didn't have the personalities as a known factor. All I know is that they're very important prisoners--if you can call them that. If what I understood is correct, it seemed as though they were living like kings, albeit confined to a luxurious castle."
They turned a corner.
"Rather odd treatment of prisoners, wouldn't you say?"
"That's is very strange. Who ordered it?"
"Hmm. That's just it." She thought aloud. "That information isn't on record. If I had the actual paperwork, I might have a better idea on were things went wrong, but I don't, so no use speculating."
---------------------------------------

As the group walked, Ryuji was in awe of the things he was witnessing inside the colony.
"I didn't know the Union had this sort of technology."
"Don't feel bad," Elena told him, less thrilled than he. "It's not every day you get an invitation to take a top-secret mobile suit for a spin."
"You don't think they'll send us out or something?"
She closed her eyes.
"I don't know, Ryuji. I know enough to know I don't have anything close to the full picture."
"And you're not letting your guard down." He commented.
"No. Not with what happened last time I ran into this group."
He turned his head toward her.
"Oh?"
"Yeah, we kinda didn't get the full story on a mission that went to hell. Looking back, I have to wonder if that's why we didn't get chased by the Federation in the first place."

Ryuji was about to comment, but then he became tense.
"Elena, do you sense it?"
Her eyes narrowed, sweeping from side to side.
"Yeah, it's that feeling again."
"But, where...is it coming from?"
-------------------------------------

Alban had just sat down inside the cockpit of the Deus when a sensation ran up his spine, a pressure forming in his head.
"What is this?" He wondered, confused by the sensation.
"What do you mean?" Oldrich asked.
"Is Jana running the Nergal or something?"
"No." Oldrich said, slightly confused. "Are you alright?"
"This pressure is intense." Alban started. "I've felt something similar from Jana, but this is so much greater. I've never felt something as strong as this before."
"Alright, let's postpone the test for now until we can figure out where the interference is coming from."
"Fine by me." Alban started to exit the Deus, still perplexed by the sudden feeling. "I thought only two of us were Newtypes here."
--------------------------------------
Earth, European Federation
--------------------------------------

Julia stepped carefully inside the main door to the mansion.
She cautiously observed the room, looking for anything out of place--something to give her insight into what happened to the former occupants.

Some crumpled cloth lay mostly behind the couch and she went over to it.
As she came around, the full picture laid out. Pants, shirt, socks, shoes...did they run off naked? Probably not, but she put the idea in the back of her mind, just in case.

She stood, and rolled around the clothes with one foot.
Nothing.

After her investigation, she stood outside to make a call on her cell phone.
"Those two are definitely gone." She said.
Pagan was on the other end.
"I was afraid of that. I don't suppose you happen to have an idea of who did this?"
"Not yet, but given its location and security, I think there's an information leak. As for who pulled this off, I don't know yet. From what I've seen, it appears that all guards were shot down.

The autopsies might give us some more information from the rounds used."
"Interesting, Major. Any possible ideas, perhaps...?"
"The so-called 'Resistance'? I have a feeling they might be the ones to pull this off. If it is them, that has some very damning indications I'm sure you're aware of."
------------------------------------
Olympus Colony Group
------------------------------------

"Where are we going?" Elena hissed at Smith.
He leaned his head back.
"Look, I've been able to tell you pretty much what us two have been doing, but the whole

Resistance thing? I think I'd rather leave that to someone who knows more."
She furrowed her brow.
"So, you've been going along with this?"
"Not exactly...but, at this point, I'm not sure I really trust the Union or the Federation."
He waved his hand.
"It's not like you've joined up or anything, plus, since you're from the Union, you might want to

see what's going on. I mean, before we got the dungeon treatment, we were mercenaries. Don't tell me you've switched gears and are going to run off and get married or something."

She hesitated in her stride.
"Like I said," Smith reiterated. "I think it's better for you to hear the grand scheme of things from one of the folks running this show."
-------------------------------------

The sight of the Augustine was a magnificent one.
To Veronika, the concept of a beautiful machine, especially one for war, was greatly devoid to her senses. However, to one who'd read the relatively brief overview of the Reformer-class vessel, it was all that more impressive in person.

Martin saluted and presented the ship.
"Your ship, Captain Becker, Reformer-class battleship, Augustine!"
She gave a slight nod.
"Very good."
------------------------------------

The blonde-haired girl cracked open the door for Elena and Ryuji
"Alright, here you go. The captain went out a while ago, but she should be back soon...probably any minute. I'll let her know about you two when she's back."

The two walked inside, and guessed it to be a break room.
"Nothing formal, I know, but you can watch something if you get bored." Their escort told them, indicating a TV hanging in one corner.

After she left, Elena pulled out a chair, straddling it backwards and crossing her arms over the back of it.
"If we're free..." she sighed, resting her chin on her arms. "Why don't things feel like we are?"
"Does it depend on the context?" Ryuji asked in a forced jovial manner.
Elena rolled her head down, groaning. "Ah, never mind. I'm bored as hell with a million questions I don't have answers to."
"Like...?"
"Like why we were both sent to a mansion instead of a prison? You know, we're both Newtypes, and they seem to, you know, have some policy against people like us."
"Well, that wasn't a concern for me." Ryuji began, in a more somber tone. "It's not that I have anything against--well, had--it just didn't matter. It wasn't until everything crashed and I went from a decent grunt to public enemy."

"That's because the Union perceives people like you as a source of potential disruption." A female voice injected. "It's about power, but it's been turned into a quasi-religious sort of crap for it's legitimate facade."
They turned their attention at its source.
"If I were to guess, you two are the ones who just came in." The woman said, walking into the room. "Veronika Becker, Captain." She introduced herself.
"Ryuji Kai!" He started to salute, but Veronika stopped him with a casual wave.
"Don't worry about that. I know you're dressed up to avoid any suspicion, so you don't have to be formal with me."
By this time, Elena had stood.
"Elena Faust."

"Well then," Veronika shut the door and locked it. "Why don't I just explain what's going on. I'm sure you've found out there's a lovely war going on right now between the Union and Federation."
She pulled up a chair for herself, continuing her speech. "We're not concerned about that...at least not when I'm referring to the People's Resistance of Deutschland. So, yes, we are revolting and putting ourselves on the line for this."
"But, why?" Elena was critical. "I mean, you guys did a suicide attack in Helsinki and tried to blow up a reactor, but even then, you had to hire help?"
"Well, I wasn't in charge of those operations, but there were a few miscalculations."
"A few miscalculations?" Elena stepped forward. "Those miscalculations ended up getting a lot of people killed, including those in the Centurion Guard!"
Veronika remained calm, but explained.
"Okay, again, I wasn't involved with the planning, but I do know something about what went on."
Elena stopped, and the captain continued.
"That factory mission; that factory does not technically exist. Most of the people who know about it assume it's a top-secret mobile suit production facility, but it's not. Those mobile that were being produced weren't Federation roll out. We don't know what they're called, but some intelligence we've gathered found a couple units all the way over by Shanghai and Brisbane."

Ryuji's attention became riveted to this. Chills coursed his spine as he hoped his instincts were wrong.
"When were those sightings?"
"April and May of last year." Veronika casually answered. "Why?"
"I might've seen one. Would you happen to have a picture."
Veronika pulled out a cell phone to make a call.
"Heather, I need you to bring the red-level laptop to the break room...Yes, immediately."
Momentarily, the blonde girl returned with the device.

As she worked, Veronika continued talking.
"I'm sure you're wondering why a Federation-developed mobile suit is doing business over in Union territory." Her eye looked up, serious in nature. "So are we."
Then, she turned the machine around so they could see the screen.
"That's what we're looking at."
Ryuji's eyes widened in disbelief.
"That was definitely the one I saw." He confirmed.
"You're sure?"
"No question."
A second gasp was heard.
"Those other ones! I've seen them. I fought those things before!" Elena rattled off, pointing at the Spectres onscreen.
"We have no idea where those came from." Veronika told her.
"I do." Elena pulled back some. "There was a factory in Morrocco. Until the guys I was with blew

it up."
Veronika rubbed her chin.
"So that explains those."

A thought hit Ryuji.
"Just a minute. If this stuff is going on, didn't you tell anybody high up about this? I mean--"
"Of course," Veronika explained. "But, they didn't seem to ever get the information. It was like they never got it. I know there's the dark side of politics, but this is beyond a few crooks feigning ignorance."
"So, they honestly don't know?"
"Precisely."

The words were heavy, but Elena didn't miss a single one. She stood, fists tightening.
"Something stinks," She began. "It wasn't what I wanted to happen. This life hasn't gone in a direction I would've thought."
Veronika and Ryuji looked at her, and she continued.
"Even if I try to walk away, the way things stand, I have nowhere to run in this world. Not my choice, but I'm already in this deep. Vacation is over; I'm ready to go kick some ass!"

Phase 29

PHASE 29 - THE GODDESS ASCENDS
---------------------------------------------
Spoiler
Union warship, Chancellor-class Berlin
---------------------------------------------

Captain Ken Barrett drifted along the hallway. Their mission had been officially activated, and he needed to give the orders to his mobile armor and mobile suit pilots.
Up ahead, he saw one of the pilots dart in.
"Katamari's always the straggler." He muttered. "Oh, well, at least she made it on time."

He opened the door to an almost instant salute of his pilots.
Quickly saluting back, he relieved them of the formality. "As you were."
He looked around the room, examining the faces of the few mobile suit and mobile armor pilots.

Saul Hashishiri, Marion Goldman, Kyo Ryder, Ren Katamari, Zach Bader, Van Ling--they were all there, waiting to hear what he would tell them.

"You are all aware that we're on a classified mission between the Berlin and the Alsfeld." He began, stepping to turn on a screen. "We've been informed on good sources that the Federation is assembling some new prototype mobile suits. I don't know what rumors you've heard, but last year we did capture some older prototypes that were the basis for their current Scorpio mobile suit.

This time, we're hoping to get ahead and retrieve at least one of these machines."
A layout appeared.
"For this mission we will infiltrate the Olympus Colony."

Saul's stern face was intense upon the revelation.
"Sir, the Olympus Colony?"
"Correct. In the past, we've kept our distance as to not ignite any tensions, but as we're well past that flash point, we aren't handling the colony with kid gloves." Ken then continued. "Back to the mission: we believe that the test facility has a bay in this area." He indicated on one image. "This is where we look to strike. Your objective is to enter here, since they've downplayed the opening by making it appear unimportant. Once inside, the goal is to grab any mobile suit you can by either entering one or taking one with your mobile suit."

"I hope I'm not cramping your style by doing this." Elena felt awkward as she was effectively taking the reins of the Deus from Alban.
"Nah," He brushed off her apologetic tone. "What they want me to do I can't. I just don't have enough 'oomph' as a Newtype to make this thing shine." He smiled, hints of irony in his eyes.

"Although it is weird that the captain is letting you and that other guy run our two prototypes."
She closed her eyes and nodded. "Yeah, but it's not the first time...at least for me."
Before she even reopened her eyes, she could tell of his quizzical expression and explained. "I piloted the Engel."
"Oh! I see, then you really might know how to use the Deus."

She put on the helmet.
"We'll see." Her hands fiddled with fitting it properly.
Alban waited, but then started to put a hand out.
"Do you want me to see how it fits?"
"Sure. I'm not used to wearing a full pilot suit."
His hand moved over parts of her neck and then pulled away.
"Well, you've got it in good shape." He stepped back. "Good luck!"

She let out a sigh as she fell into the Deus cockpit.
A seemingly long time had passed since she had sat in a mobile suit, and it felt familiar, yet strange.
As the mobile suit came to life, it became like home.

"How is it?" Oldrich asked.
"Like and old friend."
She smiled warmly, reaching for the controls.
"Alright, let's do this."

Elena started to focus.
Various thoughts began to stream in--slowly, but then building up to a torrent.

"Couplings are good. Whoever wrote the order to change this didn't even look."
"Might be able to finally pound a few brews later on."
"Thisdoesn'tmake sense that I canLet'sjustdothisIneedtogetfurtherawaybecauseshe'stoopowerful..."

Oldrich was drawn to the Deus. In the back of his mind, he fully expected it shut down, but it never did.
"Sir!" One of his staff called to him. "It's been running like this for over thirty minutes."
The older man was surprised.
"Let's see how she's doing."

"How are you holding up?" Oldrich asked.
"I'm getting the hang of it." Elena replied. "I'm just getting used to all the thoughts coming at me. It's really weird."
"As I expected." He rubbed his chin. "Do you know that you've been--"
"Running like this for over a half-hour? Yeah. I caught that little bit."
There was an obvious, genuine awe. "Amazing."

He regained composure. "You don't have to, but if you're up to it, would you be interested in taking it for a spin?"
"Do I have to keep focusing like this?"
"I'd like to see how it does with and without, if that's at all possible."
"Sure, why not."

Chancellor-class Berlin

His Zeus Advanced was running with all checks done, Saul Hashishiri was ready to go.
He reached for the comm.
"Hashishiri squad," He addressed. "are you ready?"
"Done!" Marion reported.
Kyo was next. "Ready."
Van grunted, but Saul knew he was ready to go.
"All set!" Zach informed him.
"Just finished." Ren ended the confirmation.

Saul's Zeus had moved to the catapult.
"Then we're ready."
He waited for the okay.
"Hashishiri squad, launch!"

Mitch Aoba leaned face forward to the wall with the screen.
"The Berlin has started to launch it's mobile suits." Regan Lau informed him.
"Well, that's our cue." He stood back, and saluted her. "Ma'am! Aoba squad, preparing to launch!"

The screen clicked to black and he turned around to his three squad mates who were behind him.
"You heard the captain; into your mobile suits." He commanded.

As they spirited away, he caught up with the pink-haired girl.
"Chantel!" He called. "Hold up a sec."
She slowed down, looking distrustfully and timid over her shoulder.
"Sir?" She stopped, quietly addressing him.
"I noticed you looked worried earlier."
She looked away, bothered that he had noticed. "Oh, I did?"
"Clear as daylight. Mind telling me what the problem is?"
"Space...it's a cold place to fight."
"Well, we might not even do that, you know." He said, trying to relieve her stress. "You have fought on Earth before, correct?"
"Yes, sir."
"Have you taken down an enemy before?"
"Five mobile suits sir?"
"Did you hesitate to pull the trigger?"
"No, sir."
"Were you frightened the first time you took a Zeus out for real combat?"
"Yes, sir."
"Why were you frightened?"
"I realized it wasn't a drill."

