Re: Spontaneous Art Contest!! >=o O,O

I've got an idea, but i'm not sure i can pull it off in time, as i'm slow and easily distracted by shiny.............

I'm sorry, what was i talking about again?

anyways, gonna start sketching it out now. I've only gotten the concept worked out, i'm not even really sure on the basic design, so I've got a long month ahead of me.

Oh and as for the collab reward, i'd be willing to volunteer my own shoddy skills for it.

Well... heres what I've done so far for the contest. I'm not sure whether to continue with this one though seeing as the Ahead is not really supposed to be a grunt MS.Fatty Aheads are out of my comfort zone. Rough draft is rough :/

Guess I met my deadline....

ESDF-07AMS2 Aries II "Sky Scorcher"

size comparison

Role: Aerial Weapons Platform Support Mobile Suit
Features: Enhanced communications antenna, flight/hover mode
Fixed Armaments: 80mm chest vulcan x2, planet defenser x8
Options: 200mm Anti-armor Gatling Cannon "Falsetto", GR-240, missile pod, scatter bomb, grenade, Chain rifle
Designers: ESUN R&D
Description:

Outperformed by the Taurus and eclipsed in number by Leos wearing flight packs, the OZ-07AMS Aries soon fell out of favor. In response to new conflicts the Earth Sphere Defense Force repurposed the Aries as a flight capable heavy weapons platform that could support ground units from low altitude. Critics doubted the use of such an expensive and high performance unit, but the A2 soon proved its worth and won favor among ESDF ground troops the world over.

The A2 "Sky Scorcher" uses a similar fuselage to the original Aries but carries a much larger onboard reactor to power all of its functions. To support the large reactor, the size of the mobile suit had to be increased, and the A2 stands much taller than the original, and has a head height close to that of the Tallgeese. The onboard reactor provides power to the A2's large weapons and heat to its thermonuclear jets. All 8 of the A2's jets are increased in size and thrust power, and the MS can maintain flight indefinitely so long as the reactor is functioning. The large thrust power allows the A2 to carry large weapons and heavy payloads and use all of them with high stability. The A2 is much faster than the original Aries, but has low acceleration when fully loaded due to high weight.

The A2's weapons are designed to attack armored ground units and fortifications. It can provide a strong offensive against troops and mobile armors but often requires air support due to low mobility against airborne units. A communications antenna increases the A2's contact range and facilitates communication with allied ground units who can call for the A2 to provide support and take out targets.

Special notes:

200mm Anti-Armor Gatling Cannon "Falsetto": The Falsetto is a weapon specifically designed along with the A2. It has an electric rotary motor powered through the mobile suit's hand plug, and has a variable rate of fire ranging from 2100 to 7000 rounds per minute. It is loaded with a mix of High Incendiary Piercing rounds and High Incendiary Explosive rounds that obliterate ground troops and armored units. The strafing runs performed with this weapon are absolutely devastating. The ammo drum the A2 carries has a 2100 round capacity and can be mounted to either side of the gun so the weapon is ambidextrous.

GR-240: The GR-240 is an automatic grenade launcher hand carried by the A2. It is fed by a belt and box mounted on the wing behind the wielding arm. Each grenade has a blast radius large enough to take out a number of grounded mobile suits. With a fire rate of 240 rounds per minute, the GR-240 is the stuff of nightmares for enemy units. The gun is ambidextrous and can be fired with either hand.

Planet defensers: Because of its heavy weapons and low mobility, the A2 is outfitted with a set of 8 planet defensers to protect it from returning fire while it attacks from fixed hovering positions. The defensers can protect the A2 from ground troops below and also from anti-air units, but the shield can be overwhelmed if the pilot is not cautious. Even with this defense, A2 pilots often prefer to work in teams or to have airborne escorts.

Obviously my entry was inspired by the A-10 Thunderbolt II. Here is some propaganda:

Certainly looks impressive. I assume it's made of Gundanium, that is if it likes its arm and wants to keep it when it fires the Falsetto. But then, if it uses Gundanium then the Falsetto probably weighs as much as it does, and I'm sure that makes strafing runs... amusing. :P

If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing.

Re: Spontaneous Art Contest!! >=o O,O

Yeah, I completely forgot to include construction materials. Supposedly, the fuselage is neo-titanium, but some of the rarer units are Gundanium. I'm thinking they'd need internal skeletons made of Gundanium to support the high recoil though. For all the units the cockpit block is made of reinforced Gundanium to increase pilot survivability. I prefer for my pilots to live, lol.

Recoil was a huge issue with this design. The GAU-8 on the A-10 Thunderbolt II has to be mounted a certain way so the recoil doesn't cause the plane to veer off course. And even then, the gun's recoil causes the plane to slow down as it flies because it pushes back so hard. The Falsetto fires slightly faster than the GAU-8 and has a cartridge that's almost 7 times larger. The recoil is going to suck, to say the least.... A prolonged burst may send the A2 spinning around like a helicopter, hehehe. :P If it helps at all, the back of the Falsetto has a small swing arm that attaches to the wing's hardpoint.

