Re: Gundam: What's Official?

To me, the authority to decide what is or isn't canon rightfully belongs to the individual or group who currently owns the IP, regardless of the original creator/author or any individual writer/director. So there's no canon for things that no one owns (e.g. Sherlock Holmes)? Because I would have th...

Re: The little Evangelion 3.33 thread

It's in 2.35:1 instead of 1.77:1 like the other two films. They best know why they changed aspect ratios, but Anno has done it before: the last episode of Gunbuster is in a different aspect ratio from the first five.

Five or six years ago a couple of friends and I watched through all of classic Who. Took the better part of year, but we all enjoyed it a lot.

Re: UC's Earth born elite- Just how elite are they?

The narrator of the Mobile Suit Gundam novel says this: "But on Earth more and more people began to rebel against the idea of emigration, and they petitioned the Earth Federation for permission to continue inhabiting the planet, to "preserve the native human stock," as they put it. As...

Re: Female Characters: Which Gundam series does the BEST job

I'm not really sure what relevance some of those remarks have, so perhaps I am not being clear. The Bechdel test is a common metric for determining female presence in a narrative. Gundam series, the television ones at any rate, typically have no problem passing the first criterion (at least two wome...

Re: Female Characters: Which Gundam series does the BEST job

Does any Gundam series pass the Bechdel test? Because I would have thought if your female characters are solely defined by their relationships with the men, then you aren't handling them very well. (For instance, how much of what Noin does is dominated by her relationship with Zechs?) (Failing the t...

Re: What makes combat choreography "good"?

Quite a lot of your post seems to have nothing to do with choreography. The choreography is just the motions the combatants perform. The term, after all, comes from dance and literally means "dance writing." Whether or not anything is accomplished, for instance, has nothing to do with the ...

The Amestris military under Fuhrer Roy Mustang? Seriously, there's a fan comic somewhere where Meyrin asks about the skirt, Luna says it's no big deal and she wears what feels good, and Mustang appears out of nowhere to praise her as an ideal soldier (before Hawkeye drags him off by the collar). Sa...

You're forgetting something about MacBeth, though. ... I won't deny the appeal of seeing horrible things happen to horrible people. Padre: It's possible to admire someone, or a facet of them, something that could have been polished into something great, without generally liking them. Might even hate them. But no one's ever said you can't respect an enemy. I'd also stop from using comparisons of Shakespeare to Gundam. You're giv...

To me a tragedy is most effective when bad things happen to good people. If you like a character than seeing them killed evokes that much more powerful of an emotion in you. ... Re: Zeta Gundam: Why is it so great?

None of the characters were particularly likable save a few and spent most of the series bickering with each other. There's been a whole thread of discussion following this remark. It's somewhat curious. Zeta's cast is one of the reasons it is "so great," not one of the reasons it's not. ...

Re: Operation Stardust

Personally, I think a group which plans to kill anyone who doesn't toe the party line is infinitely worse than one which simply doesn't care about those same people's situations. You can always work to change someone's social situation, unless they're dead. Were the Titans guilty of pretty much the...

it's basically implied (If not stated outright) that the former AEUG units rejoin the EFF, hence the Argama's situation. Where, exactly? As far as I can tell, we don't see the Federation do anything for the first 27 or so episodes of ZZ, whereupon we see the Federation government welcome Haman to D...

Re: 10 August 2010: Britannia invades Japan

The Britannian calender is dated from Caesar's invasion of Britain in 55 BC, not from the birth of Christ, so 2010 a.t.b is equivalent to AD 1955.