Mitch thought for a moment.
"Look at me, Chantel." He said softly, yet with authority.
Her head turned, and he could see the fright from earlier.
"For the short time you've been a pilot, your record is very impressive. It's just jitters. Lots of pilots get them. Even I got them the first few times, but I got used to that." The determination rose in his voice. "I found that you just have to get out and do it. Don't pay attention to that fear; look at doing the job. Look at the job like you've practiced before."

------------------------------------

"Feeling lucky?" Ryuji asked Elena through the comm.
"Is it bad if I do?" She smirked playfully.
"No, but it must be weird doing this." He hesitated. "You know, piloting that suit."
"Yeah, but so was the first time I took a wave without falling off my surfboard."

An exit opened, giving her a flash of familiarity. She recalled her first launch with the Engel and how the situation had turned out.
"Here's hoping for better luck this time out."
Oldrich chuckled.
"Agreed. Looks like everything is cleared for launch."

Elena paused to re-check the controls and various panels, and then looked out.
"Good. Elena, Deus--Launch!"

As the Deus shot out of the opening, Elena felt herself pulled into the seat.
"Maybe it's just me, but this thing has some kick to it!"
"I'm sure it does." Oldrich replied. "The design took everything we liked about the Engel and, ah, added 'some kick' as you put it."
The Deus streaked along the outside of the Olympus colony.
"So, what do you mean? This is some sort of upgrade?"
"Precisely."

Until now, Ryuji had been silent, avidly listening to the exchange.
"Deus...that's 'god' in Greek isn't it?"
Oldrich turned his head and nodded.
"We felt it would be appropriate, given it's something of an upgraded Engel." The man smiled. "By the way, Engel is 'angel' in our native language."

"Angel to god." Ryuji said in a low voice, mentally swishing the connotations.
"I could've told you the Engel part." Elena piped in. "My dad grew up over in Deutschland, so I've picked up a few words."
"Deutschland?" Ryuji questioned the word.
"Call it Germany if you like, but like I said, I grew up with the word and it kinda stuck."
----------------------------------

Further away, the Hashishiri squad zipped toward their destination.
"Colony in sight." Marion reported.
"Alright, let's keep moving." Saul told them. "Remember: we need to be quick on this and have at least one unit in tact."
Affirmations rippled through Saul's cockpit.
He switched the comm over to make a report to the ships in waiting.
"Berlin, Alsfeld: Hashishiri squad is commencing mission."
-----------------------------------

The Deus zipped around outside the colony, fluidly twisting this way and that.
Elena wasn't a mechanical enthusiast, but she could appreciate the engineering on this mobile suit.
"This is a real tight setup. I'm gonna go out a little further and try a few things."
"Fine." Oldrich approved, but then cautioned. "Don't go out too far, though."
"No problem."

As she gained distance from the colony, a beeping came on.
"Okay, what's that?" She muttered, moving her head around to locate the source.
When she found it, there was a rude surprise waiting.
"Mobile suits?"
"What did you say?" Oldrich asked.
She hadn't meant for it to be anything past a breath, but it was louder than she intended.
"Uh, there are some mobile suits popping up on the IFF. Are they doing any training or testing out here?"

There was a pause, but Oldrich replied, concern in his voice.
"No, nothing of the sort was scheduled or launched."
"I don't like the sound of that."
"You might want to head back now."

The unknown machines were getting closer.
"Yeah, that might be a good idea."
She turned the Deus around and started her return to the colony.

A beam zipped by.
It was in no danger of even hitting her mobile suit, but she knew it wasn't a game.
Four mobile suits were in view, flanked by two mobile armors.
"Uh, I think I just hit a snag." She reported, ramping up the Deus speed. "I do believe we have some unwelcomed guests."

"It's moving away!" Kyo shouted.
"Then keep up, slowpoke!" Marion shouted. "Even Ren is out-pacing you!"
"Cut the chatter, people; let's capture that one before they make a fuss and send out extra mobile suits." Saul wasn't about to let them get sidetracked.
---------------------------------------

"The Deus is being attacked?" Veronika was skeptical.
"Yes, and it looks like a Union job." Oldrich confirmed. "I'd ask for the Augustine to launch, but

I don't know if it would do any good."
"We could launch, but if we want a more immediate response that won't do the job."
"That's what I thought as well. Security is being roused as we speak, but I may send out the

Nergal if need be."
"Commander, that's reckless!" She scolded.
"Oh, I'm aware of that, but that might be one of our few options. Preliminary feedback from the Deus indicates a new mobile suit that we don't have data on."
"I understand."
---------------------------------------

"I'm not shaking them!" Elena yelled.
"They haven't tried to shoot you down either." Oldrich thought.
"And I'm glad for that."
It was then he had a disturbing revelation.
"No, it couldn't be."
"What?"
"I think they might be after that mobile suit."
"What!"
Elena couldn't believe what the situation had become.
"We're prepping some Scorpio's as I speak, but..." Oldrich paused. "...If you need to fight, do it. I'm authorizing it."
"Your machines get me into trouble." She growled.

"Van, Zach," Saul ordered his mobile armor pilots. "Pull both of your Nerises to either side of that unit for capture."
The two machines advanced ahead of the Zeus advanced mobile suits.
"Thank you so much for making my job that much easier." Zach smirked, confidently.

Elena saw the two mobile armors were beside her.
"What do you want?" She asked, annoyed with them.
"Just come with us, okay." Van told her.
"Yeah--no." She sarcastically declined.
"Oh, we insist."

With that, both armors launched a net at the Deus, tangling it in the meshed web.
"Thanks!" Zach cheered.
"I hope this idea works." She said to herself, and then started to focus.

"Approach that mobile suit with caution." Saul warned. "It still has a pilot."
"It's not moving and I can't get a hold of the pilot." Van shrugged it off. "I'm not worried."
"Don't let your guard down until I say. That's an order." Saul said firmly.

The mobile armors moved in.
Elena could hear their thoughts.
"Approach the thing with caution. Who friggin' cares?"
"Stupid Federation."
By now, Elena had developed a more justified smirk.
"Gotcha!"

The Deus eyes flashed and it started to move.
From its back, the wing-like folds that had been dormant stretched and expanded outwards.
"What the hell is that?" Zach shouted watching the net strain to hold the captured machine. "What kind of mobile suit has wings?"
By now, the net had disintegrated, leaving the Deus free.

Something lashed out, ripping and tearing through Van's mobile armor.
Zach was close enough to feel the shock from the violent explosion.
"Oh...my...!" He started to panic.
The Deus had almost instantly gotten right up in front of him.
"What kind of mobile suit is this?" He screamed in terror right before the Deus heatrod sent him into the afterlife.

Saul had quickly grown concerned with the new threat.
"Berlin, we've lost two mobile armors and are going to engage the enemy mobile suit."
"You're supposed to capture it." Ken reminded him.
"We'll just see." Saul was cautious, yet biting with his words. "I can't get you a mobile suit if I'm dead."

The Zeus Advanced squad began to fire at the Deus, and Elena could tell the shots weren't for warning.
"I sure hope that shroud thing works like he said." She thought aloud, thundering toward the Union mobile suits.

"Scatter!" Saul bellowed. "Everyone, keep your distance. Do not engage this unit in melee combat."
The Deus screamed by as the Zeus Advanced squad members repositioned their machines.
Kyo squeezed off a shot and watched it dart across space at the new mobile suit.
"Hit it, hit it, hit it!" He breathed, praying the shot was good.
But, it came with dismay as one wing folded to deflect the shot.
He fired again, only to watch the wings interfere.

He closed his eyes tightly and reopened them.
"That did not just happen."
"What happened?" Marion asked.
"Fire off a couple rounds at that thing."
"Duh, that's the point now."

Elena could see flashes of light from the Zeus Advanced mobile suits in the distance, occasionally followed by the Deus's wings flexing.
"I can get used to this."
"Then the Seraphic Shroud is working?" Oldrich asked.
"So far, so good." She enthusiastically reported.

The Deus charged at a Zeus Advanced, brandishing a beam saber along side a heatrod.
"You just picked the wrong girl to tangle with!" Elena growled.
Marion reversed his machine, trying to keep his distance.
"Just stay back, monster!" He cried out, but the words were a pitiful deterrent.
His beam rifle was ripped away, one of the mobile suit's arms still clinging to it.

The heat rod slithered back for a second strike.
"I don't think so!" Kyo roared, his mobile suit careening over the Deus, beam saber poised for a fatal blow.
"Neither do I." Ren came from under.

Elena hurled the beam saber at Kyo's machine, missing the mark.
"That was close--" He was grateful for his fortune, but then beam shots hammered into the mobile suit, knocking off its head and an arm.
A final shot ran through the torso, and the machine promptly burst into a spectacular explosion.

Ren screeched away, holding off her attack as the Deus turned it's attention toward her.

Its wings were spread. One arm was extended. Clearly this machine had a few tricks that the squad was fatally ignorant of.
Ren quickly started to realize this mobile suit was more than they could handle.
Her resolve to fight was waning at this power.

The pilot's voice rang out to her. It was an angry challenge.
"If you want this so bad, then come get it."

The Deus is already handing ass on a platter at high speed. Any more specifications going to come for the suit? A little art, perhaps?

Probably no drawings, and if you've checked the original post, what's there is pretty much all I've planned for the Deus. I'd like to draw up some stuff, but it's been a long time since I've tried to draw mecha (as in, I was probably still in elementary, making it anywhere from 15-20 years ago), so probably not.

The Deus is like the bastard spawn of the Epyon and Wing Zero. Ironically, my least favorite Gundam series (mostly due to execution, not the mecha) was Wing, but they probably have some of the most memorable Gundams.

I figured the iconic MS for this series better kick ass and take names, plus, Elena is more used to combat with heatrods than everyone else, except Pagan, who sorta creamed her with her own weapon.

I'll have to add some more mecha profiles soon.

Phase 30

PHASE 30 - IN WAIT
-------------------------------
Spoiler
Saul's hands wrapped and then clenched around the controls.
In a matter of moments, the mobile suit they were to capture had reduced their force to only two undamaged mobile suits--all without a concerted effort.

"If you want this so bad, then come get it."
The pilot had issued her challenge.
Saul would have liked to take her up on that, but he ruefully forced himself to decline.
He knew the captain would likely be rather upset, but at their current rate, a fight with the target pointed to an abysmal chance of success, particularly one that involved any of his squad being alive.

"Marion, Ren--fall back; we're returning to the ship."

As the three Zeus Advanced's exited the combat area, Elena exhaled in relief.
She was glad for the impromptu battle to end.
"I think this thing works pretty well."
--------------------------------
Chancellor-class Alsfeld
--------------------------------

"They WHAT?" Mitch slapped a hand to one ear, attempting to make sure he was hearing what he thought.
"It seems the Hashishiri squad returned with only two fully intact mobile suits...plus one damaged." Regan explained. "As of now, that's all I know, but I'll obviously pass along anything I hear on the situation."
The conversation ended.

"If this is true, that's one hell of a mobile suit."
--------------------------------
Chancellor-class Berlin
--------------------------------

Marion's face contorted as he examined the remains of his mobile suit.
"Oh, that is just bad!"
He rubbed his forehead, stunned at the damage sustained.
Saul was beside him, arms crossed.
"I'm surprised you're walking away from a mobile suit in that condition." He commented, observing the machine for himself.
"Lucky me, it didn't hit anything critical." He shook his head, disgusted and bewildered. "Now, how the hell are we supposed to capture something like that?"
"Good question; unless we are told otherwise, we'll just have to figure out the extent of its capabilities and work around that. We just got bush whacked by the thing."

So he hoped.

Elena descended from the Deus.
While it wasn't a roar, she could pick out clapping and an occasional whistle.
She undid her helmet, pulling it off while her hair dumped out.
"Wow." She was breathless, momentarily turning back at the Deus. "That was crazy!"

Pounding footsteps were heard off in the distance, but the slowed down, eventually coming to a halt.
"Good. You're in one piece."
It was Ryuji; he was relieved to see her.
"Well, I wasn't about to go down or get captured again."
He smiled and slightly shook his head, then motioned for her to come with him.

As she walked away with him, he smiled.
"You're a troublesome girl, Elena."
She smiled back with a peppy reply.
"Yeah, I know. You have no idea."
"Eh, not quite; I just didn't know how you'd do without any practice--"
"After being locked up for so long?" She shrugged. "Must be like riding a bike or something."

Alice caught a glimpse of the pairs interaction as they walked away.
"Since when did they become so friendly?" She wondered.
"Hey, she didn't kill him while they were in that mansion, so I'd say they're on good terms."

Smith explained.
"Yeah, come to think of it, they have been hanging out together a lot."
He nodded. "Yup."
"I think it's safe to assume she's healed up over Lee."
-----------------------------

Veronika, Martin and Oldrich congregated around a screen.
"I thought I'd show you this video stream from the Deus's battle." Oldrich introduced the media.
They watched as the two mobile armors briefly ensnared the mobile suit before their swift end, and then as the Zeus Advanced machines were driven away.

The clip ended.
"Well, it seems the Union has started to update their arms." Veronika noted. "I'd say they've become nervous since the Scorpio took off."
Oldrich was quick to agree.
"If Izanagi Mobile Design has anything to do with it, they wouldn't let their primary mobile suit fall down so easily. And, honestly, this doesn't surprise me, given the Zeus is a pretty hearty machine in its own right. The Union isn't going to try anything outlandish."
"But, it's something to be aware of. I wish we knew if those new mobile suits were capable of aerial combat." She responded. "We're lucky to have the Mk. II Scorpios on board the Augustine, but I hate to think of what's going to happen until the rest of the Federation gets them."
"Well, that's not a bad thing yet." Oldrich explained. "Production of the Sky Cutter units has started, so even if the Union is rolling out those new Zeus models, there's enough Mk. II's in service now that it shouldn't matter."

Martin frowned.
"Until the Resistance makes its move."
The other two gave him their attention. "It might not be bad that the production is where it's at.