Okay, to motivate some more entries and to help you decide on what request you may want to make, here are the prize artists so far: me, Crash, jjarodurandal, and Shori. Crash and I have similar skill sets, though all around he's much better than me. We sketch lineart by pencil and color in Shop. (I can also capture gameplay footage for consoles, but I'm not sure that kind of request would be relevant.) His style of mechs are more streamlined and original while mine tend to be more traditional Gundam. (I'm likely the most unoriginal artist on the board, lol.) He and I can both do character work. Crash is more versatile in this area while I seem to mostly have practice drawing women.

I don't quite recall Mr. Durandal's work, but I'm sure he'll produce something lovely if he's not distracted by something invariably shiny. Shori agreed to participate, offering to franken or make a sketch. Could be interesting, as I've never seen his pencil work before for some reason. (Yes, that means NO 3D modeling!)
Again, the prize winner should make a request while we each make an interpretation of it. I'm hoping the results are interesting. For my sake, please request something awesome.

=o

Technically I'm better at sketching male characters quickly then female and any mecha with a standard gundam-like torso (i.e. the torso protrudes forward) or has notably inhuman proportions (i.e. squat torsos) drastically slows down my sketching speed. provided I can keep on task I can produce general sketches in as little as 2 and a half minutes.

and Sera about your P.S. I use to have the same problem with the text box. made it hard to actually read what I typed at the time. while I now use firefox I believe I had the problem corrected before them. I just don't remember how.

on a side note I'm thinking about just hacking the lower legs off my entry. I'm getting into all kinds of problems now from poor planing. can't believe so many people got their stuff completed before I'm even done with my lines. need to get off my arse.

I'm not at all surprised to see Sera's entry wielding a gatling cannon as he just loves those to death. 200mm? wow the A-10 does some nightmarish stuff with a 30mm so that 200mm is fearsome indeed. And yet I see no duel gatling commander variant?

Bigger is always (usually anyway) better.

You can add my name to the list as well. While most of my stuff here is just standard mecha profiles I've recently been expanding into more dynamic shots and I can do characters as well.

More than you may think. If the Falsetto round is proportioned like the GAU-8 round, then its size is proportional to the cube of the increase in diameter (a 2-meter cube is 8 times as large as a 1-meter cube). (200/30)^3=296. I don't know if even a Gundanium arm could handle the recoil of 300 GAU-8s, and let's keep in mind that a combat-loaded Warthog weighs x2.5 Wing Zeros.

But overkill is more fun anyway.

Hell yeah I love gatling cannons! A select few of you have had the honor of tasting my dual gatlings before. Hoping to add Shori to that list soon. :P

To be honest, I was going to do art of the A2 in its flight mode, defensers deployed, dual gatlings, firing missiles, but I got tired, and I wouldn't finish it in time for my deadline. Maybe later, when I have the time and energy for it. The Falsetto and GR-240 are noted to be ambidextrous in the profile because I was implying either gun can be dual wielded by any pilot that chooses to deploy with that load-out. No need to be a commander. =p
Areku wrote:More than you may think.
Yeah, I know about the "square-cubed law" and all that. (Physicist, remember? :P) I was more focused on badassery than plausibility with this design, however. I hope that doesn't bother you too much. =)

In fact, lately I've been playing with the idea of an electromagnetic "bracer" for high recoil guns based on planet defenser technology. Could be an idea worth following through, but I'll talk about it if I eventually start my tech thread on defensers and the experiment I ran. =o

(Ah, and we're glad to have you aboard, Solid!)

Okay, everyone stop distracting me now. I've been meaning to catch up on some reading! >,<

But I'm not even talking about square-cube. Rather, I'm pointing out that your ratio of recoil/platform-mass is about x750 that of the GAU-8/Warthog. Therefore, our dear friend Newton says the Falsetto doubles as exotic propulsion.

And yeah, I'm also really worried about the A2 itself being really light.... Hm.... How the hell do we even deal with that?? Ugh, I'll think of it later.

Funny thing though, Crash made a joke about someone mounting the GAU-8 to the bed of his pickup truck and using the recoil as propulsion.

Well, yeah, considering this:
Wiki wrote:The recoil force of the GAU-8/A[14] is 10,000 pounds-force (45 kN),[3] which is slightly more than the output of one of the A-10's TF-34 two engines (9,065 lbf / 40.3 kN each).

Lol, I'm more good at drawing people than mecha; females slightly better than males, though I dabble a little in both. I have drawn mecha before and when I put my mind to it they can come out pretty good, but it's a 50/50 chance so I can't guarantee it.

As for Frankening... well, I have Lazy Bastard Syndrome when it comes to Frankening, so if you do make a frankening request of me, well, hopefully I can fulfill it~

I spend almost 1.5 hrs just lounging in bed in the morning and in addition 2 more hours sitting at my desk, doodling on scrap paper. During this president's day holiday, i sat around lounging away the whole day every day except for walks around the apartment. all in all about 3-12 hours of sheer wasted time over all per day on any given date. Beat that!
