I'd suggest a Sun Crusher as an alternative - same destructive power, in a package about the size of an X-Wing.

The Sun Crusher has limited ammo, the Death Star apparently doesn't-it generates its own power. Plus, all the turrets, soldiers and TIE Fighters that come with it (not counting an escort fleet) is an awesome bonus. And it looks awesome-and is big enough for you to hide...oh... whatever you want to hide...