If we're going to pull off a stunt like this, isn't this our good fortune?"
Oldrich had a gleam in his eye.
"You are quite perceptive. That's part of the equation."
Martin understood.
"Right now, all we're waiting on is for Graf to give us the targets and the evidence isn't it?"
"Yes." Veronika affirmed. "However, I think we might consider launching sooner and have both the

Deus and Nergal on board. That video showed there were four mobile suits and two mobile armors--standard for a Chancellor-class ship." She turned to Oldrich. "Commander, if they were going to capture a mobile suit like you suggest, I don't think they'd use just one. They're too small."
He nodded.
"They're probably paired with either a Rhine-class or at least a second Chancellor-class." He tapped his upper lip, thinking.
"Maybe not launch immediately, but be ready to launch. We don't want them razing the colony looking for these machines, so it might be best to see if they come to us. If they do, then launch and clean them out. They'll certainly be prepared, but I don't believe they'll last."
He could tell Veronika respected this idea.
"I'm good at playing dumb, but with the Resistance making a move, I'll have to drop the act."

Uriah ran a hand along the smooth exterior of the mobile suit.
"So, you call this one 'Satyr'?"
"Correct." General Kyoji nodded, a sly grin on his face. "I'm sure you're ready to take it out," He sensed the eagerness. "However, you'll need to exercise a patience a little longer. When the time is right, you'll get the signal."
"Oh, that's just fine." Uriah turned his head, bearing teeth in his smile. "We've been waiting this long, a little extra can work."
"So, where is Shilah anyway?" Kyoji asked knowingly.
"The tank--where else? I just hope she's something more than a meat sack by now."

The general chuckled softly.
"Oh, she's been made in the image of god. I wouldn't worry about her performance."

Jana led Elena and Ryuji along a corridor aboard the Augustine.
"Okay, these are the quarters." She indicated with one hand. "Officially, Federation military code says we're supposed to keep ladies and guys separated to their own side, but with the situation, we're not quite following that." She stopped in front of a set of doors. "Basically, whatever works for you two. They were certainly generous on living space when the Reformer-class was designed, so there's plenty of room either way."

She reached into shirt pocket, pulling out a couple slips of paper.
"Here are the codes for both rooms. Showers and johns are back that a-way, but just don't lock us out for shower sex."
Both Elena and Ryuji blushed momentarily at the
Jana sighed. "It's not you, but I've walked in on people doing that stuff a couple of times." Her head shook. "And," she continued, "I think they'd done it in a mobile suit before." She stopped herself, suddenly. "I guess I'll leave you alone now without my thoughts rattling off."

After Jana had left, Elena looked uncomfortably over at Ryuji.
"In a mobile suit? Of all the places...a freaking mobile suit?"
"I'm sure it's done more often than it's caught." He thought out his explanation. "Well, I guess it would have to be. I know the military tends to frown on public affection, but..."

Elena threw up her hands with a melodramatic flair.
"Oh, save me from the insanity!"
Her arms came down and she let herself collapse into his chest, partially in mock fashion, but partially something else.
"That's very cute when you explain things like that."
His arms hung to the side for a moment, but his left soon crept around her back.
"I see."

Alice rounded the corner, but then stopped and backtracked out of sight.
She slowly peeked around to verify what she thought she saw. Elena definitely had Ryuji in a warm embrace.
"Geez, you are nosy." Jana scolded quietly.
"I am not nosy." Alice corrected. "I'm curious."
Jana rolled her eyes, sure that the other was dipping into voyeurism.
"Well, so are cats, and you know what curiosity does to them."
"It's not like that."
"Really?" Jana asked suspiciously as she shifted her stance to better support the basket in her arms.
"Really." Alice nodded firmly. "There's a story behind it."
"Fine. Tell me some other time because it looks like any possible pilot is going to be on standby when the ship launches."
"When's that?"
Jana managed a shrug as she resumed her walk.
"Either in a couple of days or if the Union tries another run at the colony."

"No such luck for me." Marion pointed at the partially disassembled Zeus. "Looks like it's you two and the guys on the Alsfeld."
Saul took it well.
"Hey, there's not a whole lot you can do about it."
"Well, I'll just wish you two good luck then."
Marion flashed a thumbs up.

As Saul walked away, an announcement rang through the hangar.
"Aoba squad is launching from the Alsfeld!"
He hurried along.
"Guess we'd better join up."
---------------------------------------------
Olympus Colony Group
---------------------------------------------

"So, you're not coming aboard the Augustine?" Veronika asked for clarification.
"Correct." Oldrich stated. "I'm sure you're aware that we're keeping a low profile, and given my importance to the Federation's mobile suit program--"
"It would bring attention we don't want. I suspected that, but I wanted to ensure I was right."
"Anyway, I'm something of the devil's advocate, as that third prototype is going to have to be completed to not arouse suspicion."
She was unconcerned.
"That just comes with the territory. The other two are going with your ship, so the end result shouldn't be anything catastrophic."
Her head bowed respectfully.
"Well, then, I should board my ship."
Oldrich extended a hand.
"Good luck, Captain Becker."
She took it for a firm shake.
"Thank you."

Reformer-class Augustine

"Looks like things are all go." Alban said.
Martin leaned against the wall.
"Should be--the captain's on board now."
"So, then we're launching?"
"Yup. It's also a good time to get down to the hangar."
Alban gave a quizzical look.
"We're expecting some company, and we don't want the maiden voyage tanking right after take off."
"Hmm, then it should be interesting."

Smith looked into the hangar from the upper walkway.
"I'm hoping for better luck against the Union this time around." He commented with an air of sarcasm.
"Why?" Wade questioned him. "So far, the two prototypes we have have been a success."
"I realize that, but their technically conceptual. Plus, I got my ass handed to me in one of the last batch of prototypes."
This took Wade by surprise. "Really?"
"Yeah, the Union isn't slacking, so don't blow them off." Smith took a deep breath before speaking under his breath. "That girl is something else though."
"I'm sorry, I didn't catch that."
Smith continued looking into the hangar.
"I worked with the pilot of the Deus before, and to put it mildly, I'd sure hate to bear the brunt of her wrath. Don't know if she's gotten that good or if that mobile suit is just that good, but...man, I'm glad we're still on the same side."
---------------------------

Veronika entered the bridge to see the ship was being prepped for launch--as planned.
"Progress report?"
"Ma'am!" Martin saluted before rolling into the updates. "Personnel have all boarded, pilots are on standby, weapon systems are on line, power and auxiliary connections from hangar have been removed; we are ready to launch at your mark, captain!"
"Any sign of the Union?" She asked, taking a seat in the captain's chair.
"Two Chancellor-class ships just appeared on our sensors."
"Well then," she said coolly, "I'd hate to keep them waiting."

The hangar was open, and Veronika saw the stars in space.
"Augustine, launch!"
----------------------------

"Will you be alright with the controls?" Wade asked over the comm.
"It's a little different, but I can manage." Ryuji replied. "And for the record, no, I'm not going to have a problem going up against the Union."
"Alright, that's good to hear. We'll let you know when it's your turn to launch."

"Been awhile since we've all been out like this." Smith joked to Elena and Alice.
"Well, hopefully, things turn out better this time out." Elena rolled her eyes.
Smith took on a more serious, yet confident tone.
"I think we'll do fine. I'm glad I've got at least two familiar faces beside me." He couldn't help cracking a grin, which preceded his quip. "It doesn't hurt they're a couple pretty ones either."

"Attention mobile suit pilots: prepare to launch immediately." The order rang throughout the hangar.
"It looks like you're ready to go." Wade told Ryuji, his Scorpio settling into the catapult.

"Launch after I do."
"Will do."
"Great."

"Mr. Frazer, you're cleared for launch." The verbal signal told him.
"Fantastic. Frazer team is ready to go."
He braced himself.
"Wade Frazer, Scorpio, Launch!"

It had been awhile, but the feel of the procedures was ironically comforting to Ryuji.
"Whew!" Elena piped through the comm. "I caught you in the nick of time."
"You sure did. What's up."
"Eh, nothing much--just wanted to wish you good luck."
He wished she could see the smile on his face.
"Thanks. Looks like it's my turn, but I'll catch up with you afterwards."
"I know."

The Nergal locked into the catapult.
"Nergal, you are now cleared for launch."
"Got it."
His eyes flipped toward the exit.
"Ryuji Kai, Nergal, Go!"

The machine snapped forward into space.
The forces upon his body were foreign, but only momentarily.
"Okay, where's he at?" Ryuji wondered.
"Over here." Wade called out. "You ready to do some damage?"
Ryuji had turned into a soldier now, ready for battle.
"Give me my targets."

Earth, Federation Territory
--------------------------------

Graf sat in a chair looking at a screen.
"It's unfortunate they had to launch a few days early, but I do understand the circumstances. You need to play the Federation role as long as possible if we don't want this to blow up in our face."
"Fortunately," Oldrich began, "we had the Augustine ready to go. It does bother me if my suspicion is true: someone is leaking data to the Union."
"Something I've wondered myself." Graf adjusted his seating. "Finding who's doing it, however, has been a bear. But then, that might make discerning the real target all that more complicated. I fear that I might be turning into a conspiracy kook."
Oldrich was quick to deny the self-imposed accusation.
"Trust me, you're not. I've noticed things here that have led me to believe something is happening for an ulterior motive. But, like you, I simply don't know what that is."
"It's funny how the truth is sought, but so hard to find."
"Maybe it's not that, but simply overlooked."
"Very true. In any case, we can't stop looking for that truth." Graf stood to stretch his legs. "I truly believe that the truth, however it's hidden, is there and holds the key to ending the war. There's lies sown on both sides, but the truth can't be concealed forever."

Re: Mobile Suit Gundam Deus (New Phase 4/2/09)

Phase 31 is in progress, but I don't know how soon it'll be completed or posted. I don't know how much I'll be working on it in the near future as I take my wife into the hospital tomorrow night to have labor induced. Basically, I'm going to have my hands full with another project that I can't get out of--if you catch my drift.

Needless to say, this will affect Gundam Legion as well. Stuff will get done, but likely at a slower pace from here on out. Don't want baby poop on my keyboard. ;)

I believe your reason for slowing down is more reasonable than my "got other stuff to do" -one. :D
-We will not be caught by surprise!
*Almost everyone I've killed uttered similar last words.
-Then I am glad once again that you are on my side.
*They've often said that too.

Phase 31

PHASE 31 - MAIDEN BATTLE
------------------------------------

Saul was skeptical.
"They launched two units?"
"That's right." Mitch answered. "One's a Scorpio and the other's a new unit that we have no record

of."
"Well, better luck going at it."
"Hey, that's what I'm hoping for myself."

The link ended, and Saul relaxed momentarily in the cockpit.
-------------------------------------

"Sorry if I'm a little cautious." Ryuji apologized. "I don't know the performance levels of those

Zeus machines."
"Hey, don't feel bad, we don't know that much either." Wade soothed. "We've just started to see

them from the reports circulating."
"Yeah, but I was in the Union before."
"No pressure---it's not like you're some all-knowing god."
Ryuji gave an hesitant chuckle.
"Right."
"Great." Wade aimed the Scorpio's beam rifle. "If they want your mobile suit, they'll come at us."
"Then I'm ready."

The Nergal's beam buster locked into place.
Four Zeus signal's were approaching and Ryuji had a visual.
A beep signaled a lock on the approaching enemy.
"I've got a lock."
"Let them get a little closer." Wade instructed, concentrating on the enemy's path.

"They've got a lock on us!" Hannah Cho was alarmed.
"Stay the course!" Mitch ordered. "We're going to take that one!"
At the moment, it was a game of chicken. Mitch Aoba wasn't about to lose, not with what was at

stake.
--------------------------------------

Inside the Augustine, Smith's mobile suit stomped its way to the catapult.
"Well, they've taken the bait, my friends."
Elena grimaced.
"Just my luck to pilot a coveted mobile suit."
"Don't flaunt that celebrity status too much." He cracked.
--------------------------------------

"Fire!" Wade commanded.
A flood of intense light burst from the tip of the Nergal's buster.

Instinctively, Mitch steered sharply away from destructive light.
"Break away and disable the target! Destroy the other machine!"
The four Zeus Advanced mobile suits broke away, coming around toward the two targets and shooting.
--------------------------------------

"Smith, Scorpio, going out!"
The mobile suit rapidly shot forth from the Augustine, quickly followed by Elena and Alice.
"Who's ready to knock out a Chancellor-class?" He grinned.
"Just lead the way." Said Alice.
Elena let her pass the Deus.
"Stay ahead of me, guys. I bet I'm still a hot item."
"Kinda figured that..." Smith exhaled in preparation.
--------------------------------------

On the Augustine's bridge, Martin reported to Veronika.
"Our mobile suits have launched. Alban and Jana are moving into position to protect the Augustine,

and the enemy is going after the bait."

She nodded in approval.
"I'm surprised the Union is so adamently set on obtaining our prototype mobile suits, but even

though we're playing the part of good Federation soldiers, I can't say I'm thrilled with these

indications."
"As in?" Martin probed.
"While it is two ships versus one, the Deus took out or crippled four units under the control of a

pilot that's been imprisoned for the better part of a year. More than likely, we could simply have

let it go out once again and do all the dirty work."
She looked deeply into Martin's eyes.
"I don't want to be conspiratorial, but I do think something is amiss."
---------------------------------------

"Sir, there's that winged mobile suit from before!" Toru Inaba cried. "It's heading for the

Alsfeld."
"The Hashishiri squad will deal with them."
The mobile suits dodged another set of shots.
"We're going to work on that one. We're going to get one of these mobile suits. Get in close

enough and its big gun won't be useful anymore."

"Give me some cover!" Saul ordered.
Ren aimed at the Deus.
"Got it!"

Elena fell away from the two Scorpios, drawing a beam saber.
She issued her challenge.
"Come on then!"
The leading Zeus Advanced responded by revealing its beam saber.
"I accept your challenge." Saul declared.

"Well, this should be fun." Alice commented.
"What, trying to sink a ship with a couple mobile suits?" Smith asked.
"Of course." She confirmed as the two Scorpios closed in on the Alsfeld.

Saul rushed toward the Deus as fire blazed out from behind him.
"Ren, stay back and do what you're doing."
"Sir!"

The beam sabers clashed, light sparking from the crux formed.
"You did quite a number on my people last time." He informed.
Elena furrowed her brow.
"You brought that on yourself!"
The Deus pressed ahead, but Saul fought to keep its advance to a minimum.
"Really?" The cynical reply began. "The Federation must have a pretty good brainwashing system for

its military."

