Re: It will come: the US trailer to Turn-A Gundam arrives

I would really like to have a date. But I am glad at least that it is "Coming 2011" and not 2012.

Re: Fantasy in Space! (?)

I came across another series of books which fits into the "almost what you are looking for, but perhaps not quite" category: John C. Wrights Chaos trilogy (Orphans of Chaos, Fugitives of Chaos, Titans of Chaos). The sci-fantasy elements don't really come into the foreground until the third...

Re: Kampfer in Commercial?

What's great is that in the second commercial on the page linked to in the first post, the background music is suspiciously similar to (but probably not so similar as to enable a lawsuit) The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again."

So I imagine that this isn't an isolated incident.

Re: Autumn 2011 Anime

They're making a new Lupin III? That should be worth checking out. Though with all the adventures that Lupin III and his gang have had, I wonder if it would be worthwhile eventually checking out some other Lupin. It would be cool to see an adaptation of the original Arsene Lupin books, or maybe a Lu...

Re: Planescape Torment

If you want a digital copy, it's not rare anymore. You can pick it up on Good Old Games for $10 (like most of Black Isle's other games). I did greatly enjoy this game, but I do think that it suffers in that it is only really worth playing through twice for different experiences. Fighter and mage are...

Re: Why the backlash against fanservice in anime in general?

One of my big issues with fan service is that, much of the time, it's an indication that the team working on the show couldn't think of anything clever or interesting to do, and decided to make up for it with a panty shot or something. And saying that there's also the issue that many forms of fanser...

Re: SRW OG: Mugen no Frontier EXCEED

In addition to the above advice (which is all solid) I'll add two more tips: Firstly, it is important to time your attacks so as to chain together combos. The further the enemy is in the air the less likely it is that your attacks will miss or be blocked. Additionally later in the game letting the e...

Re: Australian made mecha game

There used to be a fair number of mech based western games in the day. Mechwarrior, Shattered Steel, and Earthsiege all come to mind. Mission Force Cyberstorm remains one of my favorite mech strategy games. I don't know what happened to cause a loss of interest in the genre. Maybe it was simply that...

Re: Fantasy in Space! (?)

It doesn't have space travel or anything, but Steven Brust's Dragaera books (probably any book you actually find in stores by him will be in this world) play the "magic as a technology" angle pretty well. Especially by the elf analogues, magic is not treated as anything mystical, but as a ...

Re: Jerid Messa's abilities?

In Zeta everybody tended to have newtype moments. Even Lila, who specifically calls herself an oldtype, gives advice that seems to be about using quasi-newtype abilities. I think this was to hint at that newtypes were the next step in human evolution so that everyone would eventually be a newtype, j...

Re: Gundam is not really full of shades of gray.

But as for the White Base crew, look at most of the other Federation people they do meet, who are generally portrayed worse than the Zeon forces shown. Though Zeon still tends to attack civilians for little to no reason more often. However most of the shades of gray are from the OVAs rather than MS...

Re: Reccoa Londe

Recall Scirocco's first meeting with Yazan. After a few brief words Yazan is convinced that Scirocco is his kind of guy. Since Yazan seems to hate regulations and sophistication, this is somewhat surprising because Scirocco has been presenting himself as a refined kind of guy who plays by the letter...

Re: Aura Battler Dunbine

What I like about Dunbine is how well it handles the theme of escalation. The opening skirmishes have pretty low stakes, and then somehow you get halfway through it and we're fighting for the future of the entire world. The impressive thing is that the transition actually worked. It's also one of th...

Re: What do you want to see in the next Gundam series?

You mean, half of an Island Three. I've always wondered why Gundam thought to include Island Three colonies but then chop them in half. Hey, I know. For the next Gundam show, I'd like them to include Island Three colonies with BOTH cylinders. Of course, they'd probably have them spinning the same w...

Re: What do you want to see in the next Gundam series?

There's a lot of things that I want, which I think are somewhat common around here and also extremely unlikely to occur (i.e. adult protagonist, less moe, a realistic military organization, low number of Gundams and other super units.) Right now, I'll settle for some more O'Neill Island 3 colonies. ...

Re: Finished Watching 08th MS Team

I think that Shiro would have been a better character if he had more than 11 episodes to develop. He's supposed to have this character arc of hating all Zeons to an unreasonable amount for what they did to the colonies, to falling in love with Aina and realizing that Zeons aren't all bad, to not wan...

Re: Gundam War (Card Game)

I think part of the problem with the game was that the rules were pretty incomprehensible. I'm a card game veteran, I had to deal with the byzantine Decipher Star Wars CCG, and it still took me a long time to figure out what a lot of the rules meant. It didn't help that a lot of the terms used seeme...

Re: Real Robot??

Apart from G Gundam, Gundam is Real Robot, except when it's not. Times such as the endings of both Zeta and Char's Counterattack. Yes, Newtypes communicating telepathically and falling in love with one another was annoying (to me at least), but the Robots were still Real most of the time. This kind...

Re: Cinema Necromancy

I'm going to have to disagree with this idea that they are literally running out of ideas for a few reasons: 1.) In other media, such as video games or books, I'm still seeing fresh and interesting material. Sure there's a lot of repetition there (for instance, how many space marine shooters will be...