She was taken aback, momentarily relenting.
"Is it true then, or is it the first time you've heard something other than a stream of lies?" He

chided.
Her face soured at this and she pressed back, harder.
"No!" She cried out. "No, that's not it." She declared.

The Zeus Advanced backed away, spraying its CIWS and reaching for a beam rifle.
"What is it then?" Saul fired.
--------------------------------

The Nergal had put away the beam buster.
"This isn't going to work anymore." Ryuji said, switching his machine to the beam rifles.
"Pretty quick, huh?" Wade asked.
"Yeah, they're faster than the regular Zeus model."
The Scorpio put up its shield against some incoming fire.
"That's what I've noticed too."

"The target is cutting away." Hannah reported.
"Good. Inaba, Grande, keep that Scorpio off Cho and myself--we'll capture that suit."

With that, the machines spit off.

"Keep your eyes sharp--they're making a move." Wade warned.
"Got it." Ryuji confirmed, and navigated the Nergal away. "I'm getting the hang of this mobile

suit, so I'm sure I can deal with the two coming at me."
"That's great, I'll work on the other ones and we'll go from there."

"For such a special machine, it sure doesn't seem like much." Hannah commented with an air of

disgust.
"I hear you, but that other one probably didn't look that special either." Mitch replied. "Look at

what happened."
There was no response, and he focused on the task at hand.
"In any case, let's do what we came here for!"
"Roger!"

The two suits sped up, closing the distance to the Nergal.

"Keep coming." Ryuji breathed, keeping his machine at the same pace.
He knew it was risky, but if the intent was capture, they wouldn't try to shoot him down--at least

not at first. Good things came to those who waited.

As the two Zeus Advanced mobile suits moved in for the capture, Mitch called over to Hannah.
"Please confirm status of capture net launcher."
"All green, sir."

Ryuji saw the enemies split from each other, circling to either side.
A box raised over the right shoulder of both.
"Now!"

Just as Mitch and Hannah fired their nets, the Nergal blasted away.
"Moved out of the way!" He yelled, instinctively diving away.
Hannah was bewildered at the rapid acceleration of the target, but then snapped her head forward

after the alert of her superior.
"Crap!"
Mitch's net flew toward her, open like the maw of a beast.

The Nergal swerved around, coming back toward the would-be captors.
"I can't afford to be captured by you." Ryuji declared, racing toward the incapacitated machine.
Both beam rifles mounted on the Nergal's hips rose to a firing position.
As the system locked onto the helpless machine, the other barreled toward him.

"You won't do that to my people!" Mitch cried.
"Great." Ryuji grimaced at the other enemy as his machine locked on to his first target.
Quickly, he ignited a beam saber in preparation and fired on the flailing Zeus.

Mitch gritted his teeth as Hannah's mobile suit exploded.
He drew the beam saber, closing in on the Nergal
"I'll just have to avenge you!"
But Ryuji had already anticipated this, whirling around to face his attacker.

The two machines slashed at each other, but only one could be the victor.
Before his machine exploded, Mitch knew what this had become.
"Suicide mission."

Ryuji took a deep breathe and exhaled.
"I can't afford to be captured because of a promise I intend to keep." He explained quietly.
---------------------------------

Captain Lau watched the two Scorpio's consistently evade or block fire from the Alsfeld.
"Those are certainly pesky mobile suits." She sighed in disgust. "Well, then we might as well move

ahead so we're close enough for the capture operation."

"Hey, that ship is ignoring us!" Alice grumbled.
Smith's Scorpio circled around to the Alsfeld's rear.
"Then I guess we need to work a little harder."
The mobile suit aimed, and he wore a devilish grin.
"If I shoot this down, then you owe me."
"Owe you what, sweet-cakes?"
"You'll find out if that happens."
---------------------------------

"Like the Union is innocent!" Elena snarled, slashing back. "How can you get away with condemning

someone over something they don't have a choice over?"
The Zeus pelted the Deus with fire, unsuccessful in hitting a worthwhile target.
"Oh, choice? Like those records in Australia said, those 'people' chose to have the procedure

done."
"Yeah, I heard about that, but that's not what happened to me." She declared.
The Deus lashed out with a heat rod, clipping the right arm of the Zeus and knocking it off,

sending the machine spinning away.

Elena chased after the enemy.
She'd heard enough, and this fight was over.
"I've spent too long listening to this garbage." She told herself.

Saul worked to regain control of his machine.
Despite the alarms, he quickly and systematically, he slowly gained control.
"I need to watch myself."
He was reminded of how the previous attempt had gone and checked to see where the Deus might be

attacking from.

As his mobile suit turned, he caught his enemy reel back for the finishing strike.
He gritted his teeth, awaiting the impact.
"A fine way to die."

But a shadow eclipsed the impending death.
"Looks like I got here just in time, sir." Ren told him.

The Zeus Advanced in front of Saul buckled as a heat rod ripped through it.
"Katamari!"
Horrified, yet angry, there was nothing he could do against the winged, silver mobile suit.
----------------------------------

"We lost signals to Aoba and Cho units, call Inaba and Grande to chase that machine." Regan

ordered. "We'll move the Alsfeld and capture it with this ship."
"What about those two mobile suits around your ship?" Ken asked over the comm.
"They're just like flies at the moment and I will not get sidetracked by them."
"I wouldn't ignore them completely. Those mobile suits we're trying to capture were stronger than

anticipated, so there's no telling what extent they might be capable."

Outside, Smith flew from behind the Alsfeld.
"Now that I have my once over, we can do the job."
His Scorpio aimed and fired.
A flash of light confirmed success.
"Alright, there's one down!" He crowed. "Come on and join in the fun." He called to Alice.

On the opposite side of the Alsfeld, her Scorpio came around to a greeting of enemy fire.
"I'm getting there, but they're a little set off!"
She braced as several shots pounded the mobile suit's shield. "And I think it's moving."
"Yeah, I kinda noticed that one." Smith said glumly.
"Ah, great, I bit off more than I could chew." He chided himself. "Nice going."
-------------------------------------

"One of those Chancellor-class units is advancing." Martin reported.
Veronika folded her hands.
"I'm sure they are if they want either prototype so badly."
"What are your orders, ma'am?"
"We go to meet that ship."
"Ma'am! I'll signal Alban and Jana to move with us."

She was ready for battle and sat up to look outside the Augustine before commanding orders.
"All hands prepare for attack! Charge Schizm one and two, load all missile tubes, activate CWIS

and target the advancing Chancellor-class!"
---------------------------------------

"Are you gonna help or what?" Toru was irritated with Chantel.
"Y-yes!" She hesistated, but forced confidence. "I'm going to help you get that machine."
"That's more like it."

Wade just rolled his eyes.
"And I thought our battle plan was spur of the moment. These are the guys coming after us and they

don't seem to have action."
"Hey, Wade?" Ryuji came through the comm. "I just destroyed both of my pursuers."
"Ah, so that explains why these two have started to jet off instead of playing around with me."
His Scorpio shot forward. "I'll try to take them out."

Toru noticed the pursuer.
"He's following us?"
His mobile suit turned enough to aim.
---------------------------------------

"Well, I really did speak too soon." Smith growled, frustrated by his inability to strike down

more of the Alsfeld's guns.
"Not your fault, you know." Alice consoled him. "Mobile suits typically don't knock out--" But she

was interrupted.

"Want some help?" Elena asked as the Deus roared in.
Smith perked to his usual demeanor.
"Hey, ya caught up!"
"Wouldn't miss it, guys."

"Captain, the winged mobile suit has come into range." Reported one of the Alsfeld's bridge crew

members.
"Well, then," Regan made herself comfortable, a victorious smirk across her face. "Let's get it.

Load the concussion missiles and recall our mobile suits. Maybe if we're lucky, that other one

will follow."
"Ma'am, we're down to Inaba and Grande's units."
"Once we're done, that will be plenty to haul it in."
----------------------------------

Ryuji put a hand over one ear.
"They're what?"
"Like I said, they're leaving the area and I think they're headed back to the ship." Wade told

him.
"No flares, though?"
Wade shook his head. "No, and the Deus is in that area."
The Nergal slowed down as it neared the Scorpio.
"We're going after them, aren't we?"
The Scorpio's hand rested on one of the Nergal's shoulders.
"No."
"No?" There was a hint of panic in Ryuji's voice.
"The Augustine is going after one of the enemy ships, and we don't want to run the risk of letting

them take both machines right now."
-----------------------------------

A burst of smoke and light belched as a turret disappeared.
"How the hell do you take out a battleship?" Elena wondered, the Deus darting along to seek a new

target.
"I don't know, but I've seen it done..." Smith exasparated. "But I know it can happen, and I

didn't think it would be this hard."
"Way to go--" Elena started to growl, but stopped when she noticed a group of missiles heading

straight for her.

The Deus's wings wrapped around to cover itself.
Inside, she held on tightly as the bombardment shook the mobile suit violently.

"Elena!" Alice yelled in shock, and began to slow down.
"Don't let your guard down." Smith warned. "Great, they're targeting us now."
If he could have, he would've tried to help out, but the missile barrage forced him to discard the

attempt.

"Second volley--FIRE!" Regan ordered, watching the mobile suit undertake the punishment.
As the barrage subsided, she moved the Alsfeld in for the proverbial kill.
"Prepare the capture nets and move in close."

Elena winced.
Her body ached from the pummeling she felt through the Deus. It was painful to move, but she could

tell the ship was nearly on top of her.
They had her in this sick, vicious cycle.

A small ball of light puffed out from the Alsfeld, and it slowed, albeit slightly.
"All units, move out of the way!"
A familiar voice.
"All units, move out of the way. The Augustine is ready to fire on the enemy battleship."
With the strength she could muster, Elena directed her machine from the line of fire.

As she did, two massive beams sped through the combat field and punched through the Alsfeld.
----------------------------------

"I see, so it's definitely sunk." Ken exhaled. "Recall all of the remaining forces to the Berlin."
He knew there was no point in continuing.
----------------------------------

Ryuji wasted no time sprinting over to the feet of the Deus.
"Wait! Where are you going?" Wade tried to stop him.
"I gotta check on someone."

The lift descended as Elena held onto a rail.
She ached and longed for something to alleviate the pain.
"So, I guess you're alright?" Ryuji called to her, slowing down as he neared.
There was a groan.
"Well, I got to come out by myself, but I feel like I just was the human pinball."
"Glad you're okay."

She took a look of awe at the Deus.
For the beating she took, she was surprised to see it appear brand new.
"You got worried, Ryuji, didn't you?"
He shrugged, but his face confirmed what he was about to say.
"Yeah...you felt it, huh?"
"Well, I was kinda taking a beating at the time, but I noticed. It's like you were right there."

She confessed with an unsure smile.
"I guess we've become closer than I thought."

Ryuji had come closer and placed a hand on the rail.
"That's true, because you're my family."
The hand Elena held her helmet with wrapped around his back, and they embraced.
"I'm glad."

Re: Mobile Suit Gundam Deus (New Phase 5/16/09)

PHASE 32 - MALIGNANT WORLD
----------------------------------

Jana laughed, bending as if to contain herself.
"Oh, man, you should've seen the look on their faces when I told them that. I don't think Alice saw that part."
"Nope. Geez, you're awful." Alice snickered.
"You're pretty ornery." Smith commented, before sipping the coffee. "I bet a thought like that's never crossed Elena's mind."
By now, Jana had sat back up.
"I really couldn't help myself with that one. There's a lot worse that's been done."
"Hey, now, " Wade stepped up behind her, "if you're that revved up, you won't need this." With that he sat a cup atop her head, but didn't let go.

Jana's eyes rolled up. "No, I really do need my coffee. You know how I become without it."
"Well, yes, but being a gentleman prohibits me from saying so." Wade replied casually, moving the cup from her head into her hands.
"Anyway, I guess the ship is headed for Earth, and we'll be re-entering the atmosphere in a few hours."
"Where are we going again, boss man?" Smith asked.
"Last I heard, Saratov, from there, we'll see where the Federation wants us...for now." He folded his arms. "I haven't heard of anything, but I'm very willing to bet any of the higher-ups close by will want a peek at this ship, so we'll need to play along."
------------------------------------

"This is still ironic." Ryuji commented as he looked in the mirror, adjusting the cap on his head. "A former Union soldier in the Federation military."

Elena sat with her legs crossed with her chin supported by her hand watching him.
"Alright, turn my way so I can see."
He calmly did as asked.
She carefully examined him from head to toe, pondering her verdict.

"Well, it looks sharp."
"I hoped it would, considering how many times I wasn't doing it for play."
She stood.
"Practice makes you perfect..."
"Indeed." He responded as they turned toward the door. "This should be interesting."
-------------------------------------

In her quarters, Veronika sat in front of her laptop.
"It's going to be awhile before we land, but the location was one of the possible landing places." She said.
"Hmm... Saratov," Graf mused from the other end. "That's becoming quite the place."
"The Federation has done quite a bit of expansion to that base, so that's likely why the ships orders were to head there."
"Fortunately, we have some sympathy there, even though he is Russian." He hinted.
"Zaskarov?" She replied. "He's a respectable man from what I've picked up."
"That he is," Graf affirmed, and added, "and as a bonus, he's given us some information."
"May I ask what you've found?"
"I don't know if it's anything significant yet, as some of our people are investigating. His information has been...shall I say, 'disturbing'." He sighed, agitated.
"So, how does this go with the information we collected from the former Union pilot with us?"
"I hope that boy is hallucinating." Graf paused. "If the information is true, I sincerely hope this is all a just a very bad dream."
----------------------------------------
Saratov, Russia,
----------------------------------------

Pagan gazed out a window, watching the Augustine land.
"I'm certainly glad to see the first Reformer-class arriving safely. The chairman will be pleased

to have something on equal terms with the Union's Titan-class."
General Zaskarov glanced at him over the screen.
"You were briefed on the battle it had with those two Chancellor-class ship?"
"Of course." The masked figure continued to gaze outside. "Additionally, we have official combat data on two of our prototype mobile suits. Quite the treasure chest of data, wouldn't you say”? He hummed confidently.

"However," the other man started, "isn't it at all disconcerting how the Union happened to be there when one machine did a run in space? I would need more information, but I'm uncomfortable of how this scenario seems to be more than just bad luck."
"Well, that is something to look into." Pagan turned from the window, beginning to pace. "I'm sure there are those who are, shall we say, disloyal to the European Federation. It's quite possible to have someone with the right credentials pass along some sensitive information."
"Undoubtedly. Have you thought of conducting an investigation into the matter?"
"Of course, though with two instances involving the same enemy, it's difficult to say if we truly have a traitor or just ill fortune."

Zaskarov had considered this already, but he wanted to see if the masked man had anything he might accidentally slip from his mouth.
"Well, since you came to see the Augustine, we should see it sooner than later."

As they walked through the halls, Pagan sensed someone vaguely familiar. As the impression lingered, one side of his mouth crept up to a faint smile.
----------------------------------------

"Come on!" Ryuji rushed along.
"We'll get there on time." Elena grumbled. "We're really not enlisted here."
"That's not it." He reached out and grabbed her hand to pull her along with him. "We need to be hidden in formation."
"What? Why?"
"We'll stand out up front. Plus, I'm starting to sense someone..."

He trailed off as they continued to bustle along.
"You too?"
"Yeah." He said.
She sounded agitated. "Great."
"Hopefully it's nothing."
"I hope you're right."
-------------------------------------------
Titan-class Rhine
-------------------------------------------

Avent read through the checklist on a clipboard. He said nothing as he carefully read through each line of work. When he reached the last page, he signed off on the work.
"Then it's ready." He said, handing it back to the mechanic.

He turned and looked at the rest of the mobile suits inside the hanger.
By the look of congregating pilots, he could tell the other machines maintenance were completed.
With a loud clap, he drew attention to himself.

"You all know this isn't easy an easy mission, but we're here because our leaders think that highly of us. They know we do the job when others can't or won't. If you couldn't do it, you'd be dead or with the nameless grunts. This is a great day for the Trans-Pacific Union. This is the beginning of the end for the European Federation."
--------------------------

Ottos had read, re-read, and continued to look over the battle plan.
Operation Athena...that would commence shortly. With all the planning, Saratov would fall and seriously inhibit the Federation's progress.
--------------------------------------------
Saratov, Russia
--------------------------------------------

Flanked by a small escort, Veronika walked down the ramp.
As the group came down, two men headed towards them.

The two sides met just past the ramp, snapping to attention and saluting.
"Captain Veronika Becker of the Reformer-class Augustine." She introduced herself. "We're honored to have you come aboard."

Pagan stepped forward.
"I thank you captain. We've all been looking forward to having the Federation technology catch up with the rest of the world." He congratulated her as they ascended the ramp. "Even more impressive is how you and your crew handled the Union's attack."
"Well, it's not as if these were developed for show, sir. Some of the technology has proven to be rather effective from the little seen in true combat, even more so than anticipated."
"A very good thing." He commented. "I think the lessons learned from the Orion's have spurred mobile suit development in a substantially impressive direction...which may help end the war."
"Of course, although I wish there was some way to have prevented it in the first place."
Pagan nodded.
"I know that's what the Federation wishes."
-------------------------

In the hangar, the entire crew of the Augustine had gathered and lined up in perfect rows.
From Ryuji's probing, he and Elena learned that Alban and Jana felt something else. Furthermore, the sensation was increasing.

Someone very powerful was coming. Both he and Elena were on edge, yet it occurred to him that it might be presumptuous to do so; after all, they were in a collective state that, unlike his birthplace, was friendly to Newtypes.

From her place, Elena could see Veronika march in, flanked by two men.
Getting a glimpse was difficult as they moved.
The officers stopped, snapping to attention. This was swiftly reciprocated by the mass of subordinates.

The older man she saw first. Somehow, he seemed familiar, but she could not match a name to his face.
As she contemplated this, her eyes shifted over to the other man.
When she recognized him, she nearly toppled over from the shock. She focused to force every fiber within to stay firmly in place.

Of all the places, of all the times, there he was: Pagan Czevik.
She clearly remembered him, despite the intense presence he had at their first meeting. She hoped he would not recognize her.

"I've heard about your impressive battle, Captain Becker." Pagan commented. "I would very much like to congratulate the pilots of our latest prototypes on their efforts."

Elena tensed in a panic.
This wasn't happening. She finally had a face to the sensation he produced, and while not overpowering like it was before, it was far different than what she felt from her comrades.

Ryuji could see Elena's feelings come through. There was a hint of fear within the emotional cocktail.
The captain stepped forward to lead the two men into the ranks.
They drew closer, and she continued to tense.

"Sergeant Faust." Veronika addressed. "Commander, this is the pilot of the Deus."
By pure habit, Elena turned and saluted with a hearty "Ma'am!"
"I didn't expect someone so young to pull off such feats, Sergent." Pagan commended, extending a hand to shake. "This is quite a burden you've been stuck with, but you're the bearer of abilities that will help to end this war. I sincerely hope that the technologies of our latest mobile suits maximize the potential of their pilots."
She had no choice but to give a firm shake. "I'm grateful to provide my service." In her mind she expanded to the Resistance.

Pagan started to turn away, but then commented.
"I've seen many people over the years, but you're quite familiar. Have we met before?"
What could she say? What would she say that wouldn't blow her cover?
"Well, I--" She began. "I'm sure I look like many women in the military."
"Naturally, but looks don't convey ones capabilities. Additionally, the technology within those two prototypes can't be used to their full extent by anyone."
He smiled, but the way it crossed his lips disturbed her.

"You should be proud to pilot such a machine as they take a powerful Newtype to make full use of them."
Elena wasn't sure what to say now. She was unnerved.
Was he playing a game with her?

A rumble followed by an air raid siren saved her from answering.
"It seems as though we've come under attack." Pagan mused casually.
"Sir, shall we sortie?" Veronika asked.
Zaskarov nodded sharply. "As quickly as you can. I doubt this is just throwing a few rocks."

Veronika wasted no time pulling a cell phone from her pocket and punching in a few numbers.
"To the crew of the Augustine: we are at a level one. Man your stations and prepare all mobile suits for combat!"
------------------------------------------

Smoke billowed from a building.
"I think we have their attention now." Avent said smugly. "A splendid start to Operation Athena.

Hold your positions right now."
"That's fine, but don't keep me back when they come out." Jin told him.
"Of course not; we'll show the others how to deal with the Federation."
------------------------------------------

Elena reached out to pull herself onto the lift beside the Deus, but stopped from a tug on her shoulder.
"Hold on."
It was Ryuji.
"Yeah?"
"You look a little...off. Is something wrong?"
He was tender, but still called for an answer.

"That guy, with the mask...I remember him." She said.
"How do you know a guy in the Federation that high up?"
"I don't quite, uh, know him personally." She gestured for emphasis. "I happened to bump into him during a mission, and I kinda hope he doesn't remember me. Plus, he's got some aura I sense that I don't like."
"Can't say I'm too fond of whatever vibes he gives off either...they remind me of some enemies I fought before. It felt like the same sensation."
"I really wish I knew what was going on." Elena whined.

A shout prevented Ryuji from conversing further.
"Well, I guess we get to fight again."
The lift to the Deus began to rise.
"I guess so." Elena said glumly.
As Ryuji walked away, she called to him.
"You can't die, you know. You can't keep that promise if you don't come back!"
He looked up at her, serious in expression.
"Death gives me nothing to look for."

"So, any idea what he promised her?" Alice prodded as her Scorpio powered on.
"Beats me." Smith replied. "Don't let your imagination run too wild."
"You kill all the fun."
He grinned.
"That's not what you said last night."
---------------------------------------------

Both Pagan and General Zaskarov moved quickly down a hall.
The conversation on the cell phone ended.
"As I thought." Zaskarov commented. "It's definitely the Union."
"Are you surprised?" Pagan asked.
"Only that they didn't attack sooner. We are prepared, although I'd prefer to have the full scope of what's being thrown at us." He explained calmly. "However, that information is something I should have very shortly when I can make the adjustments to suit our situation."
----------------------------------------------

A Scorpio split down the center.
The Lilith backed away to a safe distance from the machine before it exploded.
"Lieutenant, they're still not coming out." Sky reported.
"I'm sure they will." Avent replied. "Keep your path around the perimeter so you can keep cutting them down. They will respond any moment now, so be ready for the swarm."
"Sir!"

The reality of g-forces set in rapidly for Elena as the Deus was thrust into the air.
"Whoa. I gotta remember about this!" She wowed as she slightly over-compensated with thrusters.
"You okay out there?" Wade asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine." She exhaled a whistle. "I just had to remember about piloting in the atmosphere."
"That's great. We'll be following you out pretty soon, but I think some of the forces here have already gone out."

She began to look around at the situation below.
"The Union is serious...four Nemo-class plus a Titan-class?" She could hardly believe the force sent to attack the base. "Alright, I'll give 'em some hell!"
The Deus instantly dropped ground-ward toward a cluster of Zeus Advanced mobile suits.

As she neared her targets, they had noticed her and began evasive maneuvering combined with a hail of fire to divert the attack.
She locked onto the straggler and the Deus raised an arm.
"Well, you're closest, so you're first."
The light jumped from the mobile suit's open palm and darted into the Zeus.

The others shuffled positions as she continued her descent.
A wing casually brushed off the beams while she chased a new target.
The heat rod reeled back before cracking a mobile suit in the chest, causing it to lose it's beam rifle and knocking off some armor.
To her surprise, it didn't fall much less stop moving.
"Guess I need to work on using this more if it's going to do me any good."

The damaged machine zealously charged, beam saber held out to impale the Deus.
"You should've used a proven weapon!" The pilot shouted. "That mistake will--"
"Do nothing."
Elena cut him off as her mobile suit's beam saber sliced through the enemy.

"This is certainly different." Ryuji commented as he quickly adapted to the Nergal's airborne capabilities.
"It's just like space." Wade told him. "We should get the production versions for the Mark II Scorpio's pretty soon."
"But not today?"
"Yeah. Jana and Alice are on the ground, but we've been losing some mobile suits and can't figure out where it's coming from."
"Huh?"
Wade explained.
"Some of our perimeter forces are being knocked off and we can't figure out from where. If you notice them, take them out."
"Got it."

He looked down to see the Titan-class off in the distance.
There was a bitter smile at what he saw. It was strange that he used to be on a ship like that.
"So you're the troublemaker in the sky!"
Something was very familiar about the voice, and his head darted around searching for a mobile suit.
It was fast, making it difficult to see what the machine was.
"No!"
His eyes went wide when he finally identified what it was.
"The Freya!"
"Well, that's funny; I didn't know the Federation had the name to this mobile suit."
What Ryuji wished wasn't true was clearly not his imagination.
"Avent Marquis!"
"And what of it?" The pilot sneered. "What's it to you?"
"I know you."
"Not for..." Avent started to say with a defensive tongue. "Wait, how do you know me?"
"I'm Ryuji Kai, you should remember."

Silence.

A smug chuckle came through, and the Freya came to hover before the Nergal.
"Well, I guess that report you'd be shot to death was wrong."
Ryuji attempted to sound brave, but still came off as shaken.
"You could say that."
"Someone didn't do their job, so I guess I'll need to do it for them." Avent cracked some knuckles. "I just take care of the trash that other's won't."

Jana and Alice rounded the corner in their mobile suits to see the Deus standing.
"I guess you don't need back up." Jana commented upon seeing various remains of defeated Zeus’s.
"Oh, there's more, I'm sure." Elena replied. "I just figured I would knock these guys out since I was here."
"Did you see any mobile suit that might be knocking off the perimeter mobile suits?"
"Nope."
"Keep your eyes open, because command is a little freaked out."
"I'm sure we'll figure it out."

An alarm went off on the Deus control panel.
"What is it?" Elena looked down, then shouted.
"Incoming!"
The three machines scattered.
"Holy crap! That heat signature was huge!" Alice reported.
"I don't think you want to know." Elena warned.
"Yes, I do..." Alice started to say. "...not. I think we're in some trouble."
Before them were two mobile suits.
One they knew to be the Aurora, but couldn't identify the second.

"The Federation must like the silver scheme or something." Jin commented to Nicoletta.
"It won't matter if the pilot isn't worthwhile." She aimed the beam launcher. "We'll report this in a minute."

Phase 33

PHASE 33 - FACE OF HATRED
----------------------------------

As the dust settled, there was no mistaking the first machine.
How could Elena forget? She couldn't, not after what transpired the last time she faced this enemy.
The memory of the Engel being cut down flashed in her mind. A gasp escaped her lips.

A burst of light shot from the Aurora.
Nicoletta shrugged.
"If you're going to stand there, I'll just take the opportunity to get this over."
When the beam had dissipated, she was surprised to see anything still standing.
"Now, wait," she checked the targeting computer's database, "that was a direct hit."

"We're still alive?" Alice checked.
Jana's Scorpio peeked out from behind the Deus.
"Unless you're hallucinating, yes, we are."
Elena was shaking, but she knew she was alive.
"Okay, okay." She breathed to calm herself. "We can do this."
---------------------------------

"I probably should follow the paper trail, because I clearly remember the report of your execution." Avent hissed. "I saw pictures of your new mobile suit before we arrived. Now, what will it look like after I'm done with you?"
The Freya lashed out with its hammer, something Ryuji barely managed to avoid.

"So this is it?" He shot back. "You're just going to kill me without hearing me out?"
"Of course! There's no reason to question someone who's dead to me." Avent said haughtily.
The Freya transformed to its mobile armor form. "I kept you from death before. It's only appropriate I send the likes of you to hell."

Ryuji saw Avent's machine rushing for him. At the last second, he whipped out of the way and started tracking the Freya.
Several shots moved through the air but missed the target entirely.
"So you're willing to fight me, you little snot?"
"Of course!" Ryuji's determination put an edge to his voice.
With that, he followed after his enemy.

Below, three Scorpio Mk. II's plodded along the outer perimeter of the base.
Smith eyed the Freya with disgust.
"I really don't like that one." He growled.
"Why?" Wade chuckled, unaware. "You sound like he tried to steal your girlfriend."
"Let's just say that would be an upgrade."
"Very well." Wade wasn't inclined to press the issue; after all, they were in the middle of battle. Some enemies had popped up on the sensors, so any small talk was over.
"Alright, we've got some targets coming our way."
"Do they see us?" Alban asked.
"I'm not sure. They don't act like they're moving against us in particular." Wade replied. "We're at a bad spot to shoot, so let's get on the move."
---------------------------------

"So we're not launching the Augustine?" Martin asked for confirmation.
Veronika was relaxed, shook her head. "Not yet. The general wants us to wait as part of a strategy to knock out a Titan-class."
"I see."
"Have you seen how our mobile suits are faring?"
"It looks like they're all alive. The Nergal is engaging in aerial combat against a Union aerial machine. I couldn't spend the time to listen to the entire exchange, but it sounds like Ryuji knows the pilot."
Veronika thought before answering. "I suppose it would be easy to jump on the poor kid and call him a spy, but this attack had to be planned long before. Not to mention him being imprisoned over some flimsy charges accusing him of treason."
"In other words, it's his bad luck."
"And ours." She added. "I didn't pick all the details from his brain, but we should be on guard against any enemy mobile suit that's not a Zeus."

Martin drew a serious and concerned expression.
"The one he's fighting might be one of them then."
"That's what I'm rather afraid of."
------------------------------------

"So, what are we waiting for?" Jana asked, her Scorpio leveling it's beam rifle. "That suit is way too powerful to let stand, you know."
"Yeah, you have no idea." Elena said quietly.
"I heard you the first time, and the Deus has a lot more to offer than the Engel." Jana told her.

"You'll feel much better after you kick their ass."
With that, Jana's machine bolted forward and opened fire.

"Why don't you knock down that Scorpio." Nicoletta suggested.
Before she had finished speaking, the Nephthys had started moving.
"I'm on it." He said coolly.

The ground before Jana flew into the air in several places, forcing her to divert her original approach.
Just as she began to resume her attack plan, a series of beam bursts kept her from proceeding.
She frowned.
"Very clever."
With that the Scorpio returned its own volley of fire at it's enemy.
"By the way, I'm no push over." She informed Jin as her mobile suit leapt forward.

"So, I suppose we ought to help?" Alice suggested.
"Probably." Elena's response held some reservation in her willingness to attack.
A carefully placed single shot buzzed by the Deus.
"You're terrible support." Nicoletta said. "Only one of you is putting up a fight, and you two are hesitating."
"Oh, crap." Alice grimaced. "I think she's talking to us."
"You're so observant." Elena said dryly. "Since we're here, I suppose throwing some weight into this would be a good idea."
The Deus stepped forward.
"Aren't you going to fly?"
"Not right now. I'm not sure how well I'd handle this thing in the air."
Now, the Deus went into motion to attack.
The heatrod trailed behind as Elena pushed her mobile suit to a high speed rush.
She called to Alice.
"Cover fire!"
"You got it."

Closing in on the Aurora, the Deus was poised to deliver a powerful blow.
Nicoletta was surprised at the ferocity of this attack, but still avoided it.
As the Deus slowed to turn back, the Aurora quickly changed to its repeater.
The tone in Elena's voice was filled with determination.
"This won't end like last time."
Nicoletta didn't respond, but the question this posed stuck with her.
This would end of course; another mobile suit in a list she had defeated--nothing more, nothing less.

Elena made another pass just in time to catch the Aurora off-guard, but she didn't connect.
Nicoletta had felt her machine shudder a bit, and knew her opponent refused to let her even consider lowering her guard.

As the Deus came round for another pass, Nicoletta was ready. Several burst punched through the air at the mobile suit.
"I don't know who you are, and that's really not something that's going to matter."
--------------------------------------

Zaskarov quietly studied the ever-changing status of the attackers.
One hand rested below his mouth as he thought over the situation.
"It's rather odd that the ships have moved backwards from their original positions." He commented.

"We're not even on the offensive just yet."

Pagan had been standing quietly in the room observing, but now he chose to speak.
"That does sound odd. If I may, would you let me look at the status directly?"
The commanding officer gestured at the table with his hand. "If it doesn't trouble you."
"Not at all." Pagan waved off any hint of it being an inconvenience.

The masked man quietly studied the situation for a moment, and then spoke.
"It's been a great while since I saw something very similar to this, and I've only heard about it a handful of times, but the only thing I can think of is that the ships are going far away to fire at some target from a distance."
"Are you sure?"
"One hundred percent? No, but it's that or a retreat."

The general reached for a phone.
"It's good the Augustine here."
As he waited, a confident grin formed on Pagan's face.
"Indeed." He said quietly. "Indeed it is."
-----------------------------------------

Veronika listened intently to what Zaskarov had to say.
"Captain, I need you to act immediately and launch the Augustine." Zaskarov ordered calmly. Even so, the pressing urgency was unmistakable. "We believe the enemy ships are positioning themselves to fire their main cannons at the base. We need to act quickly and engage them before they strike."
"As you wish, sir."
With that the line went silent and she sprung into action.
"Prepare for emergency launch!"
-----------------------------------------

"You really amuse me lasting this long!" Avent growled as the Freya blazed past the Nergal. "I can't understand what you have to live for."
Ryuji fired his mobile suit's beam rifles from the hip as he ready the beam buster.
"I have plenty!" He snapped. "You wouldn't understand because you hate everything."
The Freya started to come around for a pass.
Avent deftly wiped the incoming fire away with the shield
"That's where you're quite wrong, boy. I only hate garbage, whatever the form."
"So you hate me because I'm a Newtype?" Ryuji grimaced.
"I never liked you to begin with, but you were so compliant it wasn't worth pushing you."
Avent punctuated his point with a solid kick that Ryuji could not mistake.
The Freya pointed its beam pistol as the Nergal flew away.
"However, you're holding up pretty well, but then, I had a hand in your training. But, the student can't be superior to the master."

Ryuji punched the thrusters to full throttle, canceling his descent.
Shots darted past, narrowly missing by what seemed like hairs.
Avent's upper lip curled angrily.
"Maybe I trained him a little too well."
The Nergal came charging, beam saber drawn.
"I already told you I made a promise, and I intend to keep it!"
------------------------------------------

Smith's Scorpio followed a fleeing Zeus.
"Oh, no you don't."
The reticule locked, and he fired.

Wade carefully scanned the area.
"Looks like we're clear in this area."
"Sure does," Smith agreed with a swagger in his voice. "I think this system finally came back to me."
"Really?" Wade asked. "I didn't think the Centurion Guard used Scorpio's."
"They didn't, but I briefly shot things up with a prototype."
Wade almost spoke, but Alban interrupted.
"Did we ever find what was bumping off the perimeter mobile suits?"
"Not that I could tell, but with these Zeuses we've laid waste to, I don't know if we have anything to worry about."
"I guess, but..."

Alban's eye's searched as he slowly turned his Scorpio around.
"Then why do I get this sense of dread?"
"Oh, come on, this isn't the time for jokes." Smith groaned.
"But I'm serious!" Alban hissed. "There's something here, and it's giving me the creeps."
Suddenly, he leapt aside, as if to avoid something.

"How did he avoid me?" Sky wondered.
She glanced down at the panel to see her energy was still at a healthy level.

Wade was concerned about Alban's seemingly bizarre actions.
His mobile suit whipped around with it's beam rifle out as if to fire at something.
"Tell me what's going on?"
"I don't know, but something's out there."
Alban wasn't sure himself, but he was positive that there most certainly was something around.

By now, Smith had begun looking around for signs of an enemy.
Off in the distance, he saw the Nergal and Freya still in a heated battle and it hit him.
"Of course we're not seeing it!" He blurted out.
"Seeing what?" Wade asked.
"Now I remember." Smith told him, tensely on guard. "These guys have one mobile suit that can cloak itself. It's coming back to me; we've got some guys that are dangerous."
"Any ideas on how to get it to show?" Alban asked.
"Uh," Smith chuckled grimly. "I saw that one hack down a buddy of mine and disappear into thin air."
Alban was obviously shocked.
"You've got to be kidding! An optical cloak on a mobile suit...they use a lot of power from what I heard."
"I don't know how they pulled it off, but that thing definitely exists."
--------------------------------------

"You're just a damn Scorpio!" Jin roared. "You shouldn't still be moving."
Gracefully, Jana's mobile suit sidestepped a beam saber slash.
"I think you'll find Federation pilots are well trained in combat and not on running their mouths."
The Scorpio followed with a smack of its shield.
"You know, you're machine's quite nice, but I don't know why a sloppy soldier like you got it."
She drove her machine shoulder-first into the back of the Nephthys.

Nicoletta briefly eyed her partner's ongoing battle, but returned to her own.
"He still doesn't learn."
She unleashed a number of short bursts from the Aurora's repeater at the Deus, storming toward her opponent.

"Alice, now!" Elena called.
From a relatively safe distance, Alice squeezed the trigger.
The Aurora swerved away, breaking off its approach.
At that moment, Elena pushed the Deus in for the kill, beam saber drawn.

"That just will not do." Nicoletta informed Elena, the Aurora brandishing its own burning blade to fend off the strike.
Using her momentum, she barreled into the Deus, making the winged machine's stance unstable.
Elena struggled to keep her mobile suit upright.
"Oh, how the hell am I gonna take this one down?" She muttered, her head whipping side to side.

Just as Nicoletta saw her opening, a flash of light in the air caused her to stop.
"So, it's that time?" She called over to Jin. "We're falling back, now."
An angry grimace was upon his face as the two machines retreated.
"I almost had her."
"Same here, but we're called back."
--------------------------------------

The Freya darted by, pelting the Nergal with a punishing blast of its beam cannon.
"The only thing I fail to understand is why you insist on continuing to live."
It transformed back to its mobile suit form, striking with its hammer.
Lights in the sky turned him from his attack and he stopped himself.
"Well, I guess this is good bye, Ryuji." He said ominously before his mobile suit turned and dashed away.
--------------------------------------

"Ma'am, the enemy mobile suits are falling back." reported Martin.
"And we're still within the firing range of the enemy ships?" Veronika asked.
"Yes, ma'am."
It seemed Pagan's warning was well heeded.
"Please, relay that to General Zaskarov and prepare the Schism for firing."
"Aye ma'am."
Before he could act, she added one last bit.
"Also, have all mobile suits pull away from the area immediately to avoid any potential blast on our end."
--------------------------------------

Otto saw the mighty Saratov base as it stood the apparent victor.
He knew that his mobile suits had all returned without significant damage. All that he was waiting on for this mission's trump card was for the accompanying ships mobile suits to return, at least whatever ones were left.

Avent stepped onto the hangar floor with a devilish grin.
"It looks like your lease on life is over, Ryuji."
Jin perked up and gave his superior his full attention.
"Huh, who did you say, sir?"
"Ryuji, I'm sure you remember him." Avent replied.
"Yeah, what about him?"
"I met up with him in battle today." The lieutenant baited.
The younger exploded in surprise.
"He's alive! No way!"
Avent's teeth were on full display.
"Well, not for much longer."
---------------------------------------

Ryuji cleared the base to the east and could see the Augustine rising.
He was unclear at what had been happening, but he was at the very least uneasy about the unfolding events.
As the Nergal continued along, some thoughts of Elena drifted through his conscience.
Though uncertain of the immediate future, he wondered about her and looked for the Deus signal.
After a moment, his search took a back seat as an increasingly intense light glowed behind him.
--------------------------------------

"Evade!" Otto bellowed, nipping at any commotion among the crew.
Everyone onboard the Rhine felt the massive ship accelerate away from the light tearing toward the line of ships.

Despite the chaos, he clearly understood two ships had been destroyed.
Something had gone terribly wrong in the last moments of the operation, and he ordered the remaining ships to make a hasty and definite retreat.
-------------------------------------

Elena gave a sigh after pulling the water bottle from her mouth.
She lifted it above her letting some of the cool liquid splash on her head, running down her heck and face.
A slight turbulence caused her to turn her head away momentarily, but when she looked, she saw the Nergal had come back.

As Ryuji descended on the zip line, he saw Elena below, hands on her hips, grinning,
"I don't know what just happened," he told her, looking around with a perplexed expression, "but I guess we won."
"You are glad to see me, right?" She implored.
"Well, yeah." He said, dropping down to sit. "But I'm also glad to be alive."
She sat down beside him.
"That bad?"
"Understatement of the year; I just went up against my old lieutenant, and he's good. I think he just about had me before they backed off."
"Really?" She asked, but she was uninterested in the battle as much as him.
"I was just so surprised he didn't cream me right away, you know. I really just can't believe that part, or--"
Elena cut him off.
"Now, are you going to talk about fighting or do something else?" She asked, coyly.
He blinked.
"Err, like what?"
"We're this close." She displayed one hand, with its index and middle fingers intertwined. "If you made a promise, then you should, uh," she stopped short of saying, but it was alright. Ryuji 's mind caught up and leaned over.
"Sorry, I'm a little slow." He told her, looking into her eyes.

After a moment, their mouths separated enough to allow for speaking.
"You know something, Elena?" He asked.
"About our promise, and doing that after the war, but after this fight, I don't know." he started slowly.
"Uh huh."
"Maybe this is really jumping the gun here, but, uh, maybe we shouldn't wait."

He waited while she digested the thought, but finally gave an answer, a cocktail of joy in her expression.
"Yeah, I can go with that."
--------------------------------------

There was a knock at Veronika's door.
"Come in." She said.

Ryuji and Elena shuffled in. By the way they moved, she knew there was a great deal of excitement.
"You two are awfully giddy." Veronika commented with an unassuming manner.
"I know we're the new kids in town," Ryuji began, "but, Elena and I have really been talking about this for a long time, and..." He stopped himself to appear sober-minded enough to say it.
"And with the situation in the world, we'd rather not put off doing this anymore."
"Which is?"
"Well, we want to get married."

Re: Mobile Suit Gundam Deus (New Phase 8/8/09)

PHASE 34 - PROMISE
-----------------------------

Alice's eyes nearly popped out of their sockets as she looked at the balance slip.
"How do you have that much money set aside?"
"What can I say? I wasn't in a position to spend it, so some of it sat in a high-intrest account and now I can reap the benefits." Elena casually explained. "I never thought I'd have to hijack my own account to get it."
"Ah, the wonderful guard leaves the fair maidens with some useful skills."
They both laughed.
"Okay, ladies--time to go." Jana shooed them along.

The jeep doors slammed shut on the idle vehicle.
Jana cocked her head back.
"So you got your shopping list?"
"You mean this?" Elena pulled up a few sheets of paper stapled together from inside the small backpack. "Yeah, I got it and the stores to hit."
The jeep began to roll.
"Well, you're certainly organized." Jana commented.
"Hey, I gotta make it count. I need do something in a couple of days that most people get a few months to set up."
------------------------------
Earlier
------------------------------

Veronika nodded at what Ryuji had just said.
"This is certainly a major decision for you two." She gave a slight grin. "It's a little surprising, but then, I don't know you as well as I'd like, so pardon some questions I have."
"Yeah, go ahead." Elena was slightly dazed as the impending reality had started to sink in.
"Very well." Veronika sat up and leaned onto her desk with her elbows. "How long have you discussed this?"
"I think about three or four months." Ryuji said. "At least with any serious intentions. I think the idea popped up along the way when we were kept up in that mansion."
"Actually, it kinda did." Elena clarified. "I don't suppose it's too often you end up imprisoned with someone who you just fought against and then fall for."
Veronica agreed.
"Yes, it did strike me as odd given the circumstances."
"I don't think it was on the table at first." Elena said. "I mean, at first just living in such a nice place instead of a rat hole had to sink in, and then, my inmate ends up being part of the group that killed a lot of people we'd lived with for quite awhile."
"That was unexpected, but with our captors controlling the media coming in, we both got disgusted with it and just talked...a lot." Ryuji expanded. "I know we're different in a lot of respects, but we're all human and personally, we didn't have a vendetta or the like. Just some unfortunate situations left us with the same outlook on what we'd do once we got out."
"So," Elena followed, "we really had only two routes to go: either hate each other or stick together."

"Well, that answers the love factor I wanted to ask, though I am curious as to how you two decided

to take the, ah, plunge now."
Ryuji and Elena took a moment to look each other in the eyes before delivering their response.
He replied solemnly.
"War hasn't stopped has it? We don't know how much longer it will continue, and instead of waiting until it ends..."
"You'd rather not run the risk of dying without this step?"
He nodded ever so slightly.
"I know this might sound jaded, but I've lost everything else I had. Maybe this will turn out for the best, even if it's just a short while."

Elena crossed off an item on her list as the three of them sat at a restaurant.
"That was a bit easier than I thought it was gonna be."
"I think it's the biggest part and you got something that fit so well," Alice sipped her drink, "although I still have a hard time seeing you in any dress."
After zipping up the backpack, Elena shrugged it off.
"Just some good luck for me, then."
"No doubt; at least you don't have to send out a zillion invitations."
"This is true, but I'm sure my dad might want to have some party when he finds out."
Jana leaned forward.
"You mean after his head stops spinning?"
"Oh, I'm pretty sure he'll be happy--after all, he did offer to set me up last time I was home. Its all the circumstances leading up to this that would make his head spin. I mean, what do I say?" Her voice fell to a hushed tone. "'Hi dad, I'm a mercenary and got imprisoned and fell in love with a guy that I fought against with a mobile suit'?"
"You have a point there." Alice agreed. "Probably make him have a heart attack."

Saratov Base
---------------------------------

The Union dress uniform hung on the wall, covered with plastic.
Ryuji knew it was there, but was currently focused on the boots he was cleaning.
It had been a good while since he'd done this. There was a sense of nostalgia and his mind wandered back to his training and the twisting rollercoaster of events that led him to the present.

He held the boot he was working on out for better light. He moved it around slowly and carefully, just like he learned. The shine was perfect and there wasn't a speck of dirt on them anywhere.

A pair of footsteps came in as he set the perfect boot down.
"Someone's going to be a pretty sharp looking fellow."
Ryuji lifted his head to see Wade leaning on the doorway.
"It's about the best I can do at this point." He explained.
"Does it fit?"
"I had to make a few minor alterations, but, yes it fits."
He picked up the other boot and examined it.
"It's a bit odd that a Federation base would have such an extensive selection of Union attire."
"Normally, yes, but being closer to the Union offers some excellent opportunities for covert and undercover operations."

Ryuji didn't reply, but began working on the second boot.
Wade watched for a while, eventually rocking forward to stand straight.
"So are you having second thoughts?"
The brush slowed and then stopped.
"I made a promise, and I keep those promises."
The brushing resumed.
"There's not a whole lot I've been able to take with me. I've been disowned by the nation I grew up in and fought for. I never knew my mother. The people I called allies just tried to kill me and label me a traitor because of something I can't control. There's not even a single Yen in my hand because I don't exist." His voice had ratcheted up. "There's no ring for her! She has to buy everything with her money! I can't offer her anything!"

Wade said nothing at first, letting the air clear in case Ryuji might say more.
"You know, there's a lot to be said for a man's honor."
Ryuji again lifted his head from his work.
"Money is a great thing, but some people's greed for it is just as great. Not everything out there has to revolve around possessions. Out in battle, you need your team to have your back, and I mean actually do it, not just say they will. If your teammates don't follow through with they're promise to work alongside you, you're all dead."
Wade rocked back and forth on his heels.
"If a man can't keep his word, he could have all the money in the world and be a worthless fool.

There's a true loyalty that can't be purchased; that's what is important. As long as you do that, that's what counts."

In their respective positions, the two stayed without a word. The only sounds came from the brush Ryuji used on the boot.
At last, he set it down and looked up with determination and resolve.
"Then I have everything I need."
"Very good."
"Thank you."

In the Augustine's hangar, Smith and Alban unrolled a wide, thick paper along the floor.
"Why do I keep thinking some stained glass windows need to be hung up?" Smith cracked.
Alban looked over across the thick white roll of paper, perplexed.
"What? Windows? Why?"
Smith grimaced.
"Please tell me this isn't the first wedding you've been to."
"No, but--Oh! A church, yeah, okay."
"If this is a church, then I'm a priest." Smith bent his head back to look at the Nergal and Deus.

"Which makes them the deities or something like that."
As they laid down the roll, Alban commented.
"Funny you say that because those machines do have something to do with the myths."
Smith just shrugged.
"I can't say I really studied mythology, so these codenames don't mean much outside themselves."
"Okay, I'll keep this short so I don't bore you, but Nergal is the Mesopotamian god of war."
"Never heard if it."
"Well, most people seem to hear of Roman and Greek mythology, but not so much the others. I think it's great, but that's mean. As far as I can tell, the Deus just comes from the Greek 'deus ex machina' or 'god from the machine'. I guess they couldn't come up with something else they wanted."
"Hey, if it fits..."

Julia slammed the limousine door shut.
"You certainly get around." She commented.
"I just like to keep myself...involved." Pagan replied.
Her eyes shifted across to glance at him.
"That I can see." She crossed her legs. "I think whoever has been responsible for the repeated sabotage attempts has to be involved with the military, which I've suspected for some time. But, I think there's some clues that have started to pop up about some sort of resistance."
"Oh, really?" Pagan said his attention clearly heightened.
"Whoever they are, this outfit is quite good at covering their tracks, so I still have very little to go on. However, the buzz I've seen has been much more frequent."
"So, you believe they might be close to making their move?"
"I think we should operate as if they are."
"Any idea on their target?"
"It's something to do with the program; I'm sure of it. It has to be what they've been targeting all along."
Her eyes narrowed. "But, this time, I won't let them make a fool of me."
Pagan grinned softly.
"I know you won't disappoint."

As the dusk slowly changed into night, Ryuji stood on the deck of the Augustine.

"You know, there's a lot to be said for a man's honor."

Wade's thought had played through his mind at least a dozen times since their little talk. But, questions about the future swam through his head, ones he was unsure of what answers he should have.

"So, there's where you've been hiding."
Elena had discovered where he'd gone off too.
"Oh, hi." He greeted. "You found me."
"Yeah---after I searched the usual places I thought you'd be."
"Sorry about that."

They stood beside each other, shoulder-to-shoulder, looking at the stars.
"You know," he said. "I don't know what I'm doing."
She leaned on the railing.
"Neither do I...it's the blind leading the blind."
He glanced at her, and then back at the stars.
"I think about the future, and what it means for us. Are we going to continue on fighting? Do we have the right to put ourselves at risk once we're married?"
"You're full of heavy questions." She commented and then implored earnestly, "You're not thinking of bailing on me, Ryuji?"

He turned to face her.
"No. I made a promise to you. It's all I have to give. I wish I could do more."
One nervous hand moved out reaching out around her waist.
"I'm not backing out, but it would be untrue if I didn't say my mind has been on overdrive."
"You too, huh?" She confessed. "Truth be told, I'm really scared as hell. I'm lucky to have a few people I know on board, but there are some things that they can't really understand."
"Being a Newtype?"
"That's part of it. You know me pretty well, so I worry about the most important man in my life disappearing."

Then, they stood in place, watching the sky darken.
Finally, Ryuji had to chuckle.
"Aren't we just a sad couple?"
"I suppose it could be worse. At least we were able to talk."
"So are you still scared?"
She rubbed his arm.
"Yeah. Just like the first time I sat in a Zeus."
"You told me this before, but I forget the details."
"I'll have to tell you again sometime." She stretched, standing on her toes and extending her unoccupied hand. "But, we're going to have an eventful day tomorrow, and I need my beauty sleep."
"Let me say goodnight." He told her.

And then, he moved in for a kiss.
---------------------------------------------

Carefully, Ryuji pulled on the end of the sleeve of his shirt.
So this was it.
He turned from side to side in front of the mirror to ensure this uniform was spotless.
Perfect, just as it should be.

He left the room for the last time as a single person.
Wade stood outside, saying nothing.
There was no need, as Ryuji nodded indicating he was ready to make his way to the hangar.
---------------------------------------------

Elena rocked her face back and forth to examine it.
"Hey, how does this makeup look?"
Alice leaned over to view the work.
"Wow, that's a really good job!"
"Great." Elena smiled. "I haven't done this in forever, so I wasn't sure."
"Better ask now than when you're at the altar." Alice handed her the bright red flower.
Elena took it and began to work it into her hair.
"Yeah, that would be a disaster."

She pushed her seat back to stand and glanced at the clock.
"I guess I'm ready."
Alice cracked open the door, looking both ways.
"Okay, it's clear." She smiled. "You really know how to pick out a cute dress."
She walked toward Elena to hand her the bouquet.
"Ready?"
"As ready as I'll ever be."
----------------------------------------------

Ryuji stood, one hand atop the other and facing up the created aisle.
Even as Veronika moved up to her position, he didn't waver.
Here and now, whoever performed the ceremony was unimportant; Elena was.

She appeared at the hangar door. It was far away, but it gave him a chance to view her as a woman.
The white, strapless dress showed her beauty and an elegant side he was glad to experience.

As she approached, Elena saw a sharply dressed Ryuji. Her reserved man stood straight and silent.

Though his face didn't flinch, she sensed he welled with joy inside.
The feeling intensified when she stepped up beside him and he took her hand.

Veronika cleared her throat.
"Friends and guests, it is an honor for you to be with us as witness to the union of this man and this woman. This ceremony is important, but truly the beginning of something greater. While many of us have not known them long, they are valued and honored. In turn, they will do the same for each other. Listen now as they affirm vows to one another before this gathering."

She addressed Ryuji and Elena, indicating for them to join both hands.
"Ryuji," she began, "before this gathering do you pledge the following to Elena: to honor, to cherish, to hold, to support, to love in all things and all ways? To have her in sickness and health, for richer or poorer, youth and old age all the days of your life?"

His deep eyes locked and penetrated Elena's.
"Yes, I will."
Then, Veronika turned to address Elena.

"Elena, before this gathering do you pledge the following to Ryuji: to honor, to cherish, to hold, to support, to love in all things and all ways? To have him in sickness and health, for richer or poorer, youth and old age all the days of your life?"
"Yes, I will."

Veronika looked out to the small crowd.
"As you have just heard Ryuji and Elena commit themselves to each other in the presence of this gathering, let this union be blessed."
She smiled softly.
"By the power granted from the state, I hereby declare these two people husband and wife."
With a gentle nod, she finished.
"Then you may kiss the bride."

A hearty applause filled the hangar at the conclusion.

Avent watched the Lilith stomp its way toward the hangar exit from the observation deck.
"Don't you think you're a bit obsessive over this?" Otto questioned guardedly.
"No, I don't. For some reason, he managed to escape despite the fact there is paperwork confirming his execution. Furthermore, he is a Newtype, just like that girl we captured and interrogated. For whatever reason, a person convicted of treason and sentenced to death is miraculously alive within Federation territory!"

Otto was unconvinced at his lieutenant's case.
"It is a problem, but one person with such a low rank isn't a high priority for this ship."
Avent gave him a withering glare.
"I think it is quite a problem with a high priority. Ryuji Kai has had extensive use of an experimental mobile suit and interaction with at least four others. Even if you want to toss out the obvious Newtype problem, we still have someone who knows far too much to be left alone. If you doubt me, I think that would be a massive indiscretion, my dear captain."
"Are you threatening me, Lieutenant Marquis?"
"If that's what you wish to call it. I simply see it as reality." His tone softened slightly as he diverted the subject. "However, I'm not going to make any moves until I have some of my own reconnaissance conducted."
Otto said nothing, but kept a wary eye at the other.

Inside the Lilith, Sky waited for the order to move out.
"Corporal," Avent addressed her, "please proceed with the mission."
"Roger, Lieutenant. Sky Cavalier, Lilith, out."

Phase 35

PHASE 35 - UNRESOLVED AGGRESSION
-----------------------------------------

There was enough air from Sky's exhaling to ruffle her hair. The recon mission was extremely dull, nothing really to see, particularly when compared to how it was a few days earlier. She wasn't sure what Avent expected to see, so anything she would report could easily be disappointing.
She took a glance at the panel to see the energy levels for the Lilith. It was more than adequate to make it back to the Rhine without issue.

Her perimeter run was almost complete and all she'd seen was what she expected: the remnants of a war zone. Even through the darkness, she could make out the toppled Zeus and Scorpio mobile suits.
She had counted at least ten Zeuses and at least that many Scorpios.
What she had for a report would be very brief, but that's all she had besides the equally boring photos she'd taken.

She felt guilty on two fronts. First, she felt like she had gathered no useful information.
Avent's temperament made him someone to fear because he would follow through on any threat he made.

Secondly, if it was true, a former ally was now her enemy. At first, she believed Newtypes were horrible people, but not Ryuji. She still struggled with this concept that clashed with everything she'd been indoctrinated with since she could remember. She feared to reveal any doubts about what intentions were being made. After all, wouldn't this make her a traitor?
-------------------------------------------

The bed jostled ever so gently as Ryuji stood up carefully.
He was awake and ready to move, but Elena still slept, albeit lightly.
It was dark. Not completely dark, but just dark enough where he was careful about which clothing he picked up.

After he was ready, he moved to her side of the bed and stood there momentarily.
His hand stretched out to softly caress her head.
She rustled and eventually came out of her sleep.
"You're up." She said groggily.
"Yeah, I'm gonna stretch and then bring back some breakfast. If that's alright."
"Mmm..." She rolled over, although unmotivated to move further. "Uh, go ahead...just come back ASAP."
"Sure thing."

While he was still becoming familiar with the Augustine's layout, Ryuji knew the important locations as far as he was concerned: the hangar, living quarters and the mess hall. Surprisingly, he was up at a reasonable hour even though, at least for today, didn't mean much.
"You're up early." Smith punctuated the thought.
Ryuji shrugged.
"We need to eat sometime."
"Well, duh, but where's the missus?"
"Back in our room."
"Aw, breakfast in bed," Alice fawned.
Smith snorted. "Boy, she got you trained pretty fast."
"Not really. I just woke up on auto-pilot." Ryuji moved along toward the counter.
Alice made a big wind-up as if to belt Smith across the head.
"Some could use some more training!"
"Hey, hey!" He raised his arms to block. "Remember: I joke around."
"Remember you're damaging that poor kid!"
Her swing slowed down before his face and she playfully patted him on the cheek.
She winked and smiled. "You jumped, sucker."
Ryuji had to chuckle a bit at the antics and moved along to gather some food.

As he wheeled the small cart the kitchen lent him back to his quarters, Wade was coming down the hall.
"So how goes it?" He asked Ryuji.
"We got married and now, we're relaxing while we can."
"That's good. So how are you with all this?" Wade prodded.
"It's looking up. Elena and I talked again, and while we don't know where to go exactly, we'll make it. For now," he shrugged, "we'll definitely stick it out here. It's not the most romantic place for newlyweds, but--"
"But that's not important." Wade finished the thought.
"No, as long as we have each other. I know that sounds sappy, but when I thought about what's valuable to me, it's people."
Wade grinned.
"Well, at least you have your priorities straight."

The club was filled with an opaque fog of smoke that dissipated as it drifted down from the ceiling.
One of the patrons at the bar raised a hand to signal the barkeeper.
"What'll it be this time?" He asked.
"Oh, I think I'll finish off with a brandy." The man said peering over the top of his glasses.
"Early night, eh?" The barkeeper chuckled.
"Of course. There's plenty of work to do tomorrow, so I can't neglect a good night's rest."
The barkeeper turned to the selection of amber liquid within ornate bottles.
"Very well, which one do you like?"
"I'll take whichever the house recommends."

The glass delivered a dull thud on the table followed by temporary stream that warmed the patron from the aroma of the alcohol.
The patron took a sip, swirling it in his mouth before delivering a verdict.
"Nice to see this place doesn't try to pass off some watered down piss as a solid drink."
"I take it you like that brandy?"
"It is a superior liquor."
"Enjoy your drink sir. I'll be back to check on you in a minute."
"No bother." The patron said, reaching into his pocket. "This is my last, so I'll pay now."
The money passed from him to the barkeeper.
"Keep the change."
Beneath the money, the barkeeper felt something else.
"Thank you, sir. Have a nice night."

As the patron exited the bar, he directed himself towards the cars in the parking lot and eventually making his way to an unimpressive sedan.
It was after he sat down and started up that another man sat up in the back seat.
"So, how did it go?" He asked.
"I made the drop. If this is the guy, we'll find out very soon."
"That's good." The passenger commented as the car rumbled to life. "I really hope we can get the drop on this resistance."
"Heh, it would be nice for us all, especially the Major, if something good finally came out of all this work."

Avent gazed out into the small crowd of pilots before him.
"And so, to summarize, these two mobile suits," he indicated to images of the Deus and Nergal with his pointer, "are our primary targets. Remember this as you execute the strategy. You are all dismissed."

The room's occupants withdrew as Avent collected the items from his presentation.
"Suzaku." He called out, not bothering to look up.
"Sir!"
"Suzaku, come here." He looked toward his subordinate who was a step or two from the door. "I have something you might find personally interesting."
Jin slowly turned and briskly came to the front.
"What do you have to show me, sir?" He asked after a prompt salute.

"I've put in a considerable amount of research into this little attack. I left out some details that weren't pertinent to most of the people we have coming with us. However, some of these, as I said, are probably a little more personal to you."
There was a guarded look across Jin's face.
"How do you mean?"
Avent began pulling out several papers.
"Let me frame this so you have the big picture. You know Ryuji Kai is still alive and well, despite the execution orders and papers." He pushed some sheets forward. "These are copies of those papers, if you're interested."
He continued, reaching for another paper.
"Now, this is one of the pilots we captured from that battle with the Centurion Guard ship."
Jin studied the girl and her profile.
"She's cute, but it says she's a Newtype."
"And so is Ryuji. You know where they go don't you?"
Jin nodded. "To the processing camp."

A manufactured cough from Avent, hinted that this information was false.
"Well, supposed to go. But, that's funny because neither one has ever been seen there. In fact, they were missing for the better part of a year until they popped up in Saratov."
"You're saying they were together this whole time?" A flash of anger tinted Jin's question.
"It certainly looks that way."
"Trash."
"Something else. That Elena Faust's dossier you just looked at happened to be the pilot of that silver machine. I was a little tied up with Ryuji, but after looking into that machine you and

Lieutenant Giovanni danced with, the fighting style is awfully similar. I won't promise it's her, but I know you have a bit of a vendetta with that machine. I'm sure you'd appreciate a chance to settle the score with that pilot."

Jin stood stoically.
There was a controlled breathing technique in use, but it was very clear a rush of anger had begun to flood his system.
"She won't make a fool of me this time. I swear."

Elena rested her head on Ryuji's chest.
She'd woken before he had, but she had no intention of getting out of bed.
It's true they didn't do much except stay in their quarters for the past few days. While she had thought she might regret not going anywhere, she was actually happy. She was happy to just be stationary and away from the bustle that had been a major part of her life as a mobile suit pilot.

She listened to the rhythmic rise and fall of his chest. If it was time to sleep, it could have been her guide. Although they had been close by the time they were freed, this was beyond what they had before.

There was a distortion in his breathing and she raised her head.
Ryuji began to move and stretch.
She waited until he showed signs of being more mentally aware before saying anything.
"Good morning."
First came a garbled reply as he attempted to respond during the course of an impressively large yawn, but he was still able to reiterate.
"Morning."

"So, what's going to happen today?" She asked.
They both knew the options were limited, but it was in fun to inquire.
"Let's see." Ryuji thought aloud. "Pony rides, Ferris wheel, water slides...what sounds good?"
She rolled over on top of him so they were face to face. Her arms stretched forward.
"What do you think mister?" She purred.

Ryuji closed the door.
"Ready?" He asked turning to Elena.
"Sure. I am pretty hungry." She shielded her eyes. "But, it seems really bright."
"I know." Ryuji squinted his eyes. "We've kept the lights off, so the pupils of our eyes dilate to allow for the little light available for our use. I read that...somewhere."
"That does seem to be a recurring theme with you." She looked over at him.
"Yeah, I guess it does." He observed in agreement.

Aboard the Rhine, the mobile suit crews were finishing their final checks and were starting to pull away.
The glance Avent took at his watch confirmed the operation would start as scheduled. Everybody was in their place. Now, he would take his seat to lead.
"Ryuji Kai..." He hissed as he walked up to his machine.

The cockpit closed and he powered up the Freya.
His eyes closed as he began to focus. Only when he had collected himself did they reopen.
"Today, you will take your last breath."

General Zaskarov and Veronika sat across from a small screen.
"I'm glad we didn't suffer anything too terrible on our end." said the on-screen Graf. "I'm sure you can imagine what sort of loss the Augustine would be after all the care we've taken to acquire it for our purposes."
"Well, that's certainly a generous commendation, my friend." Zaskarov replied. "I think possibly a little too generous, but still a very valuable asset. But, at this point, I can assume the mission is still on schedule?"
"Correct. At this stage, the ship should move to the rendezvous point as previously discussed."
Veronika leaned forward, hand on her chin.
"How soon?"
"In three days, unless we feel the need to move it up."
"Then someone in the Federation is starting to notice something is up." She sighed.
"Unfortunately, if we're going to pull this off, we don't have the luxury of pushing it back like we did the last time we tried. However, the good news is that we have a much larger force."
Zaskarov crossed his arms.
"And how about the battle plan?"
"Which one you mean?"
"No, I'm clear on the overall strategy, but there are a few details that concern me."
"Alright then," Graf nodded. "Let's hear them now."
---------------------------------------

Martin stood on the Augustine's bridge. A few of the crew were present for some light work--nothing he couldn't handle. He was sure they would finish just fine, but he was on guard as his two immediate superiors were in a very important meeting.

"So," one spoke to him in between chomps at her gum, "you gonna sit in the chair?"
"Probably not right now..." he said, taking a few steps in her direction.
"And why not? You're the man right now, so take a load off."
"I could, but it feels better to stand. If I get tired after smacking you two around for slacking off," he said, "I might."
"Well, don't get your hopes up, because I'm done. Ta-da."
"And the results, Cara?"
"All systems check out, as I figured."
"You're lucky." The other crewmember sighed. "The new navigation system is just weird to work with. I mean, I see why they did it, but it's obnoxious to use and I wish I had a little more time with it."
"Better get used to it," Cara teased.
"She's right," Martin said, "because the Federation top brass is pretty happy with the system---"

He cut off as a tick came from the panel at the captain's chair.
"Better see what's up." He said to himself as he sat down.
He studied intently for a few minutes.
"Cara, the systems are all online, correct?"
"Yes, sir!" She replied firmly.
"Good. There are some Union mobile suits moving toward the base."
-------------------------------------------

Elena was just about to bite into a melon piece from her plate when the alarm went off.
"Okay, there wasn't a drill today?" She growled.
"No..." Ryuji said slowly, looking around as he started to decide what he should do.

Several people dashed past the door.
Calmly, he set his utensils down and stood.
"You gonna check it out?" Elena looked up at him.
"I suppose so."
He caught a glimpse of Smith as he dashed by.
"Hey!" He called out. "Hey, what's going on?"

Smith backtracked to oblige them.
"Hey, yourself."
"What's going on?" Elena asked.
"I guess the Union is still upset," Smith told them, then gave a smirk, "so it looks like we'll just have to go wipe the floor with them like last time."
"What force do they have?"
"Maybe fifteen mobile suits at most, so if you want to skip out, I'm sure that'll be alright. You are on your, uh, honeymoon...as best you can make it here."
He sprinted away.
"We'll take care of this one."

Ryuji looked at Elena. He shrugged, knowing he wasn't fully committed to the idea.
"Well, he's right."
"Yeah, but I just have this feeling that something's wrong. C'mon, Ryuji, just a small number of mobile suits? Total suicide or they've got something really big."
She stood up.
"I guess this means the honeymoon is over." He said. "Back to work, huh?"
"More like suspended," she drew a determined grin, "for the moment."
----------------------------------------------

Elena was a few strides ahead of Ryuji as they dashed into the hangar.
"Quick, get my machine ready to launch!" She yelled toward some nearby mechanics. "I gotta suit up."
"Get mine ready too, please." Ryuji told them before they could even start to move.

The Deus cockpit hummed as Elena slid into the seat. She started to power it on before she'd thought to sit down.
"Are you sure about this?" Wade asked over the comm.
"We are part of the crew, so we might as well."
"Alright then, see you two when you catch up."
"Roger." Elena and Ryuji said.

The path was clear for launch as she was given the okay.
"Elena Kai, Deus, Go!"
------------------------------------------------

"They're coming." Nicoletta warned.
A handful of Scorpio's were in sight of the Union attack force.
"But, not the ones we came for." Avent sighed. "All the same, let's take care of them while we

wait!"
The Freya screamed forward and started to fire its beam cannon.

"Spread out!" Wade ordered. "Now, I'm glad those two are coming with this crap." He muttered.

Avent grinned as the Scorpios rapidly fanned out.
"This is going to be fun."
---------------------------------------------------

In the distance, Ryuji could see the flashes of battle that had already started.
Out of curiosity, he zoomed in with one of the Nergal’s cameras.
"You again."
He could clearly make out the Freya and his heart sank.

His mobile suit was close enough that Avent picked it up.
"Well, Ryuji you're just who I wanted to see. I have some business with you I'd like to finish once and for all!"

Re: Mobile Suit Gundam Deus (New Phase 11/17/09)

I'm only on Phase 5 right now, but I must say that this is really good. Elena is a very unique character and the conflict is very plausible.

I don't know whether or not you are aware of these things, but here are some things that I thought could have been better:
Hisham Tariq, another mobile suit sat with his arms crossed, nodding to acknowledge her.
I am assuming you meant "mobile suit pilot." Things like this really brought me back to the reality of fanfiction. Without these things, I would easily be immersed in the story.
Elena was shaking, breathing hard. This battle was different from anything she had experienced before. It was mentally and emotionally draining. The Newtype classification didn't bother her really. She felt so violated by Joshua, yet she was sure he hadn't done anything sexual. It was more than that. It was a violation of her mind. How had it become an open door to someone else?
I thought this was a poor choice of words. To be violated does not inherently imply that it was in a sexual nature. The introduction of that idea really made me stop and pause for a second. Also, I felt that the introduction of Newtypes should of had a more meaningful and gradual introduction that made more sense than smacking the reader in the face with it.

Re: Mobile Suit Gundam Deus (New Phase 11/17/09)

Thanks.

Spell check only goes so far, and I guess my proof-reader didn't catch that. I'll have to go back and fix that thing.

As for the Newtype thing, the concept is harder to grasp, but it was probably a poor choice in that particular description.
Spoiler
On the other hand, she's also been unconscious and hit over the head with the Newtype revelation, plus been held up for a little bit by a mysterious enemy who employed at least one lecherous fellow. I think my point was more to introduce a rush of emotion and confusion.
I've picked up that Tomino was a bit on the vague side of things when it came to the specific definition of a Newtype, so it's been difficult to work with.
